Terry Hodges

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Committal and burial services for Terry Hodges, who passed away April 7, 2001, in West Palm Beach, Fla., will be held Saturday, May 26, 2001, at 2 p.m. in the Schenevus Cemetery, with the Rev. Douglas Gray (retired) officiating.

Helen R. Miller

PORT JERVIS — Helen R. Miller, 78, of Port Jervis and formerly of Oneonta, died Monday, May 21, 2001, at Valley Hospital, Ridgewood, N.J.

She was born April 9, 1923, in Ashland, the daughter of Riley and Mary (Olds) Waterman.

She was married twice. Her first husband was Walter E. Fink. Her second husband was Guy E. Miller. Both are deceased.

Helen was a nurse at the Robynwood Adult Home, Oneonta, and did private duty nursing in area homes at one time.

She was a resident of Oneonta for 30-plus years before moving to the Long Island area and later to Port Jervis where she has been a resident for the past 14 years.

Helen was a past member of the Oneonta Moose and Oneonta Eagles Clubs.

She enjoyed gardening and dancing.

She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard of Middletown and Guy and Janet of Port Jervis; one daughter and son-in-law, Donna Lee and Roger Thompson of Shirley, Long Island; five grandchildren, Valance and Michael Miller, Wade Thompson and Christina Hagner and Elisa Miller; and one great-grandson, Tyler Thompson. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Lillian Anderson.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2001, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Melvin Farmer of the River Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, officiating. Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2001, when the family will be present at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Dorothy Dutcher

UNADILLA — Dorothy H. Dutcher, 87, of Unadilla, died Monday, May 21, 2001, at JFK Medical Center, Edison, N.J.

She was born May 21, 1914, in DeBruce, the daughter of John and Hazel (Sprague) Henry.

She was a graduate of the State University College of Technology at Delhi, Class of 1932, and for a short time was a rural school teacher.

Dorothy was married to Fred D. Dutcher on June 23, 1935, in DeBruce. Mr. Dutcher died July 28, 1992.

She has been a resident of Unadilla since 1972, and had previously resided in Clifton, N.J.

She was a member of the Unadilla Baptist Church, the Unadilla Grange, the Unadilla Senior Citizens and the Happy Times Senior Citizens of Wells Bridge.

Dorothy is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Bonna and Joseph Massaro of Mays Landing, N.J., and Kathryn DenBleyker of Edison, N.J.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 26, 2001, at the Unadilla Baptist Church, with the Rev. Brian R. Cutting, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Henry Cemetery, DeBruce.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla, on Friday, May 25, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Freda K. Miller

ROCHESTER — Freda K. Miller, 95, of Rochester and formerly of West Oneonta, died Dec. 23, 2000. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at the Cook Cemetery, West Oneonta, with the Rev. John Dougherty, pastor of the West Oneonta Baptist Church, West Oneonta, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes of Oneonta and Otego.

Marion R. Reynolds

WORCESTER — The graveside committal service for Marion R. Reynolds, 91, who died March 5, 2001, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 26, 2001, at the Stamford Cemetery, with the Rev. Joyce Allen, pastor of the Worcester United Methodist Church, officiating.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Howard S. Craig

WESTFORD — The graveside committal service for Howard S. Craig, 80, who died Dec. 31, 2000, will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 26, 2001, at the Westford Cemetery, with the Rev. Susan Strang, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Worcester, officiating.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Arthur Bennett

WALTON — Arthur Bennett, Walton's longtime weather observer, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center, where he and his wife have been residing. He was 94.

Arthur Bennett was born on May 12, 1907, in Franklin, to Lewis and Elfleda (Merrill) Bennett.

He graduated from Delaware Literary Institute in Franklin.

On June 22, 1940, he married Bernice Merrill on her family's farm, Sunshine Farm, East Brook, Walton. The couple took over the farm and ran it for 16 years and then moved into Walton.

Arthur worked in the Walton Central School cafeteria for 11 years.

Arthur's love of the weather began when he was age 14, influenced by his maternal grandparents (Daniel Merrill was known as a weather prophet). That interest became an association with the National Weather Service and in 1997, they honored him with the Edward H. Stoll Award in recognition of more than 50 years of dedicated service to that organization. He was also the weather observer for radio station WDLA for 25 years, retiring in August 1996.

He was secretary/treasurer, then a director of the Walton Cooperative Fire Insurance Co., and a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Walton.

He was a model railroad enthusiast and he had an extensive collection of weather maps that he donated to the Mount  Washington, New Hampshire Weather Museum.

Arthur Bennett is survived by his wife, Bernice Bennett of Delhi; a sister, Doris Haney DeBevoise of Otego; a sister-in-law, Glenda More of Afton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is predeceased by a sister, Maude Chase; and a brother, Winfred Bennett.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, where friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2001. Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2001, at the Reformed Presbyterian Church, corner of East and Bruce streets, Walton, with the Rev. Scott Wilkinson officiating.

Mary Ellen Eiholzer-Taylor

MADISON, Wis. — Mary Ellen Eiholzer-Taylor, 57, passed away on Thursday, April 26, 2001, surrounded by her family at the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center Inc. inpatient unit.

She was born on Nov. 13, 1943, in Columbus, N.Y., the daughter of Carl and Ruth (Wratten) Eiholzer.

Mary Ellen started her career working with the joint chiefs of staff at the Pentagon where she met her future husband, Kent S. Taylor. On June 20, 1970, Mary Ellen and Kent were married in Norwich, N.Y. Mary Ellen and her family moved to Madison in 1976.

She worked for the UW System for the last 22 years retiring as a Human Resources Manager of the UW Department of Family Medicine.

Mary Ellen's hobbies included gardening, biking, bird watching, traveling and visiting new places, spending time with family and friends and collecting dolls, angels and frogs.

She is survived by her loving husband of 31 years, Kent; her beloved daughters, Angela and Kathleen; three brothers, Joe (Althea) Eiholzer, Ted Eiholzer and Steve (Sheila) Eiholzer; and many wonderful nieces, nephews and friends.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Carl and Everett Eiholzer.

A Mass of Christian burial was held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 401 South Owen Drive, Madison, with Monsignor Kenneth Fiedler officiating. A private burial took place at the Wisconsin's Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to a local HospiceCare Inc.

A very special thank you to all of the family and friends that have given their love and support during Mary Ellen's illness.

Dora Borst Corsall

CORTEZ, Fla. — Dora Borst Corsall, 83, formerly of Cobleskill, N.Y., died March 31, 2001, at her winter home in Cortez, Fla.

Born Aug. 6, 1917, in Schenevus, N.Y., she was the daughter of Alvin D. (Sam) Borst and Katherine (Katie) West Borst.

She was a graduate of Schenevus High School.

Mrs. Corsall was a homemaker who also helped her husband with clerical duties associated with Corsall Brothers Truck Lines, which was based in Cobleskill.

She was married on Oct. 6, 1940, to Ralph Corsall. He died Jan. 20, 1996.

Mrs. Corsall is survived by a daughter, Bernice Deinlein of Richmond, Mass.; a brother, Burton Borst of Worcester, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Amy Deinlein of Boston, Mass.; and two grandsons, Travis and Christopher Deinlein, both of Richmond, Mass.

A committal service will be held on May 26, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Schenevus Cemetery. Following the service, the family wishes to invite friends to the V.F.W. Hall located on Main Street, Schenevus, for light refreshments.

Marian Lane

SIDNEY — Marian Lane of Sidney, and formerly from Walton, passed away at her residence in Sidney, on Monday, Dec. 25, 2000.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2001, in the Walton Cemetery, Walton, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the United Methodist Church, Sidney, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Cora E. Greene

SIDNEY — Cora E. Greene, 88, of Sidney, passed away Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Norwich.

Graveside committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2001, in the Riverview Cemetery, Oxford, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the Sidney United Methodist Church, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Charles D. Cook

DELHI — Former State Sen. Charles D. Cook of Delhi died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, in Delhi. Senator Cook was a true statesman who served his constituents as a legislator as well as a friend.

Charlie was born Feb. 26, 1935, in Deposit, to Edward and Lillian Hicks Cook. He attended the one-room school in Rock Royal. In 1952 he graduated from Hancock Central School and in 1956 graduated from Hartwick College in Oneonta.

In 1957, Charlie married Dorothy Behrens, a kindergarten teacher in Walton. They were married in Oneonta.

Charlie was editor of the Bainbridge News for a year before entering the U.S. Army. After his tour of duty, he was editor of the Deposit Courier until 1965.

In 1965 Charlie was elected Delaware County treasurer. He and his family then moved to Delhi.

Charlie became Delaware County Social Services commissioner 1971 and in 1971 was elected to the New York State Assembly. In 1978 he was elected to the New York State Senate where he served for 20 years, retiring at the end of 1998.

Senator Cook served on many committees, chairing committees on education, local government, transportation and agriculture. He was the first chairman of the Legislative Commission on Rural Resources, which became known nationally for its innovative programs to address the needs of rural residents. He also served as secretary of the Legislative Commission on Critical Transportation Choices, the Council on Health Care Financing and the National Advisory Committee on Rural Health (as a presidential appointee).

As chair of the Senate Education Committee, he was the original author of what ultimately became the STAR program for relief of school property taxes.

During the confrontation with New York City over the watershed regulations, he organized meetings and hearings throughout the district, which led to the formation of the Coalition of Watershed Towns and obtained state funding to support the coalition in its court battles with the city. His leadership brought the city to the table and resulted in the historic four-way agreement.

As chair of the Rural Resources Commission, he authorized the legislation that established the state Office of Rural Health. He founded the program of state grants to assist rural health-care providers in extending and maintaining services in rural communities. He was instrumental in maintaining a $1 million annual budgetary appropriation to support rural hospitals in diversifying and expanding outpatient services, a program that is still in operation. After retirement be continued to serve as a member of the NYS Rural Health Council and the NYS Partnership Trust.

Senator Cook authored the original early-intervention legislation, which provides for early identification, diagnosis and treatment of developmental disabilities in children.

Charles Cook served as a trustee at Hartwick College and as a member of the Government Law Center Advisory Board at Albany Law School of Union College. He received an honorary doctor of laws degree at Hartwick College in 1989.

Since retirement, Cook became a trustee of O'Connor Hospital and chaired its Annual Fund financial effort. He was also a member of Friends of Bassett Hospital. He has served as a member of the board of directors of Koinonia, the campus ministry in Oneonta and is an honorary director of Delaware-Otsego Planned Parenthood. He was also a part-time adjunct lecturer, teaching state government courses at the State University College at New Paltz and Hartwick College; and United States history at the State University College of Technology at Delhi.

Most recently, Charlie served the congregation of the United Ministry as a lay speaker, pastoral care provider and true spiritual leader.

Charlie was predeceased by his parents, two stepfathers, Robert Seymour and William Schriver, several stepsisters and -brothers and two infant sons, David and Edward.

He is survived by his wife, Dottie, of Delhi, who was co-founder and longtime teacher of Delhi Christian Playschool; his daughter, Linda, and her husband, Michael Fillius, of Dale City, Va.; and two sons, John and his wife, Valerie, of Springfield, Va., and Jeffrey of San Francisco,  Calif. Also surviving are two sisters, Ethel Damonkos of Fairfield, Conn., and Mary Kelsey of Manheim, Pa.; and a brother, Edward (and Blanche) Cook of Walton. Three grandchildren Benjamin Fillius, Jessica Sinkovits and Sarah Cook of Virginia; and stepsisters, Audrey Dabulewicz of Otsego and Helen Zandt of Walton also survive.

It was Charlie's wish that his body be donated to Albany Medical Center for organ donation and medical research.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Sunday May 27, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the United Ministry Church in Delhi. A reception will follow at Alumni Hall at Delhi Tech. There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the United Ministry of Delhi Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 111, Delhi, N.Y. 13753; or to the Hartwick College Scholarship Fund in Senator Cook's name at Hartwick College, Office of Institutional Advancement, West Street, Oneonta, N.Y. 13920 or to the American Heart Association.

Beatrice H. Benson

NORWICH — Beatrice H. Benson, 76, of Chenango Valley Home, formerly of New Berlin, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, in Norwich.

She was born Aug. 12, 1924, in West Edmeston to Harry and Margie (Crandall) Bice.

She married Alf Benson on July 15, 1944. He died Dec. 13, 1994. She spent her childhood and attended school in the Columbus, N.Y., area.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Harley Hall and Linda and Ray Gregory of Norwich; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Sally Benson of New Berlin; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother Orthello "Shorty" Bice of Greensborough, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one sister Lillian Simmons in 1994.

Beatrice was at one time part-owner of the Hacienda Restaurant in New Berlin. She spent her married life with her husband, Alf, on the Benson homestead farm on West Hill, New Berlin. In 1971 they purchased what came to be known as the Sun-Ben Farm in Pittsfield, N.Y., which they operated in partnership with their son, David, until Alf's death in 1994.

At this time Bea moved to Norwich and made many friends while helping with the United Methodist Church's Soup and Sandwich Program and while residing at the Chenango Valley Home. She was an avid doll collector and had a great love for children. Although severely handicapped by rheumatoid arthritis, Bea always had a smile on her face and seldom complained. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be greatly missed.

She was a member of the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, New Berlin.

There will be a funeral service on Saturday, May 26, 2001, at 3 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Burial will be Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Calling hours will be Friday, May 25, 2001, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, New Berlin, or the Broad Street United Methodist Church, Norwich.

George A. Baldo

WEST ONEONTA — George A. Baldo, 59, of West Oneonta, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 24, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born June 19, 1941, in Oneonta, the son of Harry J. and Isabel (Goodwin) Baldo. He married Millie Cetta on Nov. 17, 1984.

He served for a period of time with the U.S. Army Reserves.

Since 1981, George has been employed by Bresee's Department Store as a kitchen designer, and before that he worked for Harry Graves. He also was involved with his wife in the operations of Millie's Place in West Oneonta,

He was a member of St. Mary's Church.

George was a softball enthusiast, and sponsored a team in the over-35 league. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and four-wheeling.

He is survived by his wife, Millie Baldo of West Oneonta; his children, Debbie Quackenbush, Dave Baldo and Charlie Baldo, all of Oneonta; his parents, Harry J. and Isabel Baldo of Oneonta; five grandchildren; an aunt; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Harry Baldo.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Saturday, May 26, 2001, at 11:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Church with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, after 4 p.m. Friday, with the family in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Building Fund, with envelopes available at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
