Elizabeth Davis

WALTON — Elizabeth Palmatier "Betty" Davis died Friday, June 8, 2001, at her home. She was 72.

Mrs. Davis was born Feb. 21, 1929, at Binghamton City Hospital.

She married Harold R. Davis on Feb. 24, 1947, in Sidney, N.Y. Harold predeceased her in July 1996.

Betty is survived by two sons, John (Shirley) Davis of Margaretville and Cecil (Carol) Davis of Bloomville; three daughters, Kathy Davis Levoy of Delaware, Barbara (Daniel) Webster of Laurens, and Jean Davis of Marco Island, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; two aunts; an uncle; and a special friend, Dorothy Smith of Bainbridge.

Betty was a housewife and a farmwife. She also worked as a nurse's aide at Delaware Valley Hospital for many years.

Her family was her pride and joy, and she enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

A graveside service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Walton Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Lyon Bros.-Way Inc., Walton, N.Y.

Edna Clark

DELHI — Edna Clark, 101, of Delhi, N.Y., died Thursday, June 7, 2001, at O'Connor Hospital in Delhi.

She was born on April 14, 1900, in the town of Kortright, the daughter of Louis and Grace (Hudson) Smith.

She was married to the late Harold L. Clark, who passed away April 19, 1979.

Mrs. Clark resided in the Delhi area all of her life. She loved to dance and attended many dances in the Meridale area. She belonged to the Meridale Presbyterian Church for many years.

Two sons, Bruce (Grace) Clark, of Alabama, and Donald (Carolyn) Clark, of Liverpool, N.Y., five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews survive.

Graveside services will take place on Monday, June 11, 2001, at 1:30 p.m. at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, with the Rev. Arvid Whitmore officiating.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Meridale Fire Department or the Delhi Fire Department.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Elsie Walker

BINGHAMTON — Elsie Walker, 83, of Norwich, passed away Thursday, June 7, 2001, at General Hospital in Binghamton.

She was born Nov. 3, 1917, daughter of the late Henry and Mary Dabney.

Elsie was married to Stanley Walker. He predeceased her in 1989.

She was employed as a school aide for the New Berlin Central School District before retiring. Elsie was very active in the activities for senior citizens at Grace View Manor, Norwich, especially bingo.

She is survived by a son, Gregory Walker; a sister and brother-in-law, Anna Mae and Robert George of Guilford; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 11, 2001, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 3 p.m. The Rev. Michael Shank of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Sidney, will officiate.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Charles D. Dropp

WALTON — Charles D. Dropp, 82, of Walton, died Thursday, June 7, 2001, at Gilmour Healthcare Facility in Norwich, NY.

He was born Feb. 15, 1919, in Rock Rift, N.Y., the son of John and Mary (Zuraway) Dropp.

Mr. Dropp was a Veteran of World War II, serving in Pearl Harbor on the day the harbor was attacked. When he returned home he worked in machine repair for Bendix Corp. in Sidney, N.Y. He resided in the Walton area all his life.

A sister, Josephine Dropp, of Oxford, N.Y.; a brother, Paul (Martha) Dropp, of Oxford; two sisters-in-law, Martha Z. Dropp of Roscoe, N.Y., and Doris Dropp, of Summerville, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews survive.

Services will take place at the convenience of the family. Burial will be at Walton Cemetery, Walton, N.Y.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, N.Y.

Margery Hollenbeck

SIDNEY — Margery W. Hollenbeck, 82, formerly of Sidney Center, died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at the Skilled Nursing Facility in Sidney.

She was born Feb. 11, 1919, daughter of the late Louis and Jenny Brown Willes in Masonville.

Margery married Erving D. Hollenbeck on Aug. 4, 1947, in  Jefferson. He predeceased her on Jan. 5, 1995.

Mrs. Hollenbeck was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her two sons and daughter-in-law, Monte and Marylee Martin, Bainbridge, and Joe Hollenbeck, Bainbridge; daughter, Janet Martin Rude, Sidney; brother, Ross Willes, Afton; sister, Esther Schwarz, Hempstead, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She is also predeceased by a brother, Frank Willes.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 3 p.m., with the Order of the Eastern Star and the Rev. Tony Hipes, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Bainbridge, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Center Emergency Squad.

Florence Hoagland

NEW BERLIN — Florence P. Hoagland, 82 years, of New Berlin, died June 9, 2001, in New Berlin.

She was born on March 26, 1919, in town of King, Polk County, Minn., the daughter of Samuel Robert and Florence Gertrude (Nelson) Prindle.

She was married to Kenneth G. Olds on July 1, 1939; and then to Howard D. Hoagland, May 9, 1979.

She spent her childhood in the Morris area. She was a graduate of Morris Central School.

She is survived by one daughter, Linda Miles, New Berlin; two grandsons, Timothy L. Miles, Collegeville, Pa., and Brian K. Miles, South New Berlin; one granddaughter, Jane Miles Hathaway, Trumansburg; six great-grandchildren, Angela, Jessica, Stephanie, Christina and Arianna Miles, and Grant Hathaway; stepgrandchildren, Daniel and Michelle Hathaway; a brother, Fred Prindle, Afton.

She was predeceased by brothers, Ray, Clifford, Frank, Floyd, Robert, Arthur and Grant; and by one sister, Alice Bonnett.

She worked as a clerk in New Berlin area stores as well as the New Berlin telephone office for 41/2 years. She also worked at Bendix in Sidney.

She liked to crochet and knit, loved flowers and enjoyed gardening.

She attended the First Baptist Church, New Berlin.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. John Carpenter, pastor of the First Baptist Church in New Berlin, officiating.

Interment will be in the Davenport Cemetery, Davenport.

Calling hours will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association or the Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.

Leighton C. Myers

ONEONTA — Leighton C. "Pete" Myers, 86, of Oneonta, died on Friday, June, 8, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born Dec. 3, 1914, in Margaretville, the son of Thomas and Bertha (Briscoll) Myers.

He married Marian Ustenovitch on Sept. 7, 1936, in Oneonta.

Pete worked 37 years on the D&H Railroad and retired in 1976, as an electrician.

He was a 55-year member of the First United Presbyterian Church, Oneonta, the Sixth Ward Athletic Club, and was past chairman of IBEW Local 612.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marian Myers of Oneonta; his grandchildren and their spouses, Leland McAdams Jr. of Oneonta, Thomas and Donna  Schmidt of Norwich, Lisa and Scott Swart of Denver, and Pam and Kenny Horth of Otego; eight great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Ronald  Schmidt of West Oneonta; his brothers and sisters, Albert Catella of Oneonta, John Catella of Emmons, Jim Catella of Oneonta, Fred Catella of Oneonta, Rose Mayo of Minnesota and Julia Bennett of Otego; along with several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two children, Eleanor McAdams and Marilyn  Schmidt. He was also predeceased by a brother, Donald Myers; and a sister, Ruth Murray; and two stepbrothers, Louis Catella and Joseph Catella.

A prayer service will be held on Tuesday evening, June 12, 2001, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Spencer C. Vangulick, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Maria Dubben

SCHENEVUS — Maria Dubben, 79, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at home after a lengthy illness.

She was born Aug. 19, 1921, in Kovin, Yugoslavia, the daughter of Petar and Agata Jepcea.

She married Raymond J. Dubben on Feb. 14, 1958, in Fort Myers Beach, Fla.

Mrs. Dubben moved to Schenevus in 1958.

She was a member of the Church of The Holy Spirit in Schenevus, the Altar Guild Society, the Schenevus Fireman's Auxiliary and the Schenevus PTA.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond J. Dubben of Schenevus; two daughters, Mary and her husband, Bill DeVierno, of Davie, Fla., and Jane and her husband, Mark Kersmanc, of Lancaster, Pa.; and a son, James and his wife, Susie Dubben, of Niceville, Fla.; seven grandchildren; a nephew and several cousins.

She was predeceased by her brother, Jon Jepcea.

Calling hours were held on Saturday, June 9, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus.

The funeral service was held 2 p.m., Sunday, June 10, 2001, at the Church of The Holy Spirit, Schenevus, with the Rev. Norman Sieme officiating.

Burial was held at the Schenevus Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Dubben to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Kenneth Secrest Sr.

UNADILLA — Kenneth H. Secrest Sr., 87, of 809 State Highway 7, Unadilla, went to be with his Lord on Saturday morning, June 9, 2001, at the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford.

He was born May 28, 1914, in China, N.Y., the son of the late Frank and Ella Cary Secrest.

Ken graduated from the Deposit High School. After high school, Kenneth worked on his father's farm and later at Scintilla in Sidney, until he enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country during World War II. He was with the 619 Engineers in the Pacific building roads and airplane runways.

He and his buddies had many reunions in the following years all over the United States. After the end of WW II, Ken returned to the work at E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney, as a machinist. He retired in 1979 after completing 48 years with the company.

Kenneth also worked as an insurance agent with Nationwide Insurance Company for 18 years. In his later years, he sold for the Cherry Valley Insurance Company and served on its Board of Directors for several years.

On July 27, 1947, he married Mary Whitman in Oneonta.

He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church, Sidney, where he served as chairman of the Board of Trustees. Ken had memberships in Masonville Lodge #606 and Sidney Lodge #801 F.&A.M. He had served as Master in both lodges for several times as well as their District Deputy. Mr. Secrest also was a member in the Sidney-Masonville-Ouleout Lodge #255 O.E.S. and Unadilla Lodge #179, where he served as Patron and District Lecture for several years.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Secrest, Unadilla; son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Sherry Secrest Jr., Unadilla; three granddaughters, Amber Brite, Crystal Ley and Jem Marie Secrest, all of Unadilla; brother and sister-in-law, Francis and Margie Secrest, Afton; two sisters and brother-in-law, Gert Huyck, Sandy Creek, and Charla and Edwin Brych, Clifton Park; sister-in-law, Carol Secrest, Rome; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

His two brothers, Frederick and Harold Secrest, predeceased him.

He loved his dogs, his latest being Cookie.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 12, 2001, from the First Baptist Church, Sidney, with the Rev. David Fraher, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla. Friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Masonic services will be held at 7:30 p.m. followed by Eastern Star Services at 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Veterans Home Memorial Fund, Oxford, N.Y. or to the First Baptist Church, Sidney, N.Y.

Alberta Kent

ENDICOTT — Alberta (Sanders) Kent of Endicott passed away after a valiant struggle Friday evening, June 8, 2001, at Wilson Hospital.

Alberta was born in Cambridge Springs, Pa., on Sept. 30, 1937.

She was predeceased by her father, Barton Sanders.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Leonard; their daughter, Denise and her husband, Gregory; a son, Len J.; a son, Bradley and his wife, Kathryn. Alberta and Leonard have six grandchildren, Nathan and Holly Straut, and Charlotte, Joshua, Ethan and Clarissa Kent. She is also survived by her mother, Florence Sanders; a brother, Maylon Sanders and his wife, Barbara; her sister, Charlotte Gilson and her husband, Donald; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She graduated from Edinboro High School and Thiel College.

She retired from the New York Office of Court Administration as a criminal court clerk.

Alberta was an active member of Central United Methodist Church. She was a member of United Methodist Women and served on various church boards.

Alberta took pleasure in her family, home life, church and her work. She looked for the good in every person and in every situation. She was optimistic to the very end of her life. She will be missed not only by her family but by all who knew her.

The family wishes to express its gratitude to her church family and the many friends who were so kind and considerate.

Funeral services will be held at Central United Methodist Church, Endicott, Tuesday at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends at the Coleman & Daniels Funeral Home, 300 E. Main St., Endicott, on today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the American Brain Tumor Association, 2720 River Road, Suite 146, Des Plains, Ill., 60018.

Wilson Miller

STAMFORD — Wilson Miller died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta, after a long illness.

Born in Cobleskill on Aug. 7, 1920, he was the son or Lucius and Emma (Hartwell) Miller, and was a lifelong area resident.

Wilson is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Elsie (Hallock); seven children, Jeff Miller of Florida, Cheryl Reis of Tennessee, Patricia Burton of Andes, Marlene Stevens of Andes, Nancy Vitale of Middleburgh, Robert Miller of Stamford and Brenda Hopkins of Fort Johnson; four brothers and a sister, Paul (Ruth) of Fort Johnson, Francis (Marion) of New York Mills, Carl Sr. (Carol) of Summit, Russell (Mavis) and Marjorie Felter (Robert) of West Fulton. Also surviving are several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be private.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Richard T. Moore

ONEONTA — Committal services with military honors for Richard T. Moore will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 14, 2001, at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford, with the Rev. Anthony Ligato, officiating.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.
