Margaret L. Griffin

WALTON — Margaret L. Griffin, a longtime Walton resident, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at her 44 Bruce St. home. She was 94.

Miss Griffin retired in 1968, after teaching kindergarten for 39 years for the Endicott School District.

Miss Griffin was born Jan. 16, 1907, in Walton to Frank B. and Christina (Hodge) Griffin.

She graduated from Walton High School in 1926 and earned a professional teacher's degree in kindergarten-primary grade from the University of New York State Normal School in 1929.

She was a lifelong member of the United Presbyterian Church of Walton and a member of the New York state Teacher's Association.

Miss Griffin was recognized for her membership in the Citizen's Service Corp. by the New York state War Council.

She will always be fondly remembered by her family and former students.

Miss Griffin's family will receive visitors on Saturday, July 14, 2001, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Lyon
Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home — corner of North and Delaware streets in Walton. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. James Martin of her church officiating. Burial in Walton
Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the United Presbyterian Church — 58 East St., Walton, NY, 13856 — in her name would be appreciated.

Earl Fred Gillette

ILION — Mr. Earl Fred Gillette Sr., 65, of Ilion, passed away on July 11, 2001, at St. Luke's Hospital in New Hartford, after a long illness.

Mr. Gillette was born on Aug. 12, 1935, in South Valley. He was the son of Fred and Joyce (Hoke) Gillette.

He was a finish carpenter by trade and had lived in the area for the last 14 years.

He took great enjoyment in his family and enjoyed his many years of bowling throughout the area.

He is survived by three sons, Earl F. Jr., Scott R. and Dan O'Dell, all of Ilion.; and five grandchildren. Also two sisters and their husbands, Mrs. Norman (Marilyn) Mollen and Mrs. William (Ruth) Hendricks, both of South Valley; and nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, July 14, 2001, from noon to 2 p.m., with a 2 p.m.
funeral service. Services will be at the Ottman Funeral Home — 22 Church St. in Cherry
Valley. Burial will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home — 22 Church St. in Cherry Valley.

Gilbert D. Matteson

SIDNEY — Gilbert D. Matteson, 85, of Sidney, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at the Skilled Nursing Facility in Sidney.

He was born Jan. 16, 1916, son of Jesse A. and Amy Klein Matteson in New Rochelle.

Gilbert married Norma Whitehouse in 1946 in New Rochelle.

He was employed as a ceramic engineer for E.C.D. of Bendix in Sidney when he retired in 1978.

Mr. Matteson was a member of the United Methodist Church of Sidney.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Matteson, of Sidney; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Sandra Matteson, of Jonesboro, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Carol Ann Matteson and Dennis Greene, of Bainbridge; four grandchildren, Wendy Tatham, Tracy Matteson, Summer Sloane-Greene and Kit Sloane; and two great-grandchildren, Zachary and Tyler Tatham.

Memorial services will be announced at a later time.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of Sidney.

Ruth N. Lutz

ROXBURY — Ruth N. Lutz, 77, of Roxbury, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 12, 2001. She left peacefully at her daughter Fran's home in Phelps among family and friends, following a brief illness.

She was born July 27, 1923, in Jamestown, the daughter of Frances (Beaty) and Frederick W. Nisson.

She was married to Willis L. Lutz on Oct. 6, 1945, in Jamestown.

She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Willis (Bill) Lutz.

She is survived by her children, Marian (Mame) Johnston and husband Douglas of Cary, N.C., Fred Lutz of Homer, Fran Knitter and husband David of Phelps; a sister, Martha Magnuson and husband Don; grandchildren Douglas B. Johnston and wife Terri, Jim Johnston and wife Denise, Noelle and Andrew Lutz and Allie and Kelsey Knitter; great-grandchildren, Kayla, Douglas, Mariah and Jenna Johnston; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Claude W. Lutz; and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth was a graduate of Celoron High School in 1940 and a 1944 graduate of Syracuse University, where she was a member of the Chi Omega sorority. She was a member of the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, having served as its choir director for 30 years. She was a member of the Beta Omicron chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and a past president.

Ruth has been a resident of Roxbury since 1944, when she came to teach music at Roxbury Central School. She touched many lives during her career as an educator. She enjoyed her family, friends, music and nature.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ontario-Yates Hospice, 756 Pre-Emption Road, Geneva, NY 14456-1336; Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church Music Fund, Roxbury, NY 12474; Jamestown Audubon Nature Center, 1600 Riverside Road, Jamestown, NY 14701; and the Hour of Power, Garden Grove, CA 92642.

A memorial service will be held at Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church on Monday, July 16, 2001, at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends after the service at the Carriage House on the church grounds.

Robert L. Barney

ONEONTA — Robert L. Barney, 66, of Oneonta, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at A.0. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Jan. 22, 1935, in Oneonta, the son of Lynn and Irene (Hayes) Barney.

Bob was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He owned and operated Barney & Son's Well Drilling in Oneonta. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed the outdoors.

He is survived by his mother, Irene Barney of Ballston Lake; a daughter, Vickie Allsup of Rocklin,  Calif.; three sons, Bobby Barney and Shaun Barney of Binghamton and Wade Barney of Morris; six grandchildren; a sister, Shirley Jenks of Ballston Lake; four nephews; and one niece.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home at 357 Main St. in Oneonta. The Rev. John Greiner, pastor of the Assembly of God Church of Oneonta, will officiate.

Burial will follow at the Mount Vision Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 17, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. for those who wish to call.

It has been requested that, in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy be made to the American
Lung Association of Mid-New York — 587 Main St., Suite 109, New York Mills, NY 13417 — in loving memory of Robert L. Barney.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Keith D. Durgee

ILION — There will be a graveside service on Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at 1 p.m. at St. Agnes Cemetery in Ilion for Keith David Durgee, who passed away Oct. 7, 2000, in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Keith was born in Osceola on April 4, 1932. He grew up in Ilion.

He worked for the state of New York for 22 years, retiring in 1985. The last nine years of his career were spent in Oneonta where he was maintenance supervisor at the State University College of Oneonta.

Keith is survived by his wife of 46 years, Barbara Durgee of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; daughters, Susan Salmons of Rochester, Sharon Frye, of Vancouver, Wash., Victoria Durgee of Daytona, Fla., Laurel Gyes, of Vancouver, Wash., Bethany Przestrzelski of Durham, N.C.; and nine grandchildren.

Theresa Kangas

WEST ONEONTA — Theresa Elizabeth (Schraft) Kangas, 84, of West Oneonta, passed away Thursday, July 12, 2001, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born Dec. 23, 1916, in Delta,  Colo.

She was a longtime resident of Laurens and was employed at Astrocom Electronics Inc. in Colliersville for many years. After retirement from Astrocom, she enjoyed many lunches with the retirees once a month and had moved from Laurens to state Route 23, outside West Oneonta, to reside.

She enjoyed dancing, music and loved taking trips with Mildred Chase on the Oneonta Bus Lines. She also loved her bears; she had a collection of well over 300 (with Nickie, her favorite, who went everywhere with her).

She was a member of the Laurens Senior Citizens.

She was predeceased by her husband, Toivo A. Kangas; parents, Elsie and Max Schraft; and sister, Julia Jones.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Annabelle and Erman Cocci of Schenectady and Carolee and Ralph Wright of Gilbertsville; two grandchildren, Michael Cocci of Schenectady and Kelly and Stephen Bednarz of Andover, Conn.; and two great-grandchildren, Adam and Casey Elizabeth Bednarz of Andover, Conn. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Alva Kangas of Gardnerville, Nev.; and two cousins, Ruth Rowland of Austin,  Colo., and Dorothy Blore of Standish, Maine. She is also survived by eight nieces; nine nephews; and family and friends (and dear friends, Pat and Joe Fox who called her every morning).

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Bookhout Funeral Home at 357 Main St. in Oneonta, with the Rev. Harry Myers, pastor of the Laurens Presbyterian Church, officiating. Friends may call on Thursday, July 19, 2001, from 1 to 2 p.m., before the service, when the family will be present at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Bennett Cemetery in West Laurens.

Donations may be made to the West Laurens Fire Department, 2766 State Route 23, West Oneonta, NY 13861, in memory of Theresa Elizabeth Kangas.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes of Oneonta and Otego.

Raymond C. Nealis

DELHI — Raymond C. Nealis, 86, of Delhi, passed away Saturday, July 14, 2001, at Countryside Care Center, following an extended illness.

The son of the late Raymond C. and Anne (Roberts) Nealis, he was born April 2, 1915, in Richmond Hill, Queens, and married Lydia R. Sylvander on April 6, 1940, in Springfield Gardens. She died March 27, 1993.

A former Springfield Gardens and Stewart Manor resident for more than 30 years, Ray was a conductor on the Long Island Railroad.

He moved to Bovina in 1971, where he served as town constable and subsequently justice of the peace, as well as bailiff in the Delaware County Court.

A Delhi resident since 1984, he had been living at Countryside Care Center since 1999.

An ordained elder in the Springfield Gardens Presbyterian Church, Ray was instrumental in founding the Delhi Assembly of God.

He was also a member of Springfield Gardens Masonic Lodge #1057; the Long Island Railroad Square Club; past president of the St. George Association; the Bovina Fire Department; a longtime Boy Scout master; and an accomplished artist of oil paintings.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, John R. II and Gwenn Nealis of Delhi; five grandchildren, John III, Glenn, Aubrynn, Dylan Nealis and Elizabeth Merrill; a sister, Anna Werner of Albertson; and several in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call today (Tuesday) and the family will be in attendance after 7 p.m. at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home in Delhi, where the Delhi Lodge will conduct Masonic services at 8:45 p.m. and where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 18. The Rev. Arvid Whitmore will officiate, and burial will follow in the Bovina Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund of Delhi.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet and Son, Delhi.

Hazel T. Fairbairn

DELHI — Hazel Todd Fairbairn died July 15, 2001, at Countryside Care Center in Delhi, where she had been a resident for many years.

Mrs. Fairbairn was born on May 27, 1909, in the Dry Brook Valley, where she grew up and spent most of her adult life. She was the 10th child and last survivor of the Sabra Knickerbocker Todd and Lyman H. Todd family. Her brothers were George, Charles, Sylvaneus, Leland and Lyman Jr., and her sisters were Sadie Baker, Ethel Hanley, Florence Fuller Todd and Mary Elizabeth, who died in childhood.

She married Hiram J. Fairbairn on Nov. 26, 1927, who preceded her in death in January 1962.

Mrs. Fairbairn is survived by a son, Allen T. Fairbairn and his wife, Marjorie of Rome, Pa., and St. Augustine, Fla.; and a daughter, Shirley F. Truran and husband, Kenneth of St. Augustine, Fla. She had eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Fairbairn will be remembered for her fondness of blackberry picking, making pies and breads and playing pinochle with her friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 27, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Advent Christian Church in Margaretville. A private graveside service for family members will be held immediately following the church service at the cemetery in Clovesville, where Mrs. Fairbairn will be laid to rest next to her late husband.

Friends may call at the church one hour before the funeral service. A luncheon for family and friends will be held at the church, following the service.

In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Fairbairn requested that donations be made in her name to the Salvation Army.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home of Margaretville.

Robert W. Burch

SOUTH EDMESTON — Robert W. Burch, 86, died July 16, 2001, at home in South Edmeston.

He was born Sept. 10, 1914, in the town of Brookfield, the son of John and Sarah (Brown) Burch.

He married Wanda Whitacre on May 27, 1954. She survives.

He spent his childhood in the Unadilla Forks and Bridgewater areas.

He was a graduate of Bridgewater School.

He was a dairy farmer. He also worked and trained Belgian horses.

He was a member of the Columbus Quarter Baptist Church in the town of Columbus.

He is survived by two sisters, Madeline Hurlbutt of New Berlin and Doris Root of West Edmeston, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one brother, Ralph Burch, and one sister, Thelma Jones.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin, with the Rev. Jeff McLallen of the South Edmeston Community Church officiating.

Interment will be in the Gazlay Cemetery in South Edmeston.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, July 18, 2001, from noon to 2 p.m. preceding the funeral service at the Dakin Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Gazlay Cemetery Association, 240 County Highway #20, South Edmeston, NY 13411.

Giovanna Goodchild

ONEONTA — Giovanna (Jennie) Goodchild, 91, of Oneonta, passed away July 14, 2001, at her residence unexpectedly.

She was born Feb. 10, 1910, in Alvignano, Italy, the daughter of Anthony and Philomena (Riccio) Ross.

She married Joseph Mulqueen in 1932. She was married to Henry Goodchild in 1942.

Mrs. Goodchild was a seamstress for the Oneonta Dress Co. until her retirement in 1972.

She was a member of the St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Phillip (Jeanette) Colone of Oneonta; four granddaughters, Gina and her husband, Mark Spaziani, Lori and her husband, Ed Dower, and Annette Colone, all of Oneonta, Patricia and her husband, Todd Ringler of Swampscott, Mass.; and a sister, Viola Campiglia of Bayside.

She was predeceased by four brothers, Aldivine, Anthony Sr., William and Alberto Ross.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 20, 2001, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home of Oneonta.
