Raymond Baker

ONEONTA — Raymond Charles Baker, 85, of Oneonta passed away Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta after a short illness.

He was born March 25, 1916, in Oneonta, the son of Louis M. and Grace (Platt) Baker.

On March 25, 1945, he married Jean Stuck at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Ind. Mrs. Baker died May 12, 1998.

Mr. Baker graduated from Oneonta High School in 1934 and received a business administration degree from Hartwick College in 1938.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1939 to 1945, as a finance officer.

In 1946, he and his brother joined Baker Hardware on Main Street in Oneonta, which they owned and operated until 1973. Since 1974, Mr. Baker had been associated with Northrup Plumbing Supply Co. in Oneonta, until his retirement in 1997.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta, BPOE 1312 of Oneonta, American Legion Post 259, the Oneonta Country Club and was a former member of the town planning board.

He greatly enjoyed the game of golf and spent the last three winters in Florida.

He is survived by two daughters, Margaret B. Witherbee of Rixeyville, Va., and Suzanne B. Clark of Vestal; six grandchildren, Heather and Tim Gallien of Denver, Holly Gallien of Los Angeles, Justin Gallien of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Jason and Andrew Clark of Vestal; one sister, Mrs. James (Beatrice) Glamore of Smithtown; a sister-in-law, Sherry D. Baker of Oneonta; seven nieces and nephews, Mrs. James (Irene) Konstanty and Daniel L. Baker of Oneonta, Stephen F. Baker of Marysville, Kan., William, Robert and Elizabeth Glamore and Ann Glamore Brady; and several grandnieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, John Baker.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at the First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Kenneth Baldwin officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Oneonta. The family will be receiving friends in the social hall of the church following the service.

There will be no calling hours.

Those who wish can make contributions to either A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Hartwick College or the Oneonta Elks Club.

Arrangements are by Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St. in Oneonta.

Meta Foster

BAINBRIDGE — Meta Foster, 77, of Juliand Street in Bainbridge lost her quiet battle with cancer at the Valley View Manor Nursing Home in Norwich on Monday evening, Aug. 13, 2001.

She was born July 31, 1924, in Newbliss, Co. Monaghan, Ireland, the daughter of the late Samuel and Tillie Sloan Foster and the little sister of Victor and Howard. The family immigrated to the United States in the early 1930s, settling in Bainbridge.

Meta graduated from the Bainbridge High School Class of 1944 and went on to become a licensed practical nurse. The family opened Chenango County's first nursing facility, The Conamore Home on Front Street. Meta spent her entire life caring for others at The Conamore and at the Juliand Street residence she shared with her mother, Tillie, until her death in 1984.

Meta had a strong faith in Christ, which sustained her throughout her entire life.

She is survived by her brother, Victor; his children, Gary and Kathie Foster of Bainbridge, Vickie and Mitch Glover of Sidney and Dale and Liz Foster of Bainbridge; Howard's children, David and Kathy Hohreiter Foster of Gonzales, La., Alicia and David Palmer of Union Springs, John and Mary Foster of Auburn and Richard and Penny Foster of Union Springs. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Foster Leonard of Big Sandy,  Texas, and Bainbridge; and several great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. in Sidney. Burial will follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge.

Friends are invited to call from 1 p.m. until service time at 3 p.m. with her family in attendance at the funeral chapel.

Alex Bristen

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Alex Bristen, 83, of Monticello Street, passed away Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, as a result of an automobile accident.

He was born Sept. 15, 1917, in Hamtramck, Mich., son of the late George and Anna Sawka Bristen.

Alex was raised and educated in Hamtramck, where he graduated with the Class of 1936. He then went on to graduate from Wayne State and Saint Lawrence Tech with degrees in engineering.

He worked five years for the Chrysler Corp. and 30 years for Vickers Hydraulics, retiring in 1955.

In 1952, he married Alice Nichols in Detroit. For many years of his retirement, he and his wife traveled with their Air Stream Trailer to many parts of the United States and went as far south as the Panama Canal. He and his wife settled in Richfield Springs in 1973, coming from Detroit.

Mr. Bristen was an honorably discharged U.S. Army veteran. He served from 1941 to 1945, being discharged as gun commander with the rank of master sergeant. He was at Iwo Jima when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. He had received seven overseas bars, the American Defense Ribbon and two Bronze Battle Stars.

He had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Holy Assumption Orthodox Church in Detroit.

Alex is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Alice; a brother, George and his wife, Irene, Bristen of Dearborne, Mich.; a sister, Nadja, and her husband, Dr. Nicholas Cherup of Rochester Hills, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were private and at the convenience of the family.

W. Wayne Wightman

BORDENTOWN TOWNSHIP, N.J. — W. Wayne Wightman, 87, of Bordentown Township, N.J., died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at Robert Wood  Johnson University Hospital at Hamilton.

Born in Milford, he resided in Bakersfield,  Calif., before moving to Bordentown in 1958.

He graduated from Temple University in 1937, receiving his bachelor's degree, and, in 1938, he received his master's degree from the University of  Pennsylvania.

He was employed by Agway in several states before retiring as manager of the seed division of Agway in Bordentown after 34 years of service.

He was a member of the Chesterfield Keen Agers senior-citizen group.

He was predeceased by his parents, Daniel B. and L. Mae Blencoe Wightman; and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Cyrus and Pauline Wightman and Charles Wightman.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Flebut Wightman of Bordentown; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Leah Dante of Cobleskill, Laura Mabey of Portsmouth, N.H., and Velma and Donald Mostar of Richmondville; and three sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Mary Wightman of Milford, Eileen Russell of Belchertown, Mass., and James and Kathleen Doubleday of Pelham, Mass.

Cremation was private, and there will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date to be announced. Burial will be in the Wightman Family Cemetery in the town of Maryland.

Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 710 W. 168th St., New York, NY 10032-9982.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Huber-Moore Funeral Home, 517 Farnsworth Ave., Bordentown, NJ 08505.

Roger D. Simmons

WALTON — Roger D. Simmons, 84, previously of Portlandville, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton.

He had been a resident at the Park Terrace Adult Home for one year.

He was born May 11, 1917, in Edmeston, the son of Henry "Carl" and Lula (Woodworth) Simmons.

He married Ada E. Card on Oct. 22, 1939. She predeceased him on March 15, 1999. He was also predeceased by his sister, Helen Merriman, and two brothers, Ralph and Renwick Simmons.

Roger was a farmer for many years. However, he was retired from Country Club Chevrolet in Oneonta.

He enjoyed hunting and playing guitar in his active days.

He is survived by his two children and their spouses, Donald and Rosa Simmons of Portlandville and Glenda and Donald McEntee of Walton, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston. Calling hours are Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Interment will be at Edmeston Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Roger's memory to either the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home of Edmeston.

Edna N. Grover

COOPERSTOWN — Committal services for Edna N. Grover, who died on Jan. 27, 2001, will be held at the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery, on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at 10 a.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service of Cooperstown and Milford.

Robert W. Crider

ONEONTA — Robert W. Crider, 75, of Oneonta, died Wednesday evening, Aug. 15, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born July 27, 1926, in Sayre, Pa., the son of Charles Montgomery and Olive Mae (Hull) Crider.

He married Leona Virginia Sullivan on June 30, 1946, in Oneonta. She survives him.

Mr. Crider was a longtime resident of Oneonta, since his marriage.

Before his retirement, he worked for the town of Oneonta Highway Department and Bundy Ready Mix Concrete of Oneonta.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

As a pastime, he enjoyed woodworking.

Mr. Crider was of the Methodist faith and attended Elm Park United Methodist Church in Oneonta.

He is survived by his wife, Leona of Oneonta; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Wayne Robert and Michelle Crider of Red Book, Thomas George Crider of North Las Vegas, Nev.; one daughter and son-in-law, Donna Jeanne and Alfred H. Grant Jr. of Corning; one grandson and his wife, Kevin and Valerie Crider of Conyers, Ga.; four granddaughters, Kimberly and her husband, Christopher, Shaver of Gansevoort, Lorin and her husband, James, Whorf of Glens Falls and Holly Ann and Kelly Leigh Grant of Corning; four great-grandchildren, Courtney Marie and Aaron Michael Whorf of Glens Falls, Emily Jayne and Rachel Lorin Shaver of Gansevoort; one brother and sister-in-law, Herman E. and Myrtle Crider of Colorado Springs,  Colo.; one brother-in-law and his wife, David and Evelyn Sullivan of Otego; his mother-in-law, Ada Flynn of Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta. He is also survived by several adored nieces and nephews.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St. in Oneonta, with the Rev. Joseph Fiske, retired Methodist minister of Morris, officiating.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

A private graveside service will be held at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery in Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the Elm Park United Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in memory of Robert W. Crider.

Lillian F. Johanson

DELHI — Lillian F. Johanson, 89, of Delhi died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at home.

She was born in Brooklyn on Oct. 27, 1911, the daughter of Jennie and Fred Lang.

She graduated from Wadleigh High School and from Hunter College, where she received a bachelor's degree and completed the courses required to take the New York City Teacher's Examination. After a short period of teaching, she changed her profession and worked as credit manager for Simplicity Pattern Company until she retired and moved to Delhi to join her husband, Edwin, at their beautiful "Maple Shade Farm." Shortly thereafter, her beloved sister, Dorothy Lang, purchased and moved to a home in the village of Delhi.

When Edwin died in 1999, she sold the farm and spent her final years with her sister among good neighbors and friends.

Her sister, Dorothy Lang of Delhi and several cousins survive her.

Memorial services for Mrs. Johanson will take place on Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Delhi, with Chaplain John Dawson officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions in her memory can be made to Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Albert McNett

STAMFORD — Albert Wollaston McNett Jr., 31, of Stamford died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at the Albany Medical Center from injuries sustained in an automobile accident a week earlier.

He was born on Aug. 6, 1970, in  Washington, D.C., the son of Christine Edwards of Harrisonburg, Va., and the late Albert Wollaston McNett Sr.

Mr. McNett grew up in Orange County, Va., and lived in Richmond, Va., and Brooklyn before moving to Stamford.

He was a carpenter. He attended Orange County (Va.) High School and Virginia Commonwealth University.

On July 15, 2000, he married Jamie Clark, who survives him. Also surviving are two brothers, Stephen Michael McNett of Richmond, Va., and Edward Christian McNett of Waynesboro, Va.

A memorial service will be held on Aug. 18, 2001, at his residence at 11 a.m.

Flowers can be sent to the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St. in Stamford.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home under the direction of William A. Tari.

Harry Merrill

HOBART — Harry Merrill, 83, of Hobart died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Nov. 4, 1917, in Sidney, the son of Frank and Orlena Merrill.

Mr. Merrill was a lifelong area resident who worked in dairy farming.

A brother, Sewart Merrill of Oneonta, and close friend, Janet Toth of Ridgefield, Conn., survive.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart, with the Rev. Steven Young Kim officiating. Calling hours will be on Saturday, preceding the service, from 1:30 p.m. until service time. Burial will be at Locust Hill Cemetery in Hobart.

Contributions in his memory can be made to the Hobart Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Hobart.

Carol Desmond

ONEONTA — Carol Ann (Okeefe) Desmond of Oneonta died unexpectedly Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, in Oneonta.

A memorial service will be held in her memory on Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at the Mountain View Social Club — 9 River St. — at 1:30 p.m., with the Rev. Judy Thistle officiating.

All friends are welcome.

Irene Decker

HOBART — Irene Anna (Fox) Decker, passed away March 9, 2001.

Committal services will be held Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Grant Cemetery in Hobart township, Hobart.
