Adrian L. Wells

SPRINGFIELD CENTER — Mr. Adrian (Jim) L. Wells, 86, a lifelong resident of Otsego County, passed away Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

Jim was born Sept. 4, 1915, on Angel Hill in the town of Exeter, the son of Earl A. and Mabel (Wolfen) Wells.

He attended school at Exeter Center. When the family moved to Schuyler Lake, Jim worked for local farmers and helped his father with a small trucking business.

In 1941, Jim moved to East Springfield with his parents and assisted in the operation of a small dairy farm. With the sale of the farm in the early '60s he and his mother moved to Springfield Center. Jim then went to work in the dietary department at Bassett Hospital. After Jim's retirement from Bassett Hospital, he cared for his mother until her death.

Jim had a great love for the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed playing cards. In later years, he attended and volunteered at the senior meals site in Richfield Springs, where he made many friends and had some great card games.

He is survived by a brother, Robert Wells of Canajoharie; nephews and nieces, Eugene and Mary Lou Wells of Springfield Center, Richard and Gladys Wells of Sylvester, Ga., Virginia and Ed Ray of Richfield Springs, James and Sue Wells of Richfield Springs, Betty and Charlie Long of Fort Worth,  Texas, and Gerald and Elsie Wells of Burlington Flats; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, John E. Wells.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Ron Fralick officiating

Burial will follow in the Lakeview Cemetery in Richfield Springs.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16, at the funeral home. The family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Wells memory may be made to the First Responders — Springfield Fire Department.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home of Cherry Valley.

Fred A. Montella

MARGARETVILLE — Fred A. Montella, 59, Millbrook Road, Margaretville, passed away Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

He was born Nov. 23, 1941, in New York City, the son of Ciro and Viola (Bertolina) Montella. He was single.

He was a sales person and had been employed by Terra A. Real Estate Co., Margaretville.Fred had been a local resident since 1985, moving here from Staten Island. Fred moved to this area to enjoy hunting and fishing.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Margaretville.

He is survived by three brothers, Salvatore Montella, John Montella and Ralph Montella; a sister, Ann Cofresi; four nieces and four nephews; one grandniece; and many friends Fred enjoyed in Margaretville and Staten Island.

A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell, celebrant, officiating.

Calling hours will be held at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, Monday and Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.Contributions may be made in memory of Fred. A. Montella to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Ricky Oren Byam

SCHENEVUS — Ricky Oren Byam, 44, of Schenevus, passed away Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born May 24, 1957, son of Herbert O. and Esther Quick Byam in Schenevus.

Ricky is survived by his mother, Esther Byam, of Tennessee; three sisters, Kathy Murabito of Tennessee, Debra Cambone of Oregon and Terri Stevens of Morris; two brothers, Kim Byam of California and Herbert Byam of Schenevus.

His father, Herbert; brother, Butch; and sister, Beth Gallup, predeceased him.

Services are private and at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Burtice Gifford

BAINBRIDGE — Burtice Gifford, 62, of county Route 38, Bainbridge, passed away unexpectedly Friday evening, Sept. 14, 2001, at Wilson Memorial Hospital,  Johnson City.

He was born April 7, 1939, in Sidney, the son of the late Henry and Ruth Mott Gifford.

He was a lifelong area resident and was a well-respected logger.

He is survived by his partner in life, Susan Ward of Bainbridge; two sons, James Gifford of  West Virginia and Bart Gifford of Arizona; four daughters, Cynthia Carr of  West Virginia, Christina Gifford of Bainbridge, Carina Shultis of Afton and Celina Pasche of  Pennsylvania; a sister, Beverly Jenkins of Florida; 13 grandchildren; two nephews and a niece.

Memorial services will be at 8 p.m. today, Sept. 17, 2001, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Friends are invited to call from 7 p.m. until time of services at 8 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Belle S. Kniffin

MILFORD — Mrs. Belle S. Kniffin, 99, formerly of West Main Street, Milford, died Friday evening, Sept. 14, 2001, at The Meadows.

She was born on Aug. 28, 1902, in Milford, a daughter of Fred and Nellie (Whitlock) Sargent.

She was married to Clyde Spencer on Oct. 15, 1919, in Milford Center. He died on May 9, 1948. She then married J. Kennington Kniffin on July 17, 1950, in Milford. He died on Nov. 5, 1978.

A lifelong resident of Milford, Belle attended local schools and was for many years employed as an assistant matron at the Otsego County Infirmary and later The Meadows. She retired in 1976.

At one time Belle attended the former Milford Presbyterian Church and was currently a member of the Milford United Methodist Church.

She especially enjoyed the company of her many friends in the Milford community and was fond of crocheting.

She is survived by two nieces, Mrs. Belle M. Barkman and Mary Stelter, both of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and a nephew, William F. Roberts of Otego.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Nellie Rose McCumber, who died on Jan. 18, 1994; a son-in-law, Charles H. McCumber, who died on Dec. 4, 1987; and a sister, Maude Roberts.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, in the Milford Cemetery, with the Rev. M. Lynn Snyder, pastor of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or the Milford Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 211, Milford, N.Y. 13807-0211.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Beatrice P. Rose

LAURENS — Beatrice P. Rose, 71, of Laurens, died Friday evening, Sept. 14, 2001, at her residence.

She was born Oct. 21, 1929, in Oneonta, the daughter of Merton E. and Leona (Bostwick) Place.

She married Richard K. Rose on May 2, 1948, in Laurens. He died Nov. 19, 1999.

A lifelong area resident, she had been a homemaker in her own home and was a bartender for Laurens American Legion Post 1688, retiring in 1994. At one time she had worked for the Oneonta Dress Co. and Fairway Dress Co., both in Oneonta.

A graduate of Laurens Central School, Bea was a member of Laurens American Legion Auxiliary Post 1688, the Mount Vision United Methodist Church and the Oneonta chapter of the D.A.R.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Douglas L. and Carolyn Rose of Laurens: a daughter, Rena D. Rose of Laurens; one brother and sister-in-law, Gerald A. and Virginia Place of Laurens; grandchildren, Teri and Butch Wells of Oneonta, Wayne and Brenda Carvin of Toddsville, Sara and Shad Burgher of Laurens, Tyler and Billi-Rena Rose, Jeff, Danielle and Jaimi Vadja of Laurens; great-grandchildren, Alyssa Eli and Stephan Burgher, both of Laurens and Kristen and Gerald Wells of Oneonta; a nephew and his wife, Larry and Loretta Place of Oneonta.

Bea will be cremated and a graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at the Laurens Cemetery, Laurens, with the Rev. Harry Myers, pastor of the Laurens Presbyterian Church, officiating.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in memory of Beatrice P. Rose.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Marjorie McKown

FRANKLIN — Marjorie E. McKown, 82, of Franklin, passed away Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at her home.

She was born Dec. 23, 1918, in Unadilla, the daughter of Herbert and Murel (Hine) Jordan.

She was married to Douglas I. McKown on Nov. 8, 1946, in Oxford.

She was a graduate of Unadilla Central School and was a lifelong area resident.

She enjoyed cooking, baking and was an avid collector of all kinds of frogs.

She was a member of TOPS of Unadilla and a member of the Unadilla American Legion Auxiliary.

Marjorie is survived by her husband, Douglas McKown of Franklin; her daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Ken Saunders of Sidney, Lucinda and Rich Drewes of Concord, N.C., and Denise and Matt Kelly of Otego; her sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Mary McKown of Bainbridge and Douglas and Beth McKown of Unadilla; her brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Kay Jordan of Unadilla; her grandchildren, Jacqueline, Shawn and Todd Earl, Thomas Roberts, Stacey Strain, Heather and Ember McKown; her great-grandchildren, Cameron Earl and Saige Roberts; also several nieces, nephews and best friend "Lucky."

She was predeceased by her sisters, Marion Francisco and Beatrice Pangaro.

Graveside services for the family will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, in East Sidney Union Cemetery, East Sidney, with the Rev. Craig W. Merritt, pastor of the Otego Baptist Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. today, when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Dialysis Unit of Bassett Healthcare of Oneonta or the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Marichen Pape

SCHENEVUS — Marichen Christine Pape died on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, in the home of her daughter, Eleanor Hamill, after a brief illness.

Marichen was born on Oct. 15, 1906, in Drangstedt, Germany, the daughter of Heinrich and Christine Kuwver.

She came to New York City at 17 to work and later married the late Henry Pape. They lived and worked in New York until 1941, when they moved to Schenevus and worked their dairy farm until they retired. Mrs. Pape continued to live on the farm after the death of her husband in 1981.

Marichen helped her husband on the farm where they also entertained many relatives and friends during the summer for many years. She also worked for many years at the Schenevus Glove Shop. After retiring, Mr. and Mrs. Pape spent many winters in Florida.

Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting and bowling.

Mrs. Pape was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Atonement in Oneonta.

She is survived by three children, Henry J. and Madeline Pape of Glendale, Long Island, Dennis and Eleanor Pape Hamill of Maryland and Arthur J. and Judith Pape of Melbourne, Fla.

Mrs. Pape has 15 grandchildren, Cheryl, William and Henry Pape, Christine, Deborah, Linda, Dennis, James, Rebecca, Eleanor and Rachel Hamill and Veronica, Valerie, Victoria and Virginia Pape. Mrs. Pape also has 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for the family of Marichen will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Marichen Pape's memory can be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y., Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 county Route 34, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155 or the Lutheran Church of the Atonement, 1 Center St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Elizabeth McGrath

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Elizabeth J. "Lib" McGrath, 81, of county Route 22, passed away on Saturday night, Sept. 15, 2001, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born on Feb. 7, 1920, in Richfield Springs, daughter of the late Reginald and Mary Llewellyn Joslyn.

A lifelong Richfield Springs resident, she was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School.

On May 21, 1940, she married John Seaton McGrath in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs. It was a loving and devoted union of 59 years until his passing on Nov. 30, 1999.

Mrs. McGrath worked along with her husband in their family business, the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home in Richfield Springs.

She had a strong love for the outdoors and nature. She had a special talent in gardening and cared for all the plants and shrubs that surrounded the funeral home.

She was a member and past president of the Richfield Springs Garden Club, a board member and past board president of the Richfield Springs Public Library and at one time was active in Girl Scouting in both Long Island and Richfield Springs.

She will always be remembered as a loving and caring person who will be missed by many, especially her family and friends.

Surviving are three sisters and their husbands, Mary and Edward Marzeski, Barbara and William Steckler, all of Richfield Springs, Ann and Ronald Gerrard of San Diego,  Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. John's Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs, where the Burial Office will be read from The Book of Common Prayer. The Rev. John Dixon Bartle, rector, will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Public Library Memorial Fund, the Richfield Springs Garden Club or the Susquehanna Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Envelopes will be available at the memorial service.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Seward Houghton

ONEONTA — Seward E. "Junior" Houghton Jr., 64, of Oneonta, passed away, comfortably, on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at his home with his family by his side.

He was born April 8, 1937, in Maryland, the son of Seward and Ethel Mae (Watson) Houghton.

He married Gail H. Mosher on Jan. 18, 1991, in Oneonta.

Junior was a truck driver for 42 years. He loved his work and always had his co-pilot, his dog, Cruise, by his side.

He was a member of the Sertoma Club.

He is survived by his wife, Gail H. Houghton, of Oneonta; a sister, Evelyn Strong of Oneonta; his son, David and his wife, Fawn, Houghton of Schenevus; stepson, Raymond and his wife, Jennifer, Palmeter of Oneonta; grandchildren, Brittany and Lynette Houghton; stepgrandchildren, Dakota and Jay Palmeter; nieces, Brenda and her husband, Michael, Davis of Milford and Betty and her husband, Robert, Krajcovic of Otego; nephew, Robert and his wife, Stephanie, Strong of Sidney Center; cousin, Josephine Finch of Binghamton; and many grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins and dear friends.

He was predeceased by his sister, Aileen Scutt; and a nephew, Tom Scutt.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Sept. 17, 2001, with family in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Mel Farmer officiating.

Burial will follow at the Schenevus Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Junior to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Marjorie A. Gutliph

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. — Marjorie A. Gutliph, 68, formerly of Walton, N.Y., and most recently of Zephyrhills, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001.

She was born Dec. 11, 1932, in Walton, the daughter of Woodrow and Helen (Baxter) Wagner.

Marjorie worked as a receptionist for the Rural Electric Association in Delhi, N.Y., for many years.

She was a former member of the Delhi American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She also enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Florida Tropical Lake Golf Club.

She is survived by her son, Edward  Jones of Colorado Springs,  Colo.; one brother, William "Bill" Wagner of Walton; a sister, Phyllis Gray of Zephyrhills, and formerly of Masonville, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Francis  Jones Jr.; also a sister, Madeline Cash.

A graveside memorial service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Hamden Cemetery, Hamden, N.Y., with the Rev. Bert More officiating.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Hernando-Pasco Hospice, 7066 Fort King Rd., Zephyrhills, Fla. 33541.

Arrangements are by Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home, Walton.
