Don Whipple, businessman with heart

When Don Whipple read a news story a few years ago about a mother and teen-aged daughter who were about to lose their home, he took action.

Mr. Whipple, of Lakeside Park, Ky., wrote a letter to The Post, offering to help. He did more than offer. He found an apartment for them, then enlisted friends to help pay for it for an extended period of time.

More importantly, he befriended the struggling mother and daughter. And he asked that his help not be made public. His family and friends say that such actions were typical of his warmth and generosity.

Mr. Whipple died Sunday after a brief fight with cancer. He was 61.

The native Pennsylvania n played football at the University of Cincinnati in the 1950s then went on to help found a highly successful lighting and graphics company, LSI Industries.

"He did so many things for people that others didn't know about," said his son, Tim Whipple, of Dayton, Ohio.

Mr. Whipple was a patron of the arts, UC and numerous charities. He was a dedicated member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Covington.

He also leaves his wife, Sharon; daughters, Betsy A. Whipple of Chicago, Ill., Leslie A. Whipple and Ashley Jones, both of Lakeside Park, Ky.; stepmother, Florence Whipple of Erie, Pa.; sister, Donna Mae Shepard of Erie; brother, Dennis C. Whipple of Erie; and two grandchildren.

Memorials service: 11 a.m. Sept. 13 at Trinity Episcopal. Arrangements: Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, Ky.

Memorials: Trinity Episcopal Church Building Fund and the Cincinnati Arts Association.

Philip Dempsey, conventions executive

Philip A. Dempsey, 72, retired executive vice president of the Cincinnati Convention and Visitors Bureau, died Saturday.

Mr. Dempsey, of Edgewood, Ky., was an employee of the Northern Kentucky Convention and Visitors Bureau, former president of the Cleveland Convention and Visitors Bureau and former director of sales and marketing with Paramount's Kings Island.

He leaves sons, Michael A. Dempsey of Edgewood, Patrick J. Dempsey of Park Hills, Ky., and James P. Dempsey of Cincinnati; daughters, Kerry A. Smith of Dry Ridge, Ky., and Kelly M. Elam of Camp Springs, Ky.; a sister, Patricia Fagan of Cleveland; and five grandchildren.

Mass: 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Agnes Church, Ft. Wright, Ky. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, Ky. Memorials: Philip A. Dempsey Scholarship Fund, Covington Catholic High School.

JOSEPH FEARS, 82, of Avondale, died Saturday. Mr. Fears was a retired pipefitter with the Cincinnati Concrete Pipe Co., which honored him for 35 years service before his retirement. He was a veteran of World War II, during which he served as a first cook for 200 men a day. Mr. Fears also was a lifelong member of Bethesda Baptist Church. Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday at Renfro Funeral Home, Avondale. Visitation: noon Wednesday at the funeral home.

Irene Dufour Cheever, 95, active in Vevay

Irene Dufour Cheever, 95, a longtime community leader in the Indiana community of Vevay, died Wednesday.

Mrs. Cheever, a descendent of one of Vevay's founding families, was as grand marshal of the Swiss Wine Festival Parade in 1993 and winner of the River Bell contest of Always a River in 1992. She was a curator of the Switzerland County Historical Museum and co-chairman of the Vevay Sesquicentennial in 1963.

Mrs. Cheever was a member of the Ruter Chapel United Methodist Church and was the oldest living Vevay High School cheerleader.

She was a member of the Active Chapter of Tri Kappa for 42 years and the associate chapter since 1995. She was a state officer in Tri Kappa, serving on the state scholarship and fine arts committees.

Mrs. Cheever was a clerk for several years for Byram Clover Farm Store and Deming's Five and Dime Store. She was a clerk of the Vevay rations office during World War II and for several years helped with the tobacco quota program in Vevay.

In her later years Mrs. Cheever worked as a teacher's aide at the Jeff-Craig Elementary School in Vevay.

She leaves daughters, Lucille Roberts of North Vernon, Ind., and Lois Rosenberger of Vevay; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. EDT Saturday at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, Vevay. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials: Ruter Chapel United Methodist Church building fund.
