Hilmar Krueger, educator

Hilmar Krueger was a highly regarded educator and administrator who founded the University of Cincinnati's two-year colleges, University College and Raymond Walters College.

"He was a very able educator. He created the two-year colleges and made certain that they had broad curriculums. They gave students a broad education," said Herb Curry, an associate professor emeritus of history at UC who knew Mr. Krueger as a student and as a professor under him.

Mr. Krueger died Wednesday in Mesa, Ariz., where he lived. He was 93.

"Mr. Krueger was a very able teacher. He was very concerned about students' well being and he was very available outside of the classroom. He was a superb administrator and ran the history department at UC for awhile," Curry said.

A native of Milwaukee, Wis., Mr. Krueger joined UC in 1940 and assumed the Taft Chair in medieval history. During the next 34 years, he served as a teacher, scholar, administrator and educational innovator.

In addition to founding the two two-year colleges, he also was responsible for establishing Clermont College and the College of Community Services. He facilitated the merger of the Ohio College of Applied Science with UC.

In 1970, he was appointed vice provost for university branches and community and technical programs. Mr. Krueger retired in 1974.

In 1996, UC awarded Mr. Krueger an honorary degree and in 1997 he was honored by University College at its first Founder's Day.

During his retirement in Arizona, Mr. Krueger continued his scholarly research as a internationally known medieval historian and was appointed an adjunct professor of history at the Arizona State University at Tempe.

Mr. Krueger received his undergraduate education at Northwestern College in Watertown, Wis. and his doctorate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

He leaves one son, Charles R. Krueger, and two grandchildren, all of State College, Pa., and one sister, Elda Eggert of Mesa, Ariz.
