Kornel Huvos, languages professor

Professor Emeritus Kornel Huvos, a professor emeritus of Romance Languages at the University of Cincinnati, died Monday of Parkinson's Disease. He was 85.

He had been raised in Hungary by a father who studied sculpting with renowned French artist Auguste Rodin, and he was the grandson of a counselor to the Court of Emperor Franz Joseph I.

Professor Huvos served in the Royal Horse Artillery Regiment in Budapest in 1931, later earned a Doctor of Laws degree from Royal University in Budapest and worked as a corporate counsel for Hungarian banks and corporations before World War II. He also wrote for an anti-Nazi newspaper in Budapest.

After the war, he worked as a press attache, translator and interpreter in the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During the Hungarian Revolution he was elected to the Revolutionary Committee of the Academy of Sciences. After the revolution's defeat, he and his family fled Hungary on foot to avoid arrest.

On Christmas Day, 1956, Professor Huvos was brought to the United States by the Cincinnati Times-Star newspaper to be a news analyst and features writer.

In 1961, he began teaching French at UC while working on his doctorate in French literature. He became a full professor in 1973, a Charles Phelps Taft Professor of Romance Languages in 1975 and head of his department from 1977 to '81. He retired in 1983.

EARL "JAKE" WHITEFORD, 77, of Aurora, Ind., died Tuesday. He was an employee of Aurora Casket Co. Services: 3 p.m. EDT Friday at Rullman Funeral Home, Aurora. Visitation: 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Robert Stout, started museum

Robert N. Stout was devoted to his family and the Ohio River transportation business.

"He was a man with the highest degree of integrity and honor, but most of all he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His family was the most important thing in his life and he will be dearly missed," said his daughter, Sharon McCarty of Loveland.

Mr. Stout was instrumental in starting the Cincinnati Fire Museum and served on its board. He also was a founding member of Good Shepherd Parish in Symmes Township.

Mr. Stout, 74, of Montgomery, died Tuesday at Christ Hospital.

He was a retired vice president and director of the Midland Enterprises, Ohio River Co. and Orgulf.

He interrupted his college education to serve with the U.S. Army infantry during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart after he was wounded in combat.

After the war, he graduated summa cum laude from New York University. In 1950 he married Dolores Zirpoli of Clifton, N.J., who survives him.

A native of Pocono Pines, Pa., Mr. Stout moved to Cincinnati in 1959 to join Midland Enterprises as its controller. In 1975, a towboat was named after him.

He retired in 1988. Mr. Stout was a treasurer of the Montgomery Fire Department, a former member of the Bankers Club, Queen City Club and Hyde Park Country Club. He was a long-time member of the Friday Nighters. He loved golf and was an enthusiastic fan of the Indianapolis 500.

He also was a president of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Financial Executives Institute, and a member of the Controllers of America, the Port of Cincinnati Propellor Club, the American Water ways Operators Association and the Water Transport Association.

In addition to his wife of 48 years and daughter, Mr. Stout leaves a son, Robert Stout Jr. of New Orleans; two other daughters, Donna Wanstrath of Hyde Park and Suzanne Bodkin of Deerfield Township; a sister, Betty Goerner of New Jersey; a brother, Donald Stout, also of New Jersey, and eight grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Good Shepherd Church on East Kemper Road in Symmes Township. Visitation 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Strawser Funeral Home in Blue Ash.

Norma Fisher, friend to young and old

Norma Fisher liked a good party.

"Mother was amazing in the number of friends she had, from all age groups. Many of her much younger friends . . . came from all over the country for her 90th birthday party," said her daughter, Libby Mott of Hyde Park. "Two years ago when we were all out for dinner she wanted to dance. She was a charming, very engaging woman who took delight in everyone she met."

Mrs. Fisher, 93, a homemaker, died Friday.

She also leaves a granddaugh ter and four great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Church in Hyde Park. Her nephew, the Rt. Rev. Monsignor Donald Fischer, will be the celebrant.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Geo. H. Rohde & Son Funeral Home, Mount Lookout.

Margaret Hall, published kids' books

Margaret Chandler Hall, who survived the sinking in 1956 of the Andrea Doria, died Tuesday at Good Samaritan Hospital of complications from diabetes.. She was 78.

Born in Cincinnati, she attended University School, Hillsdale School, Vassar College, the University of Cincinnati and commercial art school.

At one time she was a secretary for a legal firm, then worked for a major secretarial service. She was a devoted, lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church. For many decades she attended the Seventh Presbyterian Church in Walnut Hills and then transferred to the Madeira Presbyterian Church.

She survived the sinking of the Andrea Doria with her mother.

Ms. Hall collected old editions of well-known children's books. She published many children's stories and plays and illustrated some of them herself.

Survivors include two brothers, Joseph G. Hall of Grand Junction, Colo., and William B. Hall of Moscow, Idaho.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Madeira Presbyterian Church. Anderson Funeral Home in Finneytown is in charge of arrangements. Thomas "Red' Bartlett, Newport's Knothole legend

Generations of Northern Kentucky Knothole players and their parents knew Thomas A. Bartlett as the father of youth baseball in Campbell County.

For a half century, coaches and parents turned to "Red" Bartlett to organize each spring season. Mr. Bartlett considered the effort a labor of love because he loved children, his daughter Cathy Feinauer said.

Mr. Bartlett, 80, of Newport, died at 9:15 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospital North in Covington.

Mr. Bartlett was the recreation director in Newport in the 1970s and early 1980s. He also was a former tennis coach at Newport Central Catholic High School and played Santa Claus at community events for nearly 50 years.

Mr. Bartlett was a member of the James W. Costigan American Legion Post No. 11 in Newport, Lawler Hanlon VFW Post No. 5662 in Newport and Youth Incorporated and Boys Club.

Other survivors include his wife, Mildred Myers Bartlett, sons, Gregory Bartlett, who is a circuit court judge in Kenton County, and Thomas Bartlett of Cold Spring; a sister, Hazel Gramer of Bellevue; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Francis De Sales Church, Newport. Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Stanley Walling, owned tire firm

Stanley Walling operated his own truck tire businesses in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky for many years.

Mr. Walling brought to work the same spirit and strong character that he used to battle the many illnesses he suffered during his lifetime, said his wife, Janis.

Mr. Walling, 55, of Lakeside Park, Ky., died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was the owner of Walling Truck Tire Inc. in Cincinnati.

"He was a big man with a kind, gentle heart and a soft voice," his wife of 50 years said. "He has been ill, but he never complained. He never stopped working."

Other survivors include two daughters, Amanda Walling, at home, and Kimberly Walling of Independence; a son, Troy Walling of Walton; a brother, Ebb Walling of Fresno, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 8:15 p.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, Ky. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to charity.
