Ben Kelhoffer, 18, leader at LaSalle High
Ben Kelhoffer, an honor roll student and accomplished athlete at LaSalle High School, died Saturday after battling leukemia that was diagnosed nearly a year ago.
Despite his illness, Ben was able to graduate with his class.
Ben, 18, of Okeana, Ohio, became a rallying point for students at LaSalle and members of local parishes who pitched in to be typed as potential marrow donors and to raise $100,000 in support. The money went to pay the cost of the typing and toward the family's medical expenses.
"He was a positive role model for the students and was one of those kinds of kids who is a quiet leader," said Ken Barlag, director of development at LaSalle.
"He always had a smile on his face. He was a very positive individual, a person the kids could look up to and model after.
"A quiet leader would be the best thing to say about him. He was just a good solid student and athlete and is going to be missed."
Barlag said several donations already have arrived for a scholarship fund set up in Ben's name. The money will be used to help pay tuition for LaSalle students.
Ben, who ran track and played football, was practicing last October as a starting running back for the school's football team when his parents and coach noticed he seemed worn down. Medical tests uncovered the leukemia.
He was treated since summer in a Seattle hospital, undergoing a bone marrow transplant. He returned to Children's Hospital here recently, where he died.
Ben is survived by his mother, Barbara Kelhoffer, and father, Lawrence Kelhoffer; brothers, Larry and Bart, of Harrison; and a sister Beth, of Okeana.
