Louis Schmidt, made church woodwork
Louis G. Schmidt, an avid woodworker and custodian at two Roman Catholic parishes, died Sunday. He was 80.
A maintenance worker at St. Antoninus and Our Lady of Victory parishes, Mr. Schmidt continued doing odd jobs at both churches until he died. He also had worked at Riverview Nursing Home as maintenance supervisor.
But the Delhi man was perhaps best remembered for his wood-working creations, which include the main altar, tabernacle stand, lectern and baptismal font at St. Simon the Apostle Church in Delhi and a display case at The Rookwood Pottery in Mount Adams.
He made each of the pieces, as well as wood display signs for several businesses and the Delhi Historical Society, in a six-car garage behind the home he and his wife shared for 49 years.
"That's what sold him on the house: He liked the house but he loved the garage," said Mary "Toots" Schmidt, his wife.
After Mr. Schmidt completed the altar work at St. Simon, the priest there tried to pay him for the effort, but every time Mr. Schmidt would simply put the payment back into the collection basket.
Finally the priest bought him two bottles of wine, Mrs. Schmidt recalled, and said, "See if you can put those in the collection basket."
Mr. Schmidt served in the 107th Cavalry during World War II and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion Post 681.
In addition to his wife, he leaves a daughter, Mary Lou Crowley; and three sons, Ben, Joe and Jim Schmidt.
