Lewis shared joy of the natural world

John Rodgers Lewis was a science teacher whose love of the natural world often took him outside the classroom.

Mr. Lewis, a native and longtime resident of Adams County, died Wednesday at the hospice of Franciscan Hospital-Mount Airy Campus. He was 61.

Mr. Lewis taught biology, geology, zoology and botany at Manchester High School in Adams County for 24 years. He took early retirement in 1996.

"As a teacher, he was revered and is remembered - even to this day - by countless hundreds of his students," said fellow teacher Bertram Berman. "He was highly respected by his colleagues."

Beyond his academic accomplishments, Mr. Lewis was an artist, garden designer, hunter, botanical expert, fossil collector and aviarist.

He participated for many years in the National Audubon Society's annual Christmas bird count, having assumed as his assigned territory a broad stretch of the Ohio River lowlands on the Ohio side and a number of pool and pond locations on the Kentucky shore.

He was a sculptor and master wood-carver. He also was a founding member of the Numenius Society, a dedicated group of artists throughout Adams County who share a passion for wood- carving.

Mr. Lewis, together with his wife of 33 years, Judy, who survives, founded Lewis Mountain Herbs and Everlasting. In 1993, they initiated the Fall Herb Fair, which attracts thousands of visitors each October.

Mr. Lewis requested cremation, and, in lieu of a funeral, a memorial service was held in his gardens on Friday.

Other survivors include two sons, Tech Sgt. Doug Lewis of Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, and Mark Lewis of Adams County; his mother, Lena Lewis of Atlanta; two sisters, Joyce Lewis Williamson of Atlanta, and Kathryn Berman of Manchester, Ohio; and a brother, Bill Lewis of Winchester, Ohio.

A third son, Tim, preceded him in death.

William B. Minges, ran Minges Candy

William B. Minges devoted 75 years of his life to the family business, Minges Candy, and helped it become a leading candy wholesaler in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.

Mr. Minges died Wednesday at the age of 87.

"Although Dad's main focus in life was his business, he was also a quiet man with a deep love of those around him," said his daughter, Pat McMullen.

At age 12, Mr. Minges began working after school and on weekends for his father, Peter, who founded the wholesale candy distribution business in 1905.

With the onset of the Depression in 1929, Mr. Minges joined his father full time, and together they extended the reach of their business from Cincinnati to the confectionary needs of retailers and others throughout Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.

In the decades following World War II, when the distribution of wholesale candy merged with the distribution of tobacco, Mr. Minges chose not to carry tobacco.

He changed the focus of the business to include numerous specialty bulk candies in addition to standard candy bars and gums.

He stayed active with the business into late August. Mr. Minges was preceded in death by his wife, Mable H. "Billie" Minges, and a daughter, Mary Jo Bilitch.

Other survivors include a son, Peter W. Minges; a sister, Mary C. Daughters, both of Cincinnati; and 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Monday at Covenant First Presbyterian Church, 717 Elm St., downtown Cincinnati. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Neidhard Minges Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church; City Gospel Mission, 1419 Elm St., 45202; or to a charity of the donor's choice. Minges Candy, 138 W. Court St., downtown, will close Monday.
