Ludwig W. Schulter, master brewer
In his youth, Ludwig W. Schulter worked in the breweries around Allentown, Pa., and that eventually led to his chosen career as a master brewer in Cincinnati.
Mr. Schulter, 87, died Wednesday at Mercy Franciscan Hospital-Western Hills.
"He worked in a brewery when Allentown had multiple breweries around like Cincinnati did at the time," said Schulter's son, William Schulter.
To realize his lifelong passion of being a master brewer, Schulter spent two years in college studying chemistry and then attended the Brewers Academy in New York, N.Y., where he received his Master Brewer certification.
In 1944 he started as an assistant brew master at the Burger Brewing Co. in the West End and continued with the company until it closed its doors in 1973.
Schulter was a member of the Master Brewers Association of America and the chairman of the organization's convention when it was held in Cincinnati.
He also was a member of the St. Francis Society of Allentown, Pa., an usher for St. Teresa of Avila Church and a member of the St. Joseph Men's Society at St. Teresa of Avila.
"He was a very fun-loving person," Schulter said. "He was a family man. He wanted all of us kids home for holidays and so forth."
Survivors include his wife, Mildred; another son, James; a daughter, Mary Frances Acito; a sister, Mary Allen, and six grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Teresa of Avila Church, Price Hill. Visitation: 8:30 to 10 a.m. Monday at the Harry Meyer & Geiser Funeral Home, 4989 Glenway Ave.

DR. C. EUGENE BENNETT, 72, first executive director of Miami University's Middletown branch, died Thursday in Durham, N.C. Mr. Bennett served as executive director for 21 years, from 1965 until his retirement in 1986.

CG&E's Robert L. Shreve, sang all his life
Robert L. Shreve carried his love for singing to many Cincinnati venues and his fine tenor voice became well-known to music lovers here.
Mr. Shreve, of Hyde Park, died Friday at age 88. He had been a resident at the Marjorie P. Lee Retirement Community.
Mr. Shreve's passion for singing began at Withrow High School, where he had been a member of the chorus. He graduated in 1929 and entered the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. When the stock market crashed that same year, he left music school for work but still enrolled in night classes at University of Cincinnati and joined the university Glee Club.
In 1932, he began working for the Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co. as a supervisor and remained there for 45 years. During those years, he continued his musical hobby.
He sang with the chorus when the Metropolitan Opera toured in Cincinnati. He also sang with the May Festival Chorus, the Scottish Rite Cathedral House Choir and the Isaac M. Wise Temple Choir.
In retirement, Mr. Shreve joined the Sutton Singers, a group of retired crooners. He became their soloist.
Survivors are a daughter, Margaret L. Shreve, of Cincinnati; a son, Robert L., of Mason, Ohio; and four grandchildren.

Crestview's Leon Pearson, played Santa
Leon V. Pearson brought a little bit of Christmas to generations of children.
For 35 years, Mr. Pearson played Santa Claus at the Edgewood, Ky., tree-lighting ceremony, churches, at riverside homeless camps and anywhere else he could create Christmas magic.
In 1998, he told a Post reporter, "I do it because I love it. I never have visited anywhere for money. If people give me anything, I donate it to my church."
Mr. Pearson, 75, of Crestview, Ky., died Saturday. He was a retired property manager with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Cincinnati, and a member of First Baptist Church of Fort Thomas. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of the Kentucky Native Plant Society.
Survivors include daughters, Carolyn S. Grothaus of Greenville, S.C., and Melissa A. Kirby of Wilmore; a son, Nick Pearson of Taylor Mill; and five grandchildren.

Dr. Jonathan VanDermark, pediatrician
Everywhere Dr. Jonathan Gay VanDermark went, someone recognized him.
He was one of the first pediatricians in Northern Kentucky and served patients for 50 years.
"There were generations - mothers whose children's children were his patients," said his son, Jack VanDermark of New Bern, N.C.
Dr. VanDermark, 95, of Fort Wright, Ky., died Monday at Highland Crossing in Fort Wright. He began his career making house calls. By the time he retired at 81, he had treated more than 6,000 patients.
He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Kentucky Medical Society, and the Kentucky and National pediatrics associations. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Covington and was active with the Cincinnati Babies Milk Fund and the Covington Optimist Club.
Other survivors include his wife, Margaret Jane VanDermark; son, Thomas VanDermark of Somerset, Ky.; a sister, Mary Francis Lewis of Cincinnati; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
