Rev. Germain Krizmanich, ran soup kitchen

Whether he was serving his country or parishioners in Over-the-Rhine, the Rev. Germain Krizmanich inspired others to improve their lives.

Rev. Krizmanich devoted 22 years to three parishes including St. Francis Seraph Church in Cincinnati, where he opened a soup kitchen for the poor that still bears his name over the door. The longtime pastor of St. Francis Seraph Church in Over-The-Rhine died Friday. He was 76.

Born Carl Louis Krizmanich in South Bend, Ind., he served in the Air Force during World War II as a tailgunner with the 530th Bomber Squadron. His bravery earned him the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with seven bronze stars as well as the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters.

After his discharge from the military, he entered the Franciscan Order and was admitted to the novitiate at St. Anthony Shrine in Mt. Airy in 1947.

Rev. Krizmanich served as priest to parishes in  Louisiana, Michigan and Ohio, where he was pastor of St. Francis Seraph Church from 1981 to 1994.

In 1962, he helped bring the Cursillo movement to Cincinnati. The Spanish-based, spirit revival movement offered a weekend short course of Christianity, bringing together lay people and priests in prayer and study.

"He was very concerned about St. Francis and the people there. He gave people an opportunity to take on a new way of life," said lifelong friend the Rev Al Hudepohl of Mercy Community, Winton Woods.

Rev. Krizmanich is survived by four brothers, Fred, Herman, Steve, John; and by his sister, Elizabeth Gartee. Services: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Seraph Church in Over-the-Rhine. A burial mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Cemetery in St. Bernard. Visitation: 5-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
