Dr. Joseph Olasov, advocate for mentally ill

Dr. Joseph Olasov, who put his career on the line to protect the indigent mentally ill, died Friday at his home in Montgomery. He was 60.

"He was one of the few professionals in the mental health field in our area willing to stand up and put his career on the line to protect people who are mentally ill," said Ed Ritchy, coordinator for the Homeless Coalition of Greater Cincinnati.

"He was a really kind, caring and generous person," said his wife, Dr. Linda Olasov. "He would take a risk for what he believed was right even when there was personal danger."

A clinical psychologist in Cincinnati for more than 20 years, Dr. Olasov worked at the former Rollman Psychiatric Institute and Roselawn's Pauline Warfield Lewis Center.

He worked hard for the homeless mentally ill, Ritchy said, and tried to save the Rollman Institute and improve conditions at the Lewis Center despite official opposition.

"He spoke out at a lot of public hearings ....," Ritchy said. "He was out there protesting with us, at the risk of his job and career."

Ritchy said that although Rollman's remained closed, the protests slowed and ultimately halted state efforts to close still more mental hospitals, whose homeless patients often ended up on the streets.

"There aren't too many advocates for mental health. He ... is really going to be missed," Ritchy said.

Dr. Olasov's other interests included gardening and music, and he was an accomplished recorder and harpsichord player.

Other surivors include two daughters, Marti Bedard and Jean Olasov, both of Fairview Heights; a brother, David Olasov of New York City; and a sister, Eve Olasov of Charleston, S.C.

Services were Monday at the Weil Funeral Home, 3901 Reading Road, Avondale.

Memorials may be made to the Cincinnati Botanical Society at the Cincinnati Zoo or the Jewish National Fund-Plant a Tree in Israel, 78 Randall Avenue, Rockville Centre, New York, N.Y. 11570.
