Sister Amelia Bobbert, "flexible, adaptive'

Sister Amelia Marie Bobbert, 97, a Franciscan Sister of the Poor for 74 years, died Friday.

Her service included 18 years as a recluse, living a life of contemplation and prayer, until the Hartwell-based convent ended its reclusive program in 1971.

"She pretty much led a life of silence during that era, speaking only at recreation time," said Sister Arleen Bourquin. "She was a very committed person. She was very convinced of her religious vocation."

A native of Germany, Sister Amelia studied clothing design before entering the convent in Aachen, Germany, in 1927.

She came to the United States in 1929, became a citizen, and served in several ministries.

In 1941 she was assigned to the Aspirancy, a high school for girls considering the religious life.

"She was a major influence in the development of the faith life of her students," said Sister Arleen.

After spending 1953 to 1971 as a recluse, Sister Amelia helped develop the House of Spirituality, another contemplative lifestyle, but not as strict or rigid as a reclusive life.

Sister Amelia also served residents of Mercy Franciscan Terrace as a pastoral care associate for 14 years.

"She spent many hours listening, consoling and praying with the people she served," said Sister Arleen. "She was a flexible, adaptive person. She was very friendly. She was just a wonderful person."

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today in the Chapel of St. Clare Convent, 60 Compton Road, Hartwell. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

Ray Scott, WNOP disc jockey for 50 years

While growing up in Pendleton County, Ky., Ray Scott and his brothers would sit entranced watching their father strum his banjo.

Those sessions engrained in young Ray's mind a love and appreciation for music that lasted an entire lifetime, including 50 years working as a disc jockey at WNOP, a jazz radio station in Newport.

"Music was both his hobby and his job," said Jean Scott, his wife. "He always felt very fortunate that he made a living . . . as a radio announcer."

Ray L. Scott, 84, of Highland Heights, Ky., died Tuesday at Florence Park Care Center in Florence. He was a member of Gumlick Baptist Church in Pendleton County.

Mr. Scott's musical career began when he and a brother started an act in their teens. His wife says the event was short-lived, as Mr. Scott was soon called to serve in the Air Force in World War II.

Mr. Scott returned to Northern Kentucky and was hired by WNOP, at the time a country station. Mr. Scott seamlessly made the transition from country to jazz when the station changed formats a few years later.

"He loved all kinds of music," said Mrs. Scott. "Not too many people could make that change, but as long as music was involved, he was happy to do it."

Mr. Scott's work sometimes coincided with his other love - travel. A particularly enjoyable assignment took Mr. Scott to the West Coast, where he reported on the jazz festival circuit in California.

Even with the hectic schedule, Mrs. Scott said her husband spent a majority of his time with the family, each year taking them on a vacation.

Other survivors include a son, William L. Scott of Cheviot; brothers, William Scott of San Diego, Walter Scott of Groesbeck, and Glenn Scott of Indianapolis; and one grandchild.

Services will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Allison & Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church, 14 West 5th St., Covington, Ky. 41011.
