Geneva Butts, president of guild
Geneva Butts circulated petitions, buttonholed legislators and campaigned through the media during the late 1990s in her quest to get group homes for retarded adults in Northern Kentucky.
When that effort finally bore fruit and the first group home opened in Northern Kentucky, she passed on an opportunity to get her own daughter -- Mary Ann, who has Down Syndrome -- a slot there, saying it should be given to someone who needed it more.
It was vintage Geneva Butts.
"She was real involved with her seven children, but to get involved with us she had to get involved in the community," said daughter Pamela S. Tullis of Fort Thomas.
When Mrs. Butts lived in Las Vegas in the 1960s, she started the St. Robert Bellarmine Guild -- equivalent to the PTA -- at the school her children attended. She headed it for about five years as president, and by the time she stepped down, it had about 250 member families.
"She was really dedicated to us, she gave up her whole life for her kids," said Tullis. "She took care of my sister all these years, and she never complained about it."
Mrs. Butts, of Covington, died Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was 74.
Her daughter Mary Ann finally went to live in one of the group homes in June when her mother became too ill to care for her.
Mrs. Butts was a retired switchboard operator with CSX Railroad.
Surviving in addition to her two daughters are her husband, Robert P. Butts Sr.; sons, Robert P. Butts Jr. of Erlanger, Ky., William Butts and Raymond G. Butts, both of Newport, and Joseph E. Butts of Alexandria, Ky.; another daughter, Phyllis L. Nelson of Mason, Ohio; a brother, Winfred Green of Highland Heights; a sister, Joyce Gangloff of Melbourne; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Therese Church, Southgate. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport.

Lloyd 'Rudy' Wells, civic-minded
Lloyd Allan "Rudy" Wells was a civic-minded man in a community that no longer exists.
Mr. Wells, who died Thursday at his home in Taylor Mill, Ky., was a founding member and assistant fire chief for the Winston Park Volunteer Fire Department. He was 80.
He helped mix the mortar and lay the block for the fire station on Winston Avenue, which is now part of Taylor Mill, said his son, Richard A. Wells of Latonia.
Something the Winston Park City Council did made Mr. Wells so angry that he decided to run for the council and change it -- and he did, said his son.
Mr. Wells served on the council and also on the Taylor Mill City Council, after Winston Park became part of Taylor Mill in the early 1970s.
When he wasn't working as a conductor/switchman for ConRail, where he retired after 43 years, he was involved with children, as an assistant scoutmaster or a Little League baseball coach, his son said.
He had a special pair of pliers that he used to pull out loose teeth for neighborhood children, his son said.
He also enjoyed owning and racing horses. His best horse, named Boiling Over, did better the colder the weather.
Mr. Wells was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II.
Other survivors include his wife, Betty Marie Mattson Wells; a daughter, Penny Hayes of Dayton, Ky.; sons, Robert L. Wells of Aurora, Ind., and D. Michael Wells of Taylor Mill; a sister, Bonnie Aker of Melbourne, Fla.; a brother, John R. Wells of Taylor Mill; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014..
