Irene Elizabeth Lackey

Shawnee resident Irene Elizabeth Lackey died Saturday in an Oklahoma City hospital. She was 81.

Mrs. Lackey was born April 1, 1919, to E.W. and Sally (Boren) Hart in Fort Smith, Ark.

She lived in Holdenville before moving to Shawnee in 1936.

She married Robert L. Lackey on Jan. 22, 1939.

Mrs. Lackey was a member of First Baptist Church for 64 years, and taught Sunday school for 32 years.

She was a member of OES, Murrow Chapter No. 464, and had retired from Tinker Air Force Base in 1981.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Lackey; a son, William Lee Lackey; parents, E.W. and Sally Hart; and two brothers, Jack and Eddie Hart.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Robert Michael and Kay Lackey, Oklahoma City; daughter-in-law, Barbara Lackey, Raleigh, N.C.; sister, Cleon Bailey, Tulsa; two sisters-in-law, Alma Hart, Van Buren, Ark., and Betty Slentz, Downey, Calif.; a granddaughter and spouse, Lea and Steve Penna; a grandson, Billie Lackey, California; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends, including Max and Francis David and Mac McBride.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church in Shawnee, with the Rev. J.C. Farrand of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, under the direction of Vondel L. Smith and Son Mortuary, Oklahoma City.

Ivory G. Watson

Ivory G. Watson, Shawnee, died Saturday in a local nursing home. He was 71.

Watson was born Aug. 1, 1928, in Shawnee, the son of Bert and Ella Watson.

He attended schools at Center Point and Bethel.

He married Violet Holcombe on Aug. 1, 1948, in Tecumseh.

Watson was a member of Laborers International Union and attended Twin Lakes Nazarene Church.

He lived in Shawnee most of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Ella Watson; three brothers, Raymond, Wayne and Frank Watson; and four sisters, Dovie Johnson, Ruth Williams, Oma Arms and Gertie Brunkest.

Survivors include his wife Violet Watson of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Della and Floyd Styers Jr., Shawnee, and Dawna and Charlie Hamm Jr., Shawnee; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Harold and Dean Watson, Tecumseh, and Jack Watson, Wetumka; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Addie and Doyle Smith, Shawnee, and Kozelhua and Hebern Young, Tecumseh; three granddaughters and their spouses, Heather and Preston Skinner, Okinawa, Japan, Amber and Shaun Whiteside, Okinawa, Japan, and Fransis Gene Styers, Shawnee; and a grandson, Chad Hamm, Shawnee.

Memorials may be made to a hospice.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel in Shawnee with the Rev. Harold Blankenship and the Rev. John Stephens officiating. Burial will be in Dale Cemetery.

Joyce Rayfield

Joyce Rayfield of Oklahoma City died Monday at and Oklahoma City hospital. She was 51.

Services are pending and will be announced by Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Leo Reynolds

Leo "Speck" Reynolds died Monday at his home in Norman. He was 81.

He was born on Sept. 26, 1918, to Fred and Lenore Reynolds. He graduated from St. Benedict High School in Shawnee.

He received a bachelor of arts degree in journalism and a master of arts degree in Human Relations from the University of Oklahoma. He was married to the former Nadean McMorrow on May 29, 1948.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, and served in Japan in Occupational Forces. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Reynolds was active in the early civil rights movement. He started the St. Vincent DePaul at St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

He was a news editor at several papers around the country and taught news writing at the University of Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by his three brothers, Dr. P.J. Reynolds, Lawrence Reynolds and Charles Reynolds; one sister, Maude Reynolds of Oklahoma City; and his parents, Fred and Lenore Reynolds.

Survivors include his wife Nadean of the home; nine children and their spouses, Kathy Bass of Norman, Steve and Marsha Reynolds of Laverne, Calif., Mark Reynolds of Fayetteville, Ark., Matthew and Susan Reynolds of Truth or Consequences, N.M., Paulette Reynolds of Claremore, Chris and Linda Reynolds of Stillwater, Phillip and Gloria Reynolds of Tucson, Ariz., Beverly and Bertie Chawla of Anaheim, Calif., and Ami Reynolds of Claremore.

There will be a vigil at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mayes Chapel. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Burial services will be at noon at Calvary Cemetery in Shawnee under the direction of Mayes Funeral Directors.

Leon Atchley

Wanette resident Leon Atchley died Sunday in Norman. He was 88.

Atchley was born Nov. 30, 1911, in Wanette to William and Martha Atchley.

He graduated from Wanette High School, and worked as a nurse's aide at Norman State Hospital. Later, he was a farmer.

He married Zelma Davenport on Oct. 6, 1933, in Shawnee.

Atchley was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church, and lived in Wanette most of his life.

He was preceded in death by his grandson; parents, William and Martha Atchley; two brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors include his wife Zelma Atchley of the home; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Mary and Allen Van Schuyver, Wanette, Leonda and Wilford Scott, Wanette, and Lois Gray, Lexington; three grandchildren, Debbie O'Neal, Asher, Jeff Scott, Lexington, and Cindy Tebbitts, Norman; three great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. today at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Archie Beller officiating. Burial will be in Wanette Cemetery under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel, Shawnee.

Raymond Charles Sherman

Raymond "Ray" Charles Sherman died Sunday, July 16, in Okemah. He was 76.

He was born Aug. 17, 1923, in Enid to Charlie and Leona Pearl Sherman. He graduated from Coyle High School in Payne County.

He was a staff sergeant in Company G of the 180th Infantry and received the World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, EAME Theater ribbon, two bronze Service Stars, Purple Heart and one bronze oak leaf cluster.

Sherman also served as a military police officer in Oklahoma City. After the war he returned to farming.

He worked as a campus police officer for Oklahoma State University and later was a deputy for Payne County and worked his way up from jailer to under sheriff.

He also was active in jail ministry and was licensed to preach on Dec. 10, 1969, by Diamond Valley Community Church, east of Stillwater.

In 1975, Sherman left the pastorate to pursue ranching in Coal County at Burr Valley Ranch. He and his wife, Cloris Trompler Davis, joined the Olney Baptist Church, which he later pastored.

In 1980, he moved to Okfuskee County near Childsville and joined the First Baptist Church, where he was ordained and served as a deacon from 1984 to 1996.

He was the originator of the "Friend's Fund" and began a singles ministry at First Baptist Church.

Sherman began his weekly jail ministry in the Okfuskee County Jail in 1980. He was a member of Prison Fellowship and also took part in prison services at Joe Harp Prison. He held weekly nursing home services at the Pioneer Nursing Home. In 1996, he joined Handicappers Outreach for Christ and added weekly services at Colonial Park Nursing, Okemah, Weleetka Care Center and Rainbow Terrace Nursing Home, both in Weleetka. He was active in organizing the North Canadian Baptist Association Mexico mission trips.

He also was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Okemah, and Pharaoh Baptist Church. He pastored What Would Jesus Do Church in Okemah from Feb. 8, 1997, until June 2000.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his three brothers: Alvin Floyd, Orval Ralph and James Harry "Jimmy" Sherman.

Survivors include his wife Cloris Trompler Davis, Perkins; adopted daughter, Sandra Lynn Shannon Patton, Okemah, and her two daughters, Sarah Aspen and Mary RuthAnna Patton, both of Choctaw; two uncles and three aunts, Lester and John Whitmore, Lilly Whitmore Fox and Bertha Whitmore Harshman, all of Payne county, and Merida Sherrman McIntire, Los Angeles, Calif.; and many other nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Wake services were held Sunday and Monday at What Would Jesus Do Church in Okemah. Burial was at Marena Cemetery, near Coyle, Okla., with Pastor Gabriel Gomez and Ralph Hennyhaw of Nuyaka Indian Baptist Church officiating.

Ethel Larena Anderson Hamilton

Ethel Larena Anderson Hamilton of Shawnee died Monday at a local nursing home. She was 95.

She was born Jan. 17, 1905, in Macomb. She was the daughter of WM Oscar and Maude (Thurmond) Anderson.

She attended school at Solomon's Temple. She married Cletus A. Hamilton in 1927 in Oklahoma City.

She was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church, Order of Eastern Star Murrow Chapter No. 464, and a 50-year member of the Rock Island Club.

She moved from Macomb to Shawnee in 1927.

She was a nurse for Dr. B.F. Hamilton, father of Cletus A. Hamilton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1954; four sisters, one brother and one grandson.

Survivors include daughter, Luella Land, Lakewood, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law, Robert A. and Judith Hamilton, Plano, Texas; three grandchildren, David E. and Patricia Land, Lakewood, Calif.; Michael R. Hamilton, Columbus, Ohio; Amy and Jason Intres, Columbus, Ohio.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Fairview Cemetery with the Rev. Harry Smith, assisted by a nephew, William Roy Anderson, officiating. Services are under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel.
