Bert I. Cherry

The Rev. Bert I. Cherry, 97, Shawnee, died Saturday at a local nursing home..

He was born March 11, 1904, in Indian Territory near Wewoka, to Isaac S. and Margaret E. (Almon) Cherry.

He attended high school in Earlsboro and moved to Shawnee to attend Oklahoma Baptist University. He graduated from OBU in 1928 and from Southwestern Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1931.

Rev. Cherry surrendered to preach at age 16. He first served as pastor at Rock Creek Baptist Church in 1924, then resigned to preach summer revivals. After returning to OBU, he served as supply intern at a church in Summer, Okla., for several months.

While in seminary, he served as pastor at Maysville, Okla., and after seminary, he was pastor at a church in Lindsay for three-and-a-half years. He then preached at a church in Bristow before resigning again to preach revivals. He then accepted a job in Cleveland, Okla., as pastor and stayed until 1941, when he entered the Army as chaplain. He left the Army in 1946 as a major, and from 1946-1953 he was a pastor in Madill.

He served as pastor of a church in Carbondale, Ill., for 13 years, and retired in 1965. After retirement, he returned to become a member of Rock Creek Baptist Church, and has served as interim pastor for more than 30 churches.

Cherry married Vigie Boatman on June 5, 1930, in Dallas. She preceded him in death.

In 1971, he married Louise David, who died in 1992.

He served on the OBU Board, the Home Missions Board and the Illinois State Baptist Mission Board.

Also preceding him in death were his parents; one great-grandson, Bryan Cherry; six sisters, Iva Wolsey, Rose Shepard, Violet Bristow, Euna Wilson, Mattie Logsdan and Soffie Shepard; and five brothers, Lee Cherry, Ray Cherry, Evan Cherry, Sid Cherry and Joe Cherry.

Surviving relatives include three children and spouses, Bert B. and Darlene Cherry, Dallas; Bill R. and Patrice Cherry, Las Vegas, Nev.; and Dena Lee and Dale Rowley, Vandalia, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Rock Creek Baptist Church with Dr. Reed Lynn officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park. Gaskill-Owens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Rock Creek Baptist Church, OBU, International Missions or North American Missions.

George A. Hoover

Shawnee resident George A. Hoover, 91, died Saturday at a local nursing home.

He was born Sept. 10, 1909, in Henry, Ill., the youngest son of S.B. and Rhoda Hoover. He attended schools in Decator, Ill., Earlsboro, Shawnee and Higgins, Texas.

Hoover worked at Harold's Men's Wear, was a home builder, then retired as a real estate broker.

On June 15, 1929, he married Louise Boucherie in Tecumseh at the home of her aunt and uncle, Burette and Lillian Boucherie.

Hoover and his wife lived more than 50 years in the home he designed and built.

His parents, brothers and sisters preceded him in death.

Surviving relatives include a son and daughter-in-law, G. Norman and Lucilla Hoover of Houston; three grandchildren, Shelly, Gregory and Jon; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Tecumseh Cemetery with Bill Matthews and Phil Thompson officiating. Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Marybyrd Villines

Marybyrd Villines of Shawnee died Thursday at a local nursing home. She was 90.

She was born Oct. 30, 1910, in Broken Arrow to Samuel and Sarah Jane (Dean) Webster. She graduated from Brownsville (Texas) High School.

She was the first official secretary for the superintendent of schools in Brownsville. She also was secretary to the president of Brownsville College and worked for MidContinent and Standard Oil, Coates Oil and Acid Engineers.

She married E.S. "Jack" Villines on May 3, 1941, in Dallas, Texas. He preceded her in death on May 29, 1985.

She was a 50-year member and past matron of the Lakin Chapter No. 244 of the Order of the Eastern Star; Red Cross Gray Lady; leader of Girl Scout troupe White Fairy; secretary of the Federated Women's Club, Liberal, Kan.; secretary of Civil Air Patrol, Liberal, Kan.; member of the Golf Club, Liberal, Kan.; and founder of the 11-1 Bridge Club, Liberal, Kan.

She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Sara Maree Schawo, on Aug. 25, 1992; and two sisters and one brother.

Surviving relatives include two grandsons, Jack Robin Schawo, Shawnee, and Derrick Keith Schawo, Tacoma, Wash.; one granddaughter, Nicole L. Schawo Denny, Shawnee; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with Father Percy Jerkins officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Purcell. Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Jessie Deere

Shawnee resident Jessie Deere died Wednesday at a local hospital. He was 80.

Deere was born Jan. 19, 1919, to Robert and Nicey Deere in Seminole. He attended Lone Star School near Seminole.

He married Minnie Thompson, who preceded him in death. He married Levesta Lewis March 30, 1973, in McAlester.

Deere was employed at Shawnee Milling Co. and lived in Shawnee since he was 19 years old. He was a member of the Seminole Indian Nation and Liberty Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Levesta Deere of the home; daughters, Jessica Deere of the home, Nellie Straight and Molly Deere, both of Norman, and Judy Deere, Los Angeles, Calif.; son, Michael Deere, Oklahoma City; brothers, Jackson Deer, Tulsa, and Buster Deer, Seminole; granddaughter, Lauren Deere of the home; 13 other grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, James Deere, and grandson, Tony Straight.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Liberty Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Matthews officiating and the Rev. Phil Thompson and the Rev. Larry Goins assisting. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Samuel D. Bailey

Harrah resident Samuel D. Bailey died Wednesday at his home. He was 71.

Bailey was born May 19, 1927, in Dayton, Iowa, to David S. and Lillian Mae (Dutcher) Bailey.

He married Audrey Louise Aldridge Sept. 18, 1949, in Ruthven, Iowa. She preceded him in death July 27, 1994.

Bailey worked as a carpenter, as a maintenance engineer for St. Louis Schools and served in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his daughter, Rochelle Wagoner, Guthrie; son, Mike Bailey; brothers, Darrell Bailey, Missouri, Larry Bailey, South Dakota, and Gerald Bailey, Washington; sisters, Rosie Shipman, Washington, and Dolores Kinkaid, Illinois; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by Mark Bailey, Steven Bailey, Charlene Donahe, Sally Sigler and David E. Bailey.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Harrah United Methodist Church. Cremains will be buried at a later date.

Lloyd Joseph Yocum

Stroud resident Lloyd Joseph Yocum died Wednesday in Oklahoma City. He was 83.

Yocum was born June 7, 1915, in Blue Eye, Mo., to Charley W. and Minnie Pearl (Jackson) Yocum.

He married Ruth Burgan Oct. 22, 1986, in Bullhead, Ariz.

Yocum was a resident of Stroud for the last 25 years. Before that he lived in California, where he worked as a dairy farmer. He was a member of the United Pentecostal Church in Stroud.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Yocum, Stroud; sons and daughter-in-law, Jack Lloyd and Lynda Yocum, Willow Valley, Ariz., and Johnny and Ronnie Hyde, both of Stroud; daughters and son-in-law, Loretta K. and Don Malone, Oakdale, Calif., Kathy Harris, Sapulpa, Debbie Kilgore, Lima, Ohio, and Judy Hyde, Stroud; brothers, Finis Marvin Yocum, Mustang, and Leslie E. Yocum, Milfay; 19 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and three sisters.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. today at the Magnolia Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Bristow with the Rev. Cecil Gormon officiating under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Stroud.

Richmond Guess

Sasakwa resident Richmond Guess died Tuesday. He was 66.

Guess was born Sept. 4, 1932.

Survivors include his wife, Georgetta Guess.

Services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Macedonia Baptist Church in Wewoka. Burial will be at Westwood Cemetery in Wewoka.

Bonnie B. McNamara

Shawnee resident Bonnie B. McNamara died Saturday in a local hospital. She was 87.

Mrs. McNamara was born Sept. 7, 1912, in Britton, to James and Violet (Easter) Bivins.

She graduated from Putnam City High School in 1930, and later attended Burns Commercial College in Oklahoma City.

She worked as a waitress for many years, and co-owned several food service businesses.

She married John Emery McNamara.

Mrs. McNamara was a member of the May Avenue Methodist Church in Oklahoma City for more than 30 years. She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Shawnee.

She had lived in Shawnee since 1987.

She was preceded in death by her husband; John McNamara; her parents, James and Violet Bivins; and her sister, Tola Finney.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Thelma McNamara, Shawnee; three sisters, Oletha Nix, Bernice Cummings, and Jean Fruit; and a sister-in-law, Winifred Bowlan, Bethany.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. today, at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Oklahoma City with the Rev. Robert Milsap officiating.

Services are under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel, Shawnee.

Wilbur Garlow Patterson

Wilbur Garlow "Pat" Patterson, Shawnee, died Sunday at his home. He was 83.

Patterson was born Dec. 26, 1916, in Waco, Texas, the son of Randall Morton and Clara Mabel (Garlow) Patterson.

He graduated from Shawnee High School in 1934. He graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1939, and attended Southwest Baptist Theology Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas in 1948.

He married Edith Viola Eye on Sept. 10, 1938. She preceded him in death on Feb. 4, 1976.

He later married Frances (Hopkins) Hodges on Nov. 18, 1977, in Shawnee.

Patterson was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, a charter member of Trinity Baptist Church, and was active at Putnam City Baptist Church.

He was a Gideon member.

He previously lived in McLoud and later in Oklahoma City before moving to Shawnee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Randall and Clara Patterson; three brothers; and a sister.

Survivors include his wife, Frances "Fran" Patterson of the home; a son, Eddie Patterson, Highlands, N.C.; daughter, Carolyn Patterson, Newalla; three stepchildren, Shauna Brown, Midland, Texas; Dana Bays, Shawnee; Nathan Hodges, Shawnee; 11 grandchildren, Drew, Brian and Terry Patterson, Angela Sutterfield, Mark Patterson, Heather and Joshua Brown, Miranda and Claire Bays, and Cameron and Lydia Hodges; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jeff Moore and the Rev. Mark Patterson officiating.

Burial will be in Tecumseh Cemetery, under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel, Shawnee.
