Hazel B. Steed

Former Shawnee resident Hazel B. Steed of Austin, Texas, died Tuesday at a Texas nursing home. She was 94.

She was born Oct. 9, 1905, in Ada to Robert Houston and Dora Luella (Manley) Bennett. She attended Ada schools and married Tom Steed Feb. 26, 1923, in Ada.

She was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and was involved in the Daughters of the American Revolution.

A former resident of Oklahoma City, Bartlesville, McAlester and Norman, she had lived in Shawnee since 1927, but moved to Austin, Texas, in April 1999.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Tom Steed, in June, 1983; and one son, Roger Steed in 1947.

Surviving are a son, Richard Steed of Austin, Texas; three grandchildren, Roger Steed of Birmingham, Mich., Marguerite Hoffman of Dallas, Texas; and Katherine VanderWoude of Evergreen, Colo.; six great-grandchildren; and niece, Donna Rae Birdsong of Baxter Springs, Kan.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with the Rev. Janie Kirt Morris officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

The family will greet friends in the Parish Hall of Emmanuel Episcopal Church 9 a.m. Saturday before the services.

Memorials may be given to the Endowment Fund of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 548, Shawnee, Okla., 74801.

Kenneth E. Guffey Jr.

Norman resident Kenneth E. Guffey Jr. died Tuesday in a Norman hospital. He was 40.

Guffey was born on Dec. 24, 1959, in Tainan, Taiwan, the son of Kenneth E. Sr. and Faye Guffey.

He graduated from Shawnee High School in 1978, and worked at General Motors.

He married Marie Martin on Sept. 22, 1979. Guffey was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

He grew up in Orlando, Fla., and moved to Shawnee in May of 1976.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth E. Sr. and Faye Guffey; and his grandparents.

Survivors include stepmother, Terri Guffey, Shawnee; a son, Kenny Guffey, McLoud; daughter, Krissy Guffey, McLoud; two brothers, George D. Guffey Jr., Orlando, Fla.; Tony Taylor, Shawnee; five sisters, Sharon Jones, Kissimmee, Fla.; Mary Brown, Orlando, Fla.; Patty Weaver, Oregon; Pam Taylor and Denise Mann, both of Shawnee; and several other relatives.

Memorials may be made to the Shawnee Regional Foundation.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel in Shawnee with the Rev. Jimmie Don Gibson officiating.

Henrietta M. Seyffert

Henrietta M. "Kit" Seyffert, Shawnee, died Wednesday in a local hospital. She was 84.

Mrs. Seyffert was born on Sept. 26, 1915, in Columbus, Ind., to Christopher and Clara Hannah (Wolf) Grissel.

She married Walter F. Seyffert on April 11, 1944, in Indianapolis, Ind. Mrs. Seyffert attended school in Columbus. She worked as a department store clerk for many years in Chicago, Ill., before retiring after 23 years.

She moved to Shawnee in 1981 from Indianapolis, and lived most of her life in Chicago.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Seyffert, in 1974; a son, Timothy L. Seyffert, in 1981; her parents, Christopher and Clara Grissel; four sisters; and a brother.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Walter G. and Theresa Seyffert, Shawnee; a sister, Charlotta Meyer, Indianapolis; three grandchildren, Belinda Cagle, Crescent; Shane Seyffert, Shawnee; Timothy L. Seyffert Jr., Bernham, Ill.; two great-grandchildren, Adam and Braden Cagle, Crescent; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel of Shawnee.

John Buford VanSchuyver

John Buford VanSchuyver, 88, Oklahoma City died Wednesday.

He was born July 13, 1911, in Chism to Edward VanSchuyver and Maude Rycroft VanSchuyver.

VanSchuyver married Irene Lamirand Dec. 27, 1933, in Wanette.

He is survived by his wife, Irene of the home; children, Clarissa Bentley, John VanSchuyver Jr., Harold VanSchuyver all of Salinas, Calif and Shirley Rymel of Carmichael, Calif.; siblings, A.H. "Bud" VanSchuyver of Wanette; Millard VanSchuyver of Wanette; Ulysses VanSchuyver of Oklahoma City and Julie White of Norman; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the John M. Ireland Funeral Home, Moore. Burial will follow at Wanette Cemetery.

G. Wilson Montgomery

G. Wilson Montgomery of Janesville, Wis., died Tuesday. He was 81.

He was born May 24, 1918, in Pittsburg, Texas. He was the son of Finis Lone and Rhoda Graham (Wilson) Montgomery.

Montgomery graduated from Centerview High School and married Wilma Lucille Nipper on Aug. 27, 1938. He was employed as a superintendent for the Michigan-Wisconsin Pipe line Co. for 30 years.

He was a resident of Janesville, Wis., for the past 21 years and a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and the Janesville Noon Lions Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers-in-law.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Montgomery, Janesville, Wis.; one daughter, Margaret Fletcher, Janesville, Wis.; two grandsons, Todd Fletcher, New Orleans, La; Neal Fletcher, Janesville, Wis.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Adler and Leona Montgomery, Afton; Bob and Beverly Montgomery, Chanute, Kan.; three sisters, Opal Licklider, Prague; Elwanda Richardson, Shawnee; Mayme Morningstar, Shawnee; one brother-in-law and wife, Willie and Rosa Nipper, Earlsboro; three sisters-in-law and husbands, Melba and Bob Buoy, Prague, Mabel and James Uldrich, Prague; Lorene Nipper, Prague.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Prague with David Licklider and Chuck Utsler officiating. Burial will follow in the Prague Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Prague.

Dorvan H. Duke

Dorvan H. Duke died Thursday. He was 83.

He was born Aug. 15, 1916, in Castle. He was the son of Richard Lee Duke and Ethel (Martin) Duke.

He married Minnie K. Odom March 4, 1950, in Wewoka. Duke served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion and Skyview Baptist Church.

He was an officer for 10 years with the Okemah Police Department, where he was chief of police. He retired after six years as a field deputy for former Sheriff Roy Nichols.

Duke lived in Okfuskee County and the Henryetta area most of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Alice Jane Duke; four brothers, Ed Duke, Bryan Duke, Royce Duke and James Duke, and two sisters, Lois Tompkins and Geneva Walker.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Minnie K. Duke; two sons, Ronnie Duke and his wife Nancy of Henryetta and Dorvan "Nubbin" Duke Jr. and wife Jan of Yukon; one sister, Francis and Leo Kenneda of Okemah; two grandchildren, Matthew Duke and wife Evelyn of Henryetta and Patty Kenneda and Robert of Okemah; two great-grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery under the direction of the Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Okemah.

Bertha Mae Kessinger

Tecumseh resident Bertha Mae Kessinger died Thursday in Tecumseh. She was 74.

She was born May 1, 1925, in Harjo, Okla., to Hebron Rid and Millie (Murphy) Hughes.

She married Vestal Kessinger Dec. 12, 1938, in Tecumseh. He preceded her in death May 31, 1999.

She was raised in Harjo and was a lifelong resident of Pottawatomie County. Mrs. Kessinger was a homemaker and a member of the Maud Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Eddie Tharon Kessinger; two sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include her daughters, Mary Katherine Colon, Tecumseh, Vesta Mae Saxton, Newalla, Leona Mae Cearly, Newalla, Opal Louise Tucker, Shawnee, and Linda Jean Brannon, Earlsboro; sons, Troy Allen Kessinger, Columbia, Ky., Danny Lee Kessinger, Earlsboro, and Jimmy Dean Kessinger, Tecumseh; brothers, Howard Hughes, Earlsboro, Joe Hughes, Sacramento, Calif., and George Hughes, Tecumseh; 34 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Cooper Funeral Chapel in Tecumseh with O.J. Mize officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home, Tecumseh.

Peggy J. Belshe

Shawnee resident Peggy J. Belshe died Wednesday in Shawnee. She was 60.

Mrs. Belshe was born March 29, 1938, in Shawnee to Glen and Agnes (Dobbs) Bohannon. She married Fred W. Belshe in Ada on Jan. 3, 1972.

She had lived in California, graduating from Richmond High School in Richmond, Calif. She moved back to Shawnee in 1971.

She was an emergency room ward clerk at Shawnee Regional Hospital as well as a legal secretary for Spurr, Sharp and Flowers, Attorneys-at-Law and Paul Richards, Attorney-at-Law. She currently owned Busy B's Craft Shop in Tecumseh.

She was active in PTA, Cub Scouts, Blue Birds, BPW, the American Postal Workers Union Ladies' Auxiliary and a member of the Thousand Trails' Camping Reserve. She was a Southern Baptist Church member.

Survivors include her husband, Fred W. Belshe, of the home; daughter, Cindy West, Choctaw; son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Deana Belshe, Shawnee; stepsons, Jack Wright, Tecumseh; Justin Belshe, Lubbock, Texas; stepson and his spouse, Farron and Christi Belshe, Shawnee; mother, Agnes Bohannon, Shawnee; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; sister and brother-in-law, Judy and David Thompson, Shawnee; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Toni Bohannon, Shawnee; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by three children, Baby Girl Swafford, Robert Glen Swafford and Jeanette Marie Casey; and her father, Glen L. Bohannon.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Cooper Funeral Chapel with DuWayne Colvin officiating. Burial will be in Tecumseh Cemetery.

Betty Jo Nolen

Longtime Shawnee resident Betty Jo Nolen died Monday in an Oklahoma City hospital at the age of 72.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Central Church of Christ with Brother Lynch officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

She was born Sept. 12, 1926, in Willow, Okla., the daughter of Cleveland and Fannie (Harris) Jackson. She attended Dunbar High School and was a housekeeper and home health aide.

Preceding her in death were her parents; one brother, William Jackson; one daughter, Joetta Lawson, and one son, James Lawson Jr.

She is survived by one son, James Jackson, Shawnee; three grandchildren, Jocelyn Lewis, Dominique Jackson, Brandon Jackson; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Lena Lawson, McLoud; Elizabeth Johnson, San Jose, Calif.; four brothers, Herbert Jackson, Alvin Jackson, both of Shawnee; Clemmet Jackson, Oklahoma City; Rollin Jackson, Rodeo, Calif., and many other relatives.

Alexander Manek

Lifelong Harrah resident Alexander Manek died Wednesday in Harrah. He was 74.

Manek was born Aug. 6, 1924, in Harrah to Michael and Anna (Wengler) Manek. He was a rancher and retired from Wilson Meat Packing Co. after 35 years. He was a member of the Meat Packers Union.

He won the Best Amateur Fiddler Competition in Harrah in 1976, 1986-1989 and 1991. He was a member of St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Jones.

Survivors include his two brothers, Fred Manek, Piedmont; Mike Manek, Harrah; and two sisters, Susie Fillips, McLoud, and Mary Erbin, Harrah.

Wake services will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Asa Smith Funeral Chapel, Harrah. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Jones, with the Rev. Father Raphael Moore officiating.

Edna Mae Johnson

Longtime Okemah area resident Edna Mae Johnson died Monday in a Chickasha hospital. She was 81.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Parks Brothers Funeral Chapel in Okemah with the Rev. Curtis Townley officiating. Burial will be at Castle Cemetery.

She was born June 14, 1917, on the Camp Ranch west of Okemah, the daughter of Tom P. and Luna Maud Cobb Camp. She attended Okemah High School and graduated at Beebe, Ark. She also attended Oklahoma A&M College at Stillwater.

She married Linnon Maurice Johnson in Okemah on May 19, 1940, and was a homemaker. The couple returned from Chickasha to the Okemah area in 1969. Mrs. Johnson was a member of First Baptist Church, Okemah.

Her husband preceded her in death on April 17, 1997.

Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Johnson Hunt, Chickasha; Marylin and Charles Nease, Dallas, Texas; Frances and Larry Flinn, Grand Prairie, Texas; Luna Burnett, Okemah; sister, Frances Camp, Okemah, and five grandchildren.
