WALTER KIDD
HALLSVILLE, Mo. - Walter Kidd, 60, of Hallsville, Mo., died Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at University Hospital in Columbia after suffering a massive heart attack on October 5th.
A resident of Hallsville since July 2002, formerly of Columbia and Fayette areas since 1999, he was born May 20, 1942 to Roy and Lydia Kidd, and raised in and around Tulsa, Okla.
Mr. Kidd was a surviving triplet whose other brothers died shortly after birth. They were the first set of triplets born in Tulsa.
Mr. Kidd had owned his own paint & body shop in Tulsa from 1964-1980, after that moving to Grove and opening an auction barn called The Big Wheel Auction. Mr. Kidd's father, Roy, started the Sand Springs Children's Home in Sand Springs, Okla., a home for troubled children. Walter's dream was to open a children's home similar to what his father and grandfather started because he was "so great with kids." He was a truant officer as well in Tulsa, helping many troubled youth cope with their own individuality as well as learn how to get along with their family members. Mr. Kidd's dream also was to do a 24" x 40" coloring book. He would ask small children wherever he saw them if they could color and would always say, "I'll go get a cartoon from the car." The smiles on the children's faces were all the thanks Walt needed and he felt blessed to do something special for them.
He was a cartoonist, almost going to work for Walt Disney in the 1960's. He could also restore antique cars to showroom quality.
He was a joy to be around, never met a stranger, and could talk to anyone about anything, usually coming out with a little joke as to what he had talked about.
Survivors include: his wife, Louise, of the home; a stepdaughter and son-in-law, Shari and John McGriff; four granddaughters and one grandson of Lisbon Falls, Maine; and a stepson and daughter-in-law, Rusty and Jean McCammon of Osage Beach, Mo., who are expecting their first child.
