John B. Floyd Jr.
Charleston - John Burdell Floyd Jr., 56, of Charleston, died Saturday, March 22, 2003.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of Mrs. Ethel Frye Floyd and the late Rev. J. Burdell Floyd Sr. He was owner of Charleston Interiors and a member of the New Hope Christian Church of New Zion.

Survivors besides his mother of New Zion include one sister, Elaine (Kenny) Floyd of New Zion; and one brother, Darren (Brandi) Floyd of Mt. Pleasant.

He was preceded in death by his father; a sister, Libby Floyd; and two brothers, Roger Dale Floyd and Jimmy Biven Floyd.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Monday at New Hope Christian Church in New Zion.

Memorials may be made to New Hope Christian Church, P.O. Box 17, New Zion, S.C. 29111.

Louise P. Hilton
Walnut, Calif. - Louise Palmer Hilton, 94, widow of Ferdinand D. Hilton, died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at her residence.

Born Aug. 31, 1908, in the Summerton community of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late James Palmer and Jannie Livingston Palmer.

She was a graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. In her youth, she was a member of Liberty Hill AME Church. After moving to New York, she joined St. James Presbyterian, where she remained for several years. Later, she moved her membership to Church of the Master. She was a seamstress at J.C. Mailie & Co. for many years, retiring in 1975. She was a member of ILGWU.

Survivors include a daughter, Ann L. Palmer Johnson of Walnut; a sister, Jannie Smythe McCoy and Miami, Fla.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother; a son; and a grandson.

Services were held at 1 p.m. at historic Liberty Hill AME Church, with the Rev. Malachi L. Duncan officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were the men of the church and friends of the family.

Floral bearers were members of the stewardess board and friends of the family.

Carl L. Knight
Carl L. Knight, 70, husband of Carah Faircloth Knight, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Nov. 10, 1932, in Warsaw, Ga., he was the son of Helen Knight Billups and the late William Carl Knight. He was retired owner and operator of Knight’s Body Shop in Florence, an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors besides his mother and wife of Manning include a daughter, Lisa Eagleson of Florence; three sons, Les Knight of Hollywood, Calif., Ron Knight of Charlotte, N.C., and Duane Knight of Florence; two sisters, June Herrington of Manning and Sherbie Lancaster of Sumter; and a granddaughter, Leah Knight.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning with the Rev. Jimmy Eldreth officiating.

Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun Street, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Julia I. McFadden
Daytona Beach, Fla. - Julia Isaac McFadden, 75, widow of William McFadden Sr., died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Halifax Medical Center.

Born June 15, 1927, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Dolphis and Emma Ceaser Isaac. She received her formal education from the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she joined Mount Nebo Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, William McFadden and his wife, Vermel, of Manning and Tony McFadden and his wife, Laquanda, of Sumter; two daughters, Emma Lyons and Frances Dinkins and her husband, Charles, of Daytona Beach; a brother, William Calvin; three sisters, Mary Lee Wells, Mariah Daniels and Bessie Calvin; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Eddie Lee Isaac; a daughter, Mary A. McFadden; and six grandchildren.

Services were held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Brock officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Joe Lewis Glassco, Warnobia Abraham, Richard Beckman and Albert Nelson.

J.W. Miles
Joe Wade “J.W.” Miles, 66, husband of Ella Hodge Miles, died Friday, March 21, 2003, at his home in Manning.

Born May 3, 1936, in Kingstree, he was the son of the late Joe Edward and Eliza Barfield Miles. He was a retired machine operator at Cooper Tools in Sumter, and was a member of Fellowship Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include five daughters, JoAnn Revis, Debbie Lee, Tammy Matthews and Sandra McGee of Lake City, and Fran Hyman of Timmonsville; a son, Jamie Tucker of Manning; a brother, Dale Miles of Charleston; three sisters, Myrtle Lee Parker of Lake City, Willa Dean Robinson of Kingstree, and Eloise Tarte of Myrtle Beach; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Bennie Turner officiating, assisted by the Rev. Ray Barfield.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Tommy Benton, Timmy Galloway, Tom Wampler, Tony Harrison, Al Hyman, Johnny Jenkinson and Junior Christmas.

Memorials may be made to Fellowship Freewill Baptist Church, 260 Kingstree Hwy., Manning, S.C. 29102.

Doris A. Posner
Doris Anthony Posner, 82, residing with her daughter and son-in-law, and widower of Charles Philip Posner, died Sunday, March 23, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born March 30, 1920, in Philadelphia, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William H. and Annie Bullin Anthony. She was of the Jewish faith.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna D. Gordon and husband, Chuck, of Manning; three grandchildren, Winsley Anne Hays, Jeffery Dale Junker and Charles Philip Junker; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Boca Raton Mausoleum in Boca Raton, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Leslie Gold Foundation, Children’s National Medical Center, 111 Michigan Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. 20010.

James H. Richbourg
James Hunter Richbourg, 79, widower of Helen Messervy Richbourg, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, in Summerton.

Born Dec. 3, 1923, in Summerton, he was the son of the late Bennie Fladger and Sadie Hunter Richbourg. He was a retired farmer, an Army Air Corps veteran of WWII, a member of Summerton United Methodist Church, where he was president of the Men’s Bible Class, and a member of the Summerton Lions Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Helen Louise Bruggemann of Charleston and Frances Ann Richbourg of Summerton; two sons, James Hunter Richbourg II of Sumter and Alexander John Richbourg III of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Sara Bryan of Columbia; three brothers, Bennie Fladger Richbourg Jr. of Charleston, Ret. Col. John Allen Richbourg of Alexandria, Va., and Henry Morris Richbourg of Port Ludlow, Wash.; and three grandchildren.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Friday at Summerton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carolyn R. Malphrus officiating.

Burial followed in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Louise S. Wells
Louise Smith Wells, 89, widow of Earl Wells, died Friday, March 21, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born April 3, 1913, in Gallipolis, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late John and Bellva Limbley Smith. She was a retired hotel manager in Miami, Fla., and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Manning.

Survivors include a son, Donald J. Baker and wife, Pearl, of Rutledge, Ala.; and four grandchildren.

Private services were to be held at a later date.

Mildred F. Baker
Seaford, Del. - Mildred Frances Baker, 91, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Seaford Center Nursing Facility. She was born in Jefferson City, Mo., on Nov. 25, 1910.

Survivors include a son, Delbert H. Baker of Selbyville, Del.; six grandchildren, Candy Craft of Preston, Md., Scherrie Cogdill of Pinewood, Kim Savage of Bishopville, Md., Delbert H. Baker Jr. of Ocean View, Del., Holly Wingate and Health Baker of Selbyville; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Keith Loren Baker and a daughter Jean B. Parks.

A memorial service will be held in the fall on the beachfront in Ocean City, Md.

Larry Briggs
Larry Briggs, 45, died Thursday, May 20, 2002, at Elliott’s Landing.

Born July 7, 1956, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Pernell and Camillia Briggs. He was a member of Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church and was educated in the public schools of Sumter County.

He was formerly employed at the Yuasa Exide Battery Co. He enjoyed fishing as a hobby.

Survivors besides his parents include two daughters, Kenetra Martin and Maheesha Martin of Rimini; two brothers, Pernell Briggs Jr. of Lamar and Kenneth L. Briggs of Rimini; four sisters, Linda B. King and husband Wilber of Rimini, Georgia Mae Briggs of Hartford, Conn., Afelia Briggs and Beverly Briggs of Pinewood.

Services were 1 p.m. Monday at Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church with the Revs. Warren Hatcher, Amos Hatcher, Richard McKnight Jr., Earl Galloway and Dr. Sylvester Miott officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were former employees of Yuasa Exide Battery Co.
