William R. Fleming
Sumter - William Roy Fleming Sr., 81, husband of Inez Ward Fleming, died Wednesday, November 13, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Willie P. Fleming and Lila Hodge Fleming. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and was a retired construction superintendent with Boozer-Wharton Construction Co. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran.

Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include two sons, Rudolph P. Fleming and Clint Roger Fleming of Sumter; and five grandchildren, David Fleming, Dormy Geddings, Rebecca Elmore, Lisa Buckel and Heather Fleming.

He was preceded in death by a son, William Roy Fleming Jr.; an infant brother, Willie Beathea Fleming; two sisters, Lydia Mitchum and Frances Ward; and two half-brothers, Raymond Hodge and Clint Hodge.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Hodge officiating.

Burial followed in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery.

David Fleming, Champ Geddings, Joshua Pope, Woody Elmore, J.B. Hodge and Thomas Ward served as pallbearers.

Nephews served as honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, S.C. 29150.

William A. Driggers Sr.
William Allen Driggers Sr., 62, died Wednesday, November 13, 2002, at his home in Turbeville.

Born Dec. 28, 1939, in New Zion, he was the son of Sarah DuBose Driggers and the late Joseph Eugene Driggers. He was retired from Campbell’s Soup, a U.S. Coast Guard veteran, and a member of Turbeville First Baptist Church.

Survivors besides his mother of Turbeville include a son, William Allen Driggers Jr. and wife, Diane, of Lynchburg; three daughters, Margaret Coker and husband, Jerry, of New Zion, Deborah Frye of Turbeville and Donna Campbell and husband, Kelvin, of Timmonsville; a brother, Jerry Driggers of Turbeville; two sisters, Sybil Coker of Turbeville and Pearl Windham of Sumter; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and five step grandchildren.

Services were held at noon Saturday in Horse Branch Freewill Baptist Church with the Revs. Bert Petty and Jacob M. Creech officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were George Ray, Jonathan Simmons, Robbie Parker, William Sarrazin, Joey Robinson and Marvin Russ.

Nettie W. McQuaig
Sumter - Nettie Ward McQuaig, 87, died Monday, November 11, 2002, at a local nursing home.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Lewis Ward and Bessie Griffin Ward. She was retired from the Dixie Cup Manufacturing Co. in Darlington with 28 years of service.

Survivors include a son, Allen William McQuaig and his wife, Susan, of Summerville; a daughter, Lucille McQuaig Godfrey and her husband, E.C. “Zeke” Godfrey Jr., of Sumter; a daughter-in-law, Bobbie McQuaig of Hartselle, Ala.; and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Dewey Alvin McQuaig, and four sisters.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Thomas Painter officiating.

Burial followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Florence.

Bertha E. Samuel
Bertha English Samuel, 87, widow of Frank Samuel Sr., died Monday, November 11, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Nov. 25, 1914, in the Westminister section of Alcolu, she was the daughter of the late John English and Minnie Taylor English. She attended Clarendon County public schools and was a lifelong member of Cypress Fork AME Church.

Survivors include two sons, William Johnson of Manning and Frank Samuel Jr. of Alcolu; a daughter, Flora Green and her husband, Lucious, of the home; a granddaughter she raised as her own, April Samuel of Alcolu; a sister, Finney Fleming of Lake City; two sisters-in-law, Minnie Lee Samuel and Bertha Giles of Manning; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a grandson she raised as her own, Vincent Samuel.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cypress Fork AME Church in the Cypress Fork community of Alcolu with the Rev. Leroy Green, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. James S. Hudley and John Frederick.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Ellen Fleming
Charleston - Ellen Fleming, 80, widower of Mary Alice Felder Fleming, of 1681 Courtyard Square, Apt. C, died Tuesday, November 19, 2002, at Charleston Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 16, 1922, in the Biggers section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Vander Fleming Sr. and Anna Dupree Fleming. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he joined Biggers AME Church. He was a retired heavy-equipment operator and later became a self-employed carpenter. His craftsmanship was admired throughout the Charleston area.

Survivors include two sons, James Felder and his wife, Jannette, of Columbia, and Larry Fleming of Charleston; a daughter, Mary Johnson and her husband, Harold, of Charleston; two brothers, Vander Fleming and Booker T. Fleming of Manning; a sister, Evelena Green of Charleston; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Ellen Lee Fleming and Walter Ronnie Fleming; and a daughter, Willie Mae Fleming.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Hayes Samuels Funeral Home with the Rev. Andrew Jordan, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in Muldrow Cemetery.

Norman C. Koernig
Norman Curtis “Shooter Man” Koernig, 77, husband of Marion Irene Wheeler Koernig, died Friday, November 22, 2002, at his home in Summerton.

Born March 9, 1925, in Pittsburgh, Penn., he was the son of the late Hanz and Freida Eich Koernig. He was a retired sales representative for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, a WWII U.S. Marine veteran, and was of the Protestant faith.

Survivors include his wife of Summerton; a daughter, Candy Atkins of Pinckney, Mich.; and four grandchildren, Brandy Atkins and Kristin Atkins of Pinckney, Mich., and Ambria Bellew and Daniel Bellew of Westland, Mich.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Jeffrey A. Welch
Sumter - Jeffrey Allen Welch, 21, son of Louise Johnson Welch and the late Willie Layton Welch, died Sunday, November 17, 2002, in Sumter.

Born Nov. 22, 1980, in Sumter, he was a member of the Salvation Army church.

Survivors include his mother of Sumter; paternal grandmother, Susannah Welch of Sumter; three brothers, Sammy Welch and Willie Welch of Sumter, and Barry Canady of Walterboro; three sisters, Bessie Welch Brown of Sumter, and Charline Canady and Jessica Stanley of Walterboro; nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning.

Burial followed in Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery in Turbeville.

Pallbearers were Bubba Lee, Nathan Knotts Jr., Thomas Knotts, Roscoe Anderson, Chase Keller and Jerry Keller.

Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.

Rev. John M. Welch
The Rev. John Morell Welch, 79, died November 18, 2002, at his home after an illness.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late George Washington Welch and Fannie W. Welch. He was a retired minister with the Free Will Baptist of the Pentecostal Faith Church and was retired from the Clarendon County Public Works Department. He was a member of the Beulah Free Will Baptist of the Pentecostal Faith Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Viola Welch; two brothers, James Welch and Danny Floyd; and one grandson, Bradley Welch.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Alzlee Welch of the home; five sons, George Welch and his wife, Ruby, of Cordova, S.C., Herbert Welch and his wife, Mary Ann, of Greeleyville, Wayne Welch, Marion Welch and his wife, Gloria Denise, and LaGrea Welch and his wife, Katherine, of Turbeville; one foster son, Marion Hayes and his wife, Dale, of Socastee; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Church with Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

William O. White
William O. White, 70, husband of Thelma Harrelson White, died Wednesday, November 20, 2002, at his home in Manning.

Born Jan. 19, 1932, in Manning, he was the son of Doris Oliver White Thames and the late William Alsenia White. He was retired owner and operator of White’s Service Center in Manning and owned a day care center and an antique business. He was a U.S. Army veteran, and a member of Good Shepherd Baptist Church.

Survivors include his mother of Manning; wife of Manning; a son, William O. White Jr. of Manning; two daughters, Kathy W. Flowers Hatfield of Manning and Linda McClendon of Gray, Ga.; two sisters, Betty Jane Daniels of Manning and Doris Verdy of Orangeburg; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Friday in Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning with the Rev. Esta Gilley officiating.

Pallbearers were the Men of Good Shepherd Baptist Church.

Queen K. Williams
Sumter - Queen Kennedy Williams, 61, died Wednesday, November 20, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 29, 1941, in Gable, she was the daughter of the late Jimmie and Norma McGill Kennedy. She attended Sumter County public schools. In her youth, she attended Melina Presbyterian Church, accompanied by her parents.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancey Powell and Vernice Scriven of Sumter; two brothers, James Kennedy Jr. and Maxwell Kennedy and his wife, Mary, of Sumter; four sisters, Lucille Anthony, Bernice McDonald and Mary McFadden of Sumter, and Gerome Shaw and her husband, Alphonso, of Philadelphia, Pa.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Melina Presbyterian Church, USA, Sardinia, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating.
