Cornelia B. McFadden
Cornelia Bryant McFadden, 68, widow of Charlie McFadden, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at her home in Alcolu.

Born July 16, 1934, in Turbeville, she was the daughter of the late James Ernest Bryant and the late Lizzie Jane Hickman Bryant. She was a retired seamstress and a member of Horse Branch Freewill Baptist Church and recently attended Graham Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Hope Miller of Pinewood; a son, William K. Miles of Alcolu; four sisters, Nell B. Heins of Kingstree, Virginia McNeill of Florence, Jane Moore of Mt. Pleasant and Jerry Holladay of Sumter; a brother, James Carlisle Bryant of Hanahan; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. John Patrick officiating.

Burial followed in Horse Branch Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery in Turbeville.

Pallbearers included David Miller, Herman McNeill, Robbie McNeill, Chuck Moore, Ernie Heins and Jamie Holladay.

Dorothy S. Monroe
Sumter - Dorothy Smith Monroe, 81, widow of Jessie Monroe, died Monday, March 31, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 1, 1921, in the New Zion community of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late John and Elouise Cousar Smith.

She attended the public schools of Clarendon County.

During her youth, she was a member of Friendship Presbyterian Church. In the late 1930s, she moved to Sumter and joined the Second Presbyterian Church, where she served faithfully.

Survivors include two daughters, Edith Smith of Sumter and Bernice Daniel of Austin, Texas; a sister, Jeanette Davis of Sumter; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Jessie Monroe, and a brother, Charlie Smith.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Second Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Julia Prince officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. R.E. Bligen Jr., the Rev. Emma W. Thompson and Elder Frances D. Singleton.

Burial followed in Walker Cemetery.

The Presbyterian men served as pallbearers and the Presbyterian women served as floral bearers.

Iro K. Snyder
Iro Kirby Snyder, 75, wife of James DeBerry Snyder Sr., died Thursday, March 27, 2003, in Kingstree Nursing Facility.

Born Nov. 8, 1927, in Timmonsville, she was the daughter of the late Ellison Pickett and Estelle Kirby Kirby. She was a retired line supervisor from Manning Manufacturing, and was a member of Manning United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, James D. Snyder Jr., of Kingstree and Thomas Pickett Snyder of Manning; three daughters, Katherine Anne Stumhofer of Columbus, Ga., Sue Thom of Battle Creek, Mich., and Jeannie Aull of Columbia; a sister, Essie Teal of Lake City; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Debra Quilling officiating.

Burial followed in Snyder Cemetery in Manning.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Manning United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 68, Manning, S.C. 29102 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, Midstate S.C. Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, S.C. 29202-7044.

Eugene Space
Eugene Space, 74, husband of Mrs. Lucile Cantey Space, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at his home.

Born Sept. 28, 1928, he was the son of Mr. Marshall Space and Mrs. Mary Lou Space DeLaine. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County, and he joined St. Mark AME Church of Alcolu and later joined Macedonia Baptist Church in the Jordan community. He was a devoted member and he sang with the Macedonia Male Chorus. He was employed by Stuckey Lumber Co. and Clarendon County Public Works for many years in Clarendon County.

Survivors include six sons, Ralph (Betty) Space, Thomas Joe (Celestine) Space, Raymond Space, Chester Space and Allen Space of Manning and Eugene Michael (Felica) of Hemingway; two daughters, Phyllis (Joe) Adger and Diane (Rev. Emanuel) Evans of Manning; a brother, Richard Johnson of Manning; a sister, Tisbia (Harold) Gipson of Manning; 22 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Willard Space and two children, Sharon Space and Cheyenne Space.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Macedonia Baptist Church in the Jordan community of Manning with the Revs. Johnathan Mouzon, Darryl Frazier, Cokley Richburg, Stephen Bowe, O’Donald Dingle and Curtis Cantey and Evangelist Shirley Williams officiating. Burial followed in State Cemetery.

Robert Mason Nettles
1914-2004
Robert Mason Nettles , 90, husband of Marjorie Brunk Phillips Nettles, died Monday, October 25, 2004 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born April 29,1914, in Wedgefield, he was a son of the late Elias Whilden Nettles and Lucy Mellette Nettles. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Sumter, where he served as a deacon and elder.

Mr. Nettles was twice married, first to the late Roland Tucker Nettles, then to Marjorie Brunk Phillips Nettles.

He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Sumter, where he served as a deacon and elder. Mr. Nettles had a life-long relationship with Nu-Idea School Supply Company, a family owned business founded by his father-in-law, Roy H. Tucker. In 1989, he retired as President and CEO. Mr. Nettles received numerous awards and recognitions for his contributions to the school and church equipment business, including, several times, South Carolina and North Carolina representative to the National School Supply Institute. He served on boards of manufacturers of school desks of church pews and equipment in South Carolina, North Carolina and Texas.

Mr. Nettles served as a member of the YMCA Board, Salvation Army Board, Sumter County Development Board, Sumter Committee for Progress, Sumter-Shaw-Lee Area Boy Scout Board, Sumter Area Chamber of Commerce and the Sumter Rotary Club.

Mr. Nettles was a past member of the Brohun Lake Club, Couples Dinner Club, and charter member of the Cotillion Club. He was also a member of First Families of South Carolina and the Huguenot Society.

Mr. Nettles is survived by his wife of Sumter; 2 sons, Robert Mason Nettles, Jr. of Awendaw and Tucker Whilden Nettles of Pawleys Island; 3 daughters, Roland Nettles Moise of Dallas, Texas and Mary Louise Nettles Dalton of Bassett, Virginia and Nancy Lee Nettles Woodward of Sumter; 3 step–daughters, Carol Phillips Kirven of Sumter, Patricia Phillips McEwen of Rochester, N.Y. and Virginia Phillips Nasipak of Del Ray, Fla.; 2 sisters, Margaret Nettles Crumpton of Sumter, Eliza Ann Nettles Wessinger of Columbia; 16 grandchildren ; 11 great-grandchildren; Numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Elias Whilden Nettles, Jr., and a sister, Louise Nettles McLaurin.

Funeral Services will be held at 2PM Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Dr. William Painter and Dr. Zane Moore officiating.

Burial will follow in the Wedgefield Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

His eight grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Designated Funds, 9 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150, Wedgefield Presbyterian Church, Post Office Box 36, Wedgefield, Covenant Place Endowement Fund, 2825 Carter Rd. Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St. is in charge of the arrangements.

Louella ‘Gurdie’ Britton
Sumter - Louella “Gurdie” Britton, 91, widow of Henry Britton, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at her home.

Born April 21, 1912, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Robert China and Mrs. Elizabeth McCoy China. She was a member of Beulah AME Church, where she served as a member of the Women’s Missionary Society, Stewardess Board, Ladies Club and Church School and Lay Organization. A women’s missionary society unit was named in her honor. She was currently serving as “Mother of the Church.”

Survivors include two sons, George Britton and Harold Britton of Sumter; one daughter, Victoria Prioleau of Springfield, Va.; two sisters, Theola Bouldin of Baltimore and Geraldine Gray of Chesapeake, Va.; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her son, Henry Lee Britton; two brothers, Robert L. China Sr. and Matthew Isaac; and three sisters, Janie Walston, Emily Louise Dancy and Rozenia Lovely.

Services were held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Beulah AME Church with the Rev. O’Neal Miller officiating, assisted by presiding Elder Robert L. McCants, the Revs. St. Julian Snider Sr., Archie S. Temoney Sr., Joshua Dupree and Robert L. China Jr.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Bertie P. Fickling
Sumter - Bertie Parker Fickling, 78, wife of James Alexander Fickling, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at her home.

Born in Conway, she was the daughter of the late Mini Chestnut Parker and Asa Clarence Parker.

She was a member of Bethesda Church of God and was a member and former officer of Women Aglow. She was currently serving as a member of the Board of Elders for Morris Cerello World Evangelist and had for many years.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years of Sumter; two sons, Jimmy A. Fickling Jr. and wife, Bitsey, of Manning and Steve P. Fickling and wife, Vicki, of Wedgefield; one daughter, Sandy F. McLeod of Sumter; four sisters, Florence P. James and Geneva P. Benbow of Sumter, Saddie P. Huggins of Charleston and Jo Nell P. Messey of Ft. Worth, Texas; eight grandchildren, Kirk McLeod III and wife, Stephanie, Ryan McLeod and wife, Wendy, Chad McLeod and wife, Kristi, Heidi F. Drawdy and husband Glenn, Kelly F. Reardon and husband Ben, Bretta F. Richburg and husband Kevin, Misty F. Hatifield and husband Lee, and Windy F. Brown and husband, Eddie; 14 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Bernie Parker, Clarence Parker and Jennings Parker; and her sister, Ruby P. Pendarvis.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethesda Church of God on the Camden Highway, with the Rev. Al Sims officiating.

Burial followed in the Troublefield Cemetery in Wedgefield.

Pallbearers were the grandsons, Kirk McLeod III, Ryan McLeod, Chad McLeod, and grandsons-in-law, Ben Reardon, Kevin Richburg, Lee Hatfield, Glenn Drawdy and Eddie Brown.

Memorials may be made to Bethesda Church of God, 1402 Camden Road, S.C. 521 North, Sumter, S.C. 29150 or to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Gracie L. Flowers
Gracie L. Flowers, 89, widow of James Lee Flowers Sr., died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at the home of her daughter in Lexington.

Born in Sumter County (Woods Bay community), she was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Minnie Seegars Lemmon. Mrs. Flowers was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Manning for approximately 60 years and an active part of the TEL Sunday School Class and of the Friendship House.

Survivors include her son, James L. (Barbara) Flowers Jr. of Manning; a daughter, Dianne (Dennis) Dahm of Lexington; five grandchildren, James L. (Kathy) Flowers III of Lake City, Lana (Paul Glenn) Elliott of Mt. Pleasant, Ashley Dianne Cobb of Lexington, Jessica Lynn Flowers and Dana Marie Flowers of Manning; and two great-grandchildren, Taylor Leigh Flowers of Lake City and Ava Grace Elliott of Mt. Pleasant.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Wayne Flowers of Manning, and granddaughter, Melanie Grace Elliott of Manning.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Dr. Paul Sullivan officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Kenneth Beatson, Tommy Gamble, Willie Anas, Dickey Hodge, Pete Bradham and Larry Williamson.

Memorials may be made to Manning First Baptist Church, 49 W. Boyce Street, Manning, S.C. 29102 or to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.
