William G. Leininger Sr.
William Gordon Leininger Sr., 80, husband of Evelyn Padgett Leininger, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, at his home in Summerton.

Born August 5, 1922, in LeRoy, Ill., he was the son of the late Stanford F. and Pearl Smith Leininger. He was retired from General Electric, a WWII Army veteran, and was of the Presbyterian faith.

Survivors besides his wife, include three daughters, Judy Howard of Decatur, Ill., Melody Leininger of Rantoul, Ill., and Linda K. Hagar (Roger) of Bloomington, Ill.; four sons, William L. “Butch” Leininger of LeRoy, Ill., Donald E. Leininger (Helene) of DeBary, Fla., Jerry Leininger (Cindy) of Bloomington, Ill., and William G. Leininger, Jr. (Janice) of Summerton; a brother, Stanley Leininger of Summerton; a sister, Lucille Williamson of Bloomington, Ill.; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a number of step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald G. Leininger; a brother, Donald F. Leininger; and a grandson.

A memorial service was held at 1 p.m., July 22, at the residence, 1494 Ralph Bell Road in Summerton.

John R. Ryan
John Robert “Jack” Ryan, 55, husband of Virginia “Ginny” Pace Ryan, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, at his home in Manning.

Born June 15, 1948, in Bedford, Ohio, he was the son of Gladys Bartell Nakoneczny and the late James E. Ryan.

He was Vice-President of Gintek, Inc.

Survivors, besides his wife of Manning, and mother of Oakwood Village, Ohio, includes a daughter, Laura Parker (Jason) of Manning; a son, John R. Ryan Jr. (Robin) of Cumberland Furnace, Tenn.; four brothers, James Ryan of Fairview Park, Ohio, Bill Ryan of Lyndhurst, Ohio, Greg Nakoneczny of Uniontown, Ohio, and Mike Nakoneczny of Oakwood Village, Ohio; three grandchildren, Shannon Ryan, Megan Ryan and Gage Parker.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on July 24, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Ruby G. Conyers
Ruby Lee Goines Conyers, 65, wife of Albertus Conyers, died Tuesday, October 22, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 8, 1937, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Blanding and Loree Smiling Goines. She attended Clarendon County schools, namely Brogdon and Paxville elementary schools. She attended Manning Training School, where she was a premier member of the basketball squad. She graduated in the class of 1958. She had been a member of Bethesda Baptist Church since 1954, where she served as a missionary and wherever her services were needed. She was employed with Manning Manufacturer and worked as a fabric turner.

Survivors besides her husband include three daughters, Sallean Goines, Joann Conyers and Lucretia Conyers; four brothers, Barney Goines, Roland Goines, Doris Goines and Clairmont Goines; three sisters, Natharene Riley, Ardell Smiling and Louise Wilson; a grandson considered her child, Anthony Conyers; a niece and nephew she raised as her own, Catherine Stukes and Charles Stukes; special relatives, Everlena Smiling, Catherine Vaughn and Minnie Johnson; special friends, Louise Ragins and Mary Ann Lemon; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Latonya S. Conyers and Little John Goines.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Bethesda Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Walters, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Cokley Richburg, Henry Presley, G.K. Carter and Hazel Charles.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Charles A. Towns
Michigan - Charles A. “Chuck” Towns, of Hersey, Mich., formerly of Genesee, 63, died Sunday, January 12, 2003, at Genesys Hospice Care Center in Goodrich.

Born in Effingham, Ill. on May 26, 1939, he was a resident of the Linden area for over 20 years, before moving to the Evart, Mich. He graduated from Mt. Morris High School in 1957. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Dover, Del. as an airplane engine mechanic. He was involved with various singles organizations for several years. He was an avid fisherman, outdoorsman, loved to dance, and spent the winter months at his house on Potato Creek. He retired from Grand Blanc Mental Fab after 32 years of service and he was a member of UAW Local # 1222.

Survivors include two sons, Adrian and wife, Lori, of Davison, Robbie and wife, Terri, of Columbiaville; five granddaughters, Lindsay and Shelby of Davison, and Darci, Rachelle and Monica of Columbiaville; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services were held at noon Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, with Pastor Brian R. Bunch officiating.

Clarence C. Gamble Sr.
Clarence Carlyle Gamble Sr., 79, husband of Erline Brewer Gamble, died Tuesday, February 11, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Dec. 14, 1923, in Manning, he was the son of the late John M. and Daisy Rawlinson Gamble. He was a retired merchant, and rural mail carrier. He attended the University of South Carolina and was a WWII Army veteran.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include a daughter, Alice Jordan and husband, Ronnie, of Manning; a son, Carl Gamble and wife, Judy, of Manning; a brother, Sam O. Gamble of Manning; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Manning United Methodist Church with the Revs. Steve Shugart and David Caughman officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers included O’Neil Ward, Lynn Gamble, Bob Lybrand, Wes Thompson, David Thompson, and Sam Gamble Jr.

Honorary pallbearers included the Men’s Bible Class of Manning United Methodist Church, the Mullett Club and Dr. C.E. Coker Jr.

Memorials may be made to the Daisy Gamble Mission House of the Manning United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 68, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Lovie Mae Williams
Jersey City, N.J. - Lovie Mae Cochran Williams, 90, widow of Rufus Wingate Williams, died Tuesday, February 18, 2003, at Greenville Hospital in Jersey City, N.J.

Born Jan. 2, 1913, in the Silver community of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Ramson Cochran and Ida Rhames-Hanks Cochran. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and Morris College. She joined Trinity AME Church in Manning at an early age, and later became a member of St. Luke AME Church in New York City, N.Y. She was employed by the public schools of Clarendon County teaching at Jordan School and Mt. Nebo, and was later employed at a nursing facility in Bronx, N.Y.

Survivors include a son, Willie Williams and his wife, Ruth, of Columbia, Md.; three daughters, Ray Ida Davis Bilal and her husband, Amin, of Brooklyn, N.Y., Gloria Annette Williams-Boyd and her husband, John Zadroga, and Alberta Dubose and her husband, John, of Jersey City, N.J.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Susie Cochran, and two brothers, Willie Cochran and James M. Cochran.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Monday at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning with the Rev. John Fredrick officiating, assisted by the Rev. Rufus Gaymon.

Burial followed at Manning Cemetery.

Neimiah Boatright
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Neimiah “Dumpy” Boatright, 36, husband of Valery Moses Boatright, died Sept. 20, 2003, in a trucking accident near Newark, N.J.

Born May 24, 1967, in Manning, he was a son of Fredrick Boatright and Ernestine Johnson Boatright. He graduated from Manning High School in 1985. He also received certification in brick masonry and truck driving certification in Miami. In his youth, he attended Sunday school and worship services at St. John Baptist Church. He was presently employed by Best Transportation Inc. as a professional driver.

Survivors besides his wife, Valery Boatright of the home, and his parents, Frederick and Ernestine Boatright Sr. of Manning, include two sons, Daquan Josha Boatright of the home and Neimiah Quayshawn June of Manning; two stepdaughters, Melinda Moses of New York City and Tracy Moses of St. Vincent, West Indies; three brothers, Willie James (Deloris) Johnson, Stanley (Ingrid) Boatright, both of Manning, and Frederick (Heidi) Boatright Jr. of Seattle; two sisters, Ruth Ann (Kenneth) Clark and Lillian (Harold) Bradley, both of Manning; mother-in-law, Mary Moses of New York City; paternal grandfather, the Rev. Acie Boatright of Manning; maternal grandfather, Frednand Hilton of Springfield, Ill.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John Baptist Church, Brewer Road, Manning, with the Rev. Otis Wright, pastor, officiating, assisting the Revs. David Lawson, Calvin Burgess, Carnell Witherspoon and the Rev. Charles Smith. Burial was in St. Matthew Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Mildred Pringle
Lane - Mildred Elizabeth Kennedy Pringle, 90, widow of Samuel Mayes Pringle Sr., died Sunday, March 2, 2003, at her residence.

Born April 21, 1912, in Alcolu, she was the daughter of the late Mark Calvus and Lillie Betts Player Kennedy.

Mr. and Mrs. Pringle were married on December 11, 1930, in Manning, and were longtime residents of Sumter.

They were former members of First Presbyterian Church of Sumter, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of Evenings Ladies Circle. She retired as a dental hygienist for Dr. Charles Penny. Mrs. Pringle was a member of Union Presbyterian Church in Salters.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Pringle was preceded in death by an infant daughter and a sister, Mrs. Lessie Kennedy Daniels.

Survivors include her sons, Samuel Mayes Pringle and his wife, Brenda, of Surfside Beach, and Charles Gary Pringle and his wife, Dolores, of Myrtle Beach; seven grandchildren, Cassandra Smith and Lisa Smith of Florence, Debra Brown of Clearwater, Fla., Boyd Pringle of Raleigh, N.C., Alex Pringle of Greenville, Betsy Pringle of Mount Pleasant and Maxx Pringle of Clemson University and Myrtle Beach; five great-grandchildren, Kerri and Winn Smith, Merritt and Marley Smith, and Lillian Pringle; a sister, Mrs. Eloise Kennedy Davis of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel in Kingstree.

Burial followed in Concord Presbyterian churchyard on Brewington Road in Sumter.

Memorials may be made to Union Presbyterian Church or to Tidelands Hospice.

Virginia W. Johnson
Pinewood - Virginia Warley Johnson, 94, died Sunday, February 16, 2003, at Windsor Manor Healthcare Systems in Summerton.

Born Oct. 15, 1908, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late James Warley and Priscilla Gibson Warley. She was married to the late Purdy Johnson Sr. In her youth, she attended Mt. Zero Baptist Church in Manning. After marriage, she joined New Hope AME Church, where she served faithfully on the missionary and stewardess board. She was also the mother of the church.

Survivors include five children, Woodrow (Hattie) Johnson of Pinewood, Solomon (Cleo) Johnson of Sumter, Evelyn Johnson of Pinewood, Virginia Walker of Columbia and Gardenia (Lawrence) Green of Rimini; one sister, Gardenia Fair of Columbia; two additional sisters-in-law, Ruth Warley of Wilmington, N.C., and Evelyn Gallishaw of Richmond, Va.; 15 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, six brothers and eight children.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday at New Hope AME Church, Pinewood, with the Rev. J.D. Seawright, pastor, assisted by the Revs. Roosevelt Boyd, Jack Dais, James Robinson, Edward Moultrie Sr. and E.J. Timmons.

Burial followed in New Hope Community Cemetery.

Bob A. Turner
Bob Arnold Turner Sr., 57, husband of Marian Nesbitt Turner, died Mon., Sept. 22, 2003, at his home.

Born in Williamsburg County, he was the son of Elizabeth Turner Flowers and the late Hazel Turner. He was employed by Georgia Pacific with 25 years of service.

Survivors, besides his wife of Sumter, and his mother of Greeleyville, include two sons, Bobby Turner of Cades and Daniel Turner of Sumter; a brother, Ricky Turner of Greeleyville; and two grandchildren, Emily Turner and Wesley Turner.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Olin Turner.

Services were held at 3 p.m., Wed., Sept. 24, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Grover Mixon and Dr. Clay Smith officiating.

Burial followed in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Greeleyville.

Pallbearers included Bill Wingate, Woody Lathan, Garry Nesbitt, Daryl Turner, John Alan Hanniford and Davey Eargle.

Memorials may be made to the Greeleyville Baptist Church, 136 Varner Ave., Greeleyville, SC 29056.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium was in charge of the arrangements.
