Margueritte Loyd

UNION — Graveside service for Margueritte Walker Loyd, 83, formerly of Columbia, will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Columbia. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Wednesday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, Columbia.

Mrs. Loyd died Monday, December 13, 2004. Born in Alcolu, she was a daughter of the late Eugene Calhoun Walker and Daisy Woods Walker. She was a member of Greenlawn Baptist Church, Columbia.

Surviving are her husband, Roy T. Loyd; son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Beth Loyd of Daleville, Va.; grandchildren, Matt and Megan Loyd, both of Daleville, Va.; and nieces, Helen Monts Miller of Chapin and Nancy Walker Monts of Greenville. She was predeceased by sister, Mary “Liz” Monts.

James Merrill Sr.

GRAY COURT — Services with burial for James Walker Merrill Sr., 87, Union Lodge #1 member, widower of Alma Williams Merrill, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Poplar Spring AME Church, where he was a member. Visitation is 7-8 tonight at Goins Funeral Home. He died Dec. 11, 2004. Surviving are son, John; siblings, Willie Merrill, Gladys Cook, Martha Irby; grandchildren; great, great-great-grandchildren.

Bernice Kizer

ST. GEORGE — Mrs. Bernice M. Kizer, 73, of 129 Harris Drive, St. George, SC entered into eternal life on Sunday December 12, 2004 at her residence.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in Bryant Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wayne Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Indian Field United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday evening at Bryant Funeral Home, 607 North Parler, Avenue, St. George.

Mrs. Kizer was born December 12, 1931 in Kingstree a daughter of the late Earnest Dozier McElveen and Mildred Burrows McElveen. She was a resident of St. George for 60 years, a retired employee of Carolina Girlswear and a member of Indian Field United Methodist Church. She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Catherine Waitts Hickman and a sister, Mildred M. Franklin.

Surviving is her husband of 33 years, Harris B. Kizer, St. George; a son, Davey (Kathy) Stallings, Cabot, Arkansas; daughters; Sandra (John) Gause, Arlington, Texas ; Janet (Terry) Roberts; St. George; Rebecca (Bill) Marchant, Harleyville; brothers, Willie (Marie) McElveen, Bonneau, and Earnest McElveen, Jr., Charleston; a sister, Mary (John) Ray, Goose Creek, 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials to Hospice Care of Charleston, 3870 Leeds Avenue, Suite 101, North Charleston, SC 29405.

Nancy Kirkley

LANCASTER — Services for Nancy Jane Kirkley, 68, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rocky Creek Presbyterian Church. Visitation is 5-6:30 tonight at Sutton Funeral Home, Pageland. Born in Jefferson to George and Nettie Jordan Kirkley, she died December 13, 2004. Surviving are her brothers, Melvin and Pressley Kirkley; sister, Betty Sue Kirkley.

Edith Griffin

COLUMBIA — Service for Edith Kirkwood Griffin, 79, will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Park Street Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the church. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of Mrs. Griffin’s Sunday School class. The family will receive friends at the residence, 3704 Beverly Drive, Columbia, S.C. 29204. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Mrs. Griffin, wife of the late Dr. John Griffin, died Saturday, December 11, 2004 Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late David B. Winn, Sr., and Viola Peake Winn Cribb. She was a longtime employee of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. She was a member of Park Street Baptist Church, DAR, United Daughters of the Confederacy and VFW Auxiliary.

Surviving are sons Robert L. Waldrep, Jr., of Columbia, and Stephen K. Waldrep and his wife, Shellina, of York; sisters, Margaret W. Fletcher of Columbia, Lorine W. Richardson of Springdale, Violet W. Geiger of Columbia and Betty W. Flowers of Cayce; and brother, David B. Winn, Jr. of Columbia. She was predeceased by former husband, Earle Kirkwood; and sisters, Myrtle W. Sharpe and Catherine W. Steppe.

Esther Keasler

GASTON — Visitation for Esther Mae Keasler, also known as “Peaches,” 70, was Monday 7-9 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Mrs. Keasler, wife of the late Audrey Keasler, died Fridy, December 10, 2004. Born in Dillon, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Lorena Fuqua Hunt. She was employed with R.C. McEntire Produce Company.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Juanita and Calvin Myers of Gaston; stepson, Herbert Smith and his wife, Cindy Smith of South Congaree; stepsister, Debra Smith of West Columbia; grandchildren, Victoria Smith, Bambi Lamears and her husband, John Finney, Bandi Lamears, Stephanie McGill, Chrissy, Jessica Smith and Ryan Smith; seven great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Keasler was a loving person who never met a stranger.

William Hudson Jr.

COLUMBIA — Services for William Morris Hudson Jr., of 7304 Cabin Creek Road, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Palmer Memorial Chapel. Born in Valdosta, Ga., he was the son of the late William Morris Hudson Sr. and Nanny Manning Hudson. Surviving are his daughter, Mattie (Tommie) Ashford of Hopkins, SC and a sister, Eunice Manning.

Eddie Hemphill

CHESTER — Services for Eddie Dean Hemphill, 48, Cultured Stone employee, are noon Wednesday: Brooklyn AME Zion Church with burial in Old Zion AME Zion Cemetery. Viewing is 3-9 tonight at King’s Funeral Home. Born in Chester Co. to Eddie and Virgie Wright Hemphill, he died Dec. 11, 2004. Surviving: wife, Helen Hughes Hemphill; children, Trevar, Trametra, Toneka, Towanda; siblings.

Vernie Huffstetler

GREAT FALLS — Services for Vernie Lee Huffstetler, 88, retired from J.P. Stevens Co., member of Trinity Baptist Church, 1:30 p.m. Wednesday (noon visitation) at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home; burial: Greenlawn Cemetery. Born in York Co. to Henry and Estie Moore Huffstetler, he died Dec. 13, 2004. Surviving are wife, Lula Mae; children, Vernie Huffstetler, Valeta Lathan; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

Robert Welch

KINGSTREE — Robert Winslow Welch, 85, died Tuesday, December 14, 2004 at a Williamsburg County hospital. A graveside service will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM in Kingstree Memorial Gardens directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.

Mr. Welch was born in Kingstree, SC, a son of the late William H. and Elizabeth Winslow Welch. Mr. Welch was a graduate of The Citadel in 1942 as a Gold Star Student and a member of the Regimental Staff. Mr. Welch was the former President of Winslow Chevrolet Cadillac of Kingstree. He served in the Air Force from 1942-1946 and was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force Reserve. He was also a charter member of the Optimist Club of Kingstree and a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church.

Mr. Welch is survived by his wife, Vallie McCutchen Welch; two daughters, Louise Welch of Charleston, SC and Stark Welch of Dallas, TX; a stepson, Milton Mack Duke and a stepdaughter, Jimmie Lou Morris, both of Kingstree; four stepgrandchildren and one stepgreat-grandchild and a brother, James White Welch of Kingstree, SC. He was predeceased by a daughter, Wynn Welch Powell; two brothers, William H. Welch, Jr., Edward C. Welch and a sister, Mary Elizabeth Welch Dixon Cheezem.

Memorials may be made to The Citadel, Kingstree United Methodist Church, or the Williamsburg County Regional Hospital.

Evelyn Goff

ELGIN — Funeral services for Evelyn Motley Goff, 80, will be held Friday, December 17, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Blaney Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 16, 2004 from 6-8 p.m. at Kornegay Funeral Home, Lugoff Elgin Chapel. Memorials may be made to Blaney Baptist Church, 1400 Blaney Road, Elgin, SC 29045.

Mrs. Goff, widow of Paul Otis Goff, died Tuesday, December 14, 2004. Born in Blaney, she was the daughter of the late John and Lottie Ross Motley and adopted mother, Mattie Ross. Mrs. Goff had retired from Clemson Sandhill Experimental Station and was a member of Blaney Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Edward Jones of Elgin; son and daughter-in-law, Byron and Ruby Goff of Camden; granddaughter, Tanya Jones Sawyers of Stuart, Va.; grandsons, Ryan Jones of Herndon, Va., and Brandon Goff of Columbia; great-grandson, McCray Lee Sawyers.

Ida Mae Rothell

GREENVILLE — Ida Mae Charles Rothell, 89, passed away on December 14, 2004, at her home in Greenville. Born in Saluda, South Carolina, on December 6, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Lyman Charles and Elizabeth Milligan Charles. Ms. Rothell worked as an administrative assistant at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee during and after its construction and held similar positions in companies in South Carolina, Ohio, and Colorado. She retired from Lawrence Systems of Denver, Colorado, in 1980 and moved to Greenville in 1987.

A member of Lee Road Baptist Church, Ms. Rothell was an expert at cross-stitch needlework and enjoyed travel. For several years, she was a dedicated volunteer for the Greenville Meals on Wheels program. Her husband, Claude Rothell, and four brothers, Carman White Charles, George Allen Charles, David Polk Charles, and Charlie Louis Charles, predeceased her.

Survivors include her sisters, Nancy Elizabeth “Betty” Charles of Greenville and Sarah Allaphaire Harvey of Columbia; her cousin, Margaret Milligan Allsep of Simpsonville; several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. at Red Bank Baptist Church, Saluda, South Carolina, on Thursday, December 16,2004. Ramey Funeral Home of Saluda will handle arrangements for the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Francis Hospice, 414 Pettigru Street, Greenville, SC 29601.
