COLEY L. WILLARD JR.

Coley Leonard Willard Jr., 71, husband of 39 years to Barbara A. Willard, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Union, he was a son of the late Coley Leonard Willard Sr. and Edna Alice McDonald Valletta Willard. Mr. Willard was a retired senior master sergeant of 26 years, serving during the Korean War and Vietnam War, and was a member of the 9th Air Force I.G. Team. He received an associate degree from Sumter Technical College in criminal technology. He was a devoted husband and father, and he attended Shaw Heights Baptist Church. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a son, Ray Willard and his wife, Cathy, of Columbia; two daughters, Denese Lamer of Sumter and Cindy Willard and fiancee, Russell Jones, of Lexington; and a devoted friend, Barbara Ann Wood of Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. Victor Cheek officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with full military honors. Pallbearers will be Harold Reynolds, Ron Rice, Carl Livingston, Jim Sullivan, Johnny Arnold and Leroy Sohrweid. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, and at other times at the home on Meadow Drive. THEODORE DIGGS

Theodore Diggs, husband of Betty Lou Johnson Diggs, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born June 17, 1933, he was a son of Rita Dinkins Diggs and the late Gill Diggs. The family will receive friends at the home, 5525 Dinkins Mill Road, Rembert. Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home.

ESAW GREEN

Esaw Green, widower of Ruth Linton Green, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia. Born Dec. 14, 1919, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Thomas and Emmaline Nelson Green. Mr. Green was a lifelong member of St. Mark 4-Bridges Baptist Church. He attended Sumter County public schools. He later enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He was a Civil Service employee at Shaw Air Force Base. He relocated to Paterson, N.J., where he was employed in the garment industry. He enjoyed sightseeing and visiting with people and staying active with the Santee Senior Services program at Shiloh Randolph Manor. Survivors include two sons, Willie Green of Sumter and Anthony Green of Clifton, N.J.; four daughters, Dessie McGee and Jannetta Smith, both of East Orange, N.J., Shirley Baker of Sumter and Marjorie Thompson of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, George Green of Sumter; a sister, Mamie Jenkins of Savannah, Ga.; 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Esaw Green Jr.; five brothers, Henry, Sampson, Thomas Jr., Hazel and John “Booster”; and two sisters, Janie Dyson Davis and Annie Davis. A wake service will be held at 6 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc.. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mark 4-Bridges Baptist Church with the Rev. Sammie Simmons, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Esau Harris and the Rev. Willie Lawson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Shirley Baker, 2645 Homestead Road. DENNIS NICKENS

DALZELL — Dennis “Pee Sing” Nickens Sr., widower of Janie Jefferson Nickens, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at 4815 Cannery Road, Dalzell. Born Sept. 3, 1923 in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Dennis Nickens Sr. and Ellen Keith Nickens. Mr. Nickens attended the public schools of Sumter County. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Twelve Tribes of Israel Lodge No. 11. “Pee Sing,” as he was affectionately called by family and friends, was a devoted, loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. All of the children in the neighborhood adored him and were known to call him granddaddy. Survivors include four sons, John Henry and Thomas, both of Dalzell, and Dennis William and James Edward, both of Sumter; two daughters, Ella and Ernestine, both of Dalzell; 24 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three children, Mary Ellen, Michael and James Edward. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Grant Hill Baptist Church in Dalzell with Rev. R. Edwin Bennett, pastor, officiating and Rev. Bennie Bradley and Rev. Roberta Wilson assisting. Burial will be in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Rembert. Pallbearers will be friends of the family. Floral bearers will be friends of the family. The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home of his daughter, Ella Brunson, 4826 Cannery Road, Dalzell. AMMIE MIMS

Ammie E. Mims, 86, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at National Healthcare System. Born in Pinewood, she was a daughter of the late Alvin Mims and Corrine Wells Mims. Ms. Mims was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church where she was a member of the Fedelis Sunday School Class. She was retired from the Franklin Co., Ohio Highway Department. Survivors include a niece, Anne M. Moye of Sumter; a nephew, Norman W. Mims Jr. of Kingsland, Ga. and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Services will be held at 4 p.m. today in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with Dr. Clay Smith officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:30 to 4 p.m today at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 2440 U.S. 521 South. STANLEY PARTYKA

Stanley Partyka, 45, husband of Mary Susan Partyka, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Uniontown, Pa., he was a son of Lillian Collins Partyka and the late Joseph F. Partyka. Mr. Partyka was employed as a manufacturing engineer with Bosch Braking Systems of Sumter, and was a U.S. Navy veteran and a graduate of California University of Pennsylvania. He was a member of First United Pentecostal Church of Sumter. Survivors besides his wife include two sons, David Joseph Partyka of Charleston and Timothy Alan Partyka of Sumter; three daughters, Sarah Joy Partyka of Fairchance, Pa., Lydia Grace Partyka of Springfield, Ohio and Jennie Elizabeth Partyka of Sumter; two brothers, Joseph F. Partyka and Daniel Partyka, both of Uniontown; a sister, Lana Jo Partyka of Uniontown; and three grandchildren, Katelyn Faith Partyka, Caleb Jordan Partyka and Kyle David Argabright. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at First United Pentecostal Church on Plowden Mill Road in Sumter with Rev. Theron Smith officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Eleanor Jane Calvert Alpert, 85, widow of Maxie Louis Alpert, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Providence Hospital/Heart Institute. Born in Augusta, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Yencie Clay and Jennie Pepper Calvert. Mrs. Alpert was the past owner of Alpert’s, a ladies apparel shop. She was an active member of the Temple Sinai of Sumter. She was a member of the Temple Sinai Sisterhood, past president of the Poinsettia Garden Club, a member of Sumter Daughters of the American Revolution and Cosmopolitan Club. Survivors include a daughter, Cynthia Alpert Saad of Columbia; two sons, Dr. Richard Louis Alpert of Greenville and Dr. Calvert Clay Alpert of Charleston; 12 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Maxine Calvert Alpert Kline of Columbia; and a brother, Yale Clayton Calvert of Hanahan. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Temple Sinai in Sumter, with Rabbi Schlager officiating. Burial will be in the Jewish Cemetery. NORTH CHARLESTON — James M. Boyce, husband of Frances Bennett Boyce, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at his home in North Charleston. Born Jan. 13, 1923, in Lee County, he was a son of James Walter Boyce and Mary Baker Boyce. Mr. Boyce was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, when he served in the SeaBees, and he was a member of Pittman Street Baptist Church. He was retired from Superior Utilities. Survivors besides his wife of North Charleston include a son, James M. Boyce Jr. of North Charleston; two daughters, Frances “Fran” Boyce Cummings of North Charleston and Kimberly Boyce Harris of Charleston; a brother, Hazel E. Boyce of Manning; two sisters, Margaret Boyce Sims of Walterboro and Esther Boyce Powell of Sumter; and six grandchildren, Nicholas Cummings, Marion Boyce III, Lauren Marie Cummings, Sarah Nell Boyce, Michael Harris and Chelsea Cummings. Survivors besides his mother of Sumter include five brothers, Randy Durham, Dwayne Durham and Keith Durham, all of Sumter, Paul Durham of Aynor and Andrew Durham of Reno, Nev.; two sisters, Kathy Lee of Blythewood and Candice Moody of Columbia. Ernestine Skinner Koiner, 92, widow of Kent K. Koiner, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at her home. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late James L. Skinner and Mary Woodham Skinner. Mrs. Koiner was twice married, first to the late Carl Muldrow, then to the late Kent K. Koiner. Survivors include two sisters, Virginia Harris and Dorothy Skinner, both of Spartanburg; and two brothers, T.L. “Dick” Skinner of Oswego and Jimmy C. Skinner of Doraville, Ga. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Kathleen S. Smith, Emily S. Asbill and Ila S. Kennedy. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Piedmont Cemetery in Bishopville, with the Rev. CLAYTON A. WHITE Sr.

Clayton Alden White Sr., 82, husband of 53 years to Carol Poole White, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born in Taunton, Mass., he was a son of the late Dr. Henry A. and Zora Wheeler White. Mr. White was a graduate of Duke University. He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre with the 4th Infantry Division from 1942 to 1945. He landed on Utah Beach in the second wave on June 7, 1944. His working years were spent in East Hartford, Conn., with United Aircraft for 20 years and later in Washington, D.C., with the U.S. Department of the Navy for 16 years. He was of the Protestant denomination. Survivors in addition to his wife include three sons, Clayton Alden White Jr. and his wife, Carol, of Jupiter, Fla., Dr. Charles T. White and his wife, Debbie, of Cary, N.C., and Steven L. White and his wife, Jean, of Frederick, Md.; and six grandsons, James H. White, William L. White, C. Thayer White Jr., Douglas C. White, Richard C. White and Brian G. White. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bullock Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Bruce Cleasby officiating. Lena Hunter Chatman, wife of William Chatman, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Born Sept. 4, 1935, in Winston-Salem, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Johnny and Alice Baker Hunter. ATLANTA, Ga. — Zachry Taylor Lee died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, in Atlanta. Born Feb. 10, 1912, in Gordon, Ga., Mr. Lee is survived by his second wife, Ora Patterson Lee of Sumter, S.C., three daughters and six grandchildren. Ebonye Sakiea Dargan died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 27, 1979, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Lewis Dargan and Emma Louise McClam Dargan. She attended Sumter County public schools and was a 1998 graduate of Sumter High School. She was employed at Burger King. Survivors include two sons, Dikeem Dargan and Anthony Pringle Jr.; a brother, Darrell McClam of Sumter; a sister, Audrianna Dargan of Sumter; her maternal grandmother, Icybell McClam; and her paternal grandparents, Isaac Dargan and Angeline Dargan of Sumter. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Mitchell McClam. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc. with the Rev. DALZELL — Katherine Irene Owens Held, 72, widow of Leon A. Held, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, in Conyers, Ga. Born in Venice, Ill., she was a daughter of the late John Owens and Ann Young Owens. Mrs. Held was a Lutheran. Survivors include a daughter, Keiko Humphries of Conyers, Ga.; two sisters, Pearl Bradshaw and Mary Riddle, both of Illinois; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Tom Owens; and three sisters, Juanita Hasty, Penny Price and Martha Bucherich. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with Ronald Briggs officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. KATIE W. JACKSON

Katie Willis Jackson, widow of Joseph Jackson, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Hopewell Healthcare Center. Born Aug. 28, 1911, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Wesley Willis Sr. and Dinah Dicks Willis. Mrs. Jackson attended Sumter County public schools. In her youth she joined Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, where she was active in many areas. She was a trustee, Sunday school teacher, class leader, and a member of the senior choir and United Methodist Women. She was honored by the United Methodist Women in 1995 and was the “mother of the year.” Survivors include an adopted daughter, Betty Jean Willis; a special grandson, Roland Johnson; a niece, Rosa Lee Richards of Sumter; and special nephews, William Richards, Burl Holmes Jr., Hazel Willis, Herman Willis and Samuel Pringle, all of Sumter. She was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Telley Lynette Gadson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. John Dicks, the Rev. Jonathan Brown Jr. and Chaplain Willie Dicks. Burial will be in Dicks Cemetery. REV. THOMAS E. LAMM

MANNING — The Rev. Thomas Eleon Lamm, 78, husband of Annie Lucille Smith Lamm, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born May 6, 1922, in Greer, he was a son of the late Arthur Lamm and Laura Pressley Lamm Crisp. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a retired machinist, having been employed by Akro-Mold in Akron, Ohio. He was a retired Baptist minister, having served in Burnett Cove, N.C., the founder of Glendale Baptist Church in Ohio and also served in Lakemore Baptist Church in Ohio. He was a member of Manning First Baptist Church and the Breedin Sunday School Class. Survivors besides his wife of Manning include four daughters, Brenda Ammons and Lou Ann Davis, both of Akron, Ohio, Barbara Sampson of Albertville, Ala., and Beverly Foraker of Manning; a brother, William Lamm of Greer; a half brother, Frank Crisp of Greer; two half-sisters, Louise Church and Helen Brown, both of Greer; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Manning First Baptist Church with Dr. Paul Sullivan and Dr. David Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Clarendon Memorial Gardens. MANNING — Elreeda “Rita” Lawson Martin, 62, wife of Alpheus Martin, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston. Born April 5, 1938, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Augusta Stokes and Mary Lou Lawson Frazier and the stepdaughter of the late Jerry Frazier. Mrs. Martin attended Manning Training School. She was a member of Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton, where she served as a faithful member of the YWA. She was employed by Best Western and Wee Academy for a number of years. Survivors besides her husband of Manning include two sons, Wayne Martin of Manning and Kenneth Martin of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a daughter, Angela Martin of Manning; three brothers, Willie Frazier of Queens, N.Y., Sammie Lee Frazier of Washington, N.C., and Cleveland Frazier of Miami, Fla.; three sisters, Tyronia Bonaparte of Summerton, Eartha Lee Bennett of Summerton and Frances Green of Jamaica, N.Y.; and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Taw Caw Baptist Church in Summerton with the Rev. W.T. Johnson, pastor, officiating, assisted by Prophetess Regina Conyers. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Angela Martin, Alfred Henry Drive, Apt. 1-A, Manning. Samuels Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

K. KIRBY STRICKLAND

DALZELL — Kenneth Kirby Strickland, 68, husband of Rosemarie T. Strickland, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at his home. Born in Mullins, he was a son of the late Troy L. Strickland and Daisy Stroud Strickland. Mr. Strickland was a member of Dalzell United Methodist Church. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, a York Rite Mason, a past master of Hillcrest Lodge AFM No. 397 and a Shriner. He was a member of the South Carolina Masonic Research Society, a life member of VFW Post No. 3034 and a life member of the Midland Retired Military Association. He was a retired U.S. Air Force master sergeant with 26 years of service and a Vietnam veteran. He was first married to the late Bobbie Jean McRae Strickland. Survivors besides his wife of Dalzell include a son, Kenneth Kirby Strickland Jr. of Florence; a stepdaughter, Laura Cox and her husband, Mark, of Dalzell; a stepson, Jim Perdue of New Jersey; two brothers, Calvin M. Jones of Nichols and Luther E. Jones of Galivants Ferry; a sister, Janie Drew of Fairbluffs, N.C.; and two grandchildren; Katie Cox and Brandon Cox. He was preceded in death by a sister, Sarah Causey. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Sterne Bolte officiating. Burial will be in Florence National Cemetery with full military honors and Masonic rites. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Tri-County Hospice, 2650-A Hardee Cove, Sumter, SC 29150. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

REBECCA WHITE

Rebecca White died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born May 17, 1918, in Walterboro, she was a daughter of the late Ben and Anna Middleton White. Ms. White attended Walterboro public schools. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Survivors include a brother, Efird White of Sumter; a sister, Bertha Boulds of Walterboro; and nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by a son, Julius White. A wake will be held from 10 a.m. until 11 Friday before the funeral service at Job’s Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Job’s Mortuary with the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the home, 332 Ben St. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

LILLIE F. EADDY

MANNING — Lillie Mae “Nunk” Francis Eaddy, 66, widow of James Eaddy, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 17, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness. Born Dec. 22, 1934, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Steven Francis and Sally Witherspoon Francis Gillison and a stepdaughter of the late Mike Gillison. The family will receive friends at the home, Route 1, Box 790, Brewington Road, Alcolu. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home.

ESAU GREEN

Esau Green, widower of Ruth Linton Green, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 17, 2001, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia. Born Dec. 1, 1919, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Tom and Emmaline Nelson Green. The family will receive friends at the home of Shirley Baker, 2645 Homestead Road. Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc.

DALZELL — Katherine Irene Held, widow of Leon A. Held, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, in Conyers, Ga. Services will be announced by Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home in Sumter.

RUTH E. COLAW

Ruth M. Estes Colaw, 89, wife of Retired Lt. Col. Owen L. Colaw, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Covenant Place in Sumter. Born Sept. 8, 1911, in Yosemite, Ky., she was a daughter of the late Henry Clay and Bessie T. Pigg Estes. Mrs. Colaw was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Trinity Fellowship Sunday School Class and Circle No. 5. She was a member of Sumter’s Home Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star, having been a member for over 50 years, and served as a nurse’s aide during World War II. Survivors besides her husband include a son, Larry W. Colaw and his wife, Barbara, of Tellico Village, Tenn.; a daughter, Shirley J. Howell, wife of Retired Col. Philip V. Howell Jr. of Sumter; six grandchildren; Constance L. Howell and Elizabeth J. Griggs, both of Columbia, Lecia A. Corn of Enoree, Richard M. Colaw of Phoenix, Ariz., Major Rebecca S. Colaw of Portsmouth, Va., and Brad L. Colaw of Morganton, N.C.; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the chapel at Trinity United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the National Cemetery in Florence. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church Youth Ministry, 226 W. Liberty St., Sumter, SC 29150, or to a charity of one’s choice. Bullock Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CAROLINE G. LANGE

MANNING — Caroline Ganzel Lange, 65, wife of Reinhard Lange, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Mrs. Lange was born in Germany. She attended St. James Lutheran Church in Sumter and was a self-employed dressmaker. Survivors besides her husband of Manning include a son, Eric Lange of Parsippany, N.J.; a daughter, Karen Hunter of Roselle Park, N.J.; a brother, Mathias Ganzel of Germany; a sister, Friede Biebusch of Germany; and a grandchild. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. James Lutheran Church with the Rev. Tony Metze officiating. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
