ESTILL — Mary Jane McDonald “Jerry” Harper of 472 Fourth St., 82, widow of William Harper, died Monday afternoon, Sept. 25, 2000, at her home after an extended illness. Born Oct. 1, 1917, in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Paul Anderson McDonald and Mary Marshall McDonald. She was a retired school teacher and administrator at Estill High School from 1966 to 1986. She was a charter board member of the Hampton County Rural Health Foundation and was the author of the South Carolina Tri-Centennial Edition of “Both Sides of the Swamp” from Hampton County. She received the Star Teacher award for both Estill and Hampton County schools and was the first female elder of Estill Presbyterian Church. She was a former member of the South Carolina Basic Skills Advisory Commission and member and past president of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority. She was a graduate of Converse College and received her master’s degree from the University of South Carolina. Survivors include a son, William Harper Jr. of Estill; a daughter, Paula Harper Bethea of Hilton Head; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marshall Harper Foster. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. today in Lawtonville Cemetery in Estill with Dr. Frank Sells and the Rev. Leonard Brisendine officiating. The family will receive friends at the home until the hour of services. HEMINGWAY — Lillie Mae Powell, 69, widow of Willie James Powell, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000. Born in Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late Josh and Ida Brown. Mrs. Powell was a member of St. John Baptist Church. Survivors include five sons, Willie Joe Powell of Florida, Leroy Powell of Lake City, Trellis Powell, Randoff Powell and Johnny Powell, all of Hemingway; four daughters, Rosa Barr of Winston-Salem, N.C., Maxine Brown of Hemingway, Sylvia Naile of Vinegrove, Ky., and Patricia Powell of Austin, Texas; two brothers, Joel Brown of Philadelphia, Pa., and John Wesley Brown of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Sarah McCrea of Miami, Fla., and Winnie Mae Moore of Miami; 35 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John Baptist Church on Roper Cross Road, Lake City, with the Rev. Eugene Burgess officiating. Burial will be in Brown Cemetery. HOUSTON, Texas — Catherine B. Olsen, 94, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000. Born Feb. 10, 1906, in Madisonville, Texas, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Walton and Mable Morris Byers. Mrs. Olsen was a longtime member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and the Suzanna Wesley Sunday School Class and was a past president of the Houston A&M Mother’s Club. She was the widow of Oscar Leonard Olsen, to whom she was married for 56 years. Survivors include her children, Maj. Gen. Thomas R. Olsen, U.S. Air Force (Retired) of Sumter, S.C., and Kay Murff of Coral Gables, Fla.; her grandchildren, Lt. Col. T. Richard Olsen, USAF, Lisa Wesolick, Cheryl Amerine and Becky Holt; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Morris, Albert, Edward, Charles and James; and three sisters, Mary Lila Lynch, Claire Emmett and Maude Thomason. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Settegast-Kopf Co. Funeral Directors, 3320 Kirby Drive, with the Rev. Bill Stell officiating. Burial will be in Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery. Alex Goodman, 75, widower of Ethel Goodman, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at Mariner Health of Sumter East. Born March 5, 1925, in Marlboro County, he was a son of the late Huey and Laura Goodman. Born June 6, 1945, in Manning, S.C., he was a son of the late Carol “Cal” McLeod and Martha Abraham McLeod. Born Nov. 12, 1916, in the Camp Bob Cooper community of Clarendon County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Lawrence Felder and Ella Mack Felder. GREELEYVILLE — Lawrence Cantey Sr., 67, husband of Cloren Peterson Cantey, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence. Born Sept. 1, 1933, in Greeleyville, he was a son of the late Gus Cantey and Alena Hilton Cantey. Mr. Cantey attended Williamsburg County public schools and Williamsburg County Training School. He also attended Williamsburg Technical College, where he received a certificate in small engine repair. He was a member of Long Branch United Methodist Church, where he served as a member of the trustee board and as church treasurer. Survivors besides his wife of the home include two sons, Lawrence Cantey Jr. of Columbia and Sgt. Paul Levern Cantey of Manning; a daughter, Shirlren Brown of Greeleyville; a brother, James Cantey Sr. of Greeleyville; a sister, Pearline C. Simon of Florence; five grandchildren; a stepgrandson; and a step-great-grandson. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Long Branch United Methodist Church, Long Branch Road, Greeleyville, with the Rev. Edward McLeod, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. David R. Carrasco Sr., 45, husband of Cruz Martinez Carrasco, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 200, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in San Antonio, Texas, he was a son of the late Gilbert Carrasco and Dominga Ramirez Carrasco. Mr. Carrasco was employed by the South Carolina Department of Transportation. Survivors besides his wife of the home include two sons, David R. Carrasco Jr. and John Gilbert Carrasco, both of San Antonio, Texas; a daughter, Christina Hernandez of San Antonio; two stepsons, Jay Lopez of San Antonio and Joe Lopez of Sumter; three stepdaughters, Maria Haughton of Sumter and Amanda Lopez and Christina Garcia, both of San Antonio; four brothers, Gilbert Carrasco Jr., Daniel Carrasco, Joe Andrew Carrasco and Carlos Carrasco; three sisters, Helen Diaz, Yolanda Klebahn and Patricia Vasquez; 13 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. LYNCHBURG — Madison Tarrant Coleman Jr., 71, widower of Emma Springs Coleman, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Madison Tarrant and Leila Parnell Coleman. Mr. Coleman was a Korean War U.S. Army veteran. Before his retirement, he was employed with Campbell Soup Co. He was a member of the Lynchburg American Legion Post No. 140. Survivors include a son, Madison Tarrant (April) Coleman III of Swansea; two brothers, W.E. (Yoko) Coleman of Jacksonville, Fla., and Bobby (Ruby) Coleman of Augusta, Ga.; seven sisters, Remona (Ervin) Carraway, Betty (Harry) Hickman and Uldine Springs, all of Olanta, Polly Cook of Lake City, Mary Grace Price of Hope, Mich., Agnes (Richard) Carter of Florence and Ruby (Leon) Prescott of Sumter; and a grandson, Matt Coleman. MAYESVILLE — Juanita McLeod Edmondston, 85, widow of Robert Dorrill Edmondston, died today, Sept. 8, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Edmonston was a member of Mayesville Presbyterian Church and a former member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Mt. Pleasant. She was a retired dietician with the Medical University of South Carolina. Survivors include a daughter, Gladys Hayes and her husband, J.K. Hayes, of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, Harry McLeod of Texas and Earnest McLeod of Summerville; two grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and a special cousin, Mattie N. Ivey of Mayesville. ALCOLU — Thomas McCray, 66, husband of Sarah Ellen McFadden McCray, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter after an illness. Born Sept. 17, 1933, in the Alcolu community of Clarendon County, he was a son of Robert Culton and the late Louise McCray Darley and the stepson of Mary Virginia Culton and the late Willie Joe Darley. Mr. McCray attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he joined Jehovah Baptist Church and later joined Greenhill Baptist Church. He retired from Georgia Pacific of Alcolu in 1998 after 40 years of service. Survivors besides his wife of the home and his father and stepmother, Robert and Mary Virginia Culton of Charleston include a stepson, Lewis Player of Miami, Fla.; three brothers, Willie Darley of Alcolu, Bobby Darley of Atlanta, Ga., and Robert Culton Jr. of Charleston; and six sisters, Catherine Webb, Lula Darley, both of Manning, Elouise Darley of Alcolu, Mary Way of Paxville, Eartha L. Wilson of Palm Beach, Fla., and Norma C. Tartly of Virginia. He was preceded in death by a brother, Deacon Ned Darley Sr.; and a sister, Lillie Williams. Frederick Sanders of 1304 Blackwell Court died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born in Manhattan, N.Y., he was a son of Clifton and Hattie Richburg. Survivors besides his parents of Sumter include three brothers, the Rev. Ray Sanders and Richard Lyons, both of Columbia, and Donell Lyons of Bronx, N.Y.; and two sisters, Deloris Muhammad of Greenville and Crystal Richburg of Sumter. LYNCHBURG — Dean Solomon died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at Beard’s Residential Care in Timmonsville. Born Dec. 27, 1917, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Willie Solomon and Sarah Williams Solomon. Mr. Solomon was a member of Green Bay Baptist Church in Lynchburg. He attended Lee County public schools. He was employed as a laborer. He served in the U.S. Army from Jan. 6, 1941, to Sept. 4, 1943, as a private first class. He was first married to Alice McDonald of Lynchburg, and then to Hattie Jackson. Survivors include a son, Leroy Isaac of Orange, N.J.; a stepson, Alfred McDonald of Lynchburg; two brothers, Jessie Solomon of Lynchburg and Willie Solomon of Lamar; two sisters, Bertha Fortune and Margie Watson, both of Lynchburg; two grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren. TIMMONSVILLE — Mack Marion Vause of 351 W. Deer Road, 56, husband of Patricia Anderson Vause, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, in a Florence hospital. Born in Florence County, he was a son of Gladys McClam Vause and the late Keith Vause. Mr. Vause was a Vietnam War U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of Bethany Free Will Baptist Church, and he was the owner of J&M Vinyl Siding Co. S. HARTWELL SEGARS

LAMAR — Samuel Hartwell “Hart” Segars, 77, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at his home after an illness. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Samuel Edward and Jessie Windham Segars. Mr. Segars was a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from Sonoco Paper Products after 43 years of service. He was a member of the Old Timer’s Club of Sonoco and the VFW. He was also a member of Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church, where he served as steward and a member of the choir. Survivors include his wife, Mary Donna Parnell Segars of Lamar; a son, Carroll H. Segars of Hartsville; two daughters, Cindy Bladel and Marsha Odom, both of Hartsville; a stepson, Billy Fields of Hartsville; a sister, Vivian Boyle of Sumter; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church. Burial was in Lamar Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church, 1665 Philadelphia St., Darlington, SC 29532. Belk Funeral Home Inc., 229 W. Broad St., Darlington, was in charge of arrangements.

AMELIA C. MATTHEWS

PAXVILLE — H. Amelia Curtis Matthews, 92, widow of William C. Matthews, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Paxville, she was a daughter of the late George Henry Curtis and Sarah Frances Beach Curtis. Mrs. Matthews was a lifelong member of Paxville Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women and a Sunday school teacher. She attended Columbia College and the Tuomey School of Nursing. Mrs. Matthews was the owner and operator of Matthews Nursing Home. Survivors include two daughters, Sarah “Bootsie” Keith and Suzanne “Suzy” Funderburke, both of Paxville; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Beach Curtis. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. today in Paxville Cemetery with the Revs. Dick Broomall and Eugene Mosier officiating. Pallbearers were Glenn “Judge” Reynolds, Johnny Lewis, Harold Corbett, Julian Hynes, Billy Geddings, Jim Black, D.B. Andrews and Jimmy Boone. Memorials may be made to Paxville Methodist Church Building Fund. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

MARGARET R. SMITH

COLUMBIA — Margaret “Margie” Reamer Smith, 62, wife of John Hemby Smith Sr., died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late William Schell Reamer Jr. and Margaret Hamilton Reamer. Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Winthrop College and retired from James Carr Associates. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Survivors besides her husband include two sons, John Hemby Smith Jr. of Orangeburg and Robert Samuel Smith of Hartsville; two daughters, Susan Smith Adkins of Rock Hill and Trudie Smith Austin of Columbia; two brothers, William Schell Reamer III and James Cornelius Reamer, both of Columbia; a sister, Ida Reamer Carson of Columbia; and six grandchildren. A granddaughter preceded Mrs. Smith in death. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. today in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Bernardin Hospice House, 90 Finley Road, Columbia, SC 29203 or to a charity of one’s choice. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street chapel, was in charge of arrangements.

WALTER FLEMING SR.

TURBEVILLE — Walter “Red” Fleming Sr. died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence. Born Dec. 24, 1911, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Samuel Harrison and Itlean Fleming. In his youth, Mr. Fleming joined Hickory Grove Baptist Church and served as section leader of the church and was a member of the senior choir. He was a Mason and self-employed as a brick mason, carpenter, plumber and electrician. Survivors include three sons, Richard Brown of Marina, Calif., Walter Fleming Jr. of Kingstree and Eddie Myers of Turbeville; four daughters, Inetha Blount of Newport News, Va., Jenny L. Gamble of Lynchburg, Artis Wright of Florence and Cynthia Murphy of Charlotte, N.C.; six sisters, Ida Mae Harley of Philadelphia, Meda Williams and Mable Sandbury, both of Jamaica, N.Y., Noble Stevens of Little River, Pearl Harrison of Charleston and Sadie Rufus of Turbeville; four brothers, Robert Harrison, J.L. Harrison and Will Harrison, all of Turbeville, and George Harrison of Charleston; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. A son, Jackie Myers, preceded Mr. Fleming in death. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Hickory Grove Baptist Church with Elder Zander Davis, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Oliver Davis, L. Wheeler and C. Murphy. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Eddie Myers, Gibbons Road. Samuels Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

ARIZONA R. FURMAN

COLUMBIA — Arizona Richardson P. Furman, widow of George Furman and Aaron Pack, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, at Providence Hospital. Born Sept. 20, 1909, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Eliza Jane Campbell Richardson. Mrs. Furman was a member of Pentecostal Apostolic Church. Survivors include four sons, the Rev. George Furman of Sumter, Richard Furman of Columbia, Elder Henry Furman of Wedgefield and James Pack of Phoenix, Ariz.; three daughters, Eliza Smith of Sumter, Ann Parsons of New York and Janie Greene of Las Vegas; 48 grandchildren. A son, Horace Furman, and a daughter, Susan Furman, both preceded Mrs. Furman in death. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at The First United Pentecostal Church, Plowden Mill Road at Stokes Street, with Bro. Theron Smith, pastor, officiating, assisted by Elder Henry Furman, the Rev. George Furman and Pastor Gregory Cunningham. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home of the Rev. and Mrs. George Furman, 34 W. Patricia Drive, Sumter. Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.
