DEMPSEY M. WEAVER

SUMMERTON — Dempsey Marvin Weaver, 91, of Route 2, Box 1352, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta, Ga. Born June 30, 1908, in Rocky Mount, N.C., he was a son of the late Dempsey Weaver and Elizabeth C. Weaver. Mr. Weaver was a retired U.S. Navy veteran with 30 years service. Survivors include a daughter, Frances Williamson and her husband, Harold Williamson, of Augusta; an adopted daughter, Susan B. Goodwin of Rowesville; a brother, David Weaver of North Carolina; two sisters, Lena Stuart and Hazel Turlin, both of North Carolina; and two grandchildren, Chris and Melisia Hughes. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Park Cemetery in Orangeburg with the Rev. Chuck Wells officiating. Thompson Funeral Home Inc. in Orangeburg was in charge of arrangements.

JUANZELL CAMPBELL

Juanzell Campbell died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at her home. Born in New York, N.Y., she was a daughter of Isaac and Dorothy Patterson Campbell.
The family will receive friends at 120 Annie Court in Dalzell.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

HARRY TANNER

Harry Tanner Jr., 70, husband of Lila Pipkin Tanner, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Webster Springs, W. Va., he was a son of the late Harry Hobson Tanner and the late Stella Baird Tanner. Mr. Tanner was a member of the Sumter Freewill Baptist Church of the Pentecostal Faith and was retired form Skyline Manufacturing Co. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include two sons, Harry “Jim” Tanner III and John Roger Tanner, both of Sumter; a daughter, Terry Lee Melton of Sumter; two sisters, Margaret Tanner and Betty Jean Suppa of West Virginia; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Tanner and Robert Tanner; and a sister, Lucille Pastorial. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Revs. Alvin Cooper and Larry Melton officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Jordon, Jerry Casselman, Patrick Pipkin, Tony Pipkin, Ricky Pipkin and Chris Pipkin. Honorary pallbearers will be Claude Hendrix, the Rev. HATTIE MAE DUKE

MANNING — Hattie Mae Gamble Duke, 79, wife of Cleborn Earold Duke, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at her home. Born July 29, 1920, in Turbeville, she was a daughter of Joseph Wells Gamble and Mary Plowden Gamble. She was a retired secretary from the South Carolina Highway Department and a member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church. Survivors besides her husband of Manning include two sons, Cleborn Earold Duke Jr. of Manning and David J. Duke of Columbia; two daughters, Annette Corbett of Pinewood and Zeline Davis of Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, Joseph W. Gamble of Bamberg; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at New Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Charlie Tyler officiating. Burial will in Clarendon Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be David J. Duke Jr., Carl Corbett, Skip Davis, Clyde Wilkes Jr., David Duke Jr. and Scott Duke Jr. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and at other times at the residence, Route 8, Box 50 in Manning. MRS. ERMINE S. PRITCHER

HOLLY HILL — Ermine Stoudemire Pritcher, 85, widow of Robert L. “Rob” Pritcher, died Friday morning at her home. Born April 21, 1914, in Holly Hill, she was a daughter of the late John A. Stoudemire and Carrie S. Stoudemire. She was a member of Corinth Baptist Church and a graduate of Holly Hill High School. Survivors include three sons, Bobby Pritcher of Terre Haute, Ind., Gerald Pritcher of Holly Hill and Larry Pritcher of Summerton; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Corinth Baptist Church near Holly Hill with the Revs. Michael Doane and Andy Burk officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. INFANT MADISON BROWN-WALKER

Madison Gracie Brown-Walker died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 8, 2000, she was a daughter of Jermaine Walker and Pamela Brown. Survivors besides her parents include a brother, Braylan D. Walker; a sister, Morgan Denise Brown-Walker, maternal grandparents Gracie Brown of Rimini and Charles Brown of Jamaica, N.Y.; paternal grandparents, the Rev. James W. Walker and Susan Walker, both of Sumter; and two maternal great-grandmothers, Eva Johnson of Sumter and Christina Brown of Charleston; Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Bradford Cemetery with the Rev. Isaac Johnson officiating. Burial will be held in Bradford Cemetery.

ROLAND RHAMES

KEYSVILLE, Va. — Roland Rhames, 82, husband of Theresa Williams Rhames, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at his home. Born March 21, 1917, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Allie and Agnes Bosier Rhames. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, he accepted Christ and joined the Calvary Baptist Church in Pinewood. Twice married, first to the late Irene Wells and later to Theresa Williams, he moved to New York during his youth and worked at the Artrey Label Printing Company and was a taxi driver. While residing in New York, he joined the Covent Avenue Baptist Church, where he served as an usher and was a member of the Sunday school class. He was a member of the New York Masonic Lodge. He renewed his membership at Calvary Baptist Church upon returning to Pinewood, where he was ordained as a deacon and was a member of the Minister, Deacon and Wives Alliances. Mr. Rhames lived in Keysville, Va., during fall and winter and attended the Antioch Baptist Church. Survivors besides his wife include two daughters, Irene R. King of Cambria Heights, N.Y., and Alberta G. Stevenson; a stepson, Everett A. Joyner; six sisters, Henrietta, Roberta, Meta, Louise, Pinkney, Sally and Dora; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters: Ida, Mamie, Allen, James, Chermy and O Neal. Wake services will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. today. Funeral services will held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. D.L. Grant officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. OLANTA — Hillard Turner Rush, 99, widower of Elvira McMillan Rush, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at Ron McNair Nursing Center in Lake City.
Born Nov. 12, 1900, in Florence County, he was a son of the late Turner Rush Sr. and Louise McFadden Rush.
The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Gabriel Hammonds, 210 Quinby Circle South, Florence, and at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Carlia and Fannie Rush, Route 1, Box 292, Dubose Road, Olanta.

Maj. Claudia Anne Viller Twohig, 43, wife of Lt. Col. Thomas F. Twohig, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at her home following an illness.

Verda Enlow, 77, widow of Banks Enlow, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at a local nursing center. Born in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late Leland F. Kinard and the late Roberta Sligh Kinard. Mrs. Enlow was retired from Pioneer Ltd. Survivors include a sister, Bonnelle Davis of Georgia; a sister-in-law, Wilma Kinard of Newberry; a grandson, Jason Hairl of Sumter; and two great-grandchildren, Brandon Hairl and Savannah Hairl. Alma Dell McDaniel, wife of Edward McDaniel, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Dec. 25, 1929, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Ashby and Hattie Murray Brisbon. She was a member of Spring Hill U.M.C. Survivors besides her husband include six sons, Edward C. McDaniel, James M. McDaniel, Arthur McDaniel and Lorenzo McDaniel, all of Dalzell, and William Jenkins and Leroy McDaniel, both of Rembert; three daughters, Betty McDaniel and Dorothy Dow, both of Dalzell, and Bernice M. Bolden of Elgin; one brother; four sisters, Edna Joe and Janie Jamison, both of Philadelphia, Inez Chester of Fort Pierre, Fla, and Sadie Frances Stuckey of Rembert; two step-sons, Josh Alston of Dalzell and Robert Jenkins of Rembert; one step-daughter, Lenora Holder; 26 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. LAKE CITY — Judy Ann Rogers, 52, wife of Ervin Rogers, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at her home. Born in Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late Harmon Kelly Coker and Odell Lucille Floyd Coker. Mrs. Rogers was an employee of Florence County District 3 Schools, where she worked in the cafeteria. She attended Floyd Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors besides her husband of Lake City include a son, Casey Ervin Rogers of Lake City; two brothers, Kelly Coker and Hoyt Coker, both of Lake City; five sisters, Annette McKenzie, Rheba Welch and Elsie McKenzie, all of Lake City, Denise Frye of Sumter and Brenda Carroway of Florence; and a special life-long friend, Barbara Jean McAllister of Scranton. Newborn Ja’;aya Nikeria Spears died Tuesday Feb. 1, 2000. Born Feb. 1, 2000, she was a daughter of Barbara L. Mickens and Jamel A. Spears. Survivors include two grandmothers, Lener Winn of Rembert and Geneva Spears of Sumter; two grandfathers, Melvin Miller of Horatio and John Lee Harvin of Mississippi; two great-grandmothers, Fannie Mickens of Rembert and Aline Spears of Sumter; a step-great-grandmother, Sarah Mickens of Rembert; two great-grandfathers, Simon Mickens of Rembert and Johnnie Spears of Sumter; an aunt, Shanta Williams of Sumter; and three uncles, George Winn and Samuel Winn, both of Sumter, and Herbert Bryd of Sumter. HARMON NEELIUS TURNER

Harmon Neelius Turner, 90, husband of Madge Kolb Turner, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at a local nursing center. Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Stubbs Arthur Turner and the late Melissa Jane Hudson Turner. Mr. Turner was first married to the late Lottie May Brewer. He was the second person to receive a South Carolina Driver’s License. He was retired from the S.C. Commission of Forestry with 47 years of service, and he was also a retired farmer. Survivors besides his wife include four sons, Claude T. Turner, Raymond O. Turner, Troy D. Turner and Charles L. Turner, all of Sumter; four daughters, Edna Mae Stegner, Daisy R. Kirkpatrick and Lucille Austin, all of Sumter, and Rebecca Ann Burke of Hookerton, N.C.; two step-sons, Ernest Lawrence and Robert Lawrence, both of Atlanta; two step-daughters, Lois Caughman of Sumter and Jeanette Lawrence of Oak Island, N.C.; 25 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Harmon C. Turner and Richard H. Turner; a daughter, Berlether Turner; three brothers, Jervey Turner, Clifton Turner and Graham “Dock” Turner; and three sisters, Emma Turner Griffin, Clara Turner Geddings and Eula Turner Avins. MANNING — Annie “Alee” Cutter Richburg, 79, widow of Joseph Allen Richburg, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at her home in Manning. Born May 14, 1920, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Charles “Hun” Cutter and Nealy DuBose Cutter. Mrs. Richburg was a Baptist. Survivors include a son, Joseph Arnold Richburg of Hanahan; four daughters, LeGay Elmore of Bishopville, Patsy Eaddy of Greeleyville, Gail Richburg of Sumter and Donna Martin of Summerton; 12 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. today at at Rehobeth Cemetery with the Revs. Leroy Burke and Charlie Tyler officiating. Birnis “Bernie” McKnight Sr., widower of Sennie Frierson McKnight, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000. Born March 16, 1923, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Tom and Hattie McKnight. Mr. McKnight was educated in the Clarendon County schools. He joined Mount Nebo Baptist Church at an early age. Later he moved to Norwalk, Conn., and attended Saint James Missionary Baptist Church. After retiring from the Metro North Railroad, he moved back to Sumter and joined Salem Baptist Church. Survivors include three sons, Davis Harvin of Sumter, Birnis McKnight Jr. of Tulsa, Okla. and Clifton McKnight of Decatur, Ga.; two daughters, Rosa Lee Harvin of Stratford, Conn., and Betty Davis of Bronx, N.Y.; 27 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Samuel McKnight and Thomas Washington. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Salem Baptist Church in Sumter with the Rev. T.O. Everett officiating. REV. NOISBY HILTON SR.

SUMMERTON — The Rev. Noisby Hilton Sr., 79, widower of Lease Roberts Hilton, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Born April 14, 1920, in the Camp Bob Cooper section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Albertus Hilton and Pheobe Lemon Miller Hilton. Mr. Hilton received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he joined the Mount Zion AME church. After being called into the ministry, he pastored throughout the Manning and Wateree districts of the Central Conference for more than 50 years. Survivors include two sons, Noisby Hilton Jr. of Manning, and Lt. Col. Clarence Hilton of Atlanta; six daughters, Celesline Speace, Artrell Washington and Alfreda Cooper, all of Manning, Alberta Lawsona and Thomisena Davis, both of Baton Rouge, La., and Elma Ruth Moody of Stone Mountain, Ga.; 19 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence Hilton and Lee Miller; and one sister, Annie Mae Ballard. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Mount Zion AME Church, Camp Bob Cooper Road, Summerton, with the Rev. Manuel Fogle officiating and elder B.P. Boston, Revs. Rufus Gaymon and Earnest Brown assisting. The body will be placed in the church at 12:30 p.m. Honorary pallbearers will be ministers of the Central Conference. JOHN H. LENEAU JR

John Henry Leneau Jr., husband of Cleola Andrews Leneau, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Elease Johnson and John Henry Leneau Sr.
The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mary L. and Kingmon Ford, 1120 Pulpit St.

DR. JOHN M. BEVAN

Dr. John Morgan Bevan was born Dec. 5, 1924, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and was the son of William and Elizabeth Bevan. He received his AB from Franklin and Marshall College and his BD, M.A. and Ph.D degrees from Duke University. In addition, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science and the Doctor of Law degrees. He married Louise Dabbs of Mayesville in 1946. Dr. Bevan was the founding academic vice president of Florida Presbyterian College (later named Eckerd College) and served in similar capacities at the College of Charleston, Davidson College in Davidson, N.C., and the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif. Prior to moving into administration, he had been a professor at Heidelberg College, Davidson College and Duke University. Dr. Bevan served as the executive director of the Charleston Higher Education Consortium and as an adjunct professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, School of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina prior to his retirement in 1986. Dr. Bevan is remembered for his innovative approaches to education and his dynamic oratory. He developed the first 4-1-4 programs, the first undergraduate Teacher Corps Program and one of the three initial Upward Bound Programs. He developed the Governor’s School of South Carolina and the South Carolina Professional Development Program for Science and Mathematics Teachers. He traveled extensively in Asia and helped develop academic programs in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and India. After retiring, Dr. Bevan became a member of the Board of Trustees of Thornwell Home and School for Children, a member of the Executive Committee of the South Carolina Committee for Humanities, a member of the Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity and Covenant House, a member of the Sumter Rotary and Fortnightly clubs, as well as the Cosmos Club of Washington, D.C. Recently, he was recognized by alumni at Eckerd College by having the faculty lounge named in his honor and the John M. Bevan Scholarship established. He was a member and elder and had served as Clerk of Session at Salem Black River Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Louise Dabbs Bevan of the Salem Black River Community; four children, Brenda Remmes of the Salem Black River Community, Elizabeth Bevan of Charlotte, John Bevan Jr. of Paris and Megan Bevan of Washington, D.C.; six grandchildren; and three brothers. Funeral services are scheduled for 4 p.m. on Sunday at Salem Black River Church. Memorials may be made to the Salem Black River Presbyterian Church & Cemetery in care of Eugene Dabbs, 709 Fawn Circle, Sumter, SC 29150. WILLIE GOLDEN

Willie “Bill” Golden, husband of Omega M. Golden, died Feb. 1, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born March 22, 1943, in Sumter, he was a son of the late James and Clara Mae Sweatt Golden. Mr. Golden was a lifelong member of Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, where he attended regularly until his health failed. He was a faithful and loyal member of the male chorus and served in any capacity he could to uplift and serve his Savior. He attended Lincoln High School and received his training for plumber and pipe layer from Daniels International, where he was also employed for a number of years. He was later employed by Yeargin Construction, the federal government and several local construction companies. In recent years he was a self-employed plumber in the Sumter community. Survivors besides his wife include five sons, Tracy Allen of Colorado Springs, Colo., William Allen, Willie Golden and Michael Golden, all of Sumter, and Aldwynne Dyer of Columbia; seven daughters, Clarissa White of Manning, Williette Siegler, Angela Allen, Winifier Dyer and Williciia Golden, all of Sumter, Tamega Nelson of Myrtle Beach and a number of other children he was instrumental in helping raise as his own; six brothers, James Golden Jr., Alphonso Golden and Matthew Golden, all of Sumter, Heyward Golden of Columbia and James Wright and Harold Green, both of Winston-Salem, N.C.; four sisters, Hattie Guinyard and Juliette Anderson, both of Sumter, Mary Armstrong of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Angie Cherry of Jersey City, N.J.; and 21 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Baptist Missionary Church with the Rev. Larry C. Weston officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. BERNARD R. HOLLEY

SURFSIDE BEACH — Bernard Ray Holley, 75, husband of Margaret Boykin Holley, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. Born Dec. 28, 1924, in Johnston County, N.C., he was a son of the late John and Lettie Smith Holley. Mr. Holley was a Army veteran of 28 years, serving in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was the owner and operator of the Shrimp Boat Restaurant in Sumter and worked in food services at Ocean Lakes Campground for 14 years. He was a member of Garden City Baptist Church. Survivors besides his wife include a son, Raymond Holley of Missouri; a brother, John Holley of Moncks Corner; five sisters, Jewell Manning of Coats, N.C., Elva Gray Leaird and Erma Mason, both of Lillington, N.C., Marjorie Wood of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Louise Strickland of Martinez, Ga.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Inez Knight and Mozelle Pippin. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel, Murrells Inlet. Burial, with full military honors, will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, Sumter. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Garden City Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1417, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576 or the charity of one’s choice.
