John H. Gates Sr.

Aug. 29, 1920 - Aug. 16, 2004

ANDERSON - John Hennessy Gates Sr., 83, of 308 Woodfern Circle, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004 at his residence.

Born in Anderson, he was the retired owner and operator of Gates Firestone of Anderson. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a member of the Elks Lodge, VPO#12006. He served on the Board of Directors at the Anderson Fair Grounds and the Anderson Civic Center. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he served in many capacities.

Surviving are widow, Dorothy Curko Gates of the home; sons, John H. Gates Jr., Christopher Gates and Greg Gates, all of Anderson; daughters, Susan Gates Moon of Anderson and Mary Elizabeth Gates of Monterey, Calif.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was the son of the late William Franklin Gates Sr. and Delia Hennessy Gates. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Mitchell Gates; and a brother, William F. Gates Jr.

Services are at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church by Father James Dubrioullet; burial in New Silverbrook Cemetery, Anderson. The body is at The McDougald Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. A Rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m.

The family will be at the residence.

Kenica 'Von' Richardson

May 25, 1977 - Aug. 14, 2004

BELTON - Kenica Chavon Richardson, 27, of 105 Julian Drive, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004 at Anderson Area Medical Center.

Born in Anderson County, she was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church. She had attended Palmetto High School in Williamston and was employed at Kentucky Fried Chicken as a cashier.

Surviving are sons, Vonterious De'Andre' Richardson and Bricedric Seyvon Marshall, both of the home; daughter, Jasmyn Charvon Turner of the home; mother, Mattie Lou Blanding of the home; father, Kenneth Mack of Anderson; stepfather, Bobby Ray Blanding of Williamston; brothers, Bobby DeMario Blanding of Williamston and Gunther Mack of Anderson; sister, Kendra Mack of Williamston; grandmothers, Evelyn Richardson of Williamston and Mary Hightower of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and great-grandmother, Earline Mack of Anderson.

Services are at 3 p.m. Wednesday at New Prospect Baptist Church, Williamston, by the Rev. N.P. Pearson and Jacqueline Williams; burial in the church cemetery. The body is at D.B. Walker Funeral Home, 311 Cleveland Avenue, Anderson and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday. No wake is planned.

The family is at the home of her grandmother, Evelyn Richardson, 104 Tripp St., Williamston.

Mary Jane Powell McDuffie

ABBEVILLE - Mary Jane McDuffie, 52, of Apt. 804 Cambridge St., died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center.

Born in Abbeville County, she was a member of Campfield Baptist Church and a 1970 graduate of J.S. Wright High School.

Surviving are widower, Archie McDuffie of Abbeville; brother, Calvin Wilson of Anderson; and sisters, Amanda Belton of Anderson, Emma Power and Patricia Williams, both of Abbeville.

She was the daughter of the late Willie and Emma Jean Starks Powell.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Brown and Walker Funeral Home.

The family is at the home of her sister, Emma Powell, 203 Richey St., Abbeville.

Nettie Foster

PENDLETON - Nettie Wilson Foster, 75, died Sunday, August 15, 2004 at Anderson Medical Center. A native of Pendleton, she was the daughter of the late James Truman and Ila Mae Kay Wilson. She retired from J.P. Stevens and was a life long member and Sunday school teacher at Bishop Branch Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking, reading, and spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include: son, David Michael Foster of Donalds, SC; daughter, Cindy Foster Ridley of Sylva, NC; brothers, William A. "Tootsie" Wilson and Harold Kay Wilson both of Pendleton, SC, D.B. Wilson of Berea, SC; grandchildren, David and Krissy Foster of Anderson, SC, Matthew Ridley of Sylva, NC; and two nieces raised in the home, Mandy Wilson Wright of Pendleton, SC and Dr. Lee Dorsch of Waterford, VA. She was predeceased by one brother and two sisters.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at 2pm at Bishop Branch Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Luther Price. Visitation will be 7-9pm. Tuesday at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family is at the home of Mandy and Paul Wright, 2225 Old Greenville Hwy, Pendleton, SC.

Ollie S. Cox

April 29, 1933 - Aug. 15, 2004

ANDERSON - Ollie Mae Smith Cox, 71, of 502 Hillside Drive, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004 at her residence.

Born in Toccoa, Ga., she was a retired employee of Stop N' Go Store and was a Baptist.

Surviving are daughters, Sandra Bleckley and Debbie Moore, both of Anderson and Judy Malko of Piscataway, N.J.; sons, Gary Wayne Cox and Steven Mark Cox, both of Anderson; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of Carl Eugene Cox and the daughter of the late Jasper Milligan and Leona Watson Smith. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Carlene Cox; a son, James Ray Cox; and one great-grandchild. She was also preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters.

Services are at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Downtown Chapel, by the Rev. David Neal; burial will be in the Clearmont Baptist Church cemetery, Westminster. The body is at the Downtown Chapel, 401 North Main St., where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The family is at the residence.

Pearl Wall

FOREST CITY, N.C. - Pearl Sane Wall, 82, of 179 Circus Trail, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004 at Rutherford Hospital.

A native of Rutherford County, she was a homemaker and member of Henrietta First Baptist Church.

Surviving are son, Jim Wall of Seneca; daughters, Sandra Arrowood, Brenda Wall, Judy Smith and Lisa Wall, all of Forest City, N.C. and Wanda Bland of Spindale, N.C.; brother, Bill Sane of Fallston, N.C.; sisters, Blanche Ruff of Forest City, N.C., Margaret Hollifield of Bostic, N.C., Jackie Davis of Lexington, N.C. and Josephine Padgett of Asheville, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of Bate Wall and the daughter of the late Fonzy B. and Minnie Smith Sane. She was preceded in death by a son, Spencer Wall; and brothers, John and Luke Sane; and a sister, Beth Henson.

Services are at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Harrelson Funeral Home by the Revs. Greg Hathaway, Roy Byers and Howard Lee Wall; burial in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Harrelson Funeral Home.

SFC Robert L. Mabry, Sr.

November 1, 1931 - August 15, 2004

ABBEVILLE - SFC Robert L. Mabry, Sr., US Army, RET. of 618 Old Calhoun Falls Road, passed away Sunday, August 15, 2004 at his home in Abbeville.

Born November 1, 1931 in Ware Shoals, SC, he was the son of the late Ralph Mabrey and Fannie Mae Mabrey Martin. He was survived by his wife, Kathleen Horton Mabry; four children- a daughter and her husband, Kathy M. Hall and John Speed Hall, Sr., a daughter and her husband, Robbie M. Brown and Wayne L. "Scooter" Brown, a daughter, Rhonda M. Hesson, and a son and his wife, Robert L. "Bobby" Mabry, Jr. and Kimberly Suggs Mabry; thirteen grandchildren- John Speed Hall, Jr., Jammie S. Hall, Jeremy W. Brown and his wife, Carol Berrios Brown, Haley K. Brown, Troy L. Brown, and Casey C. Brown, Daniel L. Hesson and Jessica LaCons Hesson, Robert Bradley "Brad" Hesson, Krystal D. Land, Drake A. Mabry, Savannah L. Mabry, Gabriel M. Mabry, and Katelyn R. Mabry; two great grandchildren- Andrew L. Long and Kaleb L. Hesson, all of Abbeville; a brother and his wife, Ted Mabrey and Pat C. Mabrey, a sister and her husband, Clyde Cooper, of Greenwood; a half-brother, Donnie Martin, and two half-sisters, Joyce M. Thompson and Betty M. Long of Abbeville. He was predeceased by a half-brother, Robert L. "Bobby" Martin.

He was retired from the U.S. Army after 23 years of active service. He was a Korean Conflict veteran and was recipient of the Korean Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, United Nations Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. He was also a Vietnam War Veteran with two tours of duty and was recipient of the Vietnam Service Medal with Silver Service Star, Combat Infantryman Badge, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal with Bronze Clasp and 4 Loops, Army Commendation Medal, and numerous achievement awards and certificates of appreciation. He was also retired from the SC Department of Corrections. He served for fifteen years as Elder of Union Presbyterian Church, was a member of the Hometown Baptist Church, the Korean War Veterans Association, the National Coalition of Retired Veterans, the Non-Commissioned Officers Association, the SC Law Enforcement Officers Association, and the NRA.

The family will receive friends 6:00PM to 8:00PM, Tuesday, August 17, 2004 at Harris Funeral Home. Services will be held 3:00PM, Wednesday, August 18, 2004 in the funeral home. His son, Robert L. "Bobby" Mabry, Jr. will conduct the service. Burial with full military honors will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens on Highway 72 West, Abbeville.

The family is at the home at 618 Old Calhoun Falls Road, Abbeville.

William Teasley

William Teasley, 31, of 119 W. Roosevelt Drive, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Willie Mae Smith

Dec. 20, 1915 - Aug. 11, 2004

SENECA - Willie Mae Sims Campbell Smith, of Seneca, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004 at the Hospice House of the Upstate in Anderson.

Born in Oconee County, she was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Women's Missionary, Senior Choir, Golden Outreach and the Homemakers Club.

She also created the Junior Church Organization and the BYPU for youth at the church.

She attended Oconee County Training School from 1925 to 1935 and was valedictorian of her graduating class. She later attended Benedict College from 1941 to 1944, where she received a Bachelors degree.

She was retired from teaching at several schools, including East End Elementary School, Blue Ridge High School and Seneca High School. She was a retired employee of Sears in Cincinnati, Ohio. She lived in Seneca from birth until 1971 and moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where she lived for 16 years. She returned to Seneca in October 1986.

Surviving are stepchildren, Marge Smith James, Betty Jean Smith Dance, Joyce Smith Hall and Donna Jean Riley; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was the daughter of the late Racine Mitchell and Nannie Sims.

Services are at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Seneca. Visitation will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Johnson Funeral Home of Seneca is in charge of arrangements.

Alvin Davis

BELTON -- Alvin C. Davis, 76, of 610 Mayfield School Road died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at his home.

Born in Greenwood County, he was retired from Tribble Construction and was a 16-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served during WWII and the Korean conflict. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and the D.A.V. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife, Bessie Clark Davis of the home; sons, Steve Davis of Williamston, Lynn Davis of Simpsonville and Bobby Davis of Belton; daughters, Libby Brown of Belton, Cathy Davis of Pelzer, and Mary Haynes of Williamston; stepson, Edrew Brown of Belton; brother, Douglas Davis of Fort Valley, Calif.; sister, Willie Mae Garrett of Honea Path; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was a son of the late Luther Nimrod and Bennie Viola Fisher Davis.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pruitt Funeral Home with the Revs. Dennis Barden, Mike Looney and Stanley Fuller officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories. The body is at the funeral home, where visitation will be from 4 until 6 p.m. Friday. The family is at the home.

Beth Ann Klosky

Sept. 30, 1912 -- Sept. 5, 2004

ANDERSON - Elizabeth Wiles "Beth Ann" Klosky, 91, of Columbia, formerly of Anderson, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004.

Born in Honea Path, she was known as "The Anderson County Historian." She authored several books including "Six Miles That Changed the Course of the South," "The Pendleton Legacy," and "Daring Venture." She was a journalist and newspaper editor associated with several newspapers including The Anderson Independent-Daily Mail, The Anderson Free Press and The Greenville Observer. She also served as a correspondent for The Greenville News and The State. She later became a regular contributor to Sandlapper Magazine and South Carolina History Illustrated. She initiated the commemoration for the Electric City Centennial of Anderson County. She was past president for both the Anderson County Historical Society and of Anderson Heritage. She was instrumental in founding the Anderson County Museum. She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Ann E. Allen of Columbia; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of James Anthony Klosky and the daughter of the late William Asbury and Etta Adams Wiles. She was preceded in death by sons, James Michael Klosky and Richard Ford Klosky; and a sister, Vivian Ann Wiles.

Graveside services will be held at 2 P.M. Saturday at New Silver Brook Cemetery conducted by Dr. David J. Bailey. Sullivan-King Mortuary, Downtown Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

C. J. Moss, Jr.

Aug. 10, 1926 -- Sept. 8, 2004

SPARTANBURG, SC - Clarence Jackson "C. J." Moss, Jr., 78, of 652 Overhill Drive, died Wednesday, September 8, 2004, at the home of his daughter in Emory, VA. Born August 10, 1926, in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late Clarence Jackson Moss, Sr. and Cora Pearl Rhinehart Moss. A graduate of Central Wesleyan College, he attended Cecil's Business College and retired from Hoechst Fibers. He was a member of Mitchell Memorial Wesleyan Church and was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include his wife, Ina Louise Childs Moss of the home; a son, C. J. "Jay" Moss, III and his wife Lori of Hartwell, GA; a daughter, Susan Moss Stanley and her husband Dr. Talmage Stanley of Emory, VA; five grandchildren, David Jackson Stanley, Sarah Apperson Stanley, Jayden Timothy Moss, Cassie Michelle Moss, and Callie Maria Moss; a sister, Huldah Ann Moss Jackson and her husband Mack of Laurens, SC; three brothers-in-law, Bill Crenshaw and Clyde A. Rich, both of Spartanburg, SC, and Clyde E. Bagwell of Taylors, SC; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Janet Melody Moss; three brothers, James Moss, Robert Moss, and Rufus Moss; and four sisters, Corrine Moss Bagwell, Ida Moss Crenshaw, Florence Moss, and Edna Moss Rich.

Visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m. Friday, September 10, 2004, at Floyd's North Church Street Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 11, 2004, at Floyd's North Church Street Chapel. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Southern Wesleyan University, 907 Wesleyan Drive, Central, SC 29630; to Hephzibah Children's Home, 6601 Zebulon Road, Macon, GA 31220-7606; or to Interim Hospice, 775 Spartan Boulevard, Suite 101, Spartanburg, SC 29301.
