Robert Jennings Parker Sr.

MARION, N.C. — Mr. Robert Jennings Parker, Sr., age 73, of Marion, died Sunday, April 3, 2005, in The McDowell Hospital. Born in McDowell County on March 24, 1932, he was a son of the late Mark and Nora Ann Hussman Parker. He was a member of Vein Mountain Baptist Church. He was a retired construction manager, U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War, and he was also a member of the order of Free Masonry. His wife, Pat Wellborn Parker, preceded him in death.

Surviving Mr. Parker is a son, Jennings Parker and wife Belinda of Little Mountain, SC; two grandchildren, Joshua and Zachary; two sisters, Jessie Sparks of Marion and Juanita McPeters of Old Fort. A special friend, Gladys Silver of Old Fort, also survives him.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. at Vein Mountain Baptist Church with Rev. Barry Gouge officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, at the church. Interment will be in Vein Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Army from Fort Bragg, N.C. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to American Heart Association, NC Affiliate-Region 1, 50 S. French Broad St., Asheville, NC 28801 or Vein Mountain Baptist Church, 288 Maple Avenue, Marion NC 28752. Westmoreland Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

W. William Sanders

LEXINGTON — Services for Walter William “Bill” Sanders, 56, of Lexington, will be held at 1pm Wednesday in the Chapel of Hope, Southland Memorial Gardens, officiated by Rev. Donald P. Davis. Entombment and military rites will follow. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Tuesday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or to Trinity Baptist Church.

Mr. Sanders died Saturday, April 2, 2005. Born in Monterey, CA, he was the son of the late Maj. Walter W. Sanders, Sr. and Helen Cecillo Sanders. Throughout his youth, he attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and was a student at St. Joseph’s Elementary School. Mr. Sanders was a six-year veteran of the United States Navy. His duty included service on the USS Orleck from June 1969 to March 1971 during the Vietnam War. He was a 1975 graduate of the University of South Carolina. Mr. Sanders attended Trinity Baptist Church and had been employed with the Social Security Administration in Columbia for the past 31 years. Additionally, he was a member of AFGE and VFW.

Surviving are his wife of 25 years, Sylvia Smith Sanders of Lexington; step-daughters, Sherry Griffis Hudson and Melissa Griffis Smith, both of Lexington; step-son, Edward W. Griffis, Jr. of West Columbia; brothers, Michael Sanders of Madison, MS, Harry Sanders of Aztec, NM; grandchildren, Kenneth Wayne Eck, Jennifer N. Smith, and Robert A. Windham; great grandchild; Colin Jason; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mary L. Roach

GASTON — Services for Mary Louise Roach, 62, will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at Westside Holiness Church with interment to follow in Gibson Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Jewel Jeffcoat. Visitation will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at Westside Holiness Church. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel is in charge.

Mrs. Roach died Sunday, April 3, 2005. Born August 31, 1942, in Columbia, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Chalmers Belk and Haley Bush Owens.

She is survived by her husband, Arthur E. Roach of Lexington; son, Richard G. Roach of Gaston; daughters, Tammy L. Roach of West Columbia, Patricia D. Roach of Gaston; son, Danny E. Roach of Gaston; sister, April Spieght of Swansea, Belma Lee of West Columbia; brother, Chuck Owens of West Columbia; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be missed.

Dan Biggs

COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Mr. Dan Biggs, 83, of Columbia, will be held 11 o’clock Thursday morning, April 7, 2005, at Northeast Presbyterian Church with The Reverend Dr. George D. Crow, III officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7:30 o’clock this (Wednesday) evening at Shives Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers will be Mr. Biggs’ grandsons and long-time employee, John Morant. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Executive’s Association of Greater Columbia. Memorials may be made to Northeast Presbyterian Church, 601 Polo Road, Columbia, SC 29223, The Foundation of Geriatric Education (TFGE), c/o National Healthcare, 7601 Parklane Road, Columbia, SC 29223

Mr. Biggs died Monday, April 4, 2005. Born in Green Pond, S.C., he was a son of the late Joseph Hinson, Sr., and Annie Mae Easterlin Biggs.

Before enlisting in the U.S. Army, he met and married the late Ella Euphola Bagley, to whom he was married for 52 years. He was a U.S. Army Airborne Ranger serving in WWII. He was the oldest active member and past President of Executive’s Association of Greater Columbia, where he also served on the Board of Directors. He was a member and Past Master of Arcadia Lodge #98. Mr. Biggs was a member of Northeast Presbyterian Church and the Sunshine Sunday School Class.

Survivors include his daughters, Joy Biggs Hill and husband Mike of North Myrtle Beach, and Susan Biggs Walsh and husband Gary of Northeast Columbia; son, Joseph Hinson Biggs of Columbia; grandchildren, Celeste Biggs McConkey of Atlanta, GA, Jennifer Biggs of Columbia, Jan Smith and husband David of Blythewood, Jimbo Mishoe, Jr. and his wife, Jenn of Charlotte, N.C., Dr. Warren Walsh and wife Elisa of Northeast Columbia, Jeff Walsh of Orangeburg, Brian Biggs of Columbia, S.C. and Altman Biggs of Natchez, Miss; great-grandchildren, Justin Hendrix, Parker Reed Smith, Abigail Brooke Smith, and Gary Warren Walsh, III “Trip,” and Mr. Biggs’ companion of seven years, Anne Smarr of Columbia. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Biggs was preceded in death by his son, Danny Biggs, Jr., and grandson, Joseph Hinson Biggs, III.

Alexander Carrion Lewis Sr.

ORANGEBURG — Mr. Alexander Carrion Lewis Sr., of 545 Palmetto Parkway, died April 3, 2005, in Methodist Oaks. Mr. Lewis, born March 1, 1918, was the second of nine children born to the late John and Ione (Shuler) Carrion of Cope, South Carolina. He was reared by a devoted aunt, Annie Carrion Lewis and her husband, Lemuel Lewis of Orangeburg, South Carolina. A loyal Claflin alumnus, he received his elementary, high school and college education at Claflin University in Orangeburg from 1924 through 1940. For three of his college years, he lettered in football for the Panthers and received the Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, with a minor in Education, and continued advanced studies at South Carolina State College (University).

Mr. Lewis served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army in World War II, including a tour of duty in the Pacific Theatre. In 1947, he was united in marriage to Alba Myers of Orangeburg. They had one son, Alexander C. Lewis Jr., who died in 1990.

For twenty-one years as a masonry contractor, he employed a workforce of men and trained many unskilled laborers to enter the trade as skilled craftsmen. His years as Director of the Neighborhood Youth Corps program of Orangeburg District Five Schools led to statewide recognition for his leadership in assisting numerous area youth in finding gainful employment and furthering their education. He was a life member of the NAACP and a civil rights activist during the 1960s, signing the petition that led to the desegregation of the city’s public schools.

A lifelong resident of Orangeburg, Mr. Lewis distinguished himself as a member of many organizations, including Claflin University Alumni Association, Claflin University Forerunners Club, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., The Shriners, Edisto Free and Accepted Masons, Post 8166 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the National Education Association, the South Carolina Employees Association and the Vocational Rehabilitation Board of Directors. Mr. Lewis worked as project director of the Orangeburg District Five Neighborhood Youth Corps in-school program from 1967 through 1972. From 1975-1982, he served as a Trustee on the Orangeburg Regional Hospital Board of Directors. In 1997, he was inducted into the Claflin University Hall of Fame. In 1998, he was named Man of the Year by the Orangeburg Chapter of Links, Incorporated. He had been a devoted lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church, having served for many years on the administrative board.

Mr. Lewis is survived by his wife, Dr. Alba M. Lewis; granddaughter, Amber C. Lewis; brothers, Robert (Marie) Carrion, Howard Carrion, Floyd Carrion and Calvin Carrion; sisters-in-law, MaeDe Myers Brown, Barbara Myers Freeman, Doris Myers Dean and Wilhelmina Myers Kershaw; goddaughter, Pennye (Charles) Hamilton; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.

The Omega Omega service of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 6 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 185 Boulevard St., NE, Orangeburg, South Carolina.

Memorial services will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, Thursday, April 7, 2005, at 11 a.m. Bythewood Funeral Home is in charge of the services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the Claflin University Scholarship Fund or Trinity United Methodist Church Endowment Foundation.

Sherra Lynn Clemons

LONGS — Sherra Lynn Clemons, 48, of Longs, died Monday, April 4, 2005, at her home.

She was born on January 15, 1957, in Shelby, N.C., a daughter of the late Charles David and Zona Ruth Moore Hubbard.

Sherra leaves behind her loving and devoted husband, Sonny E. Clemons of Longs; her son, William Christopher Cody Wright of Lexington, S.C.; 2 stepdaughters, Jessica L. Clemons and Tiffany A. Clemons of the home; her loving in-laws, Eugene “Not” and Doris Clemons of North Myrtle Beach; a Sister in Spirit, Jane E. Kelly of Lexington, S.C.; her Mother in Spirit, Annie E. Boatwright of Lexington, S.C., and her companion and best friend, Sam.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Lee Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Living Water Baptist Church, Hwy. 9, Longs, S.C. Burial will follow in Southeastern Memorial Gardens, North Myrtle Beach. Pastor Lebron Crisp will officiate.

Dorothy Rhodes

LUGOFF — Funeral services for Dorothy Downs Rhodes, 80, will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Lugoff Friendship Baptist Church with burial to follow in Lugoff First Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Matt Galloway and Rev. Bruce Watford will officiate. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 6, 2005, from 6-8 p.m. at Kornegay Funeral Home Lugoff Elgin Chapel. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association-Mid State Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202-7044 or Lugoff Friendship Baptist Church, 102 Lakewood Drive, Lugoff, SC 29078.

Mrs. Rhodes died Monday, April 4, 2005. Born in Fort Scott, Kansas, she was the daughter of the late Charles Thomas and Mary Downs. Mrs. Rhodes had retired from Camden Middle School and was a member of Lugoff Friendship Baptist Church. Mrs. Rhodes was a very loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. She was very supportive to her family, friends and church. She loved being with people and always having a positive influence. She cooked for the entire Camden High and Citadel football teams. Her hobbies included woodcarving, gardening and painting. Mrs. Rhodes’ granddaughter, Sherry, age 7, wrote this poem to describe her: “ ‘My Grandma’ Curly, dark hair, sparkling eyes and glasses make up my grandma. She is nice to everyone, she is very fun to be with, loving, and honest. She always says my grandchildren are my joy and pride. She is like a candle because she lights up the darkness in my heart.”

Surviving are her husband, William Herbert Rhodes; children, Billy Rhodes and his wife, Martha, of Greenville, Tommy Rhodes and his wife, Ann, of Isle of Palms, Susan Amick and her husband, Gene, of Chapin, and Anthony Rhodes and his wife, Karen, of Charleston; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Sherry, Christina, Laurie, Walt, Wade, Gina, Scott, Charles Anthony, and McKala; great-grandchildren, Rhodes, Maddy, Hannah, Kayla, Ryan; sisters, Charlene Endicott of Wichita, KS, Lou French of Oletha, KS, Donna Dowling of Carthage, MO, and Shirley Simmonds of Carthage, MO. She was predeceased by four sisters.

Irene Bundrick

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Irene Harris Bundrick, 92, of West Columbia, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 7, 2005, at Park Street Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Sam Catoe. Burial will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Park Street Baptist Church Music Ministry.

Mrs. Bundrick died Monday, April 4, 2005. Born in Lancaster, she was a daughter of the late John C. and Plassee Harris. A resident since 1932, she was a member of Park Street Baptist Church. Mrs. Bundrick graduated from Lancaster High School and was secretary for the Margaret McGill Sunday School Class for over forty years.

Surviving are her daughter, Helen Rogers of West Columbia; sister, Earline King of Kannapolis, NC; brother, Claude N. Harris of Port Royal; granddaughter, Brenda R. Breedlove and her husband, Sonny; great-grandson, Cory Breedlove; and special friend, her granddaughter’s golden retriever, “Houston.” Mrs. Bundrick was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers.

Robert E. Bartley

JOHNSTON — Mr. Robert Eugene Bartley, 75, of Woodwide Drive, died Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at his residence.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, April 7, 2005, at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home with burial in Sunset Gardens Memorial Park in Edgefield.

He was a native of Ward, SC, and he was the son of the late Andrew and Beulah Bartley. He had retired as the owner of Bartley’s Heating and Refrigeration of Johnston. He was a member of Johnston First Baptist Church, Kadosh Lodge 181 and the American Legion. He was an Air Force veteran.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Kathy and her husband Greg Allen, Edgefield, Susan and her husband William Clark, Honea Path; grandchildren, Nicole and Jessica Allen, Kayla and Angela Kwist and Will Clark; 4 sisters, Estelle Rodgers, Ward, Catherine Feaster, West Columbia, Sarah Adams, Saluda, Jessie Long, Ward; 1 brother, Henry Bartley, Ward; and a companion, Vivian Timmerman. He was predeceased by his wife, Annette Bartley.

The family is at the home and will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home.
