HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Jackie Pankey Clark, 80, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2005, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The Rev. Ed Griggs and Don Rhyne will officiate with burial in Cedar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Saturday, April 16, 2005, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Disease Association, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202.

Mrs. Clark died Wednesday, April 13, 2005. Born in Chesterfield County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late W. M. Pankey and Martha Pankey Quick. She was a member of Woodfield Park Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, W. I. Clark of Hartsville, S.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Marsha Clark of Ridgeway, S.C.; daughters and sons-in-law, Gail and Charles Bullard of Middendorf, S.C., Lynn and Eddie Lawson of Hartsville, S.C.; sisters, Sue Broach of Columbia, S.C., Bobbie Jean Strickland of Orlando, FL; brother, Bubba Quick of Charleston, S.C.; grandchildren, Regina Love, Laurie Ann Wayne, Lindsay Clark, Stacie Clark, Jamie Lawson, Crystal Logan; 6 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Chip Bullard.

Patricia A. Dozer

WEST COLUMBIA — A celebration of life drop-in will be held for Patricia A. Dozer, 61, from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2005, at Platt Springs United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to Sue Kuhlen Camp for Kid, PO Box 280023, Columbia, SC 29228. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, is in charge.

Mrs. Dozer, widow of Dennis L. Dozer, Sr., died Thursday, April 14, 2005. Born on February 7, 1944, in Summersville, W.Va. She was the daughter of Evelyn Johns Marino and the late John F. Marino, Sr. She was a member of Platt Springs United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Missy Purdom and husband, Russell of Nolensville, TN; son, Michael Walters and wife, Tina of Brentwood, TN; stepdaughter, Bridgette Thompson and husband, Mark of Finley, OH; sisters, Nancy Yates and husband, Lyndell of West Columbia, Peggy Langdale and husband, Joe of Gaston; brothers, Reg and wife, Barbara Marino of Maybank, TX, John and wife, Dee Marino of Gaston; grandchildren, Chris, Matt, Ian, Skylar, Grayson; stepgrandchildren, Nick, Mack and many loving family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her stepson, Dennis L. Dozer, Jr.

Donald Cahal

COLUMBIA — Memorial service for Donald Irvin Cahal, 74, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m at Windsor Lake United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends in the church after the service. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Tri-County Hospice. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.

Mr. Cahal, husband of Virginia Anne Blackwood Cahal, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005. Born in Cattlesburg, Ky., he was a son of the late Charles Furman and Mae Walters Cahal. He was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Ky., with a degree in physics, and an Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict. Retired from the U.S. Geological Survey, Mr. Cahal was an avid golfer and a member of the Woodlands County Club Men’s Golf Association.

Surviving are his wife of forty years; daughter Gwinna Anne Cahal of Columbia; brother and sister-in-law William Furman and Darlene Cahal of Ashland, Ky.; sister Juanita Cahal Riggs of Cincinnati, Oh.; sister-in-law Margie Rae Cahal of Ravenna, Ky.; brothers-in-law, Dr. J. Curtis Blackwood and Dr. G. Vaden Blackwood; sisters-on-law, Martha Blackwood Zeh, Kathy Blackwood Culler, and Emily Blackwood Foster; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Cahal was predeceased by brothers, Edward Cahal, Ceceil Cahal, Sherman Cornelius Cahal, and Jackie Burke Cahal; sisters, Addie Mildred Cahal Wilhoite, Laura Cahal Gaskins, Deloris Cahal Parker, and Mona Moraine Cahal.

Rether Clemons

NORTH — The funeral service for Mrs. Rether Clemons, 90, of 335 Iva Road, Chapel Hill Community, North, is 3 p.m. Saturday at Flora Branch Baptist Church near North with burial in the church cemetery. Mrs. Clemons died April 10, 2005, in Palmetto Health Baptist Hospital. Visitation will be from 1:30-8 tonight at W.B. Crumel Funeral Home of North. Friends may call at the residence and the funeral home.

Valda Campbell

CHESTERFIELD — Services for Valda C. Campbell, 74, retired INA USA employee, widow of James “Baby Jim” Campbell, 11 a.m. today: Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home. Burial: Sandy Plains UMC (where she was a member) Cemetery. Born in Morven, N.C., to John Sanford & Carrie Stroud Campbell, she died April 13, 2005. Surviving: brothers, Barnard, Ed; nieces; nephews; great-niece, Maureen Lear.

Ruth A. Thomas

JOANNA — Ruth A. Thomas, age 90, of 603 Blalock Drive, died Wednesday, April 13, at the NHC in Clinton.

She was born in Newberry County and was the daughter of the late Willie Erskine and Lillie McCollum Adams.

Mrs. Thomas retired from Whitten Center, was a former employee of Joanna Mills and was a member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Clinton.

She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Violet T. and Bill McBride of Meridian, MS, Marlene T. and Vernon DeBerry of Joanna and Sue T. and Mike Entrekin of Joanna; three sisters, Juanita Lake of White Rock, Jeanette Sox and Mildred Bundrick, both of West Columbia; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by 5 brothers and 5 sisters.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at the First Pentecostal Holiness Church with interment in Rosemont Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Pentecostal Holiness Church, 403 Academy St., Clinton, SC 29325 or Hospice of Laurens County, P.O. Box 178, Clinton, SC 29325.

HEATH SPRINGS — Services for John Marion Bridges Jr., 83, cattle farmer, WWII veteran, American Legion Post 31 member, 2 p.m. Sunday: Salem Cemetery; visitation 6-8 p.m. Saturday: Mahaffey F.H., Lancaster. Born in Heath Springs to John and Eugenia Beckham Bridges, he died April 13, 2005. Surviving: aunt, Sara Faulkenberry; sister, Mary Lentz; nieces and nephews, Mary Steudle, Jean, Dr. Tony, Danny, Clark Lentz.

Michael Hoffman

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. — Michael Dwayne Hoffman, age 47, of Stockbridge, GA died Wednesday, April 13, 2005. He was born in Columbia, S.C., son to Thomas Edison Hoffman and surviving mother Narvalee Williams, Swansea, S.C. He served our country with the United States Army Reserve and was a volunteer Fireman with the City of Stockbridge for 4 years in the 1980s.

Michael D. Hoffman is survived by sons, David Hoffman, Locust Grove, GA, Chad Hoffman, Stockbridge, GA; siblings, Tommi Boozer, Swansea, S.C., Kathy Williams, Swansea, S.C., Roy Williams, Swansea, S.C., Laval Williams, Swansea, S.C., Jimmy Williams, Columbia, S.C., Jimmy Hoffman, Swansea, S.C., Kenny Hoffman, Swansea, S.C.; grandson, Christopher David Hoffman; stepmother, Blanche Hoffman, Swansea, S.C.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Saturday, April 16, 2005, at Chapel of Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors with Dr. Scott Caudill officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday, April 15, 2005, from 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home. Boyd Alexander Sr.

BISHOPVILLE — Funeral services for Boyd M. Alexander, Sr. age 79, who died April 14, will be held Sunday at 4:00 p.m. from the Bethlehem United Methodist Church. Pastor Kenneth W. Phelps will officiate. Burial will be in the Bethlehem Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be Saturday 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Alexander was born in Lee County, a son of the late James “Jimmy” Edward and Minnie Barfield Alexander. After a period of time in the insurance industry, Boyd retired from the U.S. Postal Service. His most favorite place of employment came in the latter years of his life at Norton Funeral Home, Bishopville & Hartsville. He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Bishopville; he served the church in many ways. He was most proud of his affiliation with the Bishopville Masonic Lodge #104, where he served as a Past Worshipful Master. As well, he was a member of the Bishopville Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star #74. He was a Navy veteran of WW II. Surviving are his wife of 58 years Jean Huggins Alexander, Bishopville, sons and daughters-in-law: B. Mike (Betsy) Alexander, Columbia; J. Wiley (DeLois) Alexander, Hartsville; R. Whitman “Whit” (Beth) Alexander, Greenville; 5 grandchildren; sisters: Pearl A. Dew, Bishopville; Roma A. Mangum, Monroe, N.C.; Adria A. Belk, N. Myrtle Beach; Virginia A. Fogle, Aiken; He was predeceased by a number of brothers and sisters. The family wishes to offer a special thanks to his caretakers: Willie Rose Carter, sister-in-law; Josie Beasley, Rosalie Hyatt and Hospice workers. COLUMBIA — Services for Mr. Mario Concepcion, 56, will be held at 2 p.m. today in the Leevy’s Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel, is in charge. Surviving are his wife, Patricia Concepcion; sons, Apollo Davis and Mario Concepcion; daughter, Amalia Concepcion; siblings, Carmon, Fabian and Ana; granddaughter, Aliayah.

Bobby G. Floyd

LEXINGTON — Services for Bobby Gene Floyd, 69, will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 17, 2005, at Round Hill Baptist Church with interment to follow in Celestial Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Round Hill Baptist Church, 230 Persimmon Lane, Lexington, SC 29072.

Mr. Floyd died Friday, April 15, 2005. Born January 8, 1936, in Mayesville, SC, he was the son of the late Wiley Leon and Kizzie Allen Floyd. He was a member of Round Hill Baptist Church. Mr. Floyd was a U.S. Marine and Air Force veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Muriel Floyd of Lexington; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael E. and Linda Floyd of West Columbia, Cliff and Lucia Floyd of Woodruff; daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Ed Freier of Elgin; brothers, Charles A. Floyd of Fort Mill, Frank M. Floyd of Columbia, Donnie Floyd of Columbia; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He is preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Matthews.

Harry Glover

ALLENDALE — Services for Harry James Glover, 70, widower of Christian Hay-Glover, will be held at 3 p.m. today at Cave Funeral Services with burial in Smart Cemetery. Born to Walter Glover and Bennie Lee Bowls-Glover, he died April 12, 2005. Surviving are daughter, Annette Brown; brothers, George Glover, Rev. Walter Glover; 3 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Dr. Eugene Francis “Dr. Mac” McManus Sr.

AIKEN — Dr. Eugene F. McManus, Sr. entered into rest on April 14, 2005 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Augusta, Georgia.

“Dr. Mac,” as he was known by his patients, was a native of Charleston, South Carolina. Aiken soon became his home. He was the son of Joseph Cornelius and Mary Cecilia McGrane McManus.

He attended Porter Military School. He received his undergraduate degree from the College of Charleston, and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of South Carolina. After interning in St. Louis, Missouri, he completed his pediatric residency at the Medical College Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina. He served in the Public Health Service in New Orleans, Louisiana, and began his practice of pediatrics in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina then Winfield, Kansas, before settling into his thirty-four year pediatric career in Aiken.

He was a member of the Aiken County Medical Society, the South Carolina Medical Association, the South Carolina Pediatric Society, and the South Carolina chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

In 1989 he was honored as Physician of the Year by the Aiken County Medical Association. Also in 1989 he was awarded the Volunteer Physician of the Year by the Lower Savannah Health District. This award was given to a physician who worked with the local health department over the years to provide medical service to the medically indigent. He was most proud of this award because he was able to give back to the community so much that had been given to him.

He was a parishioner of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Aiken, and a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus.

His first love was the children he treated and their parents. All who came in contact with him knew that he cared deeply for his patients and would go to great lengths to make sure they received the best of care.

He is survived by his beloved wife Margaret Hemstreet McManus; son, Eugene F. McManus, Jr., and his wife Ann Marie of Augusta; daughters Margaret McManus, of North Augusta and Catherine Bedenbaugh and her husband Stuart of North Augusta; grandchildren Maureen, Mac, Caroline, Catherine, and Cecilia McManus, of Augusta; and Thomas and Colleen Bedenbaugh of North Augusta; a brother, Joseph C. McManus, Jr., Mt. Pleasant.

A Prayer Vigil and Rosary will be held Sunday at 5:00 p.m. at Shellhouse Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service until 8:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church with The Reverend C. Alexander McDonald, celebrant. Final prayers and commendations will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Terence McManus, Jr., Joseph C. McManus III, Dr. R. Patrick McManus, Jr., Kevin Cronin, Bruce R. Young and Peter McManus. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Aiken County Medical Association.
