Bunion V. Frick

CHAPIN — Services for Bunion V. Frick, 81, will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at St. Peter Lutheran Church (Pineywoods), Chapin, with interment to follow in church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Charley Frick, Glenn Amick, Jessie Ray Frick, Randy Bundrick, Glenn Wessinger, and Bradley Abrams. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel.

Mr. Frick, widower of Mae B. Frick, whom he was married to for sixty years, died Monday, April 18, 2005. Born in Chapin, he was the son of the late David Leroy and Katie Stoudemire Frick. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, where he had served as a council member. He was a retired superintendent and carpenter, an avid fisherman, hunter, baseball player, and farmer. He loved the outdoors.

Mr. Frick is survived by his family that he adored, daughter, Betty Frick Sox (Larry) of Chapin; son, David O. Frick (Nancy F.) of Little Mountain; grandchildren, Amanda Drafts (Randell), DeeDee Anderson (Ray) all of Little Mountain, Chris Sox (Charity) of Chapin; great-grandchildren, Randy and Dave Drafts of Little Mountain, and Caleb Sox of Chapin; sisters, Alline Amick, Doris Meetze, both of Chapin; brother, Maurice Frick of Chapin.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Patrick Frick; brothers, T.O. and Lynell Frick.

William Ford Sr.

WEST COLUMBIA — Service for William Waller Ford, Sr., 76, will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Mr. Ford will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Visitation will be Tuesday 6-8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo.

Mr. Ford died Monday, April 18, 2005, after an extended illness. Born in Asheville, N.C., he was a son of the late John Covie and Janie Bryson Ford. He grew up in Greenville, graduated from Greenville High School and attended Furman University. He retired as engineering manager from Southern Bell after thirty-eight years of employment.

Mr. Ford was an active member of Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church and The Friendship Sunday School Class, serving on various committees within the church and was a past president of his Sunday School class. He loved playing tennis with dear friends. Woodworking was a hobby that he greatly enjoyed.

Surviving are his wife, Bobbie Anders Ford; sons, William W. “Woody” Ford, Jr. of Columbia, David G. Ford and his wife, Sherry, of Irmo and Gregory Ford of Canton, N.C.; and grandchildren, Tracy Ford and Matthew Ford. He was predeceased by his brother, John Ford, Jr.

Effie Fender

QUINBY — A funeral service for Mrs. Effie McMillan Fender, widow of John Charles Fender, Sr., will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning, April 20, 2005, at Quinby Baptist Church. A commital service will be at 2:30 p.m. in Carolina Memorial Gardens, North Charleston. The services will be conducted by Rev. Bill Hancock. The family will receive friends tonight from 6-8 at Cain Funeral Home. The family requests memorials to Quinby Baptist Church Building Fund, Post Office Box 15327, Quinby, SC 29506.

Mrs. Fender, 89, of Quinby, died Monday, April 18, 2005, in a local hospital. She was born April 7, 1916, in Lodge, S.C., to the late Richard Benjamin and Arrowbelle Buckhann McMillan.

Mrs. Fender was a charter member of the First Baptist Church, North Charleston, where she was director of WMU and a Primary Sunday School teacher for 30 years. Since 1995, she had been a member of Quinby Baptist Church. She retired as a Supervisor with Charleston Manufacturing Company and School Timer Manufacturing.

Among her survivors are: son, Johnnie Mitchell Fender of Quinby; grandchildren, Belinda F. Porter, James M. Fender, Ruth F. Taylor and Gwen F. Maddrix; and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Jade and Jessica Blair Fender, Karlin E. and Alexis M. Porter, Rachel D. and Benjamin Joel Taylor, Jacob McCuthan and Gabbrielle Maddrix.

She loved the Lord with all her mind, soul and body. She was dedicated to the Lord and His work, and also to her family.

Dr. Hubert Claytor

COLUMBIA — Graveside service for Dr. Hubert Claytor, 88, will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Congaree. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to The Animal Mission, Pets, Inc. or your local humane society.

Dr. Claytor died Sunday, April 17, 2005. Born in 1916 in Hopkins, S.C., he was the son of the late William Quesenbury Claytor and Marguerite Dreher Claytor. He graduated from the Consolidated High School #1 (now Lower Richland High School) in 1933. He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a B.S Degree in Chemistry in 1938. He received his M.D. from the Medical College of South Carolina (now MUSC) in 1942. He enrolled, while in medical school, as a Lieutenant in the Medical Corps of the United States Army. He did his internship at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Ga., from 1942-1943. He served in the Army from July, 1943, until September, 1946. He served in the Medical Service Field, in Panama, and on an Army transport ship. He held the rank of Captain at the time of his discharge. He returned to Columbia and worked as a General Practitioner from 1946 - 1953. He began a residency in internal medicine at the V.A. Hospital in Columbia in 1953. He continued to work at the V.A. Hospital until 1968, serving as Chief of Medicine at one time. He went into private practice with Dr. Edward Bradley and Dr. Elbert Johnson until his retirement in 1985.

Dr. Claytor was a member of the American Medical Association and the South Carolina Medical Association. An avid Gamecock fan, he was also a member of the Gamecock Club for over fifty years. While physically able, he enjoyed going to his childhood home in Hopkins and gardening.

Dr. Claytor was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Congaree.

Surviving are his wife of sixty-two years, Florence Armour Claytor; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. James E. and Bonnie Claytor of Columbia; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn C. and Donald Shields of Hopkins; and grandchildren, Andy Shields, Patty Shields, Brian Claytor, Kelly Claytor and Stacy Claytor.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Robert Smith and his staff for their care over the past several years and also to Lori German, Bessie Wood and Mildred Carter.

Russell Williams

HOLLY HILL — Russell A. Williams, 74, of 210 Gardner Blvd., Holly Hill, South Carolina, died April 17, 2005, in VA Medical Center, Charleston, S.C., after an extended illness.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at Hill Zion Baptist Church on Unity Road in Holly Hill, S.C. The Reverend Franklin Hezekiah officiating. Burial will be in Holly Hill Zion Cemetery on Toney Bay Road in Holly Hill, S.C.

Mr. Williams was born in Bamberg, S.C., a son of the late Sam Williams and Ellen Johnson Williams. He completed elementary and high school at Richard Carroll School in Bamberg and received an Associate Degree from Voorhees Junior College in Denmark, S.C. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served honorably during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired employee of ITT in New York, N.Y.

He was a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church in Bamberg during his youthful days. Upon moving to New York, he joined Allen AME Church in White Plains, New York. When he retired and moved to Holly Hill, he joined Hill Zion Baptist Church where he served as a member of the Senior and Young Adult Choirs, the Pastor’s Aide Board and the Sunday School.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Wilhelmena Wright Williams of the home; one brother, Willie James (Mary) Williams of Donald, S.C.; three sisters, Mrs. Lovely Grimes and Ms. Mary Williams, both of Charlotte, N.C., and Mrs. Martha (Charles) Williams of Columbia, S.C.; six sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law.

Friends may call at the residence and Shuler-Marshall Funeral Home, Inc. of Holly Hill, S.C.

James Tupper

COLUMBIA — Funeral service for James Lockwood Tupper, AIA, 83, will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Martin’s in the Fields Episcopal Church with burial in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Cemetery, Summerville. The Reverend Michael Anderson Bullock and The Reverend Michael Lumpkin will officiate. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Mr. Tupper died Monday, April 18, 2005 at the Rice Home. He was born March 21, 1922, in Summerville. He was the son of the late Elias Doar Tupper, M.D. and Regina Allison Lockwood Tupper. He was a charter member of St. Martin’s in the Fields Episcopal Church having served on the Vestry as Junior and Senior Warden. He designed St. Martin’s and was a consultant with the Willet Glass Company for the stained glass windows. He was very active in community and the Episcopal Diocese. He was the coordinator for “Faith Alive” for South Carolina and North Carolina for fifteen years and was active in “Faith at Work”. He was a past member of Columbia Sertoma Club, the Columbia Ball and the Summit Club.

Mr. Tupper was a member of the American Institute of Architects having worked with Lafaye, Fair, Lafaye for thirty-five years and the State Department of Education, Office of School Planning and Building. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers during WW II. He was a graduate with honors of Clemson University in 1943.

Surviving are his wife, Frances Dill Mikell Tupper; son and daughter-in-law, James Lockwood Tupper, Jr. and Carolyn Shuford Tupper; three grandsons, Park Mikell Tupper, Lee Lockwood Tupper and Joel Ashford Tupper; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Frances Dill Tupper of Charleston.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields Foundation, 5220 Clemson Avenue, Columbia, S.C. 29206 or to the Alzheimer’s S.C. Chapter, P.O. 7044, Columbia, S.C. 29202.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at 5150 Hillside Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29206.

Dora Lee Roseborough Johnson

COLUMBIA — Homegoing services for Dora Lee Roseborough Johnson of Columbia will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Bride Tabernacle Church of Jesus Christ with burial to follow in Serenity Memorial Gardens.

Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home is in charge of the service.

Mrs. Johnson died April 16, 2005. Born in Pontiac, she was the daughter of the late Moses and Mary Jane Samuels Roseborough.

She is survived by her husband, Randolph Johnson, Sr.; three sons, Randolph Jr. (Beverly), Gilbert (Henrietta) & Albert (Joann) Johnson; five daughters, Rosa Mae (Donald) Wilder, Winifred (Melvin) Simmons, Anna J. McClinton, Sylvia (James) White; brothers, George (Shirley Ann) & Newry (Helen) Roseborough; sisters, Fannie (William) Anderson, Juliene Roseborough, Wilbertine Keitt, Edna Gibbs & Gerdine (Frank) Taylor; two sisters-in-law, Icola Roseborough & Nell Bush; twenty-four grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, all of whom will miss her dearly.

William L. Coulbourne Sr.

CAMDEN — Funeral services with Masonic Rites for William L. “Bill” Coulbourne, Sr., 88, will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2005, at noon at Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church with burial to follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Rev. Lee Bryant will officiate. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 21, 2005, one hour prior to the service from 11 a.m.- noon at Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church, 1206 Lyttleton Street, Camden, SC 29020.

Mr. Coulbourne died Monday, April 18, 2005, in Pleasantville, N.J. Born in Oyster, Va., he was the son of the late Alonzo Lee and Anna Sims Coulbourne. He had retired from the DuPont Company as a control superintendent after 39 years of service. Mr. Coulbourne was a member of Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church, a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II, a 32nd degree Mason, and a member of Kershaw Lodge #29. He was also active in the Lions Club and Boy Scouts of America.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Heaps Coulbourne of Linwood, N.J.; sons, Bill Coulbourne, Jr. of Arlington, Va., and Gifford (Giff) Coulbourne of Princeton, W.Va.; stepdaughter, Judy Dale of Egg Harbor Township, N.J.; 3 grandchildren, Mark, Kelly and Anna; 2 great-grandchildren, Tyler and Ashley. He was predeceased by his first wife, Letitia “Tish” Kelly Coulbourne, brother, Tom, and sisters, Grace and Leila.

Levern Miles

COLUMBIA — Funeral services for Mr. Levern Miles, 73, of Columbia, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 21, 2005, at Bayview Baptist Church, with Rev. Jimmy Davis and Rev. Scott Peterson officiating. Interment will be held at 4 p.m. in First Baptist Church Cemetery in Pageland, S.C. The body will be placed in the church at noon. The family will receive friends at Greenlawn Funeral Home Wednesday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to Bayview Baptist Church, 5300 Two Notch Road, Columbia, SC. The family has entrusted Greenlawn Funeral Home with the arrangements.

Mr. Miles died Monday, April 18, 2005, in Lexington Medical Center. Born on November 9, 1931, in Florence, S.C., he was the son of the late Otto Miles and Marie Floyd Miles. He had been a resident of Columbia for the past 45 years and retired as a police officer with the Department of Mental Health after 27 years of service. Mr. Miles was a member of Bayview Baptist Church and of the Fisher Sunday School Class of the church.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann Miles of Columbia; a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Robbie Burrows of Lexington; two sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Sandra Miles of Effingham and Ray and Linda Miles of Darlington; a stepson, Jeff Peay and his wife Alex of Columbia; a sisters, Beulah Mae Matthews of Effingham; three brothers, William Miles of Lake City, Carl Miles of Coward, and Bruce Miles of Shingle Springs, California; grandchildren, Adam and Robin Burrows, Jessica Miles and Jason Miles; several very special nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Oddie Mae Miles.

Jean H. Roberts

ANDERSON — Jean Halse Roberts, 83, of Anderson, died Monday, April 18, 2005, in NHC of Anderson.

Born in Poole, England, she was a high school graduate in England. She was a lifelong member of the Anglican Church, and attended the Baptist Church in Anderson.

Surviving are one daughter, Janice Roberts Hill of Cayce; one son, Graham P. Roberts of Anderson; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of Palmer Moody Roberts, and daughter of the late Arthur Douglas and Hilda Lene Spiller Halse.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The body is at the Northeast Chapel, 3205 Highway 81, where the family will receive friends from 10 until 11 a.m. Thursday. The family is at the home of her son, Graham P. Roberts, 206 Rhodehaven Drive.
