Frances DeShield Hopkins Ridgell
BATESBURG-LEESVILLE — Services for Frances DeShield Hopkins Ridgell will be conducted at First Baptist Church of Batesburg at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2006, with Rev. Philip McNeal officiating. Burial will follow in Batesburg Cemetery. Visitation will be at Barr-Price Funeral Home, Historic B-L Chapel, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2006.

Mrs. Ridgell was the wife of the late Edgar C. Ridgell, Pharmacist and co-owner of Ridgell Drug Company in Batesburg and a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Batesburg, where she served in many capacities.

She was born in Florence, South Carolina, and was the daughter of the late Franklin Vincent and Kene Lucille Wilkins Hopkins. She was predeceased by her sister, Eleanor Hopkins Humphrey. Mrs. Ridgell graduated from Furman University with a bachelor’s and a master’s degree and had completed most of her studies for a Ph.D. in Library Science. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for Key Women Educators. An avid historian, she was a charter member of the Granby Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Lexington, South Carolina, where she served two years as Regent. Mrs. Ridgell was also a member of South Carolina Colonial Dames and the Clan MacDougal Society. She was an excellent teacher of South Carolina History and had retired as a longtime director of the Batesburg-Leesville High School library. She was also an original member of the Lexington County Circulating Library where one of her many contributions was to drive the “Book Mobile.”

Surviving family members are Edgar Clement “Tad” Ridgell, Jr. (Priscilla) of West Columbia, Eleanor DeShield Ridgell Tomlinson (Rick) of Florence, Robert Hopkins “Hop” Ridgell (Bridget) of Lexington; grandchildren, U.C. “Chet” Tomlinson III, Frances Dare Ridgell Claire, Kene Tomlinson Holloman, Daniel Christal Ridgell; two great-grandchildren, Tallon and Tanner Holloman.

Active pallbearers will be Haskell Brown, Tom Camp, Charles Kirkland, Brock Nicholson, Dr. Tom Pritchard, Bob Speaks, Terry Taylor and Dr. James D. Whitehead.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Generations of Batesburg, Oakleaf Village of Lexington, and Lexington Extended Care for their care and comfort in her final time, and would also like to thank Carolyn and William Carson and all of her many other friends for their longtime love and friendship.

Memorials may be made to the Granby Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Lexington, South Carolina, or the First Baptist Church of Batesburg, building fund.

Earl Edwin Browning
LEXINGTON — Mass of Christian Burial for Earl Edwin Browning, 82, will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church with Father Bob Sayer officiating. Burial will follow in Lexington Memorial Park. Rosary with visitation following will be conducted from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Barr-Price Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.

Mr. Browning died Saturday, June 3, 2006, at his home. Born in Hillsboro, TX, he was a son of the late Lemuel Ross and Nina Osborne Browning. He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, an Army veteran of WWII and was a retired boiler maker.

Surviving are his caregiver and companion, Cathy L. Gates of Lexington, and caregiver, Wendy Wright; sisters, Maurise Addington and Denise McLaughlin of Fort Worth, TX.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mildred Singley Browning and a son, Earl Maurice Browning.

John Bryce Jr.
WINNSBORO — Graveside services for John Jess Bryce, Jr., age 78, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2006, in First Baptist Church Cemetery, conducted by Reverend Bundy Bynum and Reverend Lloyd Sanders. The family will receive friends at 26G Laurelwood Apts., Winnsboro. Memorials may be made to Harmony Care Hospice, 100 Ashland Park Lane, Suite K, Columbia, SC 29210.

Born in Fairfield County, October 12, 1927, Mr. Bryce was the son of the late John Jess and Cora Bell Bryce. Mr. Bryce was a member of First United Methodist Church of Winnsboro and served as a custodian for the J.B. Floyd properties. Mr. Bryce died Sunday, June 4, 2006.

Mr. Bryce is survived by a brother, Charlie Bryce of Winnsboro; two sisters, Lorena Marthers of Winnsboro and Nancy Van Tyle of Lawrenceburg, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Bryce was predeceased by a sister, Virgina B. Wilkes and a devoted cousin, Frances P. Robertson.

Pope Funeral Home is serving the Bryce family.

Ruth Roddey MacDonald
ROCKLEDGE, Fla. — Graveside services for Ruth “Buddie” Roddey MacDonald, 89, of Melbourne, FL, formerly of Columbia, will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens, Columbia, conducted by Rev. Joe Cal Watson.

Mrs. MacDonald died May 18, 2006, in Rockledge. A visitation was held in Rockledge on May 24, 2006.

She was born in Spartanburg County, SC and graduated from Brookland-Cayce High School in 1935.

She is survived by her son, John Thomas MacDonald, and his wife, Donna, of Melbourne; sisters, Ruby R. Reid and Frances R. Coleman, both of Columbia; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Nannie C. Smith Roddey; father, William R. Roddey; and brother, Robert Roddey.

Hattie Edwards Johnson
HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Hattie Edwards Johnson, age 89, widow of William Burtis(Burt) Johnson, who went home to be with Jesus on Sat., June 3, will be Tuesday 4:00 p.m. from the Chapel Norton Funeral Home. Rev. Grover Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Chesterfield a daughter of the late Lonnie and Mary Ann Ingram Edwards. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and the Christian Fellowship SS Class. Her favorite hobby was raising pretty flowers.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law: Gretta and Billy Johnson, Hartsville; daughter-in-law: Joyce Johnson, Hartsville; 8 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son: Leon Johnson and a granddaughter: Karen Johnson.

William Ted Cone Sr.
SYCAMORE — Mr. William Ted Cone Sr., 61, of 438 W. Main St., died Sat., June 3, in University Hospital after a short illness.

He was born Dec. 15, 1944, in Orangeburg.

He was a son of the late William W. Cone and Mary Louise Loadholt Cone. He was a self-employed farmer, a member of The Sycamore Baptist Church, a current Deacon, a board member of Farm Bureau, and Mayor Pro-tem for the town of Sycamore.

Surviving are his wife, Ouida Williams Cone, of Sycamore; 1 daughter, Margaret Taylor (William), of Sycamore; 2 sons, William Ted Cone Jr. (Denise), of Sycamore, Jason Pretto Cone (April), of Sycamore; 1 brother, Jerry Michael Cone, of Sycamore; and 7 grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at The Sycamore Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Charles Hattaway, with burial following in the Fairfax Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home and Tuesday morning at the church at 10:00 a.m.

Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home of Allendale is in charge of arrangements.

C. Eldred Connelly
PROSPERITY — Services for C. Eldred Connelly will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 6-7 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall Fund, 4056 St. Luke’s Church Road, Prosperity, SC 29127.

Mr. Connelly, 92, died June 3, 2006. Born in Prosperity, he was a son of the late Tira Tiller and Belle Bedenbaugh Connelly. Mr. Connelly was an World War II Army veteran and retired from Kendall Company-Oakland Plant. He was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church where he was a member of the Adult 2 Sunday School Class.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Bernice Hawkins Connelly; a son, Keith E. Connelly of Newberry and a granddaughter, Rachel Connelly. He was predeceased by brothers, James Connelly and Carol Connelly and sisters, Juanita Kibler and Eula Mae Rise.

Dorothy “Bear” Stanley
WILLISTON — Services for Dorothy “Bear” Stanley, 52, will be held 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with burial at the Williston Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Folk Funeral Home, Williston. Dorothy died on Saturday.

Born in Columbia she was a daughter of the late Oren and Eva Langley Lee. She worked in home health, hospital and nursing home care and was a homemaker. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, which she loved dearly.

Survivors include her husband of thirty years, Ronnie Stanley; sister, Frances (Clifton) Hinson of Gaston; a number of nieces, nephews and many friends.

Phyllis Kellar Mowry
COLUMBIA — Services for Phyllis Kellar Mowry, will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday June 6, 2006, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel with interment to follow in the Bush River Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Southeastern Children’s Home or Palmetto Bible Camp at 425 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, SC 29210.

Born July 14, 1912 in Ayers, West Virginia she was the daughter of Perley Forrest Kellar and Viola Evans Kellar. Mrs. Mowry passed away Saturday, June 3, 2006. She is the widow of Clyde Milde Mowry whom she was married to for fifty-four years. She was a member of St. Andrews Church of Christ. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a faithful Christian.

Mrs. Mowry is survived by a daughter, Luanne Stephens (Aaron) of Monroe, NC; sons; Phillip Mowry (Barbara) of Montgomery, AL, and John Mowry (Lou) of Farmington, MO; brother, John Kellar of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; grandchildren; Troy Mowry, Todd Mowry, Judy Starnes, Tim Mowry, Melissa and Kit Tatum, Drs. Kevin and Cathy Mowry, Brittany Stephens, Ryan Stephens; great-grandchild, Ethan Joseph Mowry; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters and brothers, Lura Kellar, Evelyn Marsh, Paul Kellar, Bea Gainer and Loure Hoover.

Mary Lillian Livingston
NORTH — Mary Lillian Livingston, 78, of North, died Saturday, June 3, 2006.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at Limestone United Methodist Church with Rev. R.T. Bowling officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Rusty Jeffcoat, James Garrick, Ron Tyler, Kevin Fields, Roger Amaker, and Herk Fields. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Orangeburg Nursing Home and members of the Garden City Antique Car Club.

Mrs. Livingston was born in Orangeburg County, a daughter of the late Tom and Vivian Stroman Livingston. She was a member of Limestone United Methodist Church. She was married to the late Archie Livingston. She and her husband were members of the Palmetto Model A Club and the Garden City Antique Car Club. She was known as “Granny” by many. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt. She was always smiling and willing to help others.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law: Sherrie and Lewis Culler, of Leesville; a grandson, Michael Travis Jeffcoat, of North; a great-granddaughter, Natalie Marie Jeffcoat; a brother and sister-in-law: C.J. and Annette Inabinet, of Orangeburg; a sister-in-law: Mary Livingston Cook; a special friend, Elma Griffis; a number of nieces and nephews; and her extended family at Orangeburg Nursing Home.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home and other times at the home, 2289 AZ Road, North.

Marie Richardson Elliott
GALIVANTS FERRY — Mrs. Marie Richardson Elliott, age 85, of the Zoan Community of Horry County, passed away Saturday morning, June 3, 2006, at her residence following an illness.

Mrs. Elliott was born August 1, 1920, in Marion County, a daughter of the late Henry Eathel and Bessie Baxley Richardson. She was predeceased by her husband, Bernie Elliott, and was a member of the Zoan United Methodist Church.

Survivors include five sons: Jimmie Elliott and his wife, Genice, of Galivants Ferry, Terry Elliott and his wife Elaine of Nebo, NC, Glen Elliott and his wife, Miranda, of Galivants Ferry, Donald Elliott and his wife, Joyce, of Ridgeway, SC, and the Rev. Gene Elliott and his wife, Anne, of Johnson City, TN; one daughter: Donna Johnson and her husband, Lynn, of Galivants Ferry; four sisters: Estelle Smith of Aynor, Mary Frances Monroe of Laurinburg, NC, Betty Jo Lau of Charlotte, NC, and Margaret Bracey of Rowland, NC; a sister-in-law: Sarah Richardson of Maxton, NC; five grandchildren: Shawn Elliott, Floyd Elliott, Sam Elliott, Brandi Lynn Johnson, and Georgianna Johnson; and two great-grandchildren: Cameron and Lane Elliott.

The family will receive friends Sunday, June 4, 2006, from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. at Ward Funeral Home in Loris.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 5, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. from the Zoan United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gene Elliott and the Rev. Sam Clardy officiating. Burial will follow in the Zoan United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Helen Wingard Carree
COLUMBIA — Services for Mrs. Helen Wingard Carree, 71, of 1035 Denton Drive, will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Union Baptist Church, 1800 Germany Street, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. today, and the family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. at Manigault-Hurley Funeral Home, 2229 Two Notch Road.

Daughter of the late Booker T. and Mable Collins Wingard and former wife of the late Leroy Carree, Mrs. Carree was born in Columbia, SC, and died on Thursday, June 1, 2006.

Mrs. Carree attended Booker T. Washington High School and retired from the Richland County Treasurer’s Office. She was a devoted mother, a faithful friend, and was loved by many.

She leaves to cherish her memory: three daughters, Debra (Major) Campbell of Mitchellville, MD, Sonya Renee Carree and Kimberly C. Dean, both of Columbia, SC; one adopted daughter, Angela Boyd of Columbia, SC; three sons, Kevin A. (Annette) Carree, Jeffrey (Terri) Carree, and Martin E. (Carmen) Carree, all of Columbia, SC; two sisters, Vivian (Frank) Washington of Columbia, SC, and Mildred Johnson of Chicago, IL; two brothers, Booker T. (Marilyn) Russell of Minneapolis, MN, and James Wingard of Chicago, IL; nineteen grandchildren; one great grandchild; extended family members, Sophia Guida, Annette Bass, and Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Richardson; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
