James E. Motte Jr.
PENDLETON — James Eddie Motte Jr., 80, of 220 Buchanan Circle, husband of Helen Gilliam Motte, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at Anderson Area Medical Center.
A native of Greenwood, he was a son of the late James E. Motte Sr. and Essie Davenport Motte. He was a World War II Army veteran and a retired textile employee. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three daughters, Carole M. Walters of Lexington, Betty Jean Phillips of Anderson and Sandra M. Varellas of Lexington, Ky.; two brothers, Bobby R. Motte and Wilburn “Preacher” Motte, both of Greenwood; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central, with burial in Memory Gardens.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Pendleton United Methodist Church or the Salvation Army.

Lizzie Mae Norman
PROMISED LAND — Lizzie Mae Statam Norman, 95, of 106 Norman Road, widow of Roddie Norman, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at her home.
Born in Lincoln County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Joe and Lucy Ann Blackwell. She was a member of Jacob Chapel Baptist Church, Greenwood County, where she was a former Missionary member, senior choir member and deaconess. She was also former member of the Fifty-Voice Chorus and the Home Demonstration Club.
Survivors include five sons, the Rev. Moses B. Norman, Joe Louis Norman and Raymond Norman, all of Greenwood and Edward Norman and Lonnie Norman, both of Promised Land; two daughters, Ruby Norman Evans and Beatrice Norman Williams, both of Greenwood; 30 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Services are 3 p.m. Sunday at Jacob Chapel Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Brown and other ministers. The body will be placed in the church at 2. Burial is in Evening Star Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are grandsons, and flower bearers are granddaughters.
Visitation is from 7-8 Saturday at Robinson & Son Mortuary and at the home.
The family is at the home.

Gerald W. Revels
GREENWOOD — Gerald Wayne “Red” Revels, 69, of 1224 Ninety Six Highway, Lot 9, husband of Mary Brannon Revels, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Spartanburg County, he was a son of the late James Mack and Dora Mae Cash Revels. He was formerly employed by B.F. Adams Body Shop and was a member of Casey Creek Baptist Church in Spartanburg.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Teresa Dunn and Deborah Wham, both of Greenwood; three sisters, Lillie Belle Crocker, Louise Morris and Lula Mae Tennyson, all of Spartanburg; a brother, Odell Revels of Chesnee; two grandchildren and a step-grandchild.
Services were 2 p.m. Thursday at Harley Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Frank Thomas and Mrs. Pat Argo. Burial was in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Kenneth Westmoreland, Roy Wilbanks, Jimmy Haynes, Buddy Rush, Ray Hall and Marion Argo.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Deborah Wham, 105 Lynn St.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Harley Funeral Home was in charge.

Ruth Thomas
GREENWOOD — Ruth Tipton Thomas, 80, of 101 Piper St., wife of William R. “Bill” Thomas, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at National Health Care in Clinton.
Born in Pelzer, she was a daughter of the late Levi W. and Wessie Allen Tipton. She retired from Abney Mills, Grendel Plant, and was a member of Beulah Baptist Church and the Ladies Sunday School Class of the church.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a son, Ronald T. Payton of Albany, Ga.; three stepdaughters, Violet McBride of Meridian, Miss., Marlene DeBerry and Sue Entrekin, both of Joanna; a brother, Edward Tipton of Rock Hill; a granddaughter; two great-granddaughters; and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
Services are at noon Saturday at Blyth Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. David Cobb and the Rev. Furman Entrekin. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Mike Evans, Brad Evans, Wayne Sartin, Scott Woodard, Robert DeBerry and Charles Couch.
Visitation is from 11-noon Saturday at the funeral home.
The family is at the home.

Hilda E. Snipes
GREENVILLE - Hilda Evans Snipes, 78, of 8 Bradford North Way, wife of Rayford Snipes, died Thursday, July 11, 2002 at her home.
Mrs. Snipes was born in Greenwood County, daughter of the late William Evans and Lela Pitts Evans Price. She was a graduate of Lander College and was retired from Clemson University. Mrs. Snipes was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greenville.
Surviving in addition to her husband are three sons: John Rayford Snipes, Jr. and Forrest Lee Snipes, both of Summerville, SC, and Robert Phillip Snipes of Travelers Rest, SC; one daughter: Mary Lynn Snipes of Greenville, and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11AM in the Chapel of the First Baptist Church of Greenville. Interment will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11AM at the church prior to the service.
Memorials may be made to St. Francis Hospice, 1 St. Francis Drive, Greenville, SC.

Chalmos Wood
HODGES — Chalmos Wood, 82, of 7217 Highway 25 N., husband of Lois Hayes Wood, died Monday, July 8, 2002.
Born in Atlanta, he was a son of the late Leon and Bessie Sanders Wood. He was a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam, serving 24 years with the Navy and 22 years with the CMD of Department of Defense. A Bronze Star recipient, he was a member of the DOD Maritime Pilots Association, Jacksonville, Fla., the Fleet Reserve and First Baptist Church of Ware Shoals.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Sara French and Jimmie Summerset, both of Pensacola, Fla.; a stepson, Daniel Ashmore of Hodges; a stepdaughter, Nancy Locklear of Charleston; two brothers, Bill Wood of Spartanburg and Floyd Wood of Augusta, Ga.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Memorial services are 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Ware Shoals, conducted by the Rev. Leon Jones.
The family is at the home.

Mary Burrell
WATERLOO — Estell “Mary” Howard Burrell, 71, of 16919 Highway 72 West, widow of Cecil Edward “Pete” Burrell, died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at her home.
A daughter of late Ressie Stelle Galyon Howard and Harold Howard, she was the former owner of the Saluda River Truck Stop.
Survivors include a son, Cecil Burrell Jr. of Waterloo; a daughter, Catherine B. LeGros of Oxford, N.C.; two brothers, W.T. Whelchel of Belton and Jessie R. Whelchel of Napa, Calif.; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Services are 3 p.m. Sunday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens Chapel Mausoleum, conducted by the Rev. Darrell Rooks.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Harley Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of a sister-in-law, Anna Knox, Highway 72 West, Waterloo.

Alberta Freeman
AIKEN — Alberta Freeman died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at the Mattie C. Hall Health Care Center in Aiken.
Born in Edgefield, she was a daughter of Inez Settles Freeman Brown and the late Cleveland Freeman. She graduated from Edgefield High School and Greenwood Vocational School of Nursing and attended Lander College. She retired from Self Regional Medical Center and was voted Nurse of the Year in 1982. A member of Liberty Spring Baptist Church, she was a member of the Sunday School, a former member of the Women’s Missionary, Senior Choir and Ushers Board and a former Adult Sunday School teacher. She was also a former secretary of the Springfield Baptist Singing Convention.
Survivors include her mother of Trenton; a brother, Ulysses Freeman of Troy; two sisters, Luetricia Sprowl of Greenwood and Brenda Freeman-Behlin of Trenton; three stepsisters, Verda Murcier, Mamie Lee Gilchrist and Carrie Freeman; five stepbrothers, Roosevelt Haskell, Curtis Haskell, the Rev. Robert Haskell, the Rev. William Haskell and George L. Brown.
Services are 2 p.m. Sunday at Liberty Spring Baptist Church, 1347 Walker Road, Edgefield County, conducted by the Revs. Henry Merriweather and James Reynolds. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Albert McKie, MacArthur Settles, David Talbert, Raymond Mack, Willie Brown and Willie Harrison.
Honorary pallbearers are members of Edgefield High School Class of 1959 and staff/friends at Self Regional Medical Center and Mattie C. Hall Nursing Center.
Flower bearers are nieces, cousins and church Missionaries.

Emma McFerrin
GREENWOOD - Emma Ruth McFerrin, 89, resident of 124 Hill & Dale Drive, died July 19, 2002 at National Health Care of Greenwood.
Born in Greenwood County, June 6, 1913, she was a daughter of the late George Lafayette and Mary Jane Wilson McFerrin. She was a graduate of Greenwood High School and Lander College.
Ms. McFerrin retired from Duke Power Company with 35 years service.
A member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church and the Earnest Workers Sunday School Class of the church, she was also a past member of the Lander Evening Club.
She was predeceased by four sisters, Leila Kemp, Louise Lanier, Alma Park and Minnie Hanna and a brother, George W. McFerrin.
Surviving are three nieces, Dalene Gorham, Mary Eakin and Jane McFerrin; a nephew, Eben Hanna; three great-nieces, Dixie Funderburk, Mary Ann Easler and Susan Reid; a great-nephew, Tommy Hanna.
Funeral services will be conducted 4PM Sunday at Rehoboth United Methodist Church with Rev. Joseph Curtis officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will Stan Davis, Hilty Dodgen, Charlie Luquire, Ray Riddle, Ebie Grier and Clifton Eakin.
Honorary escort will be members of the Earnest Workers Sunday School Class of Rehoboth United Methodist Church and retirees and members of the Duke Power Company Retirees Club.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 3PM Sunday.
The family will receive friends in the church Social Hall immediately following the service.

Hilda Rish
LEESVILLE - Services for Hilda Boozer Smith Rish, 78, will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. Sunday from St. Mark Lutheran Church with the Rev. Bill Ebener officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be members of the Church Council. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Mark Lutheran Church Hand Bell Fund, 3178 Denny Hwy., Prosperity, SC 29127. Visitation will be Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Barr-Price Funeral Home Historic B-L Chapel.
Mrs. Rish died Thursday, July 18, 2002. Born in Saluda County a daughter of the late Luther M. and Elvira Merchant Boozer. She was an active member of St. Mark Lutheran Church serving as the first female Council Member, was a member of WELCA, the Church Choir, and SS Teacher. She was a graduate of Newberry College and retired from B-L Schools. Mrs. Rish was a member of the Lex. Co. Retired Teacher's Association, the NEA and SCEA and was a member of Farm Bureau. She owned the Barn Campground.
Surviving are sons, Gerald Smith of Greenwood; Brian Smith of Leesville; a daughter, Claire Smith of Leesville; a brother, Earl Boozer of Louisa, VA; sisters, Ruth Nichols of Pelion; Joan Mills of Prosperity; 6 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her first husband, Norbert Smith and her second husband Alton Rish; a brother, L. M. Boozer; and sisters, Dorothy Hipp and Carolyn Hutto.

Floyd Simmons
HODGES — Floyd Monroe Simmons, 76, of 5910 Highway 25 N., husband of Eunice Ross Simmons, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at his home.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Claude Monroe and Sarah Goodman Simmons. He was a World War II Navy veteran. Formerly employed by Grendel Mills, he retired from Monsanto and was of the Church of God faith.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Leroy Simmons of Hodges and Tommy Simmons of Greenwood; a daughter, Ann S. Ballard of Sharon; two sisters, Gladys S. Hill of Greenville and Ann M. Harter of Abbeville; seven grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Sunday at Blyth Funeral Home, conducted by the Revs. James Young and Richard Saxton. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Chris Simmons, Tim Ballard, Dennis Moore, Bryan Simmons, Ron Smith and Luke Simmons.
Honorary escorts are Dr. Pendergrass and staff, along with Earl Blizzard, Bobby Suits, Ronnie Owens, Eddie Yeldell and Walt Echols.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Ahmad Tyrese Harkness
ABBEVILLE — Ahmad Tyrese Harkness, infant son of Tony and Dorothy Ford Harkness, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
Survivors include his parents; and grandparents, Annie Ruth Harkness, Dorothy Mae Ford and Thomas Dunlap.
Graveside services are at 11 Tuesday at Harbison Cemetery.
