Willie Clifford Clark
SALUDA — Willie Clifford Clark, 86, widower of Cora Lee Williams Clark, died Friday, April 16, 2004 at Saluda Nursing Center.
Born in Saluda County, he was a son of the late James and Lelia Brown Clark. He was a member of New Salem C.M.E. Church.
Survivors include four sons, Willie C. Clark Jr., Wade Clark and Robert Clark, all of Saluda and Nathaniel Clark of Johnston; a daughter, Nora Lee Stevens of Saluda; a brother, James Clark Jr. of Washington , D.C.; five sisters, Ida Bell Roper of Edgefield, Zera Attaway of Saluda, Lannie Mae Stevens and Pauline Green, both of Washington , D.C., and Beulah Smith of Johnston; 25 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild.
Services are 3 p.m. Thursday at New Salem C.M.E. Church, conducted by Minister Annette Mathis, assisted by the Rev. Sam Stevens. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers and flower bearers are family and friends.
Butler & Sons Funeral Home is in charge.

Lawrence E. Cobbler
SALUDA, SC – Lawrence Edward Cobbler, 70, of 1474 Old Cherokee Trail, died Monday, April 19, 2004, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Saluda County, August 3, 1933, he was the son of the late Sammie Lee, Sr. and Clara Bell McCarty Cobbler. Mr. Cobbler was a US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He worked in construction for 40 years and retired from Brothers and Harrison Construction. He was a member of the Saluda County Coon Hunters Association and a member of Saluda Church of God.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Alice Hastings Cobbler, three children, Laurencine Adams of Silver-street, Lynn Snelgrove of Leesville and William Lawrence Cobbler of Saluda; two step-sons, Carl Jennings and Calvin Jennings both of Greenwood; two sisters, Frances Adams of Batesburg-Leesville and Ann Rushton of Saluda; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
A brother, Sammie Lee Cobbler, Jr. and a sister, Doris Brinson preceded Mr. Cobbler in Death.
The greatest joys in Mr. Cobbler’s life were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and running his beagles.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Thursday, April 22, 2004, at Saluda Church of God with Rev. John Notter, Rev. Ronald Smalley and Rev. Mark Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Butler UnitedMethodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 9PM Wednesday evening at Ramey Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Saluda Church of God Building Fund, 201 S. Jennings St., Saluda, SC 29138.

Sandra Ann Griffin
McCORMICK — Sandra Ann Griffin, 51, wife of Leroy Griffin, died Tuesday, April 20, 2004 at her home after a sudden illness.
Born in McCormick, she was a daughter of Betty Middleton Martin and the late Charlie F. Martin. She was a member of Holy Spring Baptist Church, a 1971 McCormick High School graduate and a nutrition technician at Abbeville Learning Center.
Survivors include her mother of Greenwood; four daughters, Yolanda Key and Somekia Key, both of Greenwood, Tawyla Key of McCormick, Marisa Key of the home; four sisters, Theresa Martin of McCormick, Virginia Moore and Karen Duncan, both of Greenwood, Ronetta Martin, U.S. Army, Korea; four brothers, Davie Middleton, Charlie Martin and Stephen Martin, all of Greenwood, Tommy Martin of Greenville; five grandchildren.
The family is at the home, Route 1, Box 9-A, Pierce Drive.
Services will be announced by Walker Funeral Home.

John Martin
GREENWOOD – John Warren Martin, Jr., 50, affectionately known as “Little John” of 130 Sheffield Road, husband of Kaye McKellar Martin, died Tuesday, April 20, 2004 at his home.
Born in Anderson, he was the son of Mary Nicholson “Ibbie” Martin and the late John W. Martin, Sr. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and Lander College and had served as an Athletic Director, coach and teacher with Greenwood School District 50 before retiring on disability. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the SC High School League and the Greenwood Country Club.
Surviving are his wife of the home; a son, John W. “Trey” Martin, III of Greenwood; a daughter, Meredith R. Martin of the home; his mother, Ibbie Martin of Greenwood and two sisters, Nancy Greenwood of Manalapan, FL and Patricia Ann Rains of Greenwood.
Burial will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 22 at Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
A memorial service celebrating John’s life will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jeff Lethco officiating. Visitation will follow in the fellowship hall.
Pallbearers will be Roger Dent, Bill Gray, Alan Hammond, Thomas Harvey “Bubba” Harvin, Jr., John Howard, Stan Ligon, Bill Lloyd, Steve Lloyd, Billy Sligh and Kenneth Lee Timmerman.
Honorary escort will be Hunter Bell, Archie Booker, Judy Bourne, Judy Braxton, Terri Calebs, Sam Cochran, Frank Eck, John Eppelsheimer, Paul Gantt, Bob Hammond, Rip Horne, Steve Ivie, Kathy Ligon, Johnny Long, Mike McDowell, Wells Massengill, Jim Martin, Tom Miller, Ann Salway, Dwayne Sargent, Kathy Scott, Debbie Tackett, Tee Tolbert, Kim Wasson, Tommy Wilson, Mike Bartley and Lewis Rollins.

Callie Poore
WARE SHOALS — Callie Manley Poore, 96, widow of James F. “Jim” Poore, died Tuesday, April 20, 2004 at National Health Care in Greenwood.
A native of Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Marvin and Olga Hancock Manley. She retired from Riegel Textile Corp. and was the oldest member of Ware Shoals First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty P. Pitts of Spartanburg; a brother, James Marvin “Bo” Manley of Ware Shoals; three sisters, Lois McCurry of Anderson, Dora Boone and Mary Beacham, both of Greenwood.
Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Wayne Wicker. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Jim Pitts, Bob Pitts, Mike Pitts and Michael Pitts III, Jason Farmer, Jim Manley, Alan Ross, Chris Pitts and Robin Pitts.
Visitation is 1-2 Thursday at the church.
Family members are at their respective homes.

Buddy Rushton
GREENWOOD – James Ralph “Buddy” Rushton, Jr., 67, of 806 Highway 221 South, husband of Faye Wilson Rushton, died Monday, April 19, 2004.
Born in Greenwood, he was a son of Florence Louise Rauton Rushton and the late James Ralph Rushton, Sr. He retired in 1998 from Atlanta Construction and served in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
Surviving is his wife of the home and his mother of Greenwood; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Jocelyn Rushton of Conyers, GA; a daughter, Cindy R. Urban of Pueblo, CO; four sisters, Rusty McDaniel and Betty Bodie, both of Greenwood, Patsy Capel of Seneca and Jeanette Johnson of North Augusta; four grandchildren, Trisha Urban of the home, Twyla Urban and Tessa Urban, both of Colorado and Hazel Marie Rushton of Conyers, GA; a special cousin, Tom Witt; and his father-in-law, Billy Coursey.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Mt. Moriah Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. David Little officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church.
The family is at the home.

Barbara Worrill
WARE SHOALS, SC – Barbara Anne Taylor Worrill, 57, of 29 Green Acres Dr., wife of Charles B. Worrill, died April 19, 2004 at Georgia Medical College in Augusta, GA.
Born in Newberry County, she was the daughter of the late Harold Young and Thelma Catherine Whitaker Taylor of Laurens. She attended Welcome Presbyterian Church and was retired from Self Regional Healthcare.
Survivors include her husband of the home, two sons, Charles (Chris) Worrill and wife Carol along with grandchildren, Matthew Ryan, Sara Ashley, Emily Lynne and Mary Elizabeth Worrill all of Radcliff, KY, and Brian (Pat) Worrill, Rock Hill; two sisters, Mrs. Earl (Sara) Robertson and Mrs. Bill (Frances) Robertson both of Laurens, two brothers, Ronald (Ron) Creswell Taylor of Greenwood, Samual Allen (Sam) Taylor and wife Becky of Williamston.
She was predeceased by a brother Donald Franklin (Donnie) Taylor and a sister Elizabeth (Libby) Taylor Northcraft.
Funeral Services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at Parker-White Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne Wicker officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
The family is at the home and will receive friends at Parker-White Funeral Home Wednesday, 7-9 PM.

Fred Bates
Frederick LeRoy Bates, Ph.D., 79, resident of 1110 Marshall Road, widower of Hettie Dowtin Bates, died April 24, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born December 2, 1924 in Tennleytown within the District of Columbia in what is now known as Northwest Washington , DC, he was a son of the late Robert Alvaro and Ruth Cornelia King Bates. During World War ll he joined the US Army Air Corps and served as a Ball Turret Gunner on a B24 plane. He did 50 missions with the 15th U.S. Air Army Air Corps in Italy.
Fred entered George Washington University on the basis of his war record and scores on achievement tests he took when leaving the service. During his time at George Washington he married Hettie Dowtin of Troy, SC who was then working in the office of the Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force. Fred completed both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in less than three years.
After receiving his PhD degree in 1954 from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, he worked as a faculty member at NC State College, Cornell University, Louisiana State University and in 1963 he became Head of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work at The University of Georgia where he continued to work in various capacities until 1995. He did research, assisted by Hettie, in Guatemala, Italy, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Mexico, Peru, Thailand, and Indonesia.
During the course of his career Fred published six books, hundreds of journal articles, and dozens of research reports.
Surviving are two sons, James F. Bates of Greenwood and Robert Mark Bates of Atlanta, Ga. Two granddaughters, Sarah and Rachel. Three sisters, Elizabeth Bandu of Seabrook, TX., Margaret Amundson of Frederick, MD., and Audrey Schwartz of Silver Springs, MD. A brother, Robert P. Bates of Silver Springs, MD.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Tuesday from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J. Christopher Leonard officiating.
Burial will be in the Troy Cemetery.
The family is at the home of Jim and Mary Jane Bates, 410 Gatewood Drive and will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 to 2 Tuesday afternoon.

Ruby Glenn
ABBEVILLE — Ruby Holmes Glenn, 80, of 564 Sharon Church Road, widow of Andrew Glenn, died Saturday, April 24, 2004 at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Hartwell, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Robert and Catie Carnes Holmes. She was twice married first to the late Hubert R. King. She was a retired textile employee with Burlington Mills and a member of The Salvation Army Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Pauline K. Stephens of Abbeville; two sisters, Jessie Lou Madden and Florence Goldsmith, both of Hartwell, Ga.; and two brothers, Thomas Holmes and Paul Holmes, both of Anderson.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rock Springs Baptist Church in Lula, Ga., Burial is in the church cemetery.
The body is at Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home.
Visitation is 12-2 Tuesday at Rock Springs Baptist Church.

John G. Kelly Jr.
John Granberry Kelly, Jr., 84, of 1110 Marshall Road, husband of Theresa “Terry” Cheatham Kelly, died Sunday, April 25, 2004 at Wesley Commons Health Care Center.
Born in Holly Hill, he was a son of the late John Granberry Kelly, Sr. and Cherry Harvey Kelly. Upon graduating from Clemson A&M College in 1941, where he received a B.S. degree in textile engineering, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp. By 1942, he was in Australia and then New Guinea piloting A-20 attack bombers. Upon returning home as a captain, he married Theresa Cheatham of Greenville in June 1944. After the war, he joined the newly formed United States Air Force, working in intelligence, but in 1948, returned to Greenville to work for his father-in-law, Charles E. Cheatham, Sr. at Cheatham Greenville Hardware. In the early nineteen sixties, he opened his own hardware store, Greenville Area Supply. After 20 years in the Air Force Reserve, he retired as a Lt. Colonel. Later, he sold his hardware business and, with his wife, spent time traveling, working around his house and yard and enjoying visits with an ever growing family of descendants, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Kelly was a Mason and a charter member of TROA (now MROA). He was a charter member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church, Greenville, where he taught Sunday School for a number of years, was a member of the Christian Fellowship Class and had served as chairman of the Administrative Board. He was an affiliate member of Main Street United Methodist Church, Greenwood.
Surviving is his wife of the home; three sons, John Granberry Kelly, III and his wife, Nona, of Lawrenceville, GA, Charles Richard Kelly and his wife, Donna, of Greenville and James E. “Jim” Kelly and his wife, Kathy, of Greenwood; three sisters, Mrs. Douglas (Cherry Dell) Lee of Kingston, Ontario, Mrs. Malcolm (Elizabeth) Gray of San Antonio, TX and Mrs. DeArmand (Jule) Canaday of Greenville; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Charles E. Cheatham, Jr. of Charleston and Mrs. Edward L. Cheatham of Greenville; six grandchildren and six great- grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Matthew United Methodist Church, Greenville, with the Rev. Harry Workman and the Rev. DeArmand Canaday officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Greenville.
Pallbearers will be nephews Douglas Lee, Malcolm Gray, Melvin Gray, Bill Canaday, Sam Cheatham, Mark Cheatham and Charlie Cheatham.
Honorary escort will be the members of the Christian Fellowship Class of St. Matthew United Methodist Church, members of the Hut Class of Main Street United Methodist Church and members of the MROA.
A gathering of friends will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Wesley Commons, Asbury Hall, Greenwood and on Wednesday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at St. Matthew United Methodist Church, Greenville.
The family is at the home of his son, Jim Kelly, 130 Bailey Circle, Greenwood.

Eugene Mohr, 75, of 402 Fairforest Drive, husband of Lula Mohr, died Sunday, April 25, 2004 at Wesley Commons Health Care Center.

Bern Pleunik
Bernard Joseph Pleunik, 82, of 120 Limerick Road, husband of Alberta Fritsch Pleunik, died Saturday, April 24, 2004 at his home.
Born in Denora, Pa., he was a son of the late Adolph and Grace Bassett Pleunik. He served as president of ICO Corp., a subsidiary of Westinghouse Electric, in Puerto Rico for seven years before coming to Greenwood, where he served as General Manager, retiring after 45 years of service. He was an Army veteran of WWII and a member of the American Legion Post 20. He was a member of the Greenwood Country Club, GCC Senior Golf Group, Senior Bowlers, and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Diane Paterniti of Ohio; a brother, Robert Pleunik of Holland, OH. and a grandson.
Mass of the Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, conducted by Father Richard Harris. Entombment is in Oakbrook Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Harley Funeral Home, with the rosary being recited at 8.
The family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church building fund, 110 E. Laurel Ave., Greenwood, S.C. 29649.
