Britynn Haug

Funeral Service for Britynn Constance Haug, Kinanana wankantanya kinwan winyan, “The butterfly that flies highest woman” five month old daughter of Landon and Jill Haug of Watertown, SD was held on Friday, June 24, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Community Center, Agency Village, SD with Pastor Richard Felch officiating.

Pianist was Mary Beth Kirk.

Pallbearers were Brandon Haug, Terrence Haug Jr., Tim Dahl and Arlan Spronk.

Honorary Pallbearers were Lucas Ryan, Bowen Ryan, Drake Haug, Jonah Lombaard, and C. S. Mott Children’s Hospital.

Interment was in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Watertown, SD.

Visitation was on Friday, one hour prior to the Funeral Service.

The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton, SD was in charge of arrangements.

Britynn was born on January 18, 2011 at University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, MI to Landon and Jill (Dahl) Haug.

Before her birth she was diagnosed with a heart problem.

Britynn passed away on June 17, 2011 at the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, MI.

Britynn is survived by her parents, Landon and Jill (Dahl) of Watertown, SD; three brothers, Lucas Ryan, Bowen Ryan and Drake Haug of Watertown, SD; grandparents, Lynelle Haug of Sisseton, SD; Charles Greeley of Sisseton, SD; Rick and Heather Dahl of Watertown, SD and Tim and Sherry Sesso of Rapid City, SD; great-grandparents, Marcella Haug of Sisseton, SD; Duane and Barb Dahl of Watertown, SD and Daisy Spronk of Pipestone, MN and several aunt, uncles and cousins.

Britynn was preceded in death by her great-grandparents, Constance Dahl, Geritt Spronk, Bernard Haug and Lillian Greeley.

Walter Nicolai

Walter Nicolai, of Montevideo, MN and formerly of Maynard, MN and Sisseton, SD, died on Sunday, June 19, 2011 at the Chippewa Co-Montevideo Hospital at the age of 94.

Committal services were held on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sisseton Cemetery in Sisseton, SD with Rev. Suzanne Benidt officiating.

Walter Julius Nicolai was born on July 2, 1916 to Emil and Emily (Keller) Nicolai.

He grew up in the Montevideo/Maynard, MN area and attended rural schools.

On January 12, 1946 he was united in marriage to Cora Eide in Seattle, WA.

They made their home in the Montevideo area, where he farmed and worked at an elevator.

They moved to Minneapolis, MN where he worked for a number of years as a church custodian before retiring.

Following his retirement, they lived at a home on Belle Taine Lake for about six years before moving to Sisseton, SD.

Following the death of his wife Cora, he moved to Montevideo, MN and lived at Brookside Manor until moving to the Luther Haven Nursing Home about two years ago.

He loved to fish, enjoyed the outdoors and especially enjoyed his family.

He is survived by two sons: William (and Linda) Nicolai of St. Paul, MN and Ronald (and Rosemary) Nicolai of Sisseton, SD; four grandchildren: Stacy, Andrea, Luke and Ryan; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Bill Nicolai of Roseville, MN; two sisters, Margaret Larsen of Montevideo, MN and Marion Harvey of Clara City, MN, as well as by a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Cora in 1998; and by brothers, Morris, John and George Nicolai.

The Anderson Funeral Home of Montevideo, MN was in charge of arrangements.

Cecil “Hepan” Renville

Funeral Service for Cecil Anthony “Hepan” Renville Sr., 84, of Agency Village, SD was held on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Community Center, Agency Village, SD, with Senior Catechist John Cloud III officiating.

Pianist was Billy Kohl. Drum Group was Shortfoot Creek.

Pallbearers were Romeo Renville, Lonnie Rodlund, Jerome Renville Sr., Gabriel Rodlund, Creighton Renville, Evan Rodlund, Brian Rodlund Jr., and Kip Renville.

Honorary Pallbearers were Larry Goette, Faye Johnston, Delano Renville, Charlie Wyman, Duane Gronau, Francis “Kojak” Heminger and all of Cecil’s friends and The Veterans Groups of the Sisseton Area.

Interment was in the Sisseton Cemetery, Sisseton, SD, with Military Rites by the Sandmen.

All Night Wake Services were held on Tuesday, and Wednesday, at 7:00 p.m. at the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Community Center.

The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD was in charge of arrangements.

Cecil was born on October 24, 1926 in Sisseton, SD to Mason and Rose (Barker) Renville.

He grew up and attended school at Peever and Old Agency. He worked for area farmers and broke horses.

Cecil served in the United States Army from March 14, 1951 to March 25, 1953, where he received the Army offlag Occupation (Germany) Badge.

Following his discharge he worked for many area farmers.

Cecil was united in marriage to Mabel Spider.

He liked to attend rodeos, and he was a baseball player, he also liked to hunt and fish and was a grass dancer.

He loved to play and joke with his grandchildren and liked to play the slots.

Cecil passed away on June 18, 2011 at his home in Agency village, SD.

Cecil is survived by one son, Cecil Renville Jr., one step daughter, Cheryl Spider of Agency Village, SD, one sister, Tina Renville of Agency Village, SD, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Cecil was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, special granddaughter, Lakota Renville, several other grandchildren, and brothers and sisters, Cyril, Mason Jr., Loretta, Lacquetta, Gladys, and Lila.

Glenn Smith

Mundwiler Funeral Home announces the death of Glenn Smith, age 85 of Wilmot, SD who passed away June 22, 2011 at Golden Living Center in Milbank, SD.

Funeral services were Friday, June 24, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Wilmot, SD.

Rev. Dr. DeVern Schwenn officiated and burial was in the Wilmot City Cemetery.

Visitation was Thursday, June 23, 2011 at the church from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. and continue Friday, June 24, 2011 one hour prior to the service.

Military honors were provided by American Legion, Drake-Sorbel Post 64. flag

Casketbearers were grandsons: James Johnson, Jack Johnson, Justin Johnson, Hubert Smith, Blake Laird, and Travis Smith.

Music was provided by Ken Cameron, vocalist and Sharon Ammann, organist.

Glenn Harlan Smith was born September 28, 1925, in Rochester, MN.

He was the son of Hubert Warren and Ella Caroline (Bruesch) Smith.

He served in the United States Army, enlisting on June 29, 1944, and was honorably discharged on May 17, 1946.

While in service, Glenn was awarded the Purple Heart.

He returned to South Dakota and was united in marriage with Bernice Fokken on July 18, 1948.

Glenn was a rural mail carrier for many years.

He was also a lineotype operator for the Wilmot Enterprise.

He worked at the Wilmot Locker Plant and was also employed at his brother’s grocery store in Chancellor, SD.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Wilmot, SD.

Bernice passed away September 8, 1995.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Douglas and wife Brenda Smith of Mustang, OK; Becky and husband Guylis Johnson of Wilmot, SD; Glenda Smith of Wilmot, SD; daughter-in-law Shelley Smith of Aberdeen, SD; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles Smith of Jackson, CA; one sister, Gertrude Crown of Wilmot, SD; and dear friend, Bev Lentz of Bird Island, MN.

Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Bernice; son, Randy; grandson, Guylis, Jr.; two brothers: Lloyd and Verne.

Mundwiler Funeral Home of Milbank, SD was in charge of the arrangements.

C. R. Williams

Funeral arrangements for Clarence Rafelle Williams, 94, of Mobridge, SD were at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at the United Congregational Church in Mobridge, SD.

Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge, SD.

Visitation was from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to services.

Military honors were provided by the Mobridge Parker-Browder American flag Legion Post #4.

Clarence passed away June 18, 2011 at his home in Mobridge.

Clarence Raffelle Williams was born December 24, 1916 in Corning, IA to Harvey M. and Ethel (Lantz) Williams.

In 1918 the family moved to a ranch near Okaton, SD, and later moved to a succession of farms in southeastern South Dakota.

Clarence attended rural schools until seventh grade.

He attended Argonne Consolidated High School where he participated in baseball, basketball and track, graduating in 1937.

During high school he also worked as a farmhand for two brothers, Martin and William (Pheba) Larsen.

He entered Huron College in September 1937.

He participated in football, track and music and supported himself by working in restaurants, private homes, and for the college.

In 1939, Clarence joined Company “C”, 109th Engineer Regiment of the South Dakota National Guard.

The regiment was federalized in November 1940 and in February 1941 was sent to Camp Claiborne, LA.

Based on experience with light trucks with the Huron Delivery Service, Clarence volunteered for truck driver duty.

Following the attack at Pearl Harbor, the 34th Division of which the 109th Engineers was a part was sent to Fort Dix, NJ.

While at Fort Dix, Clarence transferred to the United States Air Corps.

During flight training he was joined in marriage to Shirley Lavonne Dearborn, at Selma, AL, December 22, 1942.

They resided in Selma until Clarence completed advanced flight training and received his wings and was commissioned a Second Lt.

Clarence was transferred to Eglin Air Force Base, where he served as a tow pilot, gunnery instructor, and Squadron Commander.

He and Shirley lived in Crestview, FL during the time of his service at Eglin AFB.

A daughter, Lavonne Claire was born to them at the Eglin Air Force Hospital.

Following the end of the war in 1945 Captain Williams was separated from the service.

He returned to Huron College and completed his Bachelors Degree in May 1946 and a son, Ronald Ray was born to Clarence and Shirley in July before he began his first teaching assignment at Sisseton, SD. Clarence was a classroom teacher and track coach.

After summer graduate studies at the University of Colorado he transferred to South Dakota State University to complete his Masters Degree in Education and for 24 years was the high school principal.

During that time he also began a new phase of military service by joining the U. S. Air Force Reserve, retiring in 1974 as a Lt. Colonel.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School, and serving as a Deacon and Ordained Elder.

As an educator he was a member of the South Dakota High School Principals Association, National High School Principals Association, American Vocational Association and the National Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools Commission.

He was named an Outstanding High School Principal in 1982.

He was a member of the American Legion, Masonic Lodge, and Kiwanis Club, serving as president and as Division Lt. Governor.

He and Shirley retired from the Sisseton School and moved to Mobridge, SD in June 1982.

Clarence became active in several community activities, including the United Congregational Church, The Mobridge Senior Citizen Center, The Mobridge AARP Chapter, The Civic Concert Association, and the Mobridge Chamber of Commerce.

Clarence, as a member of AARP served at several volunteer levels, including state legislative committee, assistant state director, state director and instructor for the AARP “55 Alive” Mature Driver Program.

He was also a member of the Oahe Area Retired Teachers Unit.

Clarence’s favorite activities were boating, fishing, hunting, gardening, traveling and reading.

Clarence and Shirley have taken several memorable tours together, both in the U.S. and abroad.

He loved to have friends and former students come to fish and hunt with him.

He was happiest when hunting with his son-in-law and his two grandsons.

Clarence is survived by his wife Shirley, daughter Lavonne (John Salzsiedler) of Mobridge, SD; son Ron Williams of Fergus Falls, MN; two grandsons, John (Sheila) Salzsiedler, of Apple Valley, MN and James (Jeana) Salzsiedler of Mayer, MN; five great-grandchildren, Grace, Grant, Jake, Jordyn and Julia.

He was preceded in death by his parents and nine brothers and sisters.

Memorials may be directed to United Congregational Church or the A. H. Brown Library Foundation.

Lawrence "Larry" Dale Sims

(October 03, 1955 - October 09, 2012)

Funeral Service for Lawrence D. “Larry” Sims, 57 of St. Louis Park, MN will be Friday, October 12, 2012 at 1:00 PM at the Cahill Funeral Chapel with Filmore Simon CLP Officiating.

Casket Bears will be Phillip Mundy, Mark Affeldt, Susan Starr, Travis Starr, Brandon Borchardt and Josh Bramley.

Interment will be in the Lake Traverse Presbyterian Cemetery, Rural Browns Valley, South Dakota.

There will be visitation on Thursday, October 11, 2012 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Cahill Funeral Chapel.

Lawrence Dale Sims was born on October 3, 1955 in Akron, Ohio to Ernest and Donna (Rolf) Sims.

Larry attended school in Minneapolis.

Larry was united in marriage to Julie Mundy on August 23, 1981 in New Ulm, MN.

They made their home in the Minneapolis area.

Larry worked for Douglas Corporation as a Quality Engineer up to the time of his death.

Larry enjoyed tropical fish and coin collecting.

Larry passed away on October 9, 2012 at the Methodist Hospital, St. Louis Park, MN.

Larry is survived by his wife, Julie of St. Louis Park, MN; three daughters, Candace Romero of Minnetonka, MN, Melissa Affeldt of Maple Grove, MN and Carla Sims of Minneapolis, MN; two brothers, Steve and wife, Debbie Sims of Kansas, Mike Sims of Kansas; two sisters, Wanda Sims of Minneapolis, MN and Sandra (Larry) Jones of Minneapolis; three grandchildren, Brandon Borchardt and Kristeena Romero both of Minnetonka, MN and Nicholas Affeldt of Maple Grove, MN; and his mother-in-law Loretta Mundy of Minneapolis, MN; Larry was preceded in death by his parents.

Ann German

Funeral service for Ann K. German, 80, of Peever, SD was held on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, SD, with Rev. Suzanne Benidt officiating.

Organist was Estelle Pearson with special music by Jenny Nelson and Donald Backman.

Pallbearers were Brian Hoffman, Chad Merkel, Kaleb and Kalen Lechner, and Greg and Dan German.

Honorary Pallbearers were all of Ann’s family and friends.

Interment was in the Green Mound Cemetery, Leola, SD on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation was on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Cahill Funeral Chapel and one hour prior to the Funeral Service at the Church on Wednesday.

The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD was in charge of arrangements.

Ann Katherine Feichert was born on May 7, 1931 at Long Lake, SD to Jacob and Charlotte (Wacker) Feichert.

She grew up and attended school in Long Lake Township.

After her education she was married and the couple moved to Forbes, ND.

She later moved back to Leola, SD in 1965.

She was married to Elwood Lechner on June 19, 1968 in Leola, SD.

The couple farmed north of Leola and sold the farm in 1981, and retired in the Leola and Eureka area.

Elwood passed away in November of 1994.

Ann moved to Aberdeen, SD where she met and married Donald German on April 10, 1999 at Peever, SD.

The couple made their home near Peever, SD until health problems caused Ann to enter the Tekakwitha Living Center in Sisseton, SD where she passed away peacefully on June 17, 2011.

Ann liked to sew, quilt, garden, and care for flowers.

She loved to travel, fish, dance, and cook German food.

Ann is survived by her husband, Donald German of Peever, SD; seven children, Les and Robin Merkel of Wheat Ridge, CO; Jamie and Laurie Merkel of Dickinson, ND; Douglas and Faith Merkel of Scott Township, PA; Carla and Todd Gohl of Redding, CA; Jeffrey Merkel of Aberdeen, SD; Glen and Sandy Merkel of Cheney, WA, and Faye and Jay Gunther of Frederick, SD; one stepson Raymond and Rita German of Peever, SD; one sister, Delores and Luther Hoffman of Leola, SD; fifteen grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and eight step-great-grandchildren.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents, her stepmother Mary, her husband Elwood, one son Curtis, one granddaughter Denise, one brother Albert, and one sister Dena Gehring.

Donald J. Murphy

Donald J. Murphy, 56, Browns Valley, MN, died Monday, June 20, 2011, at the Coteau des Prairies Hospital in Sisseton, SD.

Mass of Christian burial was Thursday, June 23, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Graceville, MN, with Father David Breu officiating.

Music was provided by organist Donna Arens.

Vocalists was Deb Stueve, Jean Costello, Sandy Bauer and Chris Weick.

Burial was in the Graceville Consolidated Cemetery, Graceville, MN.

The Eggers Funeral Home of Rosholt, SD was in charge of the arrangements.

Donald was born March 23, 1955, in Graceville, MN, to James and Nancy (Arens) Murphy.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. Barnabas Catholic Church in Barry, MN.

He grew up on a farm north of Barry, MN.

After graduation he farmed for a couple of years.

He followed his dreams to purchase Spring Creek Trout Ranch in Wisconsin where he moved his family.

Donald worked at the Park Falls Paper Mill.

Later he moved to his present home on the South Dakota side of Traverse Lake.

He always loved to fish, hunt, and enjoyed gardening and selling produce.

Survivors include his daughters, Jessica (Mark) Senger of Greenfield, WI; Terri (Josh) Blaha of Independence, WI and Amy Murphy of Chippewa Falls, WI; special friend, Chris Luebben and her daughter Grace of Glidden, WI; his parents, Jim and Nancy Murphy of Graceville, MN; four grandchildren, Ryan, Aiden, Hunter and Aaliyah; brothers and sisters, Dan Murphy of Naples, FL; John (Mitzy) Murphy of Graceville, MN; Connie (Dean) Mikkelson of Sioux Falls, SD; Jerry (Julie) Murphy of Beardsley, MN; Judy (Greg) Murphy of Mesa, AZ and Joe (Katie) Murphy of Graceville, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Donald was preceded in death by a brother, Charles.
