James D. McDonald
May 14, 1935 - Feb. 16, 2009

James D. McDonald, 73, of Highmore, passed away Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at the Highmore Healthcare Center.

Memorial service will be at 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, at Luze Funeral Home in Highmore with Roger Day officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Highmore Cemetery.

James Duncan was born May 14, 1935, in Highmore, to Milo and Genevieve (Hoxsey) McDonald.

He enjoyed his high school years very much. He was active in most all sports with basketball being his favorite. Music was also high on his list. He was in mixed chorus, mixed vocal ensemble, vocal soloist, brass sextet and “A” band playing the cornet. He was in the speech club and one of the seven students who had been together from kindergarten through grade 12 in the Highmore School, graduating in 1953.

His profession was that of meat processing of which he spent many years. After high school, he continued to work with his dad at McDonald’s Meat Market. On Sept. 25, 1979, he married Lorraine Ackerman in Pierre. Shortly after, he purchased a meat processing plant in Redfield. He sold the plant in 1991, and they moved to the Black Hills area. In 1995, he became manager of a super market meat department in Newcastle, Wyo., but in 1997 his wife died, and in 1998 he returned to Highmore until his passing.

Jim is survived by his brother: Gary (Donna) McDonald, of Highmore; sister: Aline Callaghan, of Yucatan, Mexico; aunt: Phyllis Johnson, of Watertown; two nieces: Janet (Jimmie) Nicolaus, of Mitchell, and Kathy Callaghan, of Yucatan, Mexico; and three nephews: David (Amy) McDonald, of Wichita, Kan., Mark (Yolanda) Callaghan, of Yucatan, Mexico, and James (Ruby) Callaghan, of Yucatan, Mexico.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Milo and Genevieve McDonald, and wife: Lorraine McDonald.

Memorials may be directed to the Highmore Healthcare Center, 421 Eighth St. SE, Highmore, SD 57345.

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Jim’s arrangements.

Edmund “Jake” Jacobsen
Feb. 9, 1920 - Feb. 15, 2009

Edmund Seaver ‘Jake’ Jacobsen, 89, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, at his home in Brookings, surrounded by family and loved ones.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Brookings. Burial is at St. Thomas More Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, with a 6:30 p.m. wake service at Rude’s Funeral Home.

Edmund S. Jacobsen was born Feb. 9, 1920, in Kobe, Japan, to Edmund L. Jacobsen and Lois (Klein) Jacobsen, who were serving as missionaries. He was the second of five siblings. They returned to South Dakota in 1923, where Jake attended rural school in Peoria Bottom (now under the Oahe Reservoir) northwest of Pierre. He graduated from Pierre High School in 1938, where he was captain of the football team. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from South Dakota State College in 1942. He was united in marriage to Betty Jo Deane on May 28, 1942, in Brookings.

In 1944, Jake enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. The war ended while he was in pilot training in Amarillo, Texas. After serving in the military, he went to work for the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks, designing and overseeing construction of facilities for the game department. In 1962, he joined his lifelong friend, Charles Bowman, as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service division of Indian Health.

He designed and oversaw the construction of several water and sewer projects serving Indian Reservations and towns in the Aberdeen, Anchorage, Alaska, and Albuquerque, N.M., area offices. After retirement from the Indian Health Service in New Mexico, he returned to Alaska to work for the state of Alaska’s Village Safe Water Program. In 1987, he retired and moved to Brookings.

Betty Jo died on April 8, 1997, in Sioux Falls. He married long-time family friend, Isabelle Elliott, on Sept. 1, 1998.

He was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Parish, the Brookings Elks, Golden K and served on the Priority One Committee.

Jake was a professional engineer and registered land surveyor. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, RVing, camping, gardening, flying, South Dakota history and crossword puzzles.

Jake is survived by his wife, Isabelle, of Brookings; six sons: Edmund “Joe” (Pat) Jacobsen, of Pierre, Harry (Joanne) Jacobsen, of Brookings, James Jacobsen, of Anchorage, Alaska, Scott (Susan) Jacobsen, of Cottage Grove, Minn., Peter (Dani) Jacobsen, of Cottonwood, Ariz., and Paul (Kathy) Jacobsen, of Olathe, Kan.; two stepsons: Burt (Elaine) Elliott, of Aberdeen, and Bernie (Brenda) Elliott, of Oakdale, Minn.; two step-daughters: Sheryl Novacek, of Thief River Falls, Minn., and Randee (Jeff) Hudson, of Antioch, Ill.; stepdaughter-in-law Donna Elliott, of Watertown; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and one sister, Lois Doner, of West Lebanon, N.H.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Betty Jo; sister, Phyllis; brothers, Eric and Lewis; stepson William Elliott Jr.; and granddaughter, Jennifer.

Pat Feeney
Aug. 20, 1916 - Feb. 13, 2009

Pat Feeney, 92, of Pierre, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2009, at St. Mary’s TCU.

Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. A prayer service will be at 7 p.m., Tuesday, at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. Services will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 18, at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery.

Isburg Funeral Chapel of Pierre has been placed in care of the arrangements.

Patrick was born Aug. 20, 1916, in Pierre, to Michael Feeney and Essie (Skates) Feeney. He was preceded in death by his wife, Yvonne Feeney, in 2006, his parents and his brothers, Michael, John and Andrew Feeney, and his half-brothers, Kenneth and Wilbur David.

He is survived by his children: Michael (Marcia) Feeney and Patricia (David) Hagen. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Shawn (Jerre) Feeney, Saxon Feeney, Erin O’Brien and Elizabeth (John) Pickerill; his great-grandchildren: Taylor Rose Feeney, Joseph Pickerill and Carolyn Pickerill; and his brothers: Charles (Shirley) Feeney and James (Linda) Feeney.

His early years were spent on a ranch located in northeast Haakon County that was started by his father, Mike Feeney, who came from Ireland at the age of 8 years. He was the oldest of the six Feeney brothers who were all raised on the ranch. He graduated from Pierre High School in 1934. He then continued in ranching and ran the family ranch following the death of his father in 1936. In 1942, he married Yvonne Carlson, of Phillip.

Pat, along with John Maher Sr., was instrumental in the formation of Basin League Baseball of South Dakota. Pat also managed and played with the Pierre Cowboys for several years.

Pat spent all of his life in the cattle business, including a bull-leasing program which he started and ran for more than 50 years. He was also involved in many different ventures, including oil drilling in Wyoming, uranium mining in South Dakota, Wyoming and Utah, and iron mining in Arizona.

He invested in race tracks in North Sioux City and also was one of the partners who started the Plains in Huron and the Plateau in Watertown, which included hotels, restaurants and bowling alleys.

But his main love of business was in cattle and bull leasing, which he continued until he was 90 years of age. One of the highlights of the business was a trip in 1972 to Ireland, where he visited his father’s birthplace, England, France and Germany to investigate what was called “exotic cattle.” He later raised many of the breeds that he saw on that trip.

He was dedicated to his family and many friends, especially the “Good Old Boys.” A special thank you to Dr. Holland and the dedicated staff of St. Mary’s TCU. Memorials are preferred to St. Mary’s or Countryside Hospice.

Estella Frost
Jan. 8, 1915 - Feb. 12, 2009

Estella “Marie” Frost, 94, Pierre, passed away at St. Mary’s Healthcare Center TCU on Feb. 12, 2009. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 16, at Feigum Funeral Home, Pierre, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Faith Lutheran Church, Pierre. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery. An online register book can be found at www.feigumvanlith.com.

Estella “Marie” Frost was born Jan. 8, 1915, in Florence, to Estella Josephine (Morrison) Carroll and John William Carroll. She received her formal education in Waubay and South Shore. She moved with her family to Harrold in 1931 at the age of 16. She moved to Pierre opening her home to allow her siblings to complete their formal education.

She married Howard James Frost on Dec. 31, 1944, at the First Church of Christ in Pierre. She remained in Pierre until her death.

Marie loved taking care of her family. She cherished family get-togethers; especially Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. She was very proud of her yard work and enjoyed gardening.

Marie was a member of the First Church of Christ, where she held positions in the Ladies Council and Missionary Circle. She also was a Sunday school teacher. She held offices in the PTA at McKinley School for 20 years and was a room mother for all her children throughout their school years. Marie was also a Girl Scout leader.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Carol Ree, Pierre, James (Trudy) Frost, Pierre, Joy (William) Atyeo, Sturgis, Candace (Kenneth) Potter, Pierre, Dan (Cheryl) Frost, Pierre, Mary (David) Schweigert, Pierre; grandchildren, Tamyra Ree, Todd Bice and daughter Sadie, Timothy (Tonya) Atyeo and children Austin and Ella, Scott Atyeo, Chad (Kim) Robinson, Cynthia (Troy) Ogan, Christopher Frost, Aric (Tracy) Frost and son Avry, Sarah Frost, Jacob Schweigert and Jennifer Carr, and Joshua Schweigert; special family friends Arlo Campbell and Chad Davis; one brother, George (Gladys) Carroll, Federal Way, Wash., one sister, Clara Mae Hoffman, Highmore, and sisters-in-law Mae Carroll, Pierre, and Bonnie (Fred) Baade; and brother-in-law Wilfred (Linda) Frost, Custer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Frost, an infant son, John Mark, grandson Garry Wayne Robinson, a sister, Lilla Feller, and three brothers, Dan Carroll, John Carroll and Charles Carroll.

Memorials may be directed to Countryside Hospice of Pierre.

Kenneth Darland, 90

Kenneth Darland, 90, South Jordan, Utah, passed away quietly at home surrounded by family on Feb. 6, 2009.

Kenneth was born in Alpena in 1918. He was preceded in death by his wife, Libbie, his brother, Clarence, and sisters Edith, Thelma, Arvella and Helen. His kindness and generosity touched many lives.

He is survived by five children and spouses, 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 14, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Pierre. Interment took place at Riverside Cemetery.

Richard Tolton, 78

Richard Tolton, 78, of Pierre, formerly of Midland, died Feb. 11, 2009, at Maryhouse in Pierre.

Survivors include two sons, Steven Tolton, of Reva, and James Tolton, of Midland; two daughters, Sandra Lobmeyer, of San Antonio, Texas, and Nancy Schofield, of Midland; 10 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandson.

Visitation will be held prior to the services.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Feb. 16, at St. William’s Catholic Church in Midland, with the Rev. Ron Garry as celebrant.

Interment will be at the Midland Cemetery.

David Trebesch, 50

David Trebesch, 50, of Pierre, died Monday, Feb. 9, at the Rosebud Hospital. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 13, at Isburg Funeral Chapel. Services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 14, at Isburg Funeral Chapel, with burial at Riverside Cemetery.

David was born on Sept. 14, 1958, in Pierre, to Kenneth (Snooks) and Margaret (One Road) Trebesch. He grew up in Pierre and graduated from T. F. Riggs High School. After high school, David went on to attend Mitchell Vocational Institute, graduating with an electrical construction and maintenance degree.

He lived most his life in Pierre. He briefly lived in Rapid City, where he worked on building the Rushmore Mall.

While living in Pierre, David worked construction and as a carpet installer. He enjoyed fishing in his spare time.

David is survived by his daughter, Rachel Flax, of Watertown; two brothers: Darrell Trebesch, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and John and wife Denise Trebesch, of Pierre; and his stepmother, Ann Trebesch, of Wahpeton, N.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
