Helma (Bietz) Konrad was born Tuesday, December 7, 1909 on a farm east of Tripp to Fred and Pauline (Ziebart) Bietz. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kaylor. They moved to Kaylor, where Helma attended school through the 9th grade. She loved to read and write. She was united in marriage to Walter Konrad on December 20, 1927, also at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Together they farmed north of Kaylor until moving to Tripp in 1957. Helma became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society of Tripp on November 29, 2005 due to the big ice storm. This was an opportunity to make more friends and she enjoyed visiting with the residents and staff. Helma enjoyed being with people, whether playing cards or just visiting with friends. She was blessed with near-perfect recall regarding names, dates, and events. Helma tried to live her Christian faith and family and church were her highest priorities. She appreciated those around her, being optimistic and always seeing good in others. Helma passed away on Easter Sunday, April 24, 2011, having attained the age of 101 years, 4 months, and 17 days. Blessed be her memory.

Helma is survived by four children: Norman (Leola) Konrad of Tripp, Marlene Nuss of Tripp, Dwayne (Bonnie) Konrad of Burlington, Colorado, and Harlan (Judy) Konrad of Watertown; a sister, Linda (Bill) Rhodes of Port Angeles, Washington; a sister-in-law, Frances Konrad of Parkston; 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Fred and Pauline Bietz, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, on October 12, 1996; son Willard Konrad on September 20, 2002; son-in-law Floyd Nuss on March 29, 2002; a grandson, John Konrad; and a great-grandson, Thomas Konrad.

Andre Ernest Olson

Age 70

Andre Ernest Olson was born Sunday, December 22, 1940 at Gayville, South Dakota to Marvin and Vera (Nyrop) Olson. He was baptized into faith at the Gayville Lutheran Church. Andre traveled with his family in his youth. Andre enjoyed swimming and listening to his mother play the piano and taking long walks. He lived in Gayville during his younger years and lived in Redfield before coming to the Menno-Olivet Care Center 1997. Andre passed away on Monday, April 4, 2011 at the age of 70 years, 3 months and 12 days.

Andre will be remembered by his sister, Linda (Olson) Gibson and husband Gary of Tyndall; two nieces: Debbie Schiltz of Gayville and Brenda Dockendorf of Tyndall; three nephews: Kevin Gibson of Springfield, Brian Gibson of Wayne, Nebraska and Brad Gibson of Tyndall, and all of their families. He is also survived by many cousins and several great-nieces and -nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles.

Alton Edgar Winckler

Died March 24, 2011
Age 74

Alton Edgar Winckler was born January 14, 1937 near Avon, South Dakota to Philip and Ida (Stoebner) Winckler. He was baptized May 6, 1937 at Neuburg Congregational Church and confirmed June 11, 1950 by Rev. R.W. Rieger, also at the Neuburg Congregational Church. He attended Dewald Country School near Avon through the 8th grade. He served with the South Dakota National Guard. Alton was united in marriage to Delores Delzer on January 13, 1961 at the Congregational Church in Kaylor. He was a member of Frieden’s Reformed Church, where he served on the Consistory, the Foundation, and as Treasurer. Alton passed away on Thursday, March 24, 2011, having attained the age of 74 years.

Alton’s memory will be cherished by his wife, Delores, of Avon; six children: Kimberly Winckler of Sioux Falls, Lori (Nick) Schulte of Sioux Falls, Lisa (Kevin) Van Zee of Hayti, Susan (Dean) Baumberger of Colton, David Winckler of Avon, and Paul (Laura) Winckler of St. Louis, Missouri; thirteen grandchildren: Travis (Emily) Winckler, Ethan and Austin Schulte, Andrew (Katy) and Ashley Van Zee, Callie, Evan, Aden, Josie and Jaxon Baumberger, and Benjamin, Emily, and Caleb Winckler; and two sisters: Goldie Winckler of Tyndall and Rosaline (Richard) Wootton of Yankton.

In addition to his parents, Philip and Ida Winckler, Alton was preceded in death by an infant brother, Melvin.

Violet Velda Thiesse

Age 81

Violet Velda Thiesse was born Wednesday, April 24, 1929 on the family farm near Tripp, South Dakota to Henry and Rose (Stoebner) Mehlhaff. She graduated from Parkston High School and earned her teaching degree from Sioux Falls College in 1951. She was united in marriage to Laverle Thiesse and they farmed near Tripp. Over the years, Violet taught school at Ellsworth, Minnesota and in Scotland for many years. She enjoyed music and was choir director at the Olivet Methodist Church for many years and directed the “Miracles of Jesus” pageant. After their retirement, Laverle and Violet made their home in Tripp. In her later years, Violet moved to Parkston. She enjoyed traveling and sightseeing. She passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2011 at the Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell, having attained the age of 81 years, 10 months, and 27 days.

Grateful to have shared Violet’s life are her three children: Sally (Dennis) Boehmer of Sioux City, Iowa, Todd (Christa) Thiesse of Tripp, and Blake (Erin) Thiesse of Chicago, Illinois; eight grandchildren: Shawn, Matthew, Christopher and Alicia Boehmer, Philip and Rebecca Thiesse, and Sierra and Ryan Thiesse; and a sister, Laverna Mehlhaff of Chicago, Illinois.

In addition to her parents, Henry and Rose Mehlhaff, she was preceded in death by her husband, Laverle Thiesse, a grandson, Garrett Thiesse, and two brothers, Edward Mehlhaff and Donald Mehlhaff.

Viola Ann Mikuska was born Wednesday, May 17, 1916 at Tripp, South Dakota to Christian and Pauline (Diede) Geigle. She was baptized and confirmed in the First American Lutheran Church in Tripp, where she played the organ for many years. She graduated from Tripp High School. Viola was united in marriage to Ruben Mikuska on July 13, 1935 at Parkston. She worked for a dentist in Tripp and later at the Mikuska Store. Viola began working at the Tripp Good Samaritan Center on the day it opened and worked there for sixteen years. Later, she started a daycare center in her home, which she operated for eleven years. She loved quilting and marked quilts for many people not only in the area, but as far away as Germany. Viola was a devoted homemaker and loved taking care of her home. She also enjoyed bowling as a pastime. She was a lifelong member of the First American Lutheran WELCA. She was an American Legion Auxiliary member for 65 years. Viola passed away on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Avera St. Benedict Health Center in Parkston, having attained the age of 94 years, 10 months, and 2 days.

Viola’s memory will be cherished by her son, Richard and wife Charlotte Mikuska of Palm City, Florida; a grandson, Ken and wife Sheryl Mikuska of Littleton, Colorado; and one sister, Iona Charles of Sioux City, Iowa.

In addition to her parents, Chris and Pauline Geigle, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ruben Mikuska, a brother, Elmer Geigle, and a sister, Beverly Reimnitz.

Duane Carl Blachnik

Duane Carl Blachnik was born Monday, April 17, 1944 in Yankton, South Dakota to Carl and Viola (Blaha) Blachnik. He attended country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Scotland High School in 1962. After high school, he served two years in the Army Reserves and nine years in the Springfield National Guard unit. Duane married Mary Ann Murray on September 24, 1983. Duane started his 40-plus year career in trucking as a truck driver for Ray Diede. He drove for many companies over the years: he drove flatbed for Joe Drotzmann, and for seven years, he and his wife, Mary Ann, drove as a team for All-American, Elton Wek, Alumax and last for Ron Schoellerman. He was an excellent driver and his logbooks were always in A1 shape. He always kept in contact with his driving buddies and some of them called him daily. He knew every mile marker, Interstate roadway and where all the truck stops were. For the past ten years, Duane was in failing health and on nice days he would head uptown in his chair to play pinochle at the Hide-Out and VFW. He loved winning a couple of bucks! God Bless you guys!! Duane passed away on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at the Avera Yankton Care Center at the age of 67 years.

Duane is survived by his wife of 27 years, Mary Ann of Scotland; his son Charles (Krickett) Blachnik and granddaughter Kadi of Granite Falls, North Carolina; his daughter, Heather (Jay) Weeks and three grandchildren, Olivia, Owen and Zeb, of Hickory, North Carolina; his stepchildren: Jeff, Scott, Julie and Mark; three step-granddaughters: Bridgett, Brianna, and Alexis; two step-great-grandsons: Teyton and Keatan; two sisters: Renee (Loren) Mehlhaf of Mitchell and Diana (Roger) Vanness of Parkston; three nieces and two nephews; his special “Auntie Dee”; many cousins; his best friends Harold (Delores) Barkl of Cle Elum, Washington and Leland (Barb) Papik of Mission Hill; and his pet, Emma Louise, whom he loved dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Viola Blachnik.
