Chris Coble
20 October 1969 - 12 April 2009

Funeral services for Chris Coble, age 39, of Fayetteville will be conducted at 10AM Wednesday at Higgins Funeral Home with Bro. Don Russell officiating. Burial will follow in the Blanche cemetery. Mr. Coble passed away Sunday April 12th at Lincoln Medical Center.

He was a native of Lincoln County and was the son of Phillip and Faye Sulser Coble who survive. Mr. Coble was employed by Fayetteville Public Utilities as working foreman and was a member of the Prosperity A.R. P. Church. He served on the Lincoln County Fair Board, was an avid hunter, special father and husband.

Survivors include his wife Missy Hergert Coble of Fayetteville, three children Zachary Barnes, Dillon and Mason Coble all of Fayetteville, parents Phillip and Faye Sulser Coble of Fayetteville, two brothers Jeff Coble and wife Stephanie and Justin Coble and wife Elizabeth, Maternal grandparents G. W. and Mamie Sulser, mother in law Mary Hergert and several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles. Visitation with the family will be after 4PM Tuesday at Higgins Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Earl Forrest Bennett
27 June 1930 - 13 May 2009

Funeral services for Mr. Earl Forrest Bennett, age 78, of Fayetteville will be conducted Friday at 2PM at Higgins Funeral Home with Rev. Van Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Lebanon cemetery. Mr. Bennett passed away Wednesday morning May 13th in VA hospital in Murfreesboro.

He was a native of Lincoln County and the son of the late Benny Forrest and Della Franklin Bennett. Mr. Bennett was a veteran of the Korean War and a member of the American Legion for over 50 years. He was a retired from Amana Refrigeration, was a farmer and a member of the Baptist Church. Mr. Bennett’s hobby was riding horses.

Survivors include his wife Trula Wiseman Bennett of Fayetteville, two daughters Debbie Jane Pendergrass and husband Chris of Fayetteville and Tracie Delane May and husband Jeff of Fayetteville, three sons Earl Dwayne Bennett and wife Kim of Fayetteville, Perry Wayne Bennett, of Columbia, TN and Donnie Lane Bennett of Fayetteville, two sisters Margie Campbell of Fayetteville and Pauline Philpot of Fayetteville and 12 grandchildren.

Visitation with the family will be Thursday 5-8PM at Higgins Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Mary Ann Cowan Tucker
24 June 1943 - 29 May 2009

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Ann Cowan Tucker, age 65, of Petersburg will be conducted at 11 AM Monday at Higgins Funeral Home with Bro. Roger Cothron and Bro. Dean Pardon officiating. Burial will follow in Carter Hills cemetery. Mrs. Tucker passed away Friday morning at her residence.

A daughter of the late John Willie and Josie Beddingfield Cowan, she was a native of Lincoln County, a homemaker, and a member of Blanche Church of God.

Survivors include her children Dora Barnes of Petersburg, Debbie Bailey of Taft, Dan Tucker of Decherd, Billy Tucker of Scottsboro, AL, Rita Jobe of Petersburg, and Sammy Tucker of Taft, 11 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and sisters Annie Sue Warren of Mulberry, Fannie Lou Sanders of Hot Rock, and Jenny Bell Brown of Harms. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her ex-husband Carleen Columbus Tucker, two children Rosemary and Carl Tucker, two brothers, Thomas, Roy and Harry Cowan and one sister Allen Cowan.

Visitation with the family will be from 5-8 PM Sunday at Higgins Funeral Home.

Ethel Holley Poarch
26 March 1914 - 7 June 2009

Funeral services for Mrs. Ethel Holley Poarch, age 95, of Fayetteville will be conducted at 11 AM Tuesday at Higgins Funeral Home with Bro. Richard Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill cemetery. Mrs. Poarch passed away Sunday Morning at Lincoln Skill Care.

A daughter of the late Rufus Washington and Clema Harwell Holley, she was a native of Giles County, formerly employed with Serbin, was a housekeeper and a homemaker, and a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include 2 sons Bill and Charles Poarch of Fayetteville, 3 daughters Cleta Sheehan of Hendersonville, Janice Gentry of Fayetteville, and Linda Wilcox of Madison, AL, special son-in-law Junior Hobbs, 19 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Garland Poarch who passed away in 1980, son James Poarch, daughters Joan Leatherwood, Mary Frame, and Sue Hobbs, 2 grandsons Aaron Hobbs and Jeff Leatherwood, sister Ola Payne, and brother R.B. Holley.

Visitation with the family will be from 9-11 AM Tuesday at Higgins Funeral Home.

Robbye F. (Howard) Martin
30 September 1920 - 26 June 2009

Funeral services for Mrs. Robbye F. Martin, age 88, of Fayetteville will be conducted at 1 PM Sunday at Higgins Funeral Home with Rev. Van Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Martin passed away Friday morning at Lincoln Medical Center.

A daughter of the late Samuel Wayne and Hassie Love Paschall Howard, she was a native of Turyear, TN, formerly employed as an LPN, was a homemaker, and a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter Camille Crenshaw of Murfreesboro, grandson Josh Crenshaw of Murfreesboro, sister Patty Rasberry of Millington, TN, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family will be from 11-1 PM Sunday at Higgins Funeral Home.

Dorothy (Gautney) Dickey
22 July 1924 - 26 July 2009

Funeral services for Mrs. Dorothy Dickey, age 85, of Fayetteville will be conducted at 11 AM Wednesday at Higgins Funeral Home with Rev. Van Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Gardens beside her husband Lois Kyle Dickey who passed away in 1970. Mrs. Dickey passed away Sunday morning, July 26th, at Lincoln Medical Center.

A daughter of the late Elbert Benton and Ruth Elora Pitts Gautney, she was a native of Lincoln County, formerly employed with Jonathon Logan, Serbin, and Lee, and a longtime member of Fayetteville First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her sons Hugh Dickey and wife Beth of Fayetteville and Kyle Dickey and Donna of Fayetteville, daughter Karen Jones and husband Ernie of Brentwood, grandchildren John Marshall Dickey and Anna Claire Dickey, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by 5 brothers and 2 sisters.

Visitation with the family will be from 5-8 PM Tuesday evening at Higgins Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Fayetteville First Baptist Church.

William Burton Towry
25 May 1927 - 28 July 2009

Funeral services for Mr. William Burton Towry, age 82, of Fayetteville will be conducted at 11AM Friday at the Fayetteville Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church with Dr. Calvin Todd officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Gardens with Higgins Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Towry passed away Tuesday July 28th in Donalson Skilled Care Center.

He was a native of Lincoln County, son of the late Shields and Pauline Towry. Burton took over Towry Gin Company from his father and later founded Towry Enterprises, a trucking company and grain buying business in Kirkland, TN. He, along with his wife Billie Lindsay Towry, were owners and operators of Towry Gin Company and Grainery. He was owner of Quality Car Sales, a member of the Fayetteville Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church and a Shriner. Mr. Towry was a member of the Fayetteville Lions Club where he was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship which is the Highest Honor presented by the Lions Club. After his wife, Mr. Towrys second love was flying. He received his pilot’s license in 1953. He was a devoted and loving father and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years Billie Lindsay Towry of Fayetteville, daughter Linda Lane-Overton of Dothan, AL, sons Burt Towry of Brentwood, TN and Bill Towry of Fayetteville, grandchildren Michael Lane of Nashville, Lindsay and Jacob Towry of Brentwood and Shields Towry of Fayetteville and one brother Hugh Towry of Fayetteville.

Visitation with the family will be Thursday from 4-8PM at Higgins Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to ARP Church or the Fayetteville Lions Club.

George Lofton Pitts, III
16 June 1948 - 17 September 2009

George Lofton Pitts, III of Austell, GA, originally of Fayetteville, died Thursday evening (September 17, 2009) in Atlanta. He was the son of Grace Sumner Pitts of Fayetteville and the late George L. (Buck) Pitts, Jr. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother Robert Palm Pitts.

A native of Lincoln County and a 1966 graduate of the old Central High School in Fayetteville, he attended Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro and Alverson Draughton Business College in Huntsville for an education in computers and accounting. Mr. Pitts was the vice-president of accounting, secretary/treasurer and director for Cagles, Inc., a poultry company based in Atlanta. His career with Cagles spanned over 35 years. He was also a member of the Round Table of the Georgia Poultry Federation. A member of the Methodist church, Mr. Pitts was an avid supporter of youth athletics and served as president and treasurer of the South Cobb Youth Athletic Association and was a past president of the Pebblebrook High School Athletic Booster Club.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife Phyllis Obermier Pitts of Austell and also a native of Lincoln County, daughter Julie P. Schlageter and husband Jay of Greenwood, SC, son George Lofton Pitts IV and wife Laurie of Register, GA, sister Bridget P. Jaffe and husband Edwin of Memphis, grandchildren John Cullen Schlageter, Logan Pitts Schlageter, and George Buckley Schlageter all of Greenwood, and George Lofton (Quinn) Pitts V, Hattie Lauren Grace Pitts, Linden Gable Pitts, and Garner Levi Pitts all of Register, nieces and nephews Boone S. Pitts and wife Larissa of Greeneville, SC, Catie and Rob Jaffe of Memphis, Leah Conners of Memphis, Dan Conners of Fairview, TN, great-niece and great-nephew Ginger Grace Pitts and Crockett Sumner Pitts of Greeneville, and sister-in-law Margaret Conners and husband John of Fairview.

Bagpipes will play in the distance at the memorial service Sunday at 2 PM at Higgins Funeral Home with Rev. Tommy Ward officiating. The final disposition will occur at the family farm on Old Railroad Bed Road in Pearl City where Mr. Pitts’ ashes will be spread by airplane.

The family requests that memorial donations be sent to the American Cancer Society, First United Methodist Church of Fayetteville, or the charity of your choice.

Judith Evelyn (Walker) Vessell
12 November 1918 - 29 September 2009

Funeral services for Mrs. Judith Walker Vessell, age 90 of Flinville will be conducted at 10AM Saturday at Higgins Funeral Home with Bro. Joe Parks officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hills cemetery beside her husband Luther B. Vessell. Mrs. Vessell passed away Tuesday morning at her son’s residence.

She was a native of Franklin County and the daughter of the late William Coy and Carrie Louise Harrison Walker. She was a homemaker and a member of the Shady Grove Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Donna Dye of Fayetteville, Pamela Weeks of Clifton, NJ, one son Christopher Vessell of Flintville, one brother Glenn Walker of Las Vegas, Nevada, five grandchildren Brandie Rogers, Monette Hancock, Christopher Vessell, Jenna Dye and Clint Dye and five great grandchildren Kyla Rogers, Rylin Rogers, Kolby Rogers, Casen Stevenson and John Brevin Hancock.

Visitation with the family will be Friday evening 5-8PM at Higgins Funeral Home.

Jewell (Hall) Bennett
31 October 1922 - 29 September 2009

Funeral services for Mrs. Jewell (Hall) Bennett, age 86, of Taft will be conducted at 11 AM Friday at Higgins Funeral Home with Bro. Van Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Kirkland cemetery. Mrs. Bennett passed away Tuesday morning at Lincoln Medical Center.

A daughter of the late Lossie and Finetta Thompson Hall, she was a native of Lincoln County, formerly employed at Redstone with 27 years service, a homemaker, a member of Taft/Blanche Homemakers Club, helped with the Meals on Wheels program, a Sunday School teacher, a leader of the WMU in various churches in Lincoln County, lived on Scott Orchard Rd. for 57 years, and a member of First Baptist Church, Fayetteville.

Survivors include her daughters, Joyce Giffin of West Palm Beach, FL and Wanda Southerland of Taft, son Joe Paul Bennett of Park City, grandchildren Duane Southerland, Kathryn Southerland, Laura Miller, and Nathan Giffin, great-grandchildren Dalton Southerland, Mason Southerland, and Connor Giffin, step-great-granddaughter Brenda Juarez, brothers Edward Hall of Athens and Bill Hall of Fayetteville, sisters Ramona Mercer of Jackson and Doris Diven of Punta Gorda, FL.

Visitation with the family will be from 2-8 PM Thursday at Higgins Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Cerebral Palsy Foundation or the American Chrohn’s & Illiatis Foundation.
