Judge Joseph J. Nigro

Nigro, Joseph J. “Joe”, age 86, of South Knoxville, passed away Wednesday, August 25, 2004 at Baptist Hospital. He was of the Catholic faith and attended Colonial Heights United Methodist Church since 1960. He was a member of the choir and a member of J. Ray Stewart Sunday School Class. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a BS degree and where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epislon Fraternity and a JD degree from the University of Tennessee Law School in 1943 where he was a member of the Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity. He attended law school and graduated with his wife, Ann Kirby Nigro. He began his legal practice in 1944. During these years, he shared a practice with the late Judge Jim Haynes, Judge George Balitsaris and his wife, Ann K. Nigro. Mr. Nigro served as President of the Young Democrat Club and served as Co-Chairman of the Stevenson-Kefauver Campaign. Later, he joined the Attorney General’s Office for 12 years. In 1975, he was appointed Criminal Court Judge for Knox County and after retirement served as Special Judge in Criminal and Circuit Courts. Preceded in death by parents, Louis A. and Maria V. Nigro; sisters, Lena and Inez Clemente.

Survivors

Wife of 61 years, Ann K. Nigro; daughter, Joanne Nigro Simpson; grandson, Robert Joseph Simpson; sisters, Connie Clemente and Rose Shook; brother-in-law, Anthony Clemente of New York; brother, Dr. Ralph Nigro and wife, Angela of Pennsylvania; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Wilda and Clay Barr; several nieces and nephews.

Service

The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM Sunday at Colonial Heights United Methodist Church. A Memorial Service will follow at 5:00 PM with Rev. Robert Countiss officiating. Interment icon service will be private at Woodlawn cemetery. Williams, Ralph E. Williams; sisters, Edith G. Willis Hale, Etta Mable Maxey, Alice Fay Williams, Hazel Fern Williams, Blanche F. Kneir Kirk, Gladys Marie Bates White. McDonald, Rev. Carl J., age 76, of Powell, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2002. He was an active member of Cedar Ridge Baptist Church. Founding Minister of Southside Baptist Church in South Knoxville. He was former Pastor of First Baptist Church in Ashland, Ohio. Also served as Pastor, teacher, Minister, in other states. He was a graduate of Bible Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He received his Doctorate of Divinity at Seaside Mission College in Florida. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp 5th Division where he served during World War II at Iwo Jima. He was preceded in death by parents, Carl and Lillie McDonald of Ashland, Ohio.
