Katherine Thomson Greiner-July 16, 2011

Katherine Thomson Greiner was an inspiring role model to others in her good works, forthrightness, and loyalty to her friends. Kay passed away on July 16, 2011 at the age of 81. For Kay, death came too soon, but in no better place than her beloved New Mexico.

Kay’s pioneering spirit and infectious humor entered the world on September 18, 1929 when she was born in Amarillo to Henry Thomson and Carol Shannon Thomson. The Thomsons had immigrated to Amarillo from Indiana where their extended family founded Wabash College. Growing up, she spent many a summer afternoon creating joyous childhood memories with her dear sister, Mary Carol Thomson.

Kay attended Waldemar Camp as a young girl, which sparked her love for the outdoors, sports, and teamwork; in adulthood, it inspired her to found a summer day camp for kids in Amarillo.

Kay was a cheer leader and proud graduate of Amarillo High School. Her many classmates became lifelong friends as well as a source of great comfort throughout her life.

Kay relished challenges, and this was evident in her decision to study a world away at Mills College in Oakland, California. But she was soon homesick for the Texan way of life so Kay returned to finish school and graduated from the University of Texas.

Before beginning her career, adventure further beckoned Kay and she seized the opportunity to travel all over Europe beginning by taking a freighter out of Galveston. It was truly the trip of a lifetime with her college friends.

Upon returning, Kay began her career in Dallas where she met her future husband Herbert Louis Greiner. Herb captured her heart with his unique Yankee style; they were married shortly thereafter and made their home in Amarillo.

Kay was a devoted mother to their two children, John Frederick and Edwin Thomson Greiner. She threw herself wholeheartedly into all of the children’s activities and showered them with unconditional love.

Her selflessness and commitment to volunteering led her to contribute many long years of service to the Amarillo Junior League, and she loved creating decorative arts that helped sustain the League’s charity work. Kay also loved participating in choir groups with many of her lifelong friends to bring joy to underprivileged and senior communities.

As Kay’s children began their lives, she channeled her boundless creativity and energy into new projects, one of which led her to become a successful entrepreneur, establishing her own interior design business.

Her delight came full circle when Kay was blessed with four grandchildren: Isabel, Gabrielle, Lauren and Camille who were the light of her life. She never missed a chance for her rich and meaningful life to influence her beloved granddaughters. Many a treasured family gathering revolved around the girls and their grandmother, Cake.

Kay loved New Mexico and in recent years she shared her love of art with her artist, friend and mountain house neighbor, Chris Morel.

In 1999, Kay was honored for her 50-years of membership in the Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity, the first Greek-letter fraternity known among women.

Kay is deeply missed and will be forever remembered by her husband, Herb Greiner, sons Thom Greiner, Rick Greiner and his wife Valerie, her cousin Roberta Terrell, and the Peggy Thompson Wolfe, Doug Thompson, and John Thompson families. She is also remembered by Herb’s extended family—sisters Priscilla and Helen. Kay is predeceased by her beloved sister Carol Thompson McKean.

In Amarillo, friends are invited to a visitation with the family from 5 o’clock in the afternoon until 8 o’clock in the evening on Thursday, the 21st of July at 2603 Hawthorne Drive.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning July 22nd at 10 o’clock at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with Rev. John Watson, officiating. Burial will be at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Kay’s memory to the charity of your choice.
