Mrs. Hohertz

Erna Emma Hohertz died Dec. 16 at the Hamilton Hospital. She was 99 yrs, 10 mo., 17 days of age.
Graveside funeral services were conducted Dec. 10 at Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton with Lee Berger officiating.
Mrs. Hohertz was born January 28, 1903 at Becka Mountain in Mills County, the daughter of Adolph Meissner and Emilie Tischler Meissner.
She was married to Ernest H. Hohertz on November 24, 1926. He preceded her in death on Nov. 24, 1963. She was a devoted wife and helpmate to her husband.
She is preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Alwine Hohertz, Tillie Sommerfeld and Frieda Sommerfeld and one brother Adolph Meissner.
Survivors include one sister Albertine Lange of Dodd City; a sister-in-law Frieda Meissner of Hamilton and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Jurney

Melvin Frank Jurney, 87, died of natural causes Nov. 2 in National City, Calif. Graveside services were held Nov. 9 in Winton, Calif. A celebration of his life was held in National City on Nov. 16.
He was born in Springdale on Feb. 2, 1915 and attended school in Shive and the surrounding areas.
Mr. Jurney was married to Rosa Lee Embrey in July of 1935. She preceded him in death in June of 1989.
Mr. Jurney moved to California in 1937 where he worked for the National Lead Company in El Portal. He later moved to Atwater and worked for the Elementary School District as head gardener for more than 35 years. He moved to National City in 1990 and was married to Lola Symmons in April of 1992. She preceded him in death in November of 1994.
He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in National City where he was very active in church work. He enjoyed gardening and visiting the shut-ins.
He is survived by daughters, Casandra Lee Walters and husband Hugh of Martinez, Calif.; Bonnie Sue Plant and husband Richard of Tucson, Ariz and Bettie Lue Pratt and husband Bill of Roseville, Calif.; granddaughters, Jennifer Robinson of Nashville, Tenn., Julia Walters of Walnut Creek, Calif., Anna Plant of Spring Valley, Calif.; grandsons, Randall Walters of Ft. Stockton, Steven Pratt of Katy and great-grandchildren, Noah and Abigail Robinson of Nashville and Andrew Walters of Ft. Stockton; sisters, Erlene Tucker of Gladewater and Juanita Holmes of Selma, Calif.

Mr. Massie

James Edward Massie 88 of Weatherford died in a Weatherford Hospital Dec. 16, 2002. Graveside funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Dec. 18 at Live Oak Cemetery with Rev. James Ballard officiating.
Mr. Massie was born August 6, 1914 in Hamilton County to G.C. and Zola E. Arnett Massie. In 1942 he went to work for G.D. in Fort Worth retiring in 1973 as a tooling engineer.
He was married to Jane Adams, to this union three sons were born. He later married Gloria Gibson.
He was a member of the Methodist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Joe Pat Massie of Tarpon Springs, Florida; Jim Massie of Benbrook and Mike Massie of Fallon, Nev.; five grandchildren; four step grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother Bernard Massie.
The family has requested those wishing to give memorials to give to their favorite charity.

Mrs. Hobdy-Fritz

Rosetta Fay Hobdy-Fritz, aka Fay H. Fritz, died Dec. 14, 2002 at the age of 87. Funeral services were Dec. 17. Burial followed at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Hamilton.
Mrs. Hobdy-Fritz was born in Hamilton, on October 10, 1915, the daughter of Dr. Will and Mrs. Kora Tucker Hobdy. She was married to William Francis (Frank) Fritz, University of Texas Law Professor,
on Dec. 26, 1937.
She is preceded in death by her two sons, David Lawrence Fritz and Kermit Edward Fritz; her brother and sister, William and Vera Hobdy.
Mrs. Hobdy-Fritz graduated from Southwestern University at Georgetown and received her Master’s degree from the University of Texas. For a period of time she lived with the noted author J. Frank Dobie and his wife while attending the University of Texas.
Mrs. Hobdy-Fritz taught school in several rural areas before teaching at Waco High School in Austin. During her career, she was also a cataloguer at Yale University and an architectural librarian at the University of Texas.
Mrs. Hobdy-Fritz was an avid traveler and traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe, often accompanied by her grandson, David Fritz II.
She was also interested in genealogy and was a member of the University United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Couples Plus Sunday School Class of the church and a charter member of the Austin Lawyers’ Wives Auxiliary.
Survivors include a grandson, David Lawrence Fritz II and
his wife, Mandy as well as eight nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers were her nieces and nephews, Judy Teague, Christa Butler, Jean Nagel, Doug Fuchs, Howard Fuchs, Anthony Fuchs, Henry Wood, and Roger Wood.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the William Francis Fritz Scholarship In Law, University of Texas Law School Foundation, 727 E. Dean Keeton, Austin, Texas 78705.

Mrs. Willis

Carol Arleeta Mc Clellen Willis died Monday, February 24, at her home in Austin. A memorial service was held in Austin, Feb. 25.
She was born in Galveston, December 22, 1934, the daughter of Roy and Arleeta McClellen. They precede her in death.
Survivors include her husband, J. C. Willis of Austin; her children, Belinda Schwarz of Virginia, Caryn Albrecht of Austin, Shirley Bear of Austin, and John Willis, Jr. of Texas City; a sister, Donna Anglin of Hamilton, a brother, Richard Mc Clellen of Colleyville and Hamilton; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, as well as a large extended family.

Mr. Walton

Herman Edward (Chuck) Walton, 89, of Hamilton died Feb. 21 at Hamilton. Funeral services were held Feb. 23 at the First Baptist Church in Hamilton with burial in Graves Gentry Cemetery.
Mr. Walton was born October 22, 1913, in Hamilton County, the son of Thomas Edward Walton and Eleanor Rogers Walton. He devoted his life as a public school educator, teacher, coach, principal, superintendent and Hamilton County School superintendent.
He was a member of Rock House Lodge # 417 at Hamilton, a member of Karem Temple in Waco and the First Baptist Church in Hamilton where he served as a deacon.
He was united in marriage to Sammie Gault at Placid, Texas. She preceded him in death on Dec. 7, 1973. On November 22, 1974 he married Alma Crouch Slaughter.
Survivors include his wife, Alma Walton of Hamilton; three children, Mary Helen Baxter of Lubbock, Charles E. Walton and his wife Sherry of Stephenville and Jane Ellen Kehey of Waco; 10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his stepson, Tom Slaughter and one brother Joe Garnett Walton.
Pallbearers were Joe Baxter, Johnny Baxter, Nick Walton, Bryan Cain, Joe Rodgers, Doug Young, Joel Walton and Tommy Boyd.
Honorary Pallbearers were Dale Chilton, Clyde Raibourn and Red Williams.

Mr. Landua

Erman Landua, 76, died Feb. 20 at Clifton Care Center. Graveside services were held Feb. 22 in the Cottage Hill Cemetery near Shive with Ron Roberts officiating.
He was born Aug. 14, 1926 in Shive, the son of John Martin and Jemima Janie Kincheloe. He attended school in Springdale.
Mr. Landua served in the U.S. Army in the area of Field Communications from July 14, 1954 – July 4, 1956. He enjoyed working on cars and tractors.
He was preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers and sisters.
Survivors include two sisters, Allie Angerman of Clifton, Lillian Riewe of Hamilton; a brother, Bailey Landua of Hamilton and a number of nieces and nephews.

Miss Newton

Jenny Michelle Newton, 31, died Feb. 19, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 22 at First Baptist Church of Hamilton with Dr. Tim Moody and Mark Williamson officiating. Burial was at East View Cemetery in McGirk.
Miss Newton was born Sept. 28, 1971 in Hamilton. She was a 1990 honor graduate of Hamilton High School where she was vice-president of the National Honor Society, competed at the regional level in cross country, track, UIL academic contests and was a varsity cheerleader, homecoming duchess and a member of the student council.
She attended Tarleton State University where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology on Dec. 17, 1994.
She then served three years in the United States Air Force, after which she returned to Tarleton and earned a Masters of Education degree in Physical Education on Dec. 17, 1999.
She was preceded in death by her father, Larry Leo Newton and her grandparents, Edna and Ozro Newton.
Survivors include her brother, Ryan Newton of Bedford; parents, Debbie and J.D. Roberson of Glen Rose; grandmother, Louise Chambers, also of Glen Rose; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Also, Lynda and Shannon Smith.
Pallbearers were: Kevin King, Thad Purcell, Aaron Calahan, Scott Carter, Richard Norris and Adam Carter.

Mrs. Calvert

Frances Drucilla Calvert, 87, died Feb. 22, 2003, in Hamilton. Graveside services were held Feb. 25 at Ridge Park Cemetery in Hillsboro with memorial service at Riley Funeral Home Chapel in Hamilton.
Mrs. Calvert was born April 28, 1915, in Hillsboro, Texas, the daughter of James W. and Ella Rasco Freeland. She was a former resident of Austin where she was an administrator with the Texas State Tuberculosis Assn. She worked at the State Hospital, and later became a realtor. Before her retirement in 1980, she was employed by the State Governor’s Office and served under several state governors.
After moving to Hamilton, Mrs. Calvert became active in numerous community projects as a member of the Woman’s Council, the Twentieth Century Club, the DAR, and the Genealogy Society.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and John David Pool of Hamilton; grandchildren, Michael E. Pool and his wife, Kristen, of Waco; Melissa Ross and her husband, Calvin, of Crawford; Rachel Pool of Dallas; four great-grandchildren, Nathan Pool, Jared Pool, Carlton Ross, and Caroline Ross.
Memorials may be made to Hamilton Public Library or Hamilton County Genealogy Society.

Mr. Carter

Billy Wesley Carter, 75, of Talihina, Okla., died Feb. 23 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26 at the Talihina Baptist Church with Rev. Hollis Bond and Rev. Mark Cook officiating. Burial will follow at the Old Talihina Cemetery under the direction of Talihina Funeral Home.
He was born Aug. 13, 1927 in Atoka, Okla., the son of W. Thomas and Gertrude Clapp-Carter. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Talihina, where he has lived for the past 15 years.
Mr. Carter was an active Red Cross volunteer who served at the Pentagon after 9-11 and the Olkahoma City Bombing as well as serving in Guam, South Dakota, Houston and Galveston.
He held the highest position a civilian can obtain with the Red Cross. He was an accountant by trade and worked in Africa for 15 years for Shell Oil Company.
Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Carter and a brother, Jerry Carter.
Survivors include three sons and a daughter-in-law, Billy D. and Deanna Carter, Randy Carter and Adam Carter; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and James Pelton, all of Houston; a sister and brother-in-law, Nina and Rex Reynolds; a grandson, Josh; two nephews and one niece; one aunt, Ruth Garrett and a host of friends.
