Josephine Nieto passed away Thursday, Feb. 28. She retired after 20 years of service at Project Bravo. She was preceded in death by eleven of twelve siblings. She is survived by nieces and nephews: Delma N. Bradford, Esther L. Spence, Carolina N. Thomas, Minerva N. Cadena, Delfa N. Spencer, Lucy Nieto, Carolina N. Antunez, Blanca N. Rosenheim, Eva Nieto, Olga N. Nunez, Lillian B. Kanselka, Roy Burgess, Louis N. Machuca, Edmundo Nieto, Ruben Nieto, Rolando Nieto, Arturo Nieto, Hernando Nieto, Tony Nieto and Humberto Nieto. Interment was at Evergreen Cemetery on Alameda.

Joe Maasdorf passed away Monday, Feb. 25, 2002. As a child, he immigrated to the U.S. from Germany with his family. He graduated from the University of Missouri, and became an avid fisherman. He was operations manager of Delphi Automotive Systems since 1968. He is survived by his wife, Wilette Masdorf; his son Michael Paul Maasdorf and daughter-in-law Alison Maasdorf; his daughter Christina Ann Maasdorf; and future son-in-law Jacob Donald Frietze.

Jacob Schut, M.D., passed away Thursday, March 7, 2002. Born in Buenos Aires, he became a psychiatrist and taught at the University of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson University and Texas Tech University. He worked at the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and was CEO of Sun Valley Regional Hospital. He belonged to Rotary International. He was a member of Rotary International and on the board of directors of the American Heart Association, El Paso Opera Company, El Paso Pro-Musica, El Paso County Medical Society, the Visiting Nurses Association, the American Diabetes Association and the West Texas Council on Alcoholism. He was preceded in death by his father, Julio Schut. He is survived by his wife Karen Schut; his mother, Natalia Schut; his sister Dora Schut; his brother, Luis Schut and sister-in-law Lydia Schut; his sons Erik Schut, William Schut and Alexander Schut; their mother Ann Cohen; nephews Andrew, Edward and Henry; and his great-niece Rebecca and great-nephew Elijah. Memorial donations may be made to the Animal Rescue League, P.O. Box 13055, 79913; the American Heart Association; Temple Mt. Sinai or the Visiting Nurses Association, P. O. Box 3628, 79923.

Lillian Gaignard Pine Simon passed away Saturday, March 2, 2002. She is survived by her daughter, Jane C. Vizcarrondo; her son, Clyde Pine, Sr.; her sister Lucille Lozzie; and three nieces, two nephews, eleven grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Interment took place on Tuesday, March 5, at Memory Gardens of the Valley in Santa Teresa, NM.

Bill E. Gable passed away Sunday, March 3, 2002. He served in the military, was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and the Vietname War, and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Association. He is survived by his ex-wife, Maria Gable; sons Michael Gable, Robert Gable, and John Gable and his wife Luann Gable; daughters Annette Gable, RoseMarie Gable and her husband Gene Barnes; five grandchildren: Vincent Gable, Montana Barnes, Robert Gable, David Gable and Nathan Gable; brother Junior Paul Gable; nephews John Wiggins and Douglas Wiggins; niece Nancy Gable; and his aunt, Marie Van Blaricon. Interment was in Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

Ernesto Rojo passed away Thursday, March 7, 2002. A lifelong resident of El Paso, he was a math instructor for El Paso Community College. He was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio and Josefina Rojo Gonzalez. He is survived by his wife Lucila Rojo; his son, Ernesto Rojo II; his daughter, Jessica Rojo, and three brothers and two sisters. Interment was in Restlawn Memorial Park.

William Henry Cass, LTC, U.S. Army Ret., passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2002. He was a retired engineer for Tumpane Construction Company, and had served during WWII, the Korean Conflict and the Vietname War. He was a charter member of the NRA and a member of the VFW and Retired Officers Association. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kimberly Cass. He is survived by his wife, Allena Cass; his son Lorne Cass; his daughter, Katherine Watson; grandchildren Ryan Cass, Warren Buck, Reed Rector and Minh Pho; and one great-grandchild. Interment was in Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

Isaias V. Saenz passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2002. He was raised in Pocatello, Idaho, and moved to El Paso in 1935. He worked for Southern Pacific Railroad and later for A&AF&ES at Fort Bliss, from which he retired. He was a WWII veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Antietam CV-36. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margarita Soto Saenz; his parents Pedro and Ramona Saenz; and brothers Efrain V. Saenz and Guadalupe Saenz. He is survived by his son Richard J. Saenz and daughter-in-law Irene V. Saenz; his sister Connie Theal; his brother David V Saenz; his niece Irma C. Rodriguez; and many nieces and nephews. Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors. Helen Louise Sparks passed away Thursday, March 7, 2002. A longtime El Paso resident, she retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. after 36 years of service. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Sparks, and is survived by her sons, James Sparks and Donald Sparks; three grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Bill Appleton, Sr., passed away Friday, March 8, 2002. He retired from both Carter Tobacco Co. and Allied Van Lines. He was preceded in death by his sons, Damon Appleton and Theo Appleton, and is survived by his wife, Mary Alyce Martin Appleton; his son Bill Appleton, Jr., and his wife Ronda Appleton; granddaughters Kimberly Moon and her husband Brett Moon; Elizabeth Appleton and Jenny Appleton; and great-granddaughter Abigail Moon. John J. Anthony passed away Monday, March 11, 2002. He was a S/Sgt. in the United States Air Force during WWII. An El Paso resident since 1959, he retired from the El Paso Independent School District after 38 years where he was a teacher and then a principal. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise Anthony, who was also retired from EPISD after 38 years, and by his sister, Betty Bedner. He is survived by his daughters, Felisa Weber, Oralie Tyson and Rosanne Morin; his grandchildren, Alex, Matt, Tara, Amanda and Alexandra; his brothers, Steve Anthony and Joseph Anthony; and his sisters, Mary Jarusso and Betty Bedner. Interment was in Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors.

June Araiza passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2002. She was a lifelong resident of El Paso, and is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Araiza. She is survived by her son, Richard Edward Araiza, and her daughter, Martha Araiza Ogburn; by her grandchildren, Paul Araiza, David Araiza, Alex Araiza, Matthew Ogburn, James Ogburn; her great granddaughter, Rachel Araiza; and her sisters Mary Love and Jimmie Johnson. Interment was in Restlawn Memorial Park.

Harry D. Beaver, Sr., passed away Saturday, March 9, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Lucy F. Beaver; his sons, David F. Beaver, Harry D. Beaver, Jr., and his daughters, Joyce L. Segapell and Jacqui Hansen. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers Ernest L. Beaver, R.D. Beaver, M.L. Beaver and Robert L. Beaver; and his sister, Dorothy Johnson. Interment was at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

Harriett K. Gerber passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2002. A longtime El Paso resident, she worked for the El Paso Independent School District as a secretary and belonged to Trinity First United Methodist Church for 70 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin V. Gerber, and survived by her sons, Jerry Gerber and his wife Loys Thomason, and James Gerber and his wife Sarah Gerber; by her daughter Jann Dalrymple and her husband Charles Dalrymple; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; her brothers Benjamin Archer and Louis Archer; her sisters Helen Jones and Margery Butler. Interment was at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. Joe Dibrell Heath, M.D., passed away March 4, 2002. He graduated from U.T. Austin in 1942, and received his M.D. degree from Southwestern Medical College in 1945, and received the Distinguished Alumnus award from both schools in 1968. He served his internship in Denver, Colo., and his residency in San Angelo, and was in the U.S. Army from 1943 through 1948. He maintained a solo practice in Kermit, Texas, for 40 years, and was active in the Masonic Lodge, the York Rite and Scottish Rite Masons, the Texas Medical Association and the Reeves, Ward and Winkler County Medical Society. From 1967-1971, he was employed by the State Dept. as a volunteer physician in Vietnam. After his retirement in 1989, he tutored the students of the West Texas Children’s Home in Pyote. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Roberts Heath, and by his sister, Billie Crow. He is survived by his sons, Robert L. Heath and William A. Heath; his grandchildren, Shelly Bagley, Randy Heath, Shaylon Whittington, Dire Naranjo, Quinn Heath and Bob Sutherland; five great grandchildren, two nieces, three nephews and his brother, Jack Heath. Memorial donations may be made to the Scottish Rite Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband Elvin “Johnnie” Johnston, her parents, two sisters and two brothers. Humberto Silex, Sr., passed away Thurssday, March 14, 2002, at the age of 99. He was born in Managua, Nicaragua, and was a veteran of WWI. A labor union leader for the AFL-CIO, he organized industrial, mining and smelting workers locally, nationally and internationally. He was preceded in death by his grandsons, Humberto Silex III and Daniel Silex, and is survived by his wife, Maria de Jesus Silex; his sons, Humberto Silex, Jr., and Hugo Silex, Sr.; his daughters, Lupe Silex Villa, Olga Salazar, Victoria Silex-Martinez, Emma G. Silex and Eleanor Duntley; granddaughters Miriam Barrow, Roslyn Silex, Elizabeth Silex, Kathy Silex, Nora Hayes, Delia Hernandez, Susan Silex, Norma Silex, Martha Silex, Elsa Silex and Stephanie Silex; grandsons Isaac Villa, Fernie Silex III, Jake Salazar, Ricky Duntley, Aaron Duntley, Adam Duntley, Edgar Silex, Armando Silex, Salvador Silex, and Hugo Silex, Jr.; 17 great grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; sisters Guillermina Centeno and Emma Silex.
