John Wright

Highland Village – John Allan Wright, 51, of Highland Village, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 18, 1950, in Lawton, Okla., to Lloyd Eugene and Georgia Mae Wright.

Mr. Wright was a salesman for Moore Supply Company.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, in the chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors in Denton. Rev. John Stout will officiate.

Survivors include his father of Lawton, Okla.; one daughter, Lindsey Jensen of Denton; two sisters, Betty Lemons of Arizona and Pat Hall of Lawton, Okla.; and one grandchild. His mother, and one son, Dustin Allan Wright, are deceased.

Walter Laney Sr.

Walter Laney, our beloved Daddy and Pappaw, went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 16, 2001. He was a lifetime resident of Denton County.

He was born March 30, 1918, to Tom and Hattie (House) Laney. He attended Cooper Creek School where his mother was one of the teachers. He attended and graduated from Denton High School. He was a member of Cooper Creek United Methodist Church.

He married Ollie Fay Meeker on March 11, 1949, at Gainesville, Texas. She preceded him in death on July 14, 2000.

He worked as a farmer. He was employed at Evers Hardware for over 45 years.

Walter is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Walter Jr. and Callie Laney, and granddaughters, Elizabeth and Becky.

He was loved like a brother by his in-laws: Willena Meeker, Virgie Burrows, Marie and Tom Brown, and Floyd and Janice Meeker.

He was uncle to Michael and Amy Meeker, James and David Brown, and great-uncle to Kyle and Katie Meeker.

Services will be at Cooper Creek United Methodist Church on Friday, Oct. 19, at 10:00.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at DeBerry Funeral Directors of Denton.

Donations may be made to Cooper Creek United Methodist Church or Ann’s Haven VNA Hospice.

DeBerry Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.

Herbert Lee Harris

Sanger – Herbert Lee Harris, 73, of Sanger, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at Denton Community Hospital. He was born May 27, 1928, in Pilot Point.

Mr. Harris was a self-employed plumber.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, in the chapel of Coker Funeral Home in Sanger. The Rev. Bob Joyce will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ann’s Haven VNA.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ella Harris of Sanger; one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and James Lindsey; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Cathy Harris of Sanger and Ronald and Paula Harris of Powderly; two brothers, Billy Harris of Texarkana and Leonard Harris of Monroe, La.; one sister, Lillian Kennedy of Baton Rouge, La.; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Margaret Dilworth

Lake Dallas – Margaret Ann Dilworth, 64, of Lake Dallas died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at her home.

She was born March 18, 1937, in Malta, Phillips County, Mont., to Oswell K. and Mary Johnson Owen. She graduated from St. Ignatius High School and continued her education at Montana State College and the University of Idaho. On Aug. 10, 1956, she married Edward Kay Dilworth in Charlo, Mont.

Mrs. Dilworth was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Private family services were held. DeBerry Funeral Directors of Denton was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her husband of Lake Dallas; five daughters, TerryKay Dilworth of Stamford, Conn., LoriAnn Hiller of Sumner, Wash., MaryJo Dilworth Samms of Denver, Colo., Evelyn Nielsen of Denton, and Sarah Dawnette Vansickle of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sons, Edward Owen Dilworth of Statesboro, Ga., and Nathan Owen Dilworth of Merengo, Ill.; two brothers, Kenneth Owen of Puyallup, Wash., and Don Owen of Charlo, Mont.; and eight grandchildren.

Hazel Whitney

Tolar – Hazel Lucille Whitney, 89, of Tolar died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at Granbury Villa Nursing Home, Granbury.

She was born June 21, 1912, in Post Oak. She married the late Charlie A. Coker, who preceded her in death on May 28, 1985. She later married the late Raymond Whitney.

Mrs. Whitney was a homemaker.

She was Baptist.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. today, Friday, Oct. 19, at Paradise Cemetery, Paradise. Joe Motsenbocker will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie, Ricky and Tony Dewayne, Kent and Keith Coker, and Boyce Cotton.

Survivors include her son, Orville Coker of Tolar; her daughter, Charlene Tyson of Overland Park, Kan.; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Winston Wight

Lake Kiowa – Winston W. Wight, 78, of Lake Kiowa died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at Pecan Tree Manor.

He was born Nov. 30, 1922, in Denton to William Lee and Willie Chambers Wight. He attended the University of North Texas.

Mr. Wight was a firefighter at the Denton Fire Department, and was employed at North American Aviation during World War II. After moving to Lake Kiowa, he was active in the Bird and Nature Club and Fishing Club.

He was an elder at the Churchill Way Presbyterian Church in Dallas.

A service will be at 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 21, at Lake Kiowa Lodge, Lake Kiowa. The Rev. Elwood S. Poore, pastor emeritus of First United Methodist Church, will officiate.

Memorials may be made to Lake Kiowa Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, Luz S. Wight of Lake Kiowa; two daughters, Dana Wight of Austin, and Wendy Sparks of Carrollton; one son, Stewart Wight of Denton; one sister, Lanelle Little of Lake Kiowa; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Stark Wight.

Pat Massey

John H. "Pat" Massey, 82, of Denton died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at Denton Regional Medical Center.

He was born July 21, 1919 on the plains of Eastern New Mexico to Ed and Annie (Elder) Massey. He was the youngest of seven children. He married Delva Marie Walls of Blackwell, Texas on Dec. 23, 1937. He was a rancher in New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas before retiring to Aubrey in 1990. He loved working with his cattle and horses and worked side by side with his wife baling and stacking hay, mending fences, and gardening for most of their married life. He lived a rich and full life. He faithfully and lovingly cared for his aging wife the last five years of his life.

He was a member and deacon of New Hope Baptist Church.

Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 19, at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 20, at the New Hope Baptist Church in Cross Roads, with the Rev. Elmer Cummings and the Rev. Bill Cox officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 21, at the Blackwell Cemetery in Blackwell, Texas.

Honorary pallbearers will be the members of his Sunday School Class at the New Hope Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to the National Cancer Society for Lymphoma, Denton Unit, 3301 West Freeway Fort Worth, Texas 76107-5709.

Survivors include his wife, Delva Massey of Denton, Texas; two daughters, Tammy Walker and husband Tommy of Denton, Texas, and JoAnn Stidham and husband Johnny of Oklahoma City, Okla; five grandchildren, Shawn Martin, Bruce Walker, Steve Allen, Gary Allen, and Robin Keegan; 21 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, W.E. "Biggin" Massey and David Massey of Dora, N.M.; one sister Margarette Wilson of Elida, N.M.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Jerry Massey; and three brothers, Ted Massey, Allen Massey, and Emmitt Cade.

Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Sherman

Margaret Turner Vaughn Sherman, 89, of Denton, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at Denton Community Hospital. She was born Oct. 14, 1912, to Charles and Daisy Turner in Coldwater, Kan. She was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics from Kansas State University. On Sept. 1, 1935, she married Francis Arthur Vaughn, U.S.M.C., Ret., in Hartford, Kan. He preceded her in death on April 28, 1980. She married Dr. Robert C. Sherman on May 22, 1983, in Sunnyvale, Texas. She was a cellist in the South Texas Symphony Orchestra. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Denton. Formerly she was a member of the First Methodist Church in San Benito and Weslaco where she was an active member of both choirs.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the First United Methodist Church under the direction of the Rev. Gary Muellar and the Rev. William C. Crouch. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, in the Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, Texas. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Television Ministry or a charity of your choice. No visitation is scheduled. Schmitz-Floyd-Andersen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Robert C. Sherman of Denton; five sons, Charles Turner Vaughn and wife Phyllis of Sherman, Texas; Mark Howard Vaughn and wife Marilyn of Blewberry, England, Francis Andrew Vaughn and wife Judy of Georgetown, Texas, John Christopher Vaughn and wife Caralynn of Denver, Colo., and Elliott Benson Vaughn of Houston, Texas; her step-children, Bob Sherman and wife Bette, Betty Lynn Jordan and husband Ray, and Jud Sherman and wife Pat, all of Denton; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

J.O. Hopkins

Sanger – J.O. Hopkins, 76, of Sanger died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at Denton Community Hospital.

He was born Aug. 11, 1925, in Krum.

Mr. Hopkins served in the Marines in World War II. He was self-employed as a woodworker.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m., Monday, Oct. 22, at Slidell Cemetery, FM 455 West, Sanger. Dr. E.L. McNeal will officiate

Survivors include his daughter, Rajena Gayle Gayford of Iola; his sister, Liela Fay Brewer of Meridian, Miss.; and two grandchildren.

Jewel Mote

Greenwood – Jewel F. Mote, 88, of Greenwood died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, in Decatur.

She was born July 5, 1913, in Chatfield. On Dec. 6, 1931, she married Robert Mote.

Mrs. Mote was a homemaker, and a member of the Home Extension Club for 50 years.

She was a member of the Greenwood Baptist Church.

A service will be at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 21, at Greenwood Baptist Church. Lawrence D. Burks will officiate, assisted by David Ruark. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Neal Fortenberry, Frank Maxwell, Roland Wilson, Gaylen Wilson, Kenny Shaw, Robert Rich, A.C. Griffith and Rex Maxwell.

Visitation will be at 6 p.m. today, Saturday, Oct. 20, at Coker Funeral Home in Decatur.

Survivors include three sons, Robert and Rodney Mote, both of Greenwood, and Felix Mote of Nazareth; one brother, Ray Roberts of Groveton; three sisters, Clois Howard and Bobbie Ashley, both of Greenwood, and Nemmie Garrett of Alvord; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

J.B. Harper

Azle – J.B. Harper, 90, a retired salesman, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001 in Azle.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at White’s Azle Chapel. Burial will be in Moore Memorial Gardens in Arlington.

Memorials may be made to Walnut Creek Baptist Church Building Fund.

J.B. Harper was born in Jack County. He was a member of the Texas Bowling Association Hall of Fame and Walnut Creek Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Oleta Harper; and son, James Allan Harper.

Survivors include his daughter, Marlene Harper of Denton; one stepson, Lewis Rogers of Mineola; his brother, Wayne Harper of Arlington; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and special friend, Frances Riddle.

White’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Burkett

Boyd – Mary Ellen Burkett, 80, of Boyd, died in Decatur, Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001.

She was born April 18, 1921, in Paducah. On Jan. 18, 1952, she married the late Billy Ben Burkett in Roswell, N.M.

Mrs. Burkett was a housewife.

A service will be Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Second Baptist Church in Lamesa. Burial will be in Lamesa Memorial Park. Coker Funeral Home in Decatur is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include three sons, Steve Parker of Abilene, Bob Burkett of Boyd, and Charles Burkett of Brownfield; two daughters, Fran Standefer of Boyd and Jan Burkett of Boyd; one brother Buddy Foster of Lamesa; two sisters, Abena Lee of Lubbock, and Louise Hightower of Midland; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Lanette Newland

Lewisville – Lanette Newland, 53, of Lewisville, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001.

She was born Oct. 10, 1948, in Dallas to Jim and Darlene Angel. On May 27, 1967, she married Billy Jack Newland in Lewisville.

Mrs. Newland was a past president of Denton County Aggie Moms and a past officer of the Federation of Aggie Moms. She was employed by Joe Irick State Farm Insurance for five years.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Lewisville.

A service will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 22, at First Baptist Church in Lewisville. Dr. Stephen G. Hatfield and the Rev. Truett King will officiate. Interment will follow in Old Hall Cemetery in Lewisville.

The family will be at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home in Lewisville from 4:30 to 6 p.m., today, Sunday, Oct.21.

Survivors include her husband of Lewisville; her daughter Dr. Sherrie Newland-Kjar of Austin; her son Everette Newland of Sanger; her mother of Denton; her twin sister Lanita Angel-Morris of Denton; and one grandson. She was preceded in death by her father and her brother Jim Angel.

Memorials may be made to Lewisville First Baptist Church Children’s Ministry or to the Camp Copass Children’s Ministry in Denton.

Lucy Woodard

Ponder – Lucy Brooke Woodard, 19-day-old daughter of Sarah and Dusty Woodard of Ponder, died Saturday Oct. 20, 2001, at Denton Community Hospital. Goen-Hudgens Funeral Home in Denton.
