June 7, 1929 — June 27, 2000

Services for Lois D. DeLeon, 71, of Steep Hollow, Texas, are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Callaway-Jones Chapel in Bryan.

The Rev. Ray Marshall of Reliance Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Steep Hollow Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 8 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. DeLeon died Tuesday at St. Joseph Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Port Arthur, Texas, and moved to Brazos County in 1988. She worked for Safeway Stores and was a gardener for Texas A&M University. She was a member of Reliance Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Ronald Gene and Mary Tadlock of Houston; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Rusty Lewis of Steep Hollow; two brothers, John Allen Simmons of Fresno, Texas, and Bill Simmons of San Antonio; one sister, Darlene Trojan of Columbus, Texas; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Reliance Baptist Church.

Eugene “Peanut” Hairston
April 21, 1935 — June 28, 2000

Services for Eugene “Peanut” Hairston, 65, of Rockdale are set for 10 a.m. Friday at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

The Rev. Doug Springer will officiate. Burial will be in Keen Cemetery near Rockdale.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Hairston died Wednesday at Richards Memorial Hospital in Rockdale.

He was born in Milam County, Texas. He attended Milano High School. He was an I-Car certified technician and owned Hairston Body Shop and Wrecker Service in Rockdale for 36 years.

Survivors include his wife, Lee Ida Hairston of Rockdale; one son, Bill Hairston of Rockdale; one brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Helen Hairston of Bay City, Texas; one sister, Juanita Clifford Noack of Houston; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Clyde and Alice Holliman of Rockdale; one brother-in-law and his wife, Wayne and Cathie Holliman of Austin; and two nieces.

W.A. ‘Tucker’ Beene
Jan. 15, 1910 — June 28, 2000

MADISONVILLE — Services for W.A. “Tucker” Beene, 90, of Oakhurst, Texas, are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Martin’s Prairie Baptist Church near the Keith community.

Bro. Mitchell Beene will officiate. Burial will be in Martin’s Prairie Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m., at J.M. Day Funeral Home in Madisonville.

Mr. Beene died Wednesday in Huntsville Memorial Hospital.

He was born in the Peach Creek community of Brazos County. He was a member of the Centerhill Baptist Church in Oakhurst and was retired as an operating engineer at Dow Chemical.

Survivors include his wife, Inice Faye Beene of Oakhurst; three sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Ramona Beene of Dallas, Gary and Dottie Beene and Fred and Carolyn Beene, all of Oakhurst; a daughter and son-in-law, Lena and David Montgomery of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Verde Maye and Luke Moughan of Austin, Bessie Lee Broadus of Brookshire, Texas, and Lois and Wally Stevens of Detroit, Mich.; 13 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Yolonda Nicole Blake
Dec. 29, 1972 — June 21, 2000

HOUSTON — Services for Yolonda Nicole Blake, 27, of Houston are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Southwest Community Baptist Church in Houston.

The Rev. Greg Patrick will officiate. Burial will be in Clay Cemetery in Clay, Texas.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Serenity Mortuary in Houston and from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Home Baptist Church in Clay.

Ms. Blake died last Wednesday in Houston.

She was born in Brenham. She attended Snook High School, Hasting High School in Houston and Sebring Career School. She was a nail technician. She was a member of Southwest Community Baptist Church.

Survivors include her mother, Ella Sanders of Houston; her stepfather, Michael Sanders of Houston; her father, Eddie Blake Sr. of Austin; her stepmother, Mary Blake of Austin; grandparents, Hezekiah and Barbara Carter of Clay and R.L. Blake of Tunis, Texas; one sister, Tanisha Neal of Houston; one stepsister, Mikhail Sanders of Indianapolis, Ind.; five brothers, Warren Williams of Houston, Eddie Blake Jr. of Houston, Patrick Blake of Houston, Christopher Neal of Houston and Edric Joel Tate of Houston; one great-grandfather, Surry Pool of Clay; one great-aunt, Estella Daniels; and other aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Arrangements are under the direction of Serenity Mortuary in Houston.

Jeffery Lee Francis Sr.
Oct. 19, 1940 — June 27, 2000

COLDSPRING, Texas — Graveside services for Jeffery Lee Francis Sr., 59, of Iola were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Pace-Stancil Memorial Rest Gardens in Coldspring.

Arrangements were under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Coldspring.

Mr. Francis died Tuesday.

He was born in Houston and was retired after 20 years service with the Houston Fire Department. He was also a volunteer fireman with the Iola Fire Department.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Judith Francis.

Survivors include his wife, Connie Francis of Iola; a daughter and son-in-law, Leighana and Richard Dixon; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffery Jr. and Stephanie Francis; a step-daughter, Wendy Brown; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Dolores and James Pruitt and Laura Griffitts; a brother, Edward Louis Francis; eight grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Vera Gasper
Dec. 30, 1920 — June 28, 2000

ROCKDALE — Services for Vera Gasper, 79, of Milano are set for 3 p.m. Saturday at the Friendship Baptist Church near Milano.

The Rev. Reggie Nelson of Friendship Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Milano Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

Mrs. Gasper died Wednesday in Heartland Health Care Nursing Home in Temple, Texas.

She was born in Gause and had lived in Milano since 1946. She was a beautician and owned Vera’s Beauty Shop in Milano for 35 years. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and was also a seamstress.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Cecil Pratt and Johnnie Gasper.

Survivors include a son, Douglas Pratt of Temple; two daughters, Peggy Pratt of Milano and Sandra Hamilton of Topeka, Kan.; three sisters, Inez Rinehart of Hermligh, Texas, Clara Buffington of Snider, Texas, and Merle Dittrich of Amarillo, Texas; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Sallie Roberson
Sept. 5, 1923 — June 23, 2000

MADISONVILLE — Services for Sallie Roberson, 76, of Leona are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Two Mile Methodist Church near Leona.

The Rev. Carey Cauley will officiate. Burial will be in Two Mile Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Madisonville Funeral Home in Madisonville.

Mrs. Roberson died Friday at her home.

She was born in Leona and had lived in Leona for 50 years. She was a member of Grace Chapel Methodist Church and was a school teacher.

Survivors include a brother, Issac Simpson of Madisonville.

Winston A. Sanders Sr.
Sept. 17, 1917 — June 28, 2000

HEARNE — Services for Winston A. Sanders Sr., 82, of Hearne are set for 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Hearne.

The Rev. Larry Blackmon of the First Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Norwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Heartfield Funeral Home in Hearne.

Mr. Sanders died Wednesday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.

He was born in Franklin and was a longtime resident of Hearne. He was retired from the Southern Pacific Railroad and was a member and past master of the Golden Rule Lodge No. 361 in Hearne. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Hearne, where he was a deacon.

Survivors include his wife, Dorris Sanders of Hearne; a son and daughter-in-law, Winston A. Jr. and Betty Sanders of Bryan; a sister, Louyse Bussell of Temple, Texas; and two grandchildren.

Ora Lee Weyand Schlabach
Dec. 22, 1919 — June 28, 2000

BRENHAM — Services for Ora Lee Weyand Schlabach, 80, of Fayetteville, Texas, are set for 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Shelby, Texas.

The Rev. Don Cole will officiate. Burial will be in Shelby Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham.

Mrs. Schlabach died Wednesday in the Brenham Rest Home.

She was born in Nassau, Texas, and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Sons of Hermann Lodge No. 28, the Shelby Fire Department and Harmonie Hall of Shelby. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her husband, Coivin H. Schlabach of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Alfred Kelm of Burton; a brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law, Roy E. and Verline Schlabach and Pearl Aschenbeck, all of Shelby; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Shelby Memorial Fund.

Hanna Purdy Timmons
Feb. 16, 1908 — June 28, 2000

WEBSTER, Texas — Services for Hanna Purdy Timmons, 92, of Houston are set for 3 p.m. Saturday at Forest Park East Funeral Home Chapel in Webster.

The Rev. Ron Lyles will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Park East Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Timmons died Wednesday.

She was born in Gorman, Texas, and was a retired teacher. She taught for many years at South Houston High School and was a member of the Beta Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, was past president and parliamentarian of Pasadena Area Retired Teachers Association and was a member of the National Forensic League and the Texas Forensic Association. She was also a longtime member of South Main Baptist Church of Pasadena, where she taught Sunday school.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Horton Timmons.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth David and Marlene Timmons of Bryan; a daughter-in-law, Wanda Timmons; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Georgia Bell Bond Burkhalter
May 10, 1921 — July 1, 2000

Services for Georgia Bell Bond Burkhalter, 79, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Monday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

The Rev. Bob Wolfert will officiate. Burial will be in Bryan City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday and from 8 a.m. to the time of the services Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Burkhalter died Saturday at her home.

She was a member of the Central Church of Christ and had lived in Bryan since 1939. She was retired from Texas A&M University after 20 years of service and she later worked for Hancock Clothing in College Station.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Monroe Bond and Louis Burkhalter.
Survivors include three sons and a daughter-in-law, Tom Bond, Searcy Bond and Steven and Mary Beth Burkhalter, all of Bryan; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Ann and Charles Nichols of Bryan, Deedie and Bobby Slaydon of Deridder, La., and Carolyn Burkhalter of Dallas; three daughters-in-law, Marianna Bond and Paula Burkhalter, both of Bryan, and Collins Moore of Lancaster, Texas; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley or the Bryan Public Library.
