George Hughes

Funeral services for Rev. George W. Hughes, 90, of Houston, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. James Baptist Church with Rev. J.D. Parks officiating. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Rev. Hughes died April 13, 2007, at LBJ Hospital in Houston. He was born in Wharton on March 32, 1917, to Albert Covington and Adaline Mims Hughes.
Survivors include sons, Sam Hughes, Wayne Hughes and Terry Hughes, all of Houston; daughter, Gloria Ferguson of Houston; sister, Lizzie Godsey of Wharton.

Ernon Ingram

Funeral services for Ernon Esmore Ingram Jr., 54, of Wharton, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Mount Scilla Baptist Church with Rev. C. Spradley officiating. Burial will follow in Roberts Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Thursday.

Mr. Ingram died April 14, 2007, at his residence. He was born March 31, 1953, in Ganado to Ernon Esmore and Sadie Franklin Ingram Sr.

Survivors are wife, Linda Marie Ingram of Wharton; daughters, Martha Terrell of El Campo, Lashay Baylor of Garland and Cynthia Bailer of Metro Atlanta, Ga.; brother, I.V. Ingram of Edna; and eight grandchildren.

Stanley Melnar

Stanley Melnar was born in Wallis and his parents were Rosie and Louis Melnar, and he was one of five children, three sons and two daughters. He grew up in the farm communities of Rosenberg and East Bernard where he also attended schools and churches in those areas.
In his early years, he worked on the farm with his parents and was also employed by the rice farm business owned by the family of Fred Fojtik Sr.

Mr. Melnar enlisted in the U.S. Navy at an early age and served aboard the U.S.S. Yancey and participated in the battles of Okinawa and Iwo Jima. His home port in the Navy was San Diego, Calif. In Memories of an Unconditional Surrender, an article by Fred Chambers in a Wednesday, Aug. 30, 1995, issue of the East Bernard Tribune, he related some of his personal experiences under enemy fire while unloading cargo and taking back wounded Marines.

After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy, he was employed by Brown and Root on the pipeline and also by Duval Sulphur Company in Orchard. Later in his life he also worked for two different manufacturers of institutional furniture and cabinets in East Bernard.
He enjoyed his retirement years in East Bernard where he did some fishing in Matagorda Bay. Mr. Melnar liked and enjoyed the small town surroundings and knew almost everyone. He liked to associate with the many friends he made over the years of living in the same community.

Mr. Melnar was active in attending Holy Cross Catholic Church where he also was a third degree honorary member of Council No. 2500 of the Knights of Columbus.

As a veteran, he belonged to VFW Post No. 3903 in Rosenberg and for 29 years was a member of the American Legion Post No. 226 in East Bernard.

Stanley Melnar passed away peacefully at Triumph Hospital from complications of heart bypass surgery in Sugar Land.
Services were held at the Chapel of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg with the Wake on Tuesday April 10, 2007, and interment at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Veteran’s Section, on Wednesday, April 11, 2007.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Rosie Melnar; a brother Victor W. Melnar; and sister-in-law, Margarette Melnar.

Mr. Melnar is survived by his brother, Bennie J. Melnar and wife, Ann, of Ontario, Calif.; sisters, Leona C. Carlson and husband Dr. Rodger Carlson of Battlement Mesa, Colo., Betty J. Marek and husband Johnnie of Stafford; nieces and nephews, Ronald C. Melnar and family of Las Vegas, Nev., Randall K. Melnar and family, of Hollywood, Fla., Lou Ann Marek Mowka and husband Steve of Richmond; Carol B. Marek Prokop and family of Shanghai, P.R. of China, Judy T. Marek Dunmire and husband David of Davis, Calif., and Kay M. Marek Munguia and family of Rosenberg. He is also survived by other relatives and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mr. Melnar’s name to Holy Cross Catholic Church, 839 Church St., East Bernard, TX 77435.

Honorary pallbearers were Ronald Melnar, Randall Melnar, Steve Mowka, Patrick Prokop, David Dunmire and Alex Munguia.

Jo Ann Michalec

Funeral services for Jo Ann “Lala” Cook Michalec, 77, of Bay City, will be held 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Wharton City Cemetery.

Mrs. Michalec died April 14, 2007, in a Bay City hospital following a sudden illness. She was born on Jan. 1, 1930, in Wharton, the daughter of the late Gordon R. Cook and Aline Housworth Cook.
She had been a resident of Bay City since 1952 and was Christian by faith. Mrs. Michalec married Eugene George “Gene” Michalec Sr. on March 30, 1948, in Wharton. She was a homemaker all of her life and enjoyed playing poker and hunting.

Survivors include her husband, Gene Michalec Sr. of Bay City; daughters and son-in-law, Marsha Lynn Michalec of Bay City and Kim and Richard Evens of Blessing; son and daughter-in-law, George and Marla Michalec Jr. of West Columbia; sister, Betty Bergstrom of Wharton; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services are under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Ronnie Schubert

Ronnie W. Schubert, 43, of Fedor, was called to his final resting place by out Heavenly Father on Thursday, April 12, 2007, in La Grange.

Mr. Schubert was born on Nov. 7, 1963, to Herbert and Alda Bess Kaiser Schubert in Austin.

He married Mary Ann Ziegenhals on Oct. 1, 1988, in Lexington. Mr. Schubert was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Fedor. He farmed and ranched near Fedor on the land where he and his wife made their home and had a long career as foreman for Lee County, Precinct 3.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Schubert of Fedor; mother, Alda Bess Schubert of Austin; brother, Leslie Schubert and wife Debbie of McDade; grandparents, Walter and Selma Kaiser of Fedor; brothers-in-law, Bob and wife Frances Ziegenhals of Wharton, Bill and wife Cindy Ziegenhals of El Campo, Allen and wife Lee Ziegenhals ad wife Anita Moss of Boerne. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, Andrew Schubert, Kristen Schubert, Courtney and David Sanderson, Karl Ziegenhals, Adam Ziegenhals, Liesl Ziegenhals, Sean Foster, Dustin Foster and Robert Alford.

Mr. Schubert is preceded in death by his father, Herbert Schubert; his grandparents, Otto and Alma Schubert; his mother and father-in-law, Oscar and Mary Beth Ziegenhals; and a brother-in-law, Fred Ziegenhals.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 16, 2007, at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fedor with burial following in Trinity Lutheran Cemetary. Visitation began Sunday at 5 p.m. at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings.

Memorials have been requested to Trinity Lutheran Church Building Fund, The Lutheran Heritage Foundation and the Fedor Volunteer Fire Department.

Arrangements entrusted to Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home, 588 N. Main, Giddings, TX 78942.

Barbara Cooper
Funeral services for Barbara “Big B” Cooper, 43, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Faith Baptist Church with Rev. M.E. Matthews officiating. Burial will follow in Jawbone Cemetery in Burr. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Matthews Funeral Home.
Ms. Cooper died May 20, 2002, at Gulf Coast Medical Center after a sudden illness. She was born April 2, 1959, in Wharton to Joan Hayes Colton and the late Keria Hayes.
She was a lifelong resident of Wharton and was a homemaker. Ms. Cooper was Baptist by faith.
Survivors include sons, Tarvis Hayes, Lloyd Grissom and Barteé Grissom; sisters and brother-in-law, Karen Taylor and Jeanetta and John Marbles; brothers and sister-in-law, Leonard and Mary Hayes, Kerie Hayes, Curtis Temple and Brian Petitt.

Eunice Cooper

Following cremation, memorial services for Eunice Ella Cooper, 85, of Wharton, are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Cooper died Nov. 12, 2002, in Wharton following an extended illness. She was born on Sept. 27, 1917, in Gonzales, the daughter of the late Alexander Chester Hill and Pauline Zittelmann Hill.

She was a 14-year resident of Wharton and was a former resident of Flatonia from 1937 until 1977.

While living in Flatonia she worked as a clerk for Freytag Drug Store for many years. She married Robert Gelhorn Cooper on July 31, 1937, in Gonzales and he preceded her in death on March 16, 1972. Mrs. Cooper was Methodist by faith.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Robert K. and Marie Cooper of Wharton; sisters, Dora Bernstein of Wharton, Margie Hedrick of Goliad; brothers, Boots Hill of Wharton and Jack Hill of Watonga, Okla., and Holmes Hill of Victoria; two grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by sisters, Beatrice Hill Finch, Annabell Hill Whiddon and by brothers, Herman Hill and A.C. Hill Jr.

Virginia Lowe

Funeral services for Virginia Lowe, 94, of Wharton, are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lowe died Nov. 13, 2002, in Gulf Coast Medical Center after an extended illness.

Beatrice Pina

Beatrice Bermudes Pina, age 36, of Wharton passed away Saturday, Nov. 9, in a Houston hospital. She was born June 20, 1966, in Newgulf, the daughter of the late Benito G. Bermudes and Antonia Horta. She graduated from Boling High School in 1986. She married Edgar Pina on March 3, 2001, in Boling. She was a former child care provider with the Christ Is Life Church. She was a resident of Boling until 1997 when she moved to Wharton. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Mrs. Pina loved to write poetry and sing.

A rosary service was recited Monday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral mass was held on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Joe Vrana officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Edgar Pina of Wharton; mother, Antonia Horta of Wharton; sisters, Berta Bermudes of Wharton and Belle Hernandez and husband, Francisco, of Boling; brother, Benito Bermudes Jr. and wife, Cynthia, of Wharton; father-in-law andmother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ruben Pina of Port Lavaca; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ceasar and Alicia Pina of Port Lavaca; nieces and nephews, Jose Alvino Hernandez, Juan Benito Hernandez, Jerome Anthony Garcia, Victoria Nicole Bermudes, Brittany Renee Garcia, Brianna Elaine Garcia, Mia Faith Hernandez, Maya Hope Hernandez and Ceasar Allen Pina. She was preceded in death by her father, Benito G. Bermudes; sister, Elida Bermudes, and nephew, Adam Bermudes.

Pallbearers were Ralph Castro, Bryan Powell, James Mark Raymond Sr., Andy Reyes Jr., Ceasar Pina and Francisco Hernandez.

Honorary pallbearers were Darrell Hodges, Juan Benito Hernandez, Ignacio Bermudes, Jerome Anthony Garcia and Jose Alvino Hernandez.

If desiring, memorials may be sent to American Association of Kidney Patients, 100 South Ashley Drive, Suite 280, Tampa, Fla. 33602.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Lottie Harlan

Funeral services for Lottie Belle Mayo Harlan, 95, of Bishop, were held Thursday at First Baptist Church in Bishop. Burial followed in Restland Cemetery.

Mrs. Harlan died Jan. 13, 2003.

She was the first woman to be selected for a Nueces County grand jury. When she was selected in 1959, she said she did not believe being a woman had slowed down the wheels of progress. Mrs. Harlan was chosen along with 11 men from a 16-member panel, which included another woman, who was not chosen. Harlan called the experience “quite different” from anything she had ever done. Along with her husband, the late J. Sankie Harlan, she helped to establish Harlan Farms Inc. of Bishop and Driscoll. She helped him by taking care of all the everyday things that go into having a family. Mrs. Harlan helped sponsor the Bishop Youth Center in 1950 and in 1993 was honored with the Lifetime Service Award by the Bishop Chamber of Commerce. She enjoyed doing for the community.

Other survivors include sons, Jack Harlan and Kenneth Harlan, both of Bishop; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Buck Boettcher of East Bernard; sister, Roberta Mayo Stephen of Houston; 13 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Restland Cemetery Association, the First Baptist Church or the Texas Federation of South Texas, District Scholarship Fund, 431 University Drive, Corpus Christi, Texas 78412.

Willie Hill

Funeral services for Willie George Hill, 68, of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at Little Concord Baptist Church with Rev. T.J. Cunningham officiating. Burial will follow in Jaw Bone Cemetery.

Mr. Hill died Jan. 13, 2003. He was born Feb. 6, 1934, in Wharton to Jim and Hattie Ashton Hill.
Survivors include sons, Darnell Hill of San Antonio, Donald Lee Hill of Reno, Nev., and James Hill of Colusa, Calif.; daughters, Wilma Gill of Reno, Nev., and Marie Hill of Colusa, Calif.; sisters, Erma Williams of Corpus Christi and Geneva Webb of Wharton; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Rev. John Mack

Funeral Services for Rev. John Reedy Mack Sr., 65, of Brazoria will be at noon Sunday at St. Stephen’s Missionary Baptist Church in Wharton with Rev. B.B. Willis officiating. Burial will be in Jerusalem Cemetery in Brazoria.

Rev. Mack died Jan. 12, 2003, at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston.

He attended George Washington Carver High School in Sweeny and received his bachelor of arts degree in 1984, bachelor of theology degree in 1985, bachelor of divinity in 1986 and doctorate of divinity in 1987 from Conroe College of Religious Education. He also received his certificate from Lacy Kirk Williams Ministers Institute Bishop College in 1989 and Prairie View A&M University in 1998. In August of 1987, Rev. Mack was called to pastor. Under his leadership following God, St. Stephen’s built a new fellowship hall and paid off its note in 1999. In the year 2000, Rev. Mack led St. Stephen’s families, under the guidance of God, as they reconstructed the entire sanctuary from the inside to the outside. Rev. Mack was “God’s Man With A Vision.” He was a member of the NAACP, a covenant partner of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship, The Word of Faith Ministries with Kenneth Hagin, Morris Cerullo World Evangelism, World Deliverance Ministries for the World with Bishop Bobby Hilton, and The Family Life Church. He was a very caring, friendly, loving, and compassionate person, he touched many lives.

He is survived by his wife, Sofornia Mack of Brazoria; sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce Gordon and Lupe Thompson, John Reedy and Stephanie Mack Jr., Eric Matthew and Erica Mack, all of Brazoria; daughters, Antoinette LeAndrea Mack and Della LeVonia Mack, both of Brazoria; brothers and sisters-in-law, Rev. Robert and Michelle Mack of Vacaville, Calif., and Rev. Abe and Thelma Mack of Cedar Lake; sisters and brother-in-law, Aretha and Rufus Bell of Brazoria and Dewilda Mack of Freeport; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers are Eddie Jackson, Harvey Jackson, Henry Price, Curtis Evans, Jeffery Hayes, Freddie Southall, Rickey Norris and Robert Bledsoe.

Honorary pallbearers are Bruce Gordon Thompson, John Reedy Mack Jr., Eric Matthew Mack, George Duncan, Don Bryant. K.C. Curtis, Robert Wilkes, Jessie Malone, Johnny Robinson and Don Rogers.

Visitation will be today, Saturday, from 2-3 p.m. at Dixon Funeral Home Chapel and a wake will be held today from 6-8 p.m. at the chapel.

Arrangements are by Dixon Funeral Home of Brazoria.
