James Mica

James Lloyd Mica, age 65, of East Bernard, died Friday morning, May 21, 2004, in a Houston hospital following an extended illness. He was born in Flatonia on Nov. 21, 1938, the son of George Mica and Gertrude Steinhauser Mica.

Mr. Mica had been a resident of East Bernard since 1971 and was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard. He married Helen Elizabeth Svatek on June 22, 1958, in Flatonia. Mr. Mica was a former resident of Flatonia and Houston and was a member of the Knights of Columbus in East Bernard. He worked at Hudson Products for 40 years, serving as plant superintendent for several years, until his retirement. He was a loving husband and a devoted and supportive father who enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed gardening and going to his grandchildren’s various activities.

He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Joe F. Svatek and a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Mica.
A rosary was recited Saturday evening, May 22, 2004, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard and a funeral mass was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 23, 2004, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard with Rev. Don Ruppert and Rev. Gerry Cernoch officiating. Burial followed in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in East Bernard.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Mica of East Bernard; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Stephen Gertson of East Bernard; sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Kelly Mica of Coppell, Brian and Michelle Mica, Gerald and Natalie Mica and Dennis Mica, all of East Bernard; parents, George and Gertrude Mica of Flatonia; brothers and sister-in-law, Donnie Mica and Douglas and Sandra Mica, all of Flatonia; mother-in-law, Frances Svatek of Flatonia; and grandchildren, Holt, Brighton, Lindsey, Ashley, Brent, Cassidy, Hallye, Corrinne, Camille, Nicholas, Joshua, Amber, Kristen and Kara; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

Pallbearers were his nephews, Chris Mica, Todd Mica, Tim Mica, Ronald Sedlmeyer, Gregory Sedlmeyer, Keith Svatek, Jason Svatek, Kevin Svatek and Michael Svatek.

Honorary pallbearers were Chris and Chuck Bucek, all of his fellow co-workers at Hudson Products and his many friends.
In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to Holy Cross Catholic Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 280, East Bernard, TX 77435.
Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

H.R. Bass

Memorial services for H. R. Bass, 57, of Wharton, were held Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church of Wharton with Rev. Debbie Cenko officiating. Graveside services and interment were Thursday at Resthaven Cemetery in Shawnee, Okla., with Rev. J. Clifton Briscoe officiating.
Mr. Bass died Oct. 16, 2004, in a Houston hospital after an extended illness. He was born on Sept. 17, 1947, in Shawnee, Okla., the son of Harvey Murl Bass and Delores Bryce Bass.

He was reared in Oklahoma and following graduation from high school he received his bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma Baptist University and later his MBA from Oklahoma University. Mr. Bass served in the U.S. Army as a payroll officer in Fort Dix, N.J., until his honorable discharge. He was a former Oklahoma State Bank Examiner, restaurant owner and radio station manager in Oklahoma City, Galveston, Wharton, Palestine and Bay City.
Most recently Mr. Bass was the owner of his advertising agency, Texas Media and Production Company. He was in the process of making his first movie, “No Place But Texas,” with Chalk Peak Productions, as a partner of the company and producer and director of the movie.
Mr. Bass married Regena Louise Ham on July 4, 1992, in New Orleans, La. He was a 20-year resident of Wharton and a former resident of Oklahoma and Galveston. Mr. Bass was an elder and member of First Presbyterian Church of Wharton.
Survivors include wife, Regena Bass of Wharton; daughters, Lacy Squires of Wharton and Shellie McClary of Oklahoma City, Okla.; parents, Harvey and Delores Bass of Shawnee, Okla.; and three grandchildren.

Ruth K. Smith

The funeral service for Ruth K. Smith of Victoria, Texas, age 87, will be held at 3 p.m on Sunday, October 24, 2004 at the Rhodes Funeral Chapel, 115 South Esplanade, Karnes City, Texas. Rev. William Menn will preside over the service with burial to follow at Karnes City Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith died Thursday, October 21, 2004 in Yorktown, Texas. She was the mother of Helen S. Kerlich of Wharton.

Adela Korenek

Funeral services for Adela Korenek, 87, of Garwood, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Monday, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nada with Rev. Joseph Koebel officiating. Burial follows in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Mrs. Korenek died Oct. 22, 2004. She was born Feb. 14, 1917, in Altair to the late Henry and Sophie Zapalac Pavlu.

She was a homemaker and member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Christian Mothers and KJZT Society.

Survivors include daughters, Dorothy Merta of Louise, Helen Hubenak of Friendswood, Dolores Stavena of Wharton, Beatrice Rachunek of Wharton and Janice Kight of El Campo; sons, John Korenek of Garwood, Richard J. Korenek Jr. of Nada, Dennis Korenek of Nada, James Korenek of El Campo, Lawrence Korenek of Garwood and Wayne Korenek of El Campo; brother, Ben Pavlu of Garwood; 29 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard John Korenek; sister, Evelyn Drlik; grandson, Ronald Stavena Jr.; and great-grandson, Austin Galloway.

If desiring, memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nada.

Susie LeFort

Susie LeFort, age 100, of Wharton, died late Friday night, Oct. 22, 2004, in a Wharton hospital following a brief illness. She was born on Sept. 28, 1904, in Wharton the daughter of the late John Norris and Susan Damon Norris.

Mrs. LeFort was married to Arthur Joseph “Frenchy” LeFort and he preceded her in death in 1955. She was also preceded in death by two sisters. Mrs. LeFort worked as a secretary to the superintendent with Wharton Independent School District and also worked at Western Union and Ingram Abstract Company. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wharton and was an avid bridge player.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 25, 2004, at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Debbie Cenko officiating. Burial follows in the Wharton City Cemetery.

Survivors include three nieces, Elizabeth Brown, Mary Matula and Jane Pendray, all of Wharton. Numerous great nieces and great-nephews also survive.

Pallbearers were Gary Winkenwerder, Johnny Stavinoha, Anthony Tyrone, Willie Bram, Clyde Grier and Andy Kirkland.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to First Presbyterian Church, 1602 John Knox, Wharton, TX 77488.

Ruth Smith

Ruth Klingeman Smith, 87, passed away Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, in Cuero. She was born to the late David Otto Klingeman and the late Stella Clark Klingeman on Oct. 10, 1917, in San Antonio.
Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Southwest Texas State University where she earned her master’s degree in English, journalism and counseling. She was a Gallardian in 1933 at the university. Mrs. Smith married the late Herbert O. Smith on Nov. 8, 1936, in Round Rock. She was a teacher at Karnes City Independent School District for 27 years and Runge Independent School District for four years, retiring in 1979. Mrs. Smith was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Karnes City. She served as a church elder and was member of the Women’s Circle. Mrs. Smith was a lifetime volunteer for M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Helena Chapter, and a past Worthy Matron. In addition to working as a teacher and being very involved in her church and community, she was a loving wife and devoted mother of one son and two daughters.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Helen Sue and Irby Kerlick of Wharton; grandsons, Shannon James Kerlick, I. Ray Kerlick Jr., Christopher Salge and Darrin Salge; granddaughters, Rhonda Workman, Jennifer Smith and Aimee Smith; daughter-in-law, Diane Smith of Victoria; son-in-law, Sherian A. Salge of Yorktown; brother-in-law, Judge Pete Hartman of Karnes City; and sister-in-law, Zulema Klingeman of San Antonio. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband, Herbert; son, James D. Smith; daughter, Sherry Salge; two brothers, Honorable Fred. V. Klingeman and Jack Klingeman; and sister, Helen Hartman.
She resided in Yorktown for the past six months, moving there from Victoria, where she lived for 11 years.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 24, at Rhodes Funeral Home Chapel in Karnes City with Rev. William P. Menn officiating. Burial followed in Karnes City Cemetery.

Memorials in honor of Mrs. Smith may be made to: The Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders, c/o Dr. Joe Jankovic, M.D., Baylor College of Medicine, 6550 Fannin Street, Suite No. 1801, Houston, TX 77030.

Services were under the direction of Rhodes Funeral Home in Karnes City.

Eugene Beyer
Eugene Daniel Beyer, 75, passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2006 in East Bernard. Burial services were held on Monday, June 19, 2006, with Rev. Michael Holcomb officiating. Burial was at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park in New Braunfels.

Mr. Beyer was born on Feb. 18, 1931, in Fentress. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in East Bernard.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores “Dee”; five children and their spouses: Gary and Caroline Beyer of Austin; Randy and Trisha Beyer of Dripping Springs; Debbie and David Yeager of Brenham; Dale and Cathy Pitts of San Antonio; Scott and Mary Pitts of East Bernard. Grandchildren are: Nathan Beyer, Ben Beyer, Alex Beyer, Mason Beyer, Jenna Beyer, David Yeager, Amanda Yeager, Bethany Yeager, Erik Yeager, Aaren Pitts, Patrick Pitts, Tricia Maynard and James Maynard. Also surviving are two brothers and their spouses: Pete and Margie Beyer of Prairie Lea and Roy and Sallie Beyer of Victoria. There are three surviving sisters-in-law: Vera Beyer, Maxine Beyer and Elfrieda Beyer; and many surviving nieces and nephews.
Mr. Beyer was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth Beyer and Adolph Beyer; and brothers, Edgar Beyer, Helmuth “Moody” Beyer, Sidney Beyer, Harry Beyer, Adolph Beyer and John Beyer; and one sister, Irma Bielke.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 25, 2006 at First United Methodist Church in East Bernard at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice A-Med Healthcare Group, 3535 Briarpark Drive Suite 220, Houston, TX 77042; or ALS Association, 27001 Agoura Road, Suit 150, Calabasas, Ca 91301-9801.

James Wright

James “Snooks” Wright Jr., age 88, of East Bernard, passed away Thursday, June 15, 2006, at his home in East Bernard. He was born on July 11, 1917, in Harrisburg, now Houston, the son of James Sr. and Emma Josephine Martin Wright.

He graduated from East Bernard High School in 1935 and began working as an automobile mechanic at Union Motor Company. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in November of 1941 and served in all three theaters of battle until honorably discharged in January of 1946. On Jan. 24, 1946, he married Ella Mae Grantham in Luling.

He was the loving father of Jo Ann Wright Shaver Vasina and grandfather of Donna Shaver and Daniel and Elizabeth Shaver, and great-grandfather of Micheal Thomas Shaver.

Mr. Wright worked as an automobile mechanic at Union Motor Company, now Ellison Chevrolet, in East Bernard for more than 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife; father and mother; brothers, Martin and Calvin Wright; sisters, Delphia King, Dicey and Jessie Wright; and son-in-law, Michael J. Shaver.

He loved watching any kind of sport and building or fixing anything mechanical.
Services were held at First United Methodist Church in East Bernard. Burial was in First United Methodist Church Cemetery in East Bernard.

Memorials May be given to First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 421 Pietzsch St., East Bernard, TX 77435
Services were under the direction of Eagle Lake Funeral Home.

Illie Boultinghouse

Graveside services for Illie Dean Boultinghouse, 79, of Wharton, were held Monday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton with Rev. Don Hurley officiating.

Mrs. Boultinghouse died Aug. 18, 2006, in a Wharton hospital following a brief illness. She was born on Oct. 23, 1926, in Ganado, Texas, the daughter of the late Alvie Lytle and Odie Collins Lytle.

She had been a resident of Wharton since 1974 and was Baptist by faith. Mrs. Boultinghouse was a former resident of Bay City. She married Ralph Boultinghouse on Oct. 24, 1947, in Bay City. Mrs. Boultinghouse was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Buck Lytle; and two sisters, Katherine Hale and Bertha Green.

Survivors include her husband, Ralph Boultinghouse of Wharton; a daughter, Sammie Louise Neve of San Diego, Calif.; two sisters, Gladys Meador of Houston and Odell Grady of Alice; and two grandchildren.

If desiring, memorials are requested to the American Cancer Society, 204 Second St., Wharton, TX 77488.

Jack Johnson

Funeral services for Jack Johnson, 77, of Wharton, are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mr. Johnson died Aug. 22, 2006.

Ricardo Gusman

Funeral services for Ricardo Guzman, 65, of Wharton, will be held 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Carlos Lynch officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Rosary services were held Tuesday.

Mr. Guzman died Oct. 7, 2006, in Wharton following an extended illness. He was born on Dec. 6, 1940, in Wharton, son of the late Alfredo Gusman and Bernarda Alcorta Gusman.

He was a lifelong resident of Wharton and a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Mr. Guzman was employed as a construction worker for Brown and Root and later with the Zachery Co.

Survivors include his daughter, Linda Jewell of Mesa, Ariz.; sons, Ricky Guzman of Wharton, Joe Guzman of Sugar Land, Martin Guzman, Alfred Guzman and Christopher Guzman, all of Wharton; sisters, Lucinda Belasquez of Wharton, Connie Correa of Colona, Ill., and Theresa Ramirez of Wharton; and eight grandchildren.

If desiring, memorials may be made to the Wharton Volunteer Fire Dept., 319 N. Fulton, Wharton, TX 77488.

Jim Watson

Funeral services for Jim Ed Waston Jr., 61, of Needville will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater New Prospect Baptist Church in Needville. Burial will be in Route Pointe Cemetery in Needville.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m.

Friday at Gooden Funeral Home in Rosenberg.

Mr. Watson died Oct. 9.
