James Carter
Following cremation, memorial services for James Howard Carter, 78, of Wharton, were held at 1 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Wharton with Rev. Mack Mathis officiating.
Mr. Carter died Oct. 8, 2004, in a local hospital after an extended illness. He was born Sept. 15, 1926, in Groesbeck, the son of Obid John and Velma Brown Carter.
He married Susie Lucille Petty on Nov. 30, 1946, in Yuma, Ariz. She preceded him in death on Jan. 9, 2004. He worked for the Civil Service for 30 years supervising the repair of aircraft for the U.S. Navy, and served two tours of duty in Viet Nam before retiring in 1980. Mr. Carter was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II, was a Master Mason, and a member of First Baptist Church of Wharton. He was a resident of San Diego, Katy, Houston and Nacogdoches prior to moving to Wharton in 1994.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Owen and Shirley Beauford of Katy, Sidney and Reba Gwen Beauford of Odem and James E. and Darla Carter of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister and brother.

Lydia Hanka
Funeral services for Lydia Meleese Bright Hanka, 61, of Salem, Ore., will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at Rosewood Funeral Home in Humble. Burial will follow.
Mrs. Hanka died Feb. 3, 2005, in Salem. She was born May 22, 1943, in Arcadia, La., to Lawrene Bright and Vivian Reynolds McGuire.
She was a former Wharton resident and worked as a writer.
Survivors include daughter, Heidi Koch; sons, Jim Hanka, Tommy Hanka, Pete Hanka and Joe Hanka; sisters, Rose Allison and Melody Peck; brothers, Larry Bright, David McGuire, Whitey McGuire, Randy McGuire and Ralph McGuire; and 15 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by son, Paul Hanka.
Velma Johnson
Funeral services for Velma Helen Rose Johnson, 57, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sand Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. A.C. Gardner officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.
Mrs. Johnson died Feb. 6, 2005, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born Jan. 25, 1948, in Wharton to O.B. and Sarah Jackson Wells.
Survivors include sons, Eric D. Johnson and Cedric McClintock, both of Wharton; daughters, Sheilda Grays-Andulce of Richmond, Tammy Viveros of Rosenberg and Kathderal See of Wharton; brothers, Floyd Richardson, Larry Sims and Billy Sims, all of Houston; sister, Jackie Long of San Francisco, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

J.E. McKellom
Funeral services for J.E. McKellom, 82, of Spring, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Matthews Funeral Home in El Campo. Burial will follow in Paradise Cemetery.
Mr. McKellom died Feb. 5, 2005, at his residence. He was born Oct. 16, 1922, in Bryan to Jessie McKellom and Mattie Sims.
He worked for the parks and recreation department.
Survivors include Jeanette Hodson McKellom; daughters, Imogene Thomas, Regina Clark and Wendra Bailey; son, J.E. McKellom Jr.; brothers, Luthell McKellom and Vernon McKellom; and four grandchildren.
Callie Moses
Funeral services for Callie Moses, 90, of Wharton, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Faith Baptist Church with Rev. M.E. Matthews officiating. Burial will follow in Wharton City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.
Mrs. Moses died Feb. 6, 2005, at her residence. She was born Jan. 5, 1915, in Eagle Lake to George and Gertrude Fulton Ward.
Survivors include daughter, Rose Christal of Houston; brothers, Roy Kelly Ward and Calvin Ward, both of Bellville; sisters, Bobbie Jean Anderson, Lorraine Sanders and Luvenia Taplin, all of Bellville.

Willie Sabrsula
Funeral services for Willie Mae Sabrsula, 78, of Boling, will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at the Davis Chapel in Rosenberg. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Rosenberg. Visitation was held from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at the Davis Chapel in Rosenberg.
Mrs. Sabrsula was born May 24, 1926, in Houston to Wilhelm H. and Elly M. Borman Mahlmann. She passed away Feb. 6, 2005, in Richmond.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Anton Sabrsula; and parents, Wilhelm and Elly Mahlmann.
Mrs. Sabrsula is survived by her son, William Bennett and wife, Virginia, of Rosenberg; daughter, Patricia Ramsey of Boling; grandchildren, Valerie Hogan; William A. Bennett and wife, Tara; Donald Ramsey and wife, Tonya; and Karen Helms and husband, Carlon; and eight great-grandchildren.

Ramona Hare
Ramona Mae Hare, age 75, of Wharton, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, in a Houston hospital following a sudden illness. She was born on Jan. 14, 1929, in Jamestown, Kan., the daughter of the late Henry LeFort and Dorothy Pounds LeFort.
Mrs. Hare had been a longtime resident of Wharton and was a former resident of Glasco, Kan., Illinois and Conroe. She married William Burke Hare on Nov. 7, 1949, in Glasco, Kan. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton and the Altar Society. Mrs. Hare was also a member of AARP, the Wharton Book Review Club and worked as a volunteer at the Book Store at the Wharton County Library. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Robert J. Hare, in 1975.
A rosary was recited Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at 7 p.m. at the Wharton Funeral Home with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. today, Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. John Kunnathukuzhy officiating. Graveside services and burial will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at the Glasco City Cemetery in Glasco, Kan.
Survivors include her husband, William B. “Bill” Hare of Wharton; son and daughter-in-law, William H. and Grace Hare of Laredo; sisters, Gwen LeFort of Concordia, Kan., and Phyllis McDaniel of Santa Maria, Calif.; brother, Delbert LeFort of Salina, Kan.; three nieces and one nephew also survive.
Pallbearers were Sherrell Speer, Ruiel Taylor, Asuncion Quintanilla, Ascension Quintanilla, Allen Rachunek, John Rachunek Robert Ripple and Freddie Pyka.

Elnora Walker
Elnora E. Walker was born May 10, 1911, to Rev. Ed Robertson and Leoder Irvin Robertson in Glen Flora. She went to her heavenly home Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Polly Ryon Memorial Hospital in Richmond.
Mrs. Walker was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Walker, in 1983 and son, Melvin H. Walker in 2001.
She is survived by her lovely family which includes her children, Delores Cavil and husband Ben, Hubert Walker and wife Marie, James Walker and wife Mary, Jeanette Benson and husband Lester and Van Walker and wife Linda; 10 grandchildren, Garryl Benson and wife Suzanne, Sharon Powell and husband Eddie, Anthony Cavil, Shawnette White and husband Quincy, Brian Cavil, Charlotte Walker, Ivory Lee Walker, James Walker, Byron Walker and Jonathan Benson; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Algeno McPherson, Zilla Curvey, Odessa Sullivan and Alma Gordon; sisters-in-law, Virgie Dawkins and Audrey Walker; brothers-in-law, Clarence and Charlie Walker; nieces, nephews and a host of family and friends.
A wake was held on Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at Newman Chapel United Methodist Church in Kendleton from 7 to 8 p.m. Funeral services celebrating her life will be at Newman Chapel United Methodist Church today, Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Powell Point Cemetery in Kendleton.

Mittie Bailey
Funeral services for Mittie “Sweet” Bailey, 85, of Wharton, were held Saturday at Mother Zion Baptist Church with Rev. C.L. Wallace officitiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Bailey died Sept. 29, 2004, at her residence. She was born June 19, 1919, in Wharton to Guy and Mittie Myers Ford.
She was a member a member of Little Concord Baptist Church at an early age and later joined Mother Zion Baptist Church. Mrs. Bailey married W.T. Greer Sr. and he preceded her in death. She later married Tillman Bailiey Sr.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Ennis and Alice Greer, Tillman Bailey Sr., Emmitt and Darlene Bailey and Joe Wayne Bailey; daughter and son-in-law, Sherrell and Ralph Johnson; sister-in-law, Annie Mae Ford; brother-in-law, Lonnie Aykes; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Weldon Traylor; and siblings, Guy Ford, Robert Ford, J.C. Ford, Ellis Ford, Rev. O.D. Ford, Lillian Ford, Beatrice Taylor, Thelma Aykes, Carrie Taylor and Reatha Scarlett.
Jesse Morris
Funeral services for Jesse Edward Morris, 85, of El Campo, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Triska Funeral Home with Rev. Don Story officiating. Burial will be at the Oaklawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today.
Mr. Morris passed died Oct. 3, 2004, in El Campo. He was born April 16, 1919, in Cistern, to the late John and Myrt]e Ling Morris.
He was a retired oil field gauger and had served in the Texas National Guard.
He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Larry E. and Carol Morris of Rockport and James R. and Tamara Morris of Wharton; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife Mary Etaine Morris, who died on July 12, 2004.

Arthur Bremser
Arthur Frank Bremser, age 77, of Wharton, passed away on Sept. 30, 2004, at the Columbus Community Hospital in Columbus. He was born on Dec. 3, 1926 in Hungerford, to Erich Albert and Isabel Frances Brod Bremser.
Mr. Bremser worked 35 years for Texas Gulf Sulphur Company in Newgulf, and after his retirement formed the Bremser Insurance Agency. He had also worked in the cattle business with his uncle, Albert Bremser. Mr. Bremser was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton and sang in the men’s choir. He was also an officer in several organizations including the VFW, American Legion, Knights of Columbus and the Rotary Club.
He joined the U.S. Navy at age 17 and served honorably in World War II as a coxswain. Mr. Bremser served 22 months in the armed service; 15 months were spent in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and five months in Japan with the Army of Occupation. He wore one battle star. Returning to Wharton, he married Estelle Marie Mynar on June 20, 1949, who preceded him in death in 1983.
A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, in the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home. A funeral mass was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating. Graveside services and burial were held at Evergreen Memorial park Cemetery in Wharton with military honors provided by American Legion Post No. 87 of Wharton.
Mr. Bremser is survived by his wife of 20 years, Nora White Wearden Bremser of Glen Flora; children, Brian and Rhonda Bremser of Wharton, Dr. David and Lurlyn Bremser Neisner of Columbus; grandchildren, Amy Nicole Bremser, Robert Arthur Neisner, David Ryan Neisner, Erich Reese Neisner, Lauren Brooke Novosad Hlavinka and great-grandchild, Carter Scott Hlavinka; one sister, Gertrude Bremser Burrow and her husband Willie O. “Bill” Burrow of Hallettsville. Nora’s children, Glen and Amy Wearden, Jim and Nola Russell, Thomas and Delilah Wearden, Patrick and Carolyn Wearden and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Erich Albert and Isabel Brod Bremser and a sister, Elizabeth Josephine “Bette Jo” Bremser Matlock LaVois.
Pallbearers were Louis Preisler, Eric Burrow, Leonard Burrow, Barclay Burrow, Terry Matlock, Max Brod, Delbert Brod Jr. and Jack Bridwell.

Graveside services for infant Kevin Dion Curtis Jr., were held Tuesday at El Campo Community Cemetery.
Kevin died Oct. 14, 2004, at Gulf Coast Medical Center.
Survivors include parents, Tynesa A. Davenport and Kevin Dion Curtis, both of Wharton.
