August Svec

Funeral services for August Adolph Svec, 82, of Hungerford, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford with Rev. Henry Rachunek officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. today, Wednesday, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford. Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. today at Wharton Funeral Home or from 5:45-9 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church.

Mr. Svec died Jan. 13, 2003, in Sugar Land following an extended illness. He was born on Aug. 29, 1920, in Wallis, the son of the late John Svec and Mary Grigar Svec.

He was a 58-year resident of Hungerford and a former resident of Frydek. Mr. Svec was a Disabled American Veteran having served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Mildred Svec on Feb. 12, 1945, in Hungerford. Mr. Svec was a self-employed farmer and carpenter and also worked as a roughneck in his early years. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford, the DAV in El Campo and American Legion Post No. 226 in East Bernard.

Survivors include wife, Mildred Svec of Hungerford; daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Benny Krpec of Hungerford; son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Charlene Svec of Hungerford; sister, Jo Ann Jernigan of Houston; brother, Leonard A. Svec of Needville; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by numerous brothers and sisters.

Lee Blocker

Private family services and cremation for Lee Norris Blocker, 69, of Markham, were held Thursday at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. Blocker died Jan. 7, 2004, in Matagorda County after a sudden illness. He was born March 16, 1934, in Brazil the son of the late Richard Lane Blocker and Clara Norris Blocker.

He had been a resident of Matagorda County since 1995 and was a former resident of Houston. Mr. Blocker was a graduate of Texas A&M University and was a rancher. He married Renata Veit on June 30, 1965, in Brazil.

Survivors include his wife, Renata Blocker of Markham; daughter, Gabriela Norris Blocker of Markham; son, Eduardo Blocker of Tuftin, Calif.; sister, Elizabeth N. Kyd-Rebenburg of Vienna, Austria; brothers, Richard Lane Blocker Jr. of Brazil and Robert Hefley Blocker of Markham; and two grandchildren.

Lewis Grays

Funeral services for Lewis Grays, 73, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at New Faith Church with Rev. Chris Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Jerusalem Cemetery in Spanish Camp.

Mr. Grays died Jan. 7, 2004, at Southwest Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness. He was born Aug. 28, 1930, in Wharton County to Bert Grays and Carrie Stephens.

He married Delores Duncan on Oct. 8, 1971. Mr. Grays was a rancher and Baptist by faith.

Survivors include wife, Delores Duncan Grays; daughters, Beverly Elaine Grays and Bertha Nichole Jackson; sons, Latreed Gayland Jackson and Cornelius Curtis Gibson; brother, Cecil Cooper; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Laura Havemann

Funeral services for Laura Katherine Wessels Havemann, 86, of LaGrange, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Saturday, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Prairie Valley with Rev. Herbert Beyer officiating. Interment will follow in the Prairie Valley Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Havemann died Jan. 4, 2004, in a LaGrange nursing home. She was born Dec. 2, 1917, in West Point, the daughter of the late John L. and Mione Frels Wessels.

She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Prairie Valley. A graduate of LaGrange High School and business school in Houston, she married Vastine F. Havemann on June 4, 1938, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Prairie Valley. An active member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Prairie Valley, she was the church organist for many years and was active in the choir and the womens group. She and her husband owned and operated the Texaco service station on Highway 71 between Plum and West Point for more than 40 years. After her husband’s death in 1981, she moved to LaGrange where she was active in the Fayette Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Garden Club and the Art League.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Art Schulze of Wharton; sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald and Amye Havemann of Bulverde, Dr. David and Sydney Havemann of Temple and Steven and Sharon Havemann of Pearland; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Petty of Austin; brother and sisters-in-law, Gene and Ruth Wessels and wife Ruth of West Point and Estella Havemann of Houston; numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to St. Peter Lutheran Church in Prairie Valley; Prairie Valley Church Cemetery Association or Alzheimer’s Foundation.

Helen Monfrey

Helen Dettling Monfrey of Dallas passed away peacefully at home Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born Nov. 10, 1961, in Wharton, she is survived by her husband of 14 years, Mark Monfrey of Dallas; parents, John and Geraldine Dettling of Wharton; sister, Frances Dettling Pullin and husband Dorman of Caldwell; brother, Joseph Dettling and wife Sheryl of College Station; sister, Elizabeth Dettling Moreno and husband Gabe; her brothers, Leroy Dettling and John Dettling Jr., both of Wharton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Monfrey graduated from Wharton High School and Stephen F. Austin University. She studied at the American Institute of Baking in Manhattan, Kans., and attended the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., and in Nape, Calif., for continuing education. Mrs. Monfrey worked as a corporate chef for Pillsbury/General Mills for 14 years. She strived to and did make a difference to her customers and friends. She will be remembered for her sharp wit, wonderful smile and especially for her loving devotion to family and friends. Mrs. Monfrey entertained, cooked and baked for so many people in her profession, at home parties and charity work. Throughout the years, she was active in the St. Rita Catholic Church as a CCD teacher, Eucharist minister, choir member, Fine Arts Committee member and volunteer for the Fourth Monday Supper Club assisting the AIDS Services of Dallas. Mrs. Monfrey was a member of the James Beard Foundation and The International Association of Culinary Professionals, the Baking and Pastry advisory board at El Centro Community College and an annual judge at The State Fair of Texas baking contests. She was recently honored with the General Mills 2003 Culinary Innovator of the Year Award.

A Scripture Service/Rosary will be held Sunday at 7:30 p.m., Jan. 11, at St. Rita Catholic Church, 12521 Inwood Road. The family will receive friends prior to and after the service. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 12, at St. Rita Catholic Church. A reception will follow at the church.

Graveside services will be held in Wharton at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Following the graveside services a Memorial Service Mass will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church with the Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating at 3 p.m. Visitation with family follows at the K of C Home in Wharton.

Memorials may be made to the St. Rita Fine Arts Perpetual Fund and to the El Centro Community College, Culinary Arts Program.

Lillie V. Owens

Funeral services for Lillie V. Owens, 95, of Spanish Camp will he held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, Jan. 10, at Camp Zion Rising Star United Baptist Church with Rev. C. Owens officiating. Burial will follow in Jerusalem Cemetery. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. at the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Owens died Jan. 5, 2004, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born March 4, 1908, in Wharton to Abel and Patsy Owens Moses.

Survivors include sons, Arnold Owens of Germany and James Owens of Houston; daughter, Ella Knox of Houston; brother, Robert Moses of San Francisco, Calif.; sisters, Vera Sanford of Wharton and Rebecca McGarity of San Antonio; 23 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and 8 great great-grandchildren.

Beverly Boatman

Funeral services for Beverly Ann Boatman, 66, of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Emken-Linton Funeral Home in Texas City. Visitation will be from noon until service time on Wednesday.

Mrs. Boatman died April 14, 2004, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston. She was born May 31, 1937, in Conroe.

She was a dorm mother at Brooking Hall at Wharton County Junior College.
Survivors include son, Greg Boatman; and sister, Jackie Howard.

Anton Mican

Funeral services for Anton Mican Jr., 82, of Wharton, are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mr. Mican died April 16, 2004, in Houston.

Sophie Smaistrla

Funeral services for Sophie Smaistrla, 89, of East Bernard, were held Thursday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard with Rev. Donald Ruppert and Deacon Denis Smaistrla celebrating the funeral mass and rite of committal. Entombment was in Holy Cross Mausoleum in East Bernard. A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard.

Pallbearers were Jeff Ray, Scott, Blake, Ron and John Smaistrla.

Honorary pallbearers were the staff and her friends at Hearthstone in Wharton.

Mrs. Smaistrla was born in the Krasna area to Karel Macha and Cecilia Peterash Macha. She was reared in Krasna and attended Central School. Mrs. Smaistrla married Raymond Smaistrla on Aug. 5, 1935, in Wallis. She worked in the cafeteria at East Bernard High School for many years and was a farmer’s wife all her life. Mrs. Smaistrla was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, KJZT and SPJST. She died Saturday, April 10, 2004, in Houston.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Albert Smaistrla and wife Margaret of East Bernard, Bernard Smaistrla and wife Carol of Manvel, Carolyn Minks and husband Larry of East Bernard, Donald Smaistrla and wife Sharon of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Jody Smaistrla and wife Jerry of East Bernard; grandchildren, Rita Willis, Ray Smaistrla, Renee Perry, Ron Smaistrla, Jeff Smaistrla, Blake Smaistrla, Laura Winter, Debbie Parker, John Smaistrla, Scott Smaistrla, Lisa Andrews, Shannon Rother and Brandi Minks; great-grandchildren, Jill Willis, Keith Willis, Anna Lea Smaistrla, Justin Jonathan and Jacob Perry, Jennifer Bailey, Josh Smaistrla, Grayson and Carter Smaistrla, Rebecca and Joshua Parker, Timothy and Courtney Hancock, Renee Johnson, Elyse and Luke Andrews and Blaise Rother.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie J. and Cecilia Macha; husband, Raymond Smaistrla; brothers, George, Theo, Henry, Charlie, Raymond, Joe and Ed Macha; and sister, Mary Divin.

Thelma Jean Brown

Memorial services for Thelma Jean Brown, 67, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 25 at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Chapel. Rev. L. Humphrey will offiate. Cremation will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.
Thelma Brown died July 21, 2006 in Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born August 16, 1938 in Wharton to Thurman and Versa Lee Stewart Johnican.

Surviving are her sons Terrence Brown and Cherwin Brown of Wharton and Melvin Johnican of Los Angeles, Calif.; a host of relatives and friends.

Angel Lopez Rodriguez

Graveside service for Mr. Angel Lopez Rodriguez, age 78, of Boling, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 25 at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Daniel Calhoun officiating.

Mr. Rodriguez, died Friday, July 21, 2006 at a Houston Hospital following a brief illness. He was born on April 7, 1928 in Agua Caliente, Mexico.

He was a longtime resident of Boling and Wharton County. He married Diana Silvas in 1978 in Wharton County. Mr. Rodriguez worked as a residential brick layer. He was a member of Christ is Life Church in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Diana Rodriguez of Boling, daughter, Leticia Delgado and husband, John of Boling, one grandson, friends and extended family.

Funeral services are under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Theodora Torres

Funeral mass services for Theodora Torres, age 92, of Wharton, was held 10 a.m. Monday, July 24, 2006 at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church with Father Carlos Lynch officiating. Interment followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Visitation was Sunday July 23, in the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with a rosary at 7 p.m.

Theodora Torres passed away Friday, July 22, 2006 in a Wharton nursing home after a brief illness. She was born on April 1, 1914 in Mizquiz, Coahuila, Mexico, daughter of the late Geraldo and Philomena (Castillo) Torres.

Dora was a long time resident of Wharton. She worked as a cook at George's, and was a wonderful homemaker. Dora was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton. She enjoyed gardening, growing plants, and going on vacation with her nephews and nieces.

Survivors include her sister Trinidad Villarreal of Wharton, nephews and nieces.

Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Gustavo Barrientos

Graveside services for Gustavo Felipe Barrientos, 16, of Boling, were held Saturday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Rosary services were held prior to the graveside services.

Gustavo died Oct. 17, in Houston from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. He was born on June 15, 1986, in San Diego, Guanajuato, Mexico, the son of Amador Barrientos and Maria Socorro Lazo Barrientos.

He was a 13-year resident of Boling and was a junior at Boling High School. Gustavo was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.

Survivors include parents, Amador and Maria Barrientos Sr. of Boling; sister, Maria Barrientos of Boling; brothers, Jesus Barrientos and Amador Barrientos Jr., both of Boling; maternal grandparents, Rafeal and Julia Lazo of Mexico and paternal grandmother, Ramona Barrientos of Mexico.
If desiring, memorials may be made to a charity of personal choice.
