John Loyd Montague

DE LEON -- Graveside services for John Loyd Montague, 81, of De Leon, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5 in Comyn Cemetery with Jackie Auvenshine officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Nowlin Funeral Home.

Mr. Montague died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at Canterbury Villa Nursing Home.

Mr. Montague was born Aug. 21, 1921, in Comyn, to the late Jason J. Montague and Idell Watson Montague. He married Ruth Helen Carlin on June 25, 1947, in De Leon. He was a farmer and rancher and had lived in the De Leon all of his life. He was a U. S. Army veteran of WW II and was a member of De Leon Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include son, Karl Montague of De Leon; daughter, Deborah Swinney of De Leon; brother, J. J. "Junior" Montague of De Leon; sisters, Myrtle Montague and Dorothy Montague, both of De Leon; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Montague; brother, Paul Montague; and sisters, Ruby Montague and Annie Barker.

Monita Elliott

Graveside services for Monita Elliott, 96, of Brownwood, formerly of Lubbock, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5 at Resthaven Memorial Park with the Rev. J. B. Elliott and Mr. Tom Elliott officiating. Services under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home of Lubbock.

Mrs. Elliott died Feb. 2, 2003, in Brownwood.

Mrs. Elliott was born in Indian Territory close to Ardmore, Okla. She married Thomas Earl Elliott on April 26, 1927, in Vernon. She attended school in Ardmore. She was a homemaker and a master baker for Baldridge Bakery from 1944 until her retirement in 1975. She moved to Brownwood in 1989 from Lubbock. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lubbock.

Survivors include two sons, J. B. Elliott of Ft. Worth and Tommy Elliott of Brownwood; and 13 grandchildren.

Five brothers and sisters preceded her in death.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 919 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 1100, Chicago, Ill., 60611-1676.

Christine French Towery

Christine French Towery, born in Blum, Texas, November 20, 1905, to Sophie and Willis French, passed away Friday, January 31, 2003, in the Masonic Home, Arlington, Texas. She grew up, married and raised her two children in Brownwood.

Christine was preceded in death by her husband, Britt E. Towery, Sr.; her parents, Sophie Hawk and Willis French; three sisters: Rena Meek, Lee Ola Townsend, one brother, Carl French; and one son-in-law, Paul Goodwin.

She was an active member of the Sunday school and the Woman's Missionary Union of the First Baptist Church of Brownwood and later Coggin Avenue Baptist Church. She attended the J. R. Looney Ward School. She was a leader and friend to several generations of girls and young women of the Eastern Star Rainbow Girls Masonic organization. From the 1940s to the 1980s her handcrafted, crocheted baby booties and sweater sets were worn by many babies in Brown County. The sets were so popular that Petzing's Women's and Children's Specialty Store on Center Avenue could not keep them in stock.

She is survived by a son and daughter: Britt E. Towery, Jr., and wife Jody of San Angelo, Texas, and Doris Goodwin, of Texas City. Six grandchildren: Jim Goodwin, Chris Decker, Beth Goodwin, Jackie Arvidson, Linda Holder and Tish Mayland. Ten great- grandchildren: Jennifer, Jillian, Stacey, Sarah, David, Clint Paul, Britt Aaron, Gregory, and Zane.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, February 9, at the First Baptist Church, Brownwood.

Since seven Towerys attended Howard Payne University, contributions to the general scholarship fund of the school would honor her and be a lasting, meaningful memorial.

Opal M. Kolb

ORLANDO, Okla. -- Graveside services for Opal M. Kolb, 93, of Brownwood, formerly of Orlando, Okla., will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 12 at Zion Cemetery in Orlando, with the Rev. Adrian Pollard officiating under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home.

Mrs. Kolb died Monday, April 7, 2003, at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Kolb was born July 31, 1909, in Denver, Colo., the daughter of the late Oscar and Margaret Chartrand Anderson. She married Daniel L. Kolb on Dec. 25, 1935, in Orlando. He preceded her in death in 1977. She was a retired registered nurse. She had been a longtime member of the Orlando United Methodist Church. She had been a resident of Brownwood for the last 23 years.

Survivors include daughter, Mary Caroline Hunter and husband, Richard, of Brownwood.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers, Earl Anderson and Leonard Anderson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Orlando United Methodist Church Organ Fund, P. O. Box 6, Orlando, OK 73073, or Good Samaritan Ministries, 305 Clark St., Brownwood, TX 76801, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Elaine Shelton

MORAN -- Funeral services for Elaine Shelton, 90, of Breckenridge, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 11 at the First Baptist Church of Moran with the Rev. Jack Clack officiating. Burial will follow in Moran Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight at Morehart Mortuary. The body will lie in state from 12 to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church of Moran.

Mrs. Shelton died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Shelton was born July 9, 1912, in Moran, to parents James M. and Oma Elliott Townsend. She attended Moran schools and returned after graduating from Tarleton State University in Stephenville. She married Garland L. Shelton on May 2, 1930, in Fredericksburg. He preceded her in death in 1975. She was in the ranching business for 70 years before moving to Breckenridge. She was a pianist and organist for the First Baptist Church of Moran.

Survivors include daughter, Dale and husband, the Rev. Dan Connally of Lake Brownwood; son, James and wife, Sarah, of Breckenridge; sister, Dale Pippen of Cisco; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Moran Cemetery Association, the West Texas Rehabilitation Center or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Arthur Hohertz

PRIDDY -- Funeral services for Arthur Hohertz, 93, of Priddy, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 11 at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Kingman officiating. Interment will follow in St. John Cemetery in Priddy under the direction of Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Mr. Hohertz died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at Hamilton General Hospital.

Mr. Hohertz was born Aug. 28, 1909, in Priddy, to Edward Hohertz and Louise Marwitz. He married Freida Tiemann on Nov. 19, 1931, in Priddy. He lived in Priddy most of his life and was a farmer and rancher. He was a member of the Sons of Herman.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Hohertz of Lubbock and Kenneth Hohertz and wife, Pam, of Big Valley; two daughters and their spouses, Melbadean and Jack Tarter of Lake Brownwood, and Ester Pearl and Calvert Hennig of Gardendale; 13 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; sister, Opal Schrank of Hamilton; brother-in-law, Pete Tiemann of Priddy; four stepchildren and spouses, Corky and Joyce Wilson, Tom and Rita Wilson, Mary and Max Cagle and John and Virginia Wilson.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Freida and Leta; son, Lee Roy Hohertz; and one stepson, Otis Wilson.

Johnny Singletary

LAKE BROWNWOOD -- Funeral services for Johnny Singletary, 68, of Lake Haven, Lake Brownwood, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 10 at the Rocky Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Rick Justice and Lynn Turnbow officiating under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Mr. Singletary died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at his home in Lake Haven, Lake Brownwood.

Mr. Singletary was born Aug. 17, 1934, to Benjyman Joseph and Elizabeth Melvina Sherrill Singletary in Durant, Okla. He married Dorothy Nell Pilcher in Eunice, N. M., on April 25, 1957. He was self-employed operating the Hi-Tech Pest Control Company for seven years. He was in the National Guard, had lived in Lake Haven for the past 12 years and was a member of the Rocky Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Nell Singletary of Lake Haven, Lake Brownwood; two daughters, Patricia Singletary of Odessa and Teresa LaNell Winkler of Pearland, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Gail Allen of Mansfield, Texas; eight grandchildren; nine brothers and sisters, Dollie Mae Cantera of Glenpool, Okla., Bennie Faye Smith of Atoka, Okla., Mary Lee Truitt of Goldthwaite, Patsy Jo Whitstone of Mineral Wells, Helen Ann Lewis of Monahans, Wanda Jean Briggs of Gardendale, Virginia Sherlene Haskins of Odessa, Junior Singletary of Lake Brownwood and Linda Nelson of Frazee, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjyman Joseph and Elizabeth Melvina Sherrill Singletary; and a sister, Billy Jay Duffy of Dickerson.

E.B. Lane

GOLDTHWAITE -- Funeral services for E.B. Lane, 81, of Goldthwaite, will be held 4 p.m. Friday, June 20, at Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home Chapel with Scott Herren officiating. Interment will follow at Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Mr. Lane died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 30, 1921, in Mills County, the son of Lennon Everett Lane and Deblia Reid. He married Pauline Kent on Oct. 9, 1943, in Arkansas. During World War II, he flew in the Army Air Corps. Mr. Lane was a service manager for the Chrysler Corporation of Albany, N.Y. He was a Methodist, a Mason and a resident of Goldthwaite since 1972.

He is survived by his son, Lucky Lane of Goldthwaite; three brothers, Jim Lane of Sweetwater, Leland Lane of San Antonio, and H.B. Lane of Lubbock.; his companion and caretaker, Jan Fulkerson of Goldthwaite; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline; one brother; and his parents.

Leona Scott

GOLDTHWAITE -- Funeral services for Leona Scott, 91, will be held 10 a.m. Friday, June 20, at Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home Chapel with Doug Holtzclaw officiating. Interment will follow at Goldthwaite Memorial Chapel under the direction of Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Scott died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at Care Inc. Nursing Home in Brownwood.

She was born March 23, 1912, in Goldthwaite, the daughter of Ed Dennis and Rilla Gregory. She married Bruce Scott on January 3, 1939, in Mills County. A lifelong resident of Mills County, she worked as a seamstress and a housewife. She was a Baptist.

She is survived by her nephew, George Simpson and his wife, Joyce, of Goldthwaite; two nieces, LaNell Allen of Calif., and Ann McCanent of Calif.; and many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

Dick Armstrong

BROWNWOOD -- Funeral service for Dick Armstrong, 71, of Brownwood, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21 at Netherton Funeral Home with Danny Snell, Bubba Armstrong and Ed Emmons officiating. Interment will follow at Ebony Cemetery under the direction of Netherton Funeral Home. Visitation will be held 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 20, at the funeral home.

Mr. Armstrong died Monday, June 16, 2003, in Brownwood.

He was born May 7, 1932, in Donna, the son of the late John and Myrtle Armstrong. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Navy. He married Barbara Jones on July 25, 1979, in Acapulco, Mexico. Retired from construction, he was a member of the Christian Church. He had been a resident of Brownwood for the past 10 months, moving from Taylor.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Armstrong of Brownwood; three sons, Rick Armstrong of Litton Springs, Roy Armstrong of Ceder Creek, and Wade Canon of Blanket; one daughter, Jeanette Bruner of Rockdale; brother, Leon Armstrong, of Kerrville; three sisters, Violet Davis of Kerrville, Lorene Fentress of Denver, Colo., and Mildred Winslow of Fulton; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Gerald Armstrong.

Billie Pearl Alexander

Family graveside services for Billie Pearl Alexander, age 91, of Brownwood, were held this morning in the Windham Cemetery with Rev. Rick Justice of Rocky Creek Baptist Church officiating. Services were under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home of Brownwood.

Mrs. Alexander died Thursday, June19, 2003 in a local nursing facility. She was born on Aug. 28, 1911 in the Byrds Community to Melvin and Dottie Smith Baskin. She married Allen Robert Alexander on Dec. 20, 1940 in the Byrds Community. She was a longtime member of Rocky Creek Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Billie is survived by a son, Roy Alexander of Brownwood, two grandchildren, Angela Alexander of Houston and Royann Williams and her husband, Michael, of Killeen.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1992 and a sister Ella Mae Campbell.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in Billie's name to the Rocky Creek Baptist Church.

C.L. "Bud" Cockerham

COMANCHE -- Funeral services for C.L. "Bud" Cockerham, 81, of Comanche, will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at Comanche Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Marvin Donnell officiating. Interment will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery under the direction of Comanche Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Mr. Cockerham died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Comanche Community Hospital.

He was born Jan. 30, 1922, the son of C.R. Cockerham and Ina L. (Bell) Cockerham. He was a veteran and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Mary Davis in October 1940, in Lockney. He was employed by Borden County School District from 1953 until 1964. Mr. Cockerham was a mechanic and owned and operated a gas station in Comanche until he retired. He was a Baptist.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Cockerham of Comanche; son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Nelda Cockerham of Brownwood; son and daughter-in-law, Kim and Barbara Cockerham of Waco; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sister, Peggy Wood of Midland.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Othell Black.

Ed Davenport

BRADY -- Ed Davenport was a true Horatio Alger story of a country boy from the small Texas community of Rochelle, Texas who became a very successful businessman and an outstanding community leader who contributed both personally and financially to almost 100 percent of the Brady Civic organizations.

Ed was born on June 15, 1923 in Rochelle. He passed away at his home on Wednesday, June 18, 2003. He had been in bad health for the past several months, but never lost his sense of humor or his interest in what he enjoyed. Every day he would want to know about the rain, the livestock, the crops and the truck lines. He kept mentioning that he wanted to get back on his big tractor and help plow fields.

Ed served twice as mayor of Brady and recently the Brady City Council voted to rename the Brady Civic Center the Ed Davenport Civic Center. He was mayor of Brady when the Civic Center was built and served again in more recent times.

As an active golfer for many years, he recently contributed $50,000 to the City of Brady to secure an irrigation well for the golf course expansion project.

The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 20, 2003 at Heritage Funeral Home. Service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2003 at the First Christian Church under the direction of Heritage Funeral Home with Dr. John Stewart officiating. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery.

Ed had a great work ethic and he never lost his faith. He had a great spirit and ambitions. He started out with one truck and courage. He now has a large fleet of sand hauling trucks. He began with a few acres of land and accumulated several farms and ranches.

Ed was a shareholder and director of the Commercial National Bank. He served as representative for Brady on the Concho Valley of Governments for five years and was successful in getting help for McCulloch County and Brady.

In 1983 the Governor asked him to serve on the Texas Mayor's Advisory Committee. He was also active in the Texas Thoroughbred Association and the North American Limousine Association.

Ed received awards from the Salvation Army and was recognized for his strong support of the West Texas Boys Ranch and West Texas Rehab. He supported 4-H and Livestock Show and was a member of the American Legion, Lions Club and the Texas Motor Transportation Association. He helped with Relay for Life and The American Cancer Society. Ed also served on the Board of the July Jubilee Association for many years.

Ed was a leader in the field of privately owned Federal Detention Centers. His centers became exemplary centers. The Federal Government sent all of the prospective jail investors to Ed's centers to show them what the government expected in their prison facilities.

Ed's first wife, Madeleine Guyton Davenport, died in 1990. He then married Saundra Ruffin on May 12, 2001 at their residence on West 6th Street. He was also a WWII veteran who served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his wife, Saundra; a stepdaughter, Taunya Myavik, and her husband Josef of Brady. Other survivors include his deceased wife's niece and nephew, Lynda Broad of Temple and Bert Broad of Brady; Bert's two daughters, Lacy Broad of San Angelo and Christina Bunch, her husband, Charlie, and their son, Hunter, of Eldorado; cousins Ike and Sonny Davenport of Brady and Johnny Davenport of San Antonio. Ed is survived by a special relative, Randal and Jan Boatright, who was one of his closest friends.

Brett Lee Ragsdale

COLEMAN -- Funeral services for Brett Lee Ragsdale, 35, of Houston, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at the Walker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Stanislaw and the Rev. Gary Boyd officiating. Interment will follow at the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. tonight.

Mr. Ragsdale died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at the Doctors' Hospital in Houston.

He was born July 24, 1967, in Dallas, the son of Sherrill and Wanda Dobbs Ragsdale. Brett attended school in Coleman and was active in band, 4-H, scouting, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Coleman.

He is survived by his mother, Wanda Ragsdale of Coleman; grandmother, Vedith Ragsdale of Canton; uncles, Kenneth Dobbs of Plano, Richard Dobbs of Trenton, David Dobbs of Azel, Sam Ragsdale of Mesquite, and John Ragsdale of Canton. Several cousins also survive.

Memorials may be made to MHMR Client Fund or Loaves and Fishes.

Robert Montellano Sr.

BROWNWOOD -- Funeral services for Robert Montellano Sr., 61, of Bangs, will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, June 22 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Barry McLean officiating. Interment will follow at Bangs Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home. A wake service will be held 7 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at the funeral home in Brownwood.

Mr. Montellano died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at his residence. He was born Nov. 22, 1941, in Brownwood.
